Gerhard Richter: Panorama @ Tate Modern

テート・モダンの展覧会「Gerhard Richter: Panorama」（10月6日〜翌年1月8日）を観に行った。ドイツ人画家のゲルハルト・リヒターのこの大規模回顧展では、60年代に始まった50年近いキャリアの中から、写真を元に描いた具象画、スクイージーを用いて描いた抽象画、ポートレート、風景画、歴史的事件がモチーフの絵画、そしてガラスや鏡を使った作品、ドローイング、写真など、多様な技術とアイデアを用いたバラエティに溢れる作品を集めている。

リヒターは、多くの相反する作品を創り続けている。モノクロやグレーの抽象画に対し、色を多用した作品。丁寧かつ秩序だった落ち着いた作品に対し、自由でのびのびした筆遣いのもの。感情を抑制した静物画や印象派を思わせる美しい風景画、家族を描いた繊細な肖像画に対し、ナチスドイツ時代の家族のポートレートや、ドイツ赤軍（バーダー・マインホフ）メンバーの刑務所でのミステリアスな最後の死に顔、そしてアメリカ同時多発テロ事件など衝撃的な歴史的事件。カラーストライプを描いたシャープな作品（参考写真）は別として、カラフルな抽象画は好みではないけれど、感情や意見を声高に押し付けてこない、繊細な筆致で描かれた美しい写真のような具象画には、とても心動かされる。今年秋イチオシの展覧会です。

We went to see the Tate Modern’s new exhibition “Gerhard Richter: Panorama” (October 6 – January 8, 2012). This major retrospective of the German artist gathers a diverse range of Richter’s works with various techniques and ideas throughout his nearly 50-year of career since 1960s, including realistic paintings based on photographs, colourful and monochrome abstractions such as the squeegee paintings, portraits, landscapes and paintings of historical events, as well as glass constructions, mirrors, drawings and photographs.

Richter has produced many different kinds of works, which are often contradicted each other: monochrome grey works vs. multicoloured abstracts; well exercised and ordered realistic paintings vs. abstracts with unpredictable and free flow of blush strokes; impersonal still-life, impressionistic landscapes and delicate portraits vs. emotion provoking historical subjects such as family portraits under Nazi Germany, ‘mysterious’ deaths of the Baader Meinhof group at the jail, and 9/11 terrorist attacks. I am not a big fan of his colourful abstract paintings, except monochrome ones and color stripes such as this), but I was very moved with his photorealistic paintings with subtlety and tranquil beauty with delicate brush strokes, without screaming out his opinions and emotions. Very impressive, and must-see exhibition of this fall – highly recommended.

United Artists of Italy @ Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art

イズリントンにある小さなイタリアンアート美術館、Estorick Collection（エストリック・コレクション）の新しい展覧会「United Artists of Italy」（6月22日〜9月4日）は、22人のイタリア人フォトグラファーが撮影した、20世紀イタリア人アーティストの写真約85枚を、1階の2部屋に展示している。Mario Giacomelli（マリオ・ジャコメッリ）、Mimmo Jodice（ミンモ・イョーディチェ）、Gianni Berengo Gardin（ジャンニ・ベレンゴ・ガルディン）など、イタリアを代表する写真家が1960年代以降に撮影した、ジョルジョ・デ・キリコ、ルーチョ・フォンタナ 、ジョルジョ・モランディといったアートの巨匠たちのポートレートは、奥さんや家族と一緒の写真、自分の作品と共に写った写真、おどけた表情、制作から離れくつろぐ姿など、偉大な作品を作り上げたアーティストたちの素顔が垣間見せてくれる。ただ、そのアーティストやその作品を知らなければ、少し退屈かも。。。

Islington’s small Italian art museum, the Estorick Collection‘s new exhibition “United Artists of Italy” presents some 85 portraits of twentieth century Italian artists, taken by 22 leading Italian photographers since 1960s. The portraits of Italian maestro such as Giorgio de Chirico, Lucio Fontana and Giorgio Morandi, by photographers including Mario Giacomelli, Mimmo Jodice and Gianni Berengo Gardin, spotlight artists in real life. You may gain more insight in artists and their art by looking at them being intimate with their wives and families, making funny faces and postures, relaxing away from their work, and being photographed with their artworks. But you may get a bit bored if you don’t know the artists and their works at all…

Rivington Place @ Shoreditch

ショーディッチにあるRivington Place（リビングトン・プレイス）は、ビジュアル・アートの文化的多様性を促進するため、アーティスト／キュレーター／ライターを代表する機関のIniva（Institute of International Visual Art）と文化的アイデンティティや人権問題を提唱する国際写真アート・エージェンシーのAutograph ABPが共同で建設した、ビジュアル・アート・センター。1968年のHayward Gallery（ヘイワード・ギャラリー）以来、約40年ぶりに公的資金で設立されたこのセンターは、ガーナ系イギリス人建築家David Adjaye（デイヴィッド・アジャイ）がデザイン、2007年10月5日にオープンした。センターには、無料で入れるギャラリー・スペース、Stuart Hall Library（スチュワート・ホール図書館）、そしてInivaとAutograph ABPのオフィスが入っており、1階にはカフェLati Riもある。

Rivington Place is a visual arts center built by Iniva (Institute of International Visual Art / arts institution that represents artists, curators and writers) and Autograph ABP (international photographic arts agency that addresses issues of cultural identity and human rights), to reflect and promote cultural diversity in visual arts. This is the first publicly funded build of its kind since the Hayward Gallery’s opening in 1968 more than 40 years ago. It was designed by Ghanian British architect David Adjaye, and opened on 5 October 2007. The Rivington Place houses gallery spaces (free entry), the offices of Iniva and Autograph ABP, and the Stuart Hall Library, as well as a café Lati Ri on the ground floor.

