What’s in British’s Shopping Basket?

1ヶ月ほど前の記事なのだが、イギリス第4位のスーパーマーケット・チェーン、Morrisons（モリソンズ）が、1100万人の顧客の1週間分の買物を分析した調査結果に関するテレグラフ紙記事を読んだ。この調査によると、最近のグローバル化やヘルシー志向、グルメブームで、食料品店の店先には世界中の食品や健康食品が並び、テレビ番組でセレブ・シェフが幅を利かせるようになった今でも、イギリス人の買い物かごの中身は、50年前に食料配給が終わった頃とほぼ変わらないそうだ。

最も頻繁に買われる商品はスライスされた食パンで、それに塩味のポテトチップ、トマト缶が続く。野菜で17位までのランキングに入ったのはブロッコリ一品で、果物はバナナだけ。唯一、50年前にはランキングに入るとは思いもよらなかった商品は、オーストラリア産の白ワインのみ。ランキングを見ると、ヘルシーでグルメな食生活とはほど遠いレパートリーだ。

Morrisonsは2004年までイングランド中部のミッドランズとイングランド北部が中心で、最近南下してきたチェーンなので、住民の過半数近くが外国生まれのロンドンには、当てはまらないかもしれない。ちなみにセントラル・ロンドンにはMorrisonsはない。またMorrisonsは庶民的なスーパーなので、ミドルクラス御用達のウェイトローズの顧客とも消費傾向が違うかも。

Morrisonsの広報担当者曰く、この不況下、一般的な消費者は出来合いを控えて手作りすることが増え、週に一回はスパゲッティ・ボロネーゼ（ミートソース）を作り、見切り品や割引品を狙うという。スパゲッティ・ボロネーゼはイギリス人の間で一番人気の外国料理と以前書いた（→過去の記事）。イタリア料理がイギリス人の食卓に最も頻繁に上るというのは、何となく意外。まあ、ミートソースは簡単で安上がりで、大体誰が作っても美味しいからね。

About a month ago, I read a Telegraph article about consumer research conducted by Morrisons, the UK’s fourth largest supermarket chain. Morrisons has analyzed the weekly shops of its 11 million customers and found that the most common items are not so different from 50 years ago, just after food rationing ended.

The item found most regularly in customers’ shopping baskets, was sliced white bread, followed by ready salted crisps (potato chips) and a tin of chopped tomatoes. The only vegetable which is ranked in top seventeen most purchased items is broccoli, and banana is the only item of fruit. The item that would have been inconceivable in shopping baskets of 50 years ago was probably a bottle of Australian white wine. If the result of the research is true, average British doesn’t seems to eat very healthy.

Until 2004, Morrisons superstores were largely concentrated in the English Midlands and the North of England and had expanded southwards recently and there is no Morrisons store in central London. Therefore, their research may not reflect Londoners’ shopping baskets – almost half of Londoners are not born in UK. If analyzing Waitrose shoppers who are mainly middle class, the result may be different as well.

The supermarket said the list proved that British shoppers were, following the recession, more willing to cook from scratch, and typical shopper on average makes spaghetti Bolognese once a week and hunts for bargains. I wrote in the past that spaghetti Bolognese is one of the most popular foreign dish among British (→past entry). But it is a little surprise for me that Italian comes the top of the dishes that appears on UK’s dinner table. Well, pasta is easy to make and costs little, and quite tasty whoever makes it!

British’s Favorite Foreign Cuisine

今日のワールドカップでは、前回チャンピオン、イタリアが登場。その初戦、パラグアイ戦を見ながら書いている。今年のイタリア・チームは、監督を含め前回と顔ぶれがあんまり変わらず、選手の高齢化が危惧される。セリエA、コッパ・イタリア、UEFAチャンピオンズリーグを制覇、イタリア史上初の主要タイトル3冠を達成したインテルから一人もメンバーが選ばれていないのも、不安材料の一つで、イタリアでは今のところ、今イチ盛り上がっていないそうだ。

I am writing this blog while I am watching Italy vs Paraguay, the first World Cup match for Italians, the defending word champion. Players of Azzuri are about the same from the last World Cup including the coach,but just 4-year older, therefore it is anticipated that it is quit hard for them to maintain the championship. In addition, there is no player selected from Inter,  the team completed The Treble, becoming the first ever Italian team to achieve the feat, by winning the Scudetto, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League in a single season. Accordingly, it is reported that Italians are not excited much for this Word Cup game – yet.

