Giuseppe Penone: Spazio di Luce @ Whitechapel Gallery

友人に誘われて、Whitechapel Galleryで展示中のイタリア人アーティスト・Giuseppe Penone（ジュゼッペ・ペノーネ）の作品「Spazio di Luce (Space of Light/光の空間)」を見に行った。

イタリアの芸術運動・アルテ・ポーヴェラのメンバーであるペノーネは、45年以上に渡り、人間と自然との関係を追求。今年のBloomberg Commissionのために、空洞になっている内部が金箔で覆われた、12mもの長さのブロンズ製の木「Spazio di Luce」を制作した。この作品は、本物の木に薄くワックスを塗った彼の1969年の作品「All the Years of the tree plus one」を元に、木の代わりにブロンズを使用。自身が山で見つけてきた木を、ブロンズの型取りをしやすいような大きさにカットし、動物のように木が自身で立つように、余分な枝も取り除いた。最初のレイヤーは筆で、そしてその上から手でワックスを塗ることで、表面には制作に関わった人たちの多くの指紋が、記念のように残っている。内部は、いにしえより、生命の源と考えられていた太陽の光と連想されていた金で彩られていて、入口から見ると、中全体が見渡せるようになっている。

もしこの作品のことを何も知らなければ、本物の木と見まがうかのような素晴らしい出来。木の持つ生命力さえ感じられる気がする。訪れた人の一人は、内側に向かって鼻歌を歌い、その反響を楽しんでいた。とてもダイナミックで、生命力にあふれた、見るものに活力を与えてくれる作品。

I went to see a work by an Italian artist Giuseppe Penone, “Spazio di Luce (Space of Light)” (September 4, 2012 – August 11, 2013), at Whitechapel Gallery.

Penone, a member of the Italian art movement “Arte Povera“, has examined our relationship to nature over the past 45 years. For the latest Bloomberg Commission, he has created a 12-metre bronze cast of a tree with a gleaming gold-leaf interior. This work is a recollection of his work in 1969, “All the Years of the tree plus one“, a tree covered by a thin layer of wax, but this time he has created with bronze instead of a real tree. He found a tree in a mountain, and cut it in pieces in good size for making a cast. He also removed some branches so that the tree can stand by itself, like an animal. He first put a layer of wax with the brush and then by hands over the first layer, so you can see many fingerprints of whom involved in the sculpture’s making like a memory. Void spaces inside of the bronze cast are painted in gold, historically associated with the life-giving forces of light of the sun, and you can see through the entire tree from the entrance of the gallery.

If you have no knowledge about this work, you may mistakenly believe that this is a real tree. You can even feel life force that trees possess. One cheerful visitor was singing into the tree and enjoying the echo of his singing. A truly dynamic work that gives us a life force, and makes us all liven up. Two thumbs up!

Moo Grill Argentinian Coffee & Wine Bar @ Whitechapel

Time Out誌のレビューを見て、ホワイトチャペルにあるアルゼンチン料理のMoo Grillに行ってみた。リバプール・ストリート駅やスピタルフィールズに近いのにも関わらず、何となく寂れているCobb streetにある、間取りの狭い小さなお店で、店内は暗めの照明とダークウッドのインテリアでまとめられ、壁にはアルゼンチンのバーやカフェの古い写真が飾られていて、ブエノス・アイレスの場末の渋いバーにいる気分になる。そんな雰囲気とは裏腹に、日本に行った事があるというスタッフは、とてもフレンドリー。

フードメニューは朝食、ランチ、そして5時以降は、アルゼンチンものをメインに取り揃えたワインと一緒に、タパスがいただける。私たちは、アルゼンチン名物のサンドイッチ、Lomitoを注文。ジューシーなステーキ、ハム、チーズ、トマト、レタスが挟まったLomitoは、カラッと揚げられた手作りのフライドポテトがついて、ボリューム満点。美味しくて、つい完食してしまった。

2階席もあり、フロアに1台ずつあるテレビで、明日から始まるワールドカップの試合を毎日放映するそうだ。お決まりののパブ観戦だけでなく、ちょっと趣向を変えて、ビールの代わりにワインを片手にタパスをつまみに、お目当ての試合を観るのもいいかも。フォークランド紛争やマラドーナの神の手ゴールなどいろいろエピソードのある因縁の敵同士、アルゼンチン対イングランド戦があったら行きたいな。ファン同士が殴り合いの喧嘩とかしそうで面白そう！

We went to an Argentinian coffee & wine bar Moo Grill in Whitechapel, which we found in the Time Out review. Located on a desolated Cobb street near Liverpool Street station and Spitalfields, this small place, furnished with dark woods and dim lighting and its walls covered with old cafés and bars in Argentina, made me feel like I was in a gloomy bar in downtown Buenos Aires. But contrary to the atmosphere, the staffs were very friendly with cheerful Latin courtesy.