少し前の記事だが、Cauldron Foodsの調査で、イギリス人の好きな外国料理のトップ８で、イタリア料理が堂々の1位に輝いた。2位のフレンチ、旧植民地だった3位のインディアンなどは納得できるが、7位、8位にメキシカン、ギリシャ料理がランクインしたのが意外。最近ブリートを売るファースト・フードショップ、メキシカン・レストランが増えていてるのはその人気のせいか。でもギリシャ料理店は、ロンドンにはあんまり多くないように思うんだけれど。

I read a while ago that Italian food is selected as the most favored foreign cuisine in UK, based on a study commissioned by Cauldron Foods. Sounds reasonable that French and Indian, a former British colony, come the second and the third, but it is a bit surprising that Mexican and Greek ranked rather high on number 7th and 8th. I don’t see many Greek in London, but now I get why Burrito shops and Mexican restaurants are spurning in the capital.

また、BBCが発行する食べ物関係の雑誌「Olive」の読者アンケート（2500人対象）でも同様の結果が出た。40％の読者が、イタリア料理が一番好きな外国料理だと答えた（2位はインド料理）。その中でパスタが一番の好物と応えた人が26.5％と最高、好きなソースは、ボロネーゼ（ミートソース）、カルボナーラ、ペスト（ジェノベーゼ）の順。ラザーニャ、ピザ、リゾットがパスタの次に続く。ちなみに、イギリスの学校ではイタリア語は教科に入っていないところが多いけれど、イタリア語は、フランス語に次いで好きな言語だという。スペインがイギリス人の人気ナンバーワンのバケーション先で、スペインに別荘を持っている人が多いので、スペイン語の方が人気が高いと思っていたけれど、やはり食べ物の影響はすごいのね。

A survey by BBC’s Olive food magazine gives the similar result.  Over 40% of nearly 2,500 readers who participated the survey chose Italian as their favourite foreign food, followed by Indian food at 16%. Pasta is the most popular Italian dish, favoured by 26.5% of people, and the favourite sauce on pasta is Bolognese, followed by carbonara and then pesto. Lasagne is their second choice with 15% of votes and pizza is the third at 14%, followed by risotto. Although the teaching of Italian language is not commonplace in British schools, but Italian is their second-favourite language, after French. I thought Spanish would be the second, as Spain is the number one destination for British tourists and many Brits have a second house in Spain – I guess food is the powerful force for people to fall in love with a certain culture.

元に戻るが、Cauldron Foodsの調査によると、昨年イギリスの食卓に上った料理10皿のうち、6皿は外国料理だったそうだ。これを受けて、Cauldron Foodsの広報は、「it’s clear that we Brits are actually some of the most adventurous and cosmopolitan foodies in the world（私たちイギリス人は、世界の中でも冒険的でコスモポリタンなグルメであることは確か」 とのコメントを出したけれど、その割にアフリカ料理やカリビアン料理など、ロンドンに多く住む移民たちのエスニック・フードは、インディアンを除いて移民街以外ではあんまり見かけないし、タイ料理やベトナム料理に比べて人気もないし、トレンドにもならない。これで、世界的にもコスモポリタン、と自負するのはちょっと行き過ぎ？

Back to Cauldron Foods survey, 6 out of 10 meals prepared in British households last year were derived from foreign culinary traditions. Cauldron Foods PR says, “it’s clear that we Brits are actually some of the most adventurous and cosmopolitan foodies in the world”, but I hardly see a certain ethnic food restaurant such as African and Carribian cuisine outside their community. Though there are lots of people from these countries living in London, these ethnic restaurants have not the same popularity as other exotic cuisines like Thai or Vietnamese. Isn’t it a too much boast to call themselves ‘cosmopolitan’ with this result??