Moo Grill offers breakfast, lunch, and small appetizers after 5pm which you can enjoy with a glass of Argentinian wine. We ordered Argentinian sandwich Lomito with juicy steak, ham, cheese, tomato and lettuce and handmade crispy fries. It was so good that we finished it all, though it was quite big.

There is also a second floor seating area as well, and they are going to screen the World Cup games everyday with two TVs, one on each floor. Instead of going to a usual pub with a pint of beer, why don’t you try a glass of wine with tapas dishes for your team’s games at Moo grill? We would go if there is a game Argentina vs England, the archenemies (Falklands War, Maradona’s “Hand of God” etc.etc) – would love to see the fans kill with each other!

New London Overground East London Line Now Open

先日、Pizza Eastにランチしに行った時に、ロンドン・オーバーグラウンド、East London line（イースト・ロンドン・ライン）のShoreditch High Street（ショーディッチ・ハイストリート）駅がオープンしているのに気づいた。Pizza Eastで窓際に座るとショーディッチ・ハイストリート駅横の鉄道橋が見えるのだが、ピザを食べながら誰も乗っていない車両が試運転されているのを見て、いつ開通するんだろうとずっと思っていた。

ロンドン東部とDocklands（ドックランズ）を通って北部と南部を結ぶイースト・ロンドン・ラインは、10億ポンドをかけた延長計画のため、2007年12月に閉鎖。その第1段階が最近終了、今年4月27日に限定運行が始まり、5月23日に完全運行が始まった。第1段階工事では、従来のイースト・ロンドン・ラインに、ショーディッチ・ハイストリート駅、Hoxton（ホクストン）駅、 Haggerston（ハガーストン）駅、そして Dalston Junction（ダルストン・ジャンクション）駅を新設、Whitechapel（ホワイトチャペル）駅からDalston Kingsland（ダルストン・キングスランド）駅の間がつながり、ロンドン東部から南部のNew Cross（ニュークロス）駅、Crystal Palace（クリスタル・パレス）駅とWest Croydon（ウェスト・クロイドン）駅まで1本で行けるようになった（以下の路線図を参照）。Highbury & Islington（ハイブリー＆イズリントン）駅までの延長は2011年に、計画第2段階のSurrey Quays（サリー・クウェイズ）駅から、inner South London Line（インナー・サウス・ロンドン・ライン）のClapham Junction（クラッパム・ジャンクション）駅を結ぶラインは、2012年のロンドン・オリンピック前に完成予定。このイースト・ロンドン・ラインの開通で、ドックランズに通勤するビジネスマンの需要が増え、かつては寂れていた地域だった沿線は不動産ブームに沸いているそうだ。

うちから最寄りのホクストン駅まで歩いて20分、近くもなく遠くもない微妙な距離。使えそうで使えなさそう。

When we went to Pizza East the other day, I realized that the new Shoreditch High Street station finally opened. You can see the railway bridge (photo above) when you get a window side seat at Pizza East, and I had been wondering when the London Overground East London line would open, every time I saw a new train on test-run while I was eating a pizza.

The East London line is a London Overground line which runs north to south through the East End and Docklands. The line closed as part of the £1 billion East London line extension in December 2007, but a limited service was introduced on April 27 this year and full service commenced on May 23. In its phase 1, the former underground line was extended northwards from Whitechapel, with new stations at Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton, Haggerston and Dalston Junction. Now you can travel direct from East End to the South, towards New Cross, Crystal Palace, and West Croydon (see a route map below). A further extension to Highbury & Islington is expected to be completed in 2011. Phase 2 which will link the line from Surrey Quays to the inner South London Line at Clapham Junction, is due to be completed prior to the 2012 Summer Olympics. It is reported that the opening of the East London line has brought property boom to the area once isolated areas of southeast London.

The closest station from us to the line is the Hoxton station, but it takes about 20-min walk – not close but not too far. Unfortunately I don’t get much benefit from it.

Whitechapel Gallery Reopening

２年間に渡る改装工事の後、ホワイトチャペル・ギャラリーが４月４日、再オープンした。隣接した図書館の建物と合体し、ギャラリースペースがほぼ２倍になった。1901年に設立されたホワイトチャペル・ギャラリーは、公的資金援助でできた最初のギャラリーの１つで、非営利教育チャリティとして、貧しいホワイトチャペル地区を中心にした、教育活動や公共福祉のプロジェクトに定評がある。コンテンポラリー・アートの作品の展示や、回顧展、地域のための展覧会等を行っている。

再オープンの目玉は、ロンドンを拠点に活躍するポーランド人アーティスト、ゴシュカ・マキュガ（Goshka Macuga）の、ピカソの「ゲルニカ」にインスピレーションを受けたタピストリー。1938年にこのホワイトチャペル・ギャラリーで「ゲルニカ」が展示された事を記念して企画されたものだ。通常国際連合安全保障理事会の外に飾られているこのタピストリーや戦争や反戦のプロパガンダが収納された円卓を含む、「Goshka Macuga: The Nature of the Beast」展は、歴史的また現代の問題をつないでいるとの事だが、繋がりが弱く表面的で、典型的な「反戦」アートとなってしまっているような気がする。

他の主な展示は、写真、絵画、建築、拾ったオブジェ等をミックスした作品で有名なドイツ人彫刻家イザ・ゲンツケンの初の回顧展「Isa Genzken: Open, Sesame!」。ゲンツケンのカラフルで遊び心に溢れた作品は、コンクリートの固まりや古いラジオの展示等面白いものもあったが、多くは残念ながら私の理解不能な、不可解な「コンテンポラリー・アート」だった。

その他の現在の展示は「Passports: Great Early Buys from the British Council Collection」等々。

After 2 years of development work, the Whitechapel Gallery was reopened on 4 April. The size of the gallery become doubled by incorporating the former neighbouring library building. The Whitechapel Gallery was founded in 1901, as one of the first publicly-funded galleries, and also has a reputation for education and outreach projects as not-for-profit educational charity, especially to the deprived Whitechapel area. It exhibits the contemporary arts, retrospective exhibitions and shows for an interest to the local community.

New gallery’s first exhibition after reopening includes a tapestry by a London-based Polish artist Goshka Macuga, inspired by Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, to commemorate the gallery’s exhibiting Pablo Picasso‘s ‘Guernica‘ in 1938. ‘Goshka Macuga: The Nature of the Beast‘, containing the tapestry hung outside the UN Security Council and a hollow round-table  filled with war and anti-war propaganda, is supposed to connects historic and contemporary affairs, but the connection is a bit weak and superficial, and it ends up like another typical ‘anti-war’ artwork.

Another major exhibition is ‘Isa Genzken: Open, Sesame!‘, the first retrospective of German sculptor, who create fusion of photography, paint, architecture, and found objects into the realm of sculpture. Some of Genzken‘s colorful and playful works are interesting, such as concrete blocks and old radio hanging on the wall, but many of them are another mysterious contemporary arts that unfortunately I can’t understand…

The gallery is also showing ‘Passports: Great Early Buys from the British Council Collection‘ and so on.

east festival @ London East End

３月５日から１０日まで、ロンドン・イーストエンドで、Mayor of London（大ロンドン市長）主催、「East」フェスティバルが開催中だ。期間中は、Central East 地区（シティ／ショーディッチ／ホクストン／ホワイトチャペル／スピタルフィールズ）、ハックニー、ストラットフォードのエリアで、パフォーマンス、アート、歴史、ファッション、デザイン、映画、食などに関連する、３００以上のイベントが行われている。以前にも、私の住むハックニー区について書いたが、東部ロンドンは、南アジア系等多様な移民文化を感じさせるとともに、アーティストやクリエイターが多く住むエリア。ストラットフォードは、２０１２年ロンドン・オリンピックの開催地となっている。

上の写真は、「AX&L（After Xenakis and Le Corbusier）」という、スピタルフィールズ・マーケットに設置された、インタラクティブ・インスタレーション。バービカン・センターで開催中の「Le Corbusier: The Art of Architecture」（ル・コルビジェ：アートとしての建築）展と、現代音楽作曲家のIannis Xenakis（ヤニス・クセナキス）のコンサート／映画に触発された、このコンクリート製の石臼のようなインスタレーションは、デザイン・コンサルタントのAllofUsが、２人のマエストロの数学的原理を採用して、East（東）の音とスペースを構成したものらしい。石臼のように上の部分を回すと、奥のスクリーンの映像と音楽が、それに呼応する。でも正直、映像と音楽が何を意味しているのかよくわからなかった。スクリーンも小さく、インパクトがない。またスクリーンの映像、情報デザインも、よくできている、とは言いがたい。ありがちな、意図は高邁だが、結果は？？？な「アート」か。

From March 5th to 10th, East End of London is hosting the  ‘East‘ festival (curated by Mayor of London), celebrating the rich creative mix of the area. The festival features more than 300 events covering performance, art, history, fashion and design, film and food, across Central East (The City, Shoreditch, Hoxton, Whitechapel, Spitalfields), Hackney and Stratford. As I wrote about a borough of Hackney, where we live, East London has the unique mix of a variety of immigrant cultures and cutting edge arts and creations. Stratford will be the primary location of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The photo above is an interactive installation ‘AX&L‘ (After Xenakis and Le Corbusier) at Spitalfields Market. Inspired by the Barbican’s exhibition ‘Le Corbusier: The Art of Architecture‘ and the modernist composer Iannis Xenakis documentary/concert, design consultancy AllofUs has adopted the mathematical principles of the two masters to form sound and spatial compositions especially for East. When you turn the top of this concrete ‘piloti’, the screen and music corresponds to the movement. However, its screen is too small and doesn’t give much impact. I also didn’t understand how the images and sounds represent the east end, and graphics and information design is not quite well done as well – another ‘great idea but the result is weak’ installation.