明後日27日には終わってしまうけれども、1階ギャラリーでは「Ever Young: James Barnor」展が開催中。1940年代後半から70年代初頭まで、独立へと向かうガーナと多民族化が進むロンドンとイングランドを舞台に撮影された、カラーとモノクロの写真が展示されている。上の階の「The Paris Albums 1900: W.E.B. Du Bois」展は、アメリカで奴隷制度が廃止されてまだ35年しか経たない1900年のパリ万博で、アフリカ系アメリカ人のポートレート写真を展示した「American Negro Exhibit」の中から選んだ200枚を展示したもの。

Although ending soon on 27th, just the day after tomorrow, the ground floor gallery hosts “Ever Young: James Barnor,” introducing Barnor’s street and studio photographs, both color and black&white, taken in two societies in transition from the late 1940s to the early 1970s; Ghana which was moving towards its independence, and England, especially London, which was becoming a cosmopolitan, multicultural metropolis. On the upper floor, “the Paris Albums 1900: W.E.B. Du Bois” showcases a selection of 200 portraits from the American Negro Exhibit at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, only thirty five years after the abolition of slavery.

「Ever Young: James Barnor」展の立派な大型カタログ（16ページ／無料）と、少し見栄えが劣る「The Paris Albums 1900: W.E.B. Du Bois」のインフォメーション、そしてリビングトン・プレイスの秋／冬のイベント情報冊子。シンプルだけれどインパクトのあるデザインもいい。

A good-looking large size catalogue of “Ever Young: James Barnor” (16 pages / free), a lesser-cost information leaflet of “the Paris Albums 1900: W.E.B. Du Bois” and the Rivington Place’s Autumn/Winter brochure. All of them are designed nicely – simple but eye-catching and good color choice.

The Sky Arts Street Galleries: Rankin

芸術・アート専門チャンネルSky Artsが、イギリス人の人気写真家・Rankinと組み、イギリスの６都市（ロンドン、マンチェスター、バーミンガム、エジンバラ、ニューキャッスル、リバプール）の街角を屋外アートギャラリーに変えるというプロジェクト「Sky Arts Street Galleries」が8月16日から始まった。

Rankinは、ファッションやポートレートを手がける写真家で、ケイト・モスやマドンナなどのセレブから、エリザベス女王やブレア元首相など著名人を撮影したポートレート写真で有名。また彼の写真は、ナイキやコカ・コーラ、ロレアルなど大手企業の広告にも使われている。慈善活動も行っており、女性の地位向上を目指す「Women’s Aid」の広報キャンペーンに参加したり、昨年開催した「Rankin Live（ランキン・ライブ）」では、22年間の活動をまとめた回顧展とともに、1000人の一般人を撮影したポートレート写真を展示、その被写体は£50でそのポートレートを受け取り、その収益は全てOxfam（オックスファム）に寄贈された。

Sky ArtsはRankinにStreet Galleriesプロジェクトの作品づくりを委託。モダン・アート（写真最上）クラシック音楽（写真上から2枚目）、デザイン（写真3枚目左）、文学など様々なアートの形を表現した、Rankinの16枚の作品は、ロンドンでは、Tottenham Court Road（トッテナムコートロード）沿いのビルボード、ポスター、バス停、電話ボックスなど様々な場所で、目にする事ができる。

Art-oriented television channels, Sky Arts has launched the “Sky Arts Street Galleries” on August 16th, a new project that will transform the streets of the six UK cities (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Liverpool) to an outdoor art gallery, in association with popular British portrait and fashion photographer, Rankin.

Rankin is world famous for his iconic images from A-list celebrities such as Kate Moss and Madonna to Queen Elizabeth and former prime minister Tony Blair. He also has shot some world-renowned campaigns including Nike, Coca Cola and L’Oreal. He also involves in some charity activities. He has donated his services to publicity campaigns for the charitable organization “Women’s Aid“. Last year, he produced “Rankin Live“, where he brought the retrospective of the last 22 years of his photographic work, together with the portraits of 1,000 British public. Each person who took part received a print of their portrait for £50, and all the profits were donated to Oxfam.

Sky Arts commissioned Rankin to produce sixteen images, each representing a different form of art such as modern art (the top photo), classical music (the second photo), design (left on the third photo), literature and so on. You can see his works at billboard, poster, bus stop, phone box and advertising space, all on Tottenham Court Road.

Max Mara Art Prize for Women @ Whitechapel Gallery

ホワイトチャペル・ギャラリーで行われた、「Max Mara Art Prize for Women」展のプレビューに行った。「Max Mara Art Prize for Women」は、イギリスで活動する、まだ大規模な個展を開いたことのない女性アーティストに贈られる賞で、2年毎に開催される。2007〜09年の受賞者であるHannah Rickardの作品、「No, there was no red.」は、２つのスクリーンで構成された映像作品で、まれな気温逆転による蜃気楼の結果、ミシガン湖の上に街が投影された現象が口頭で語られる。私は気が短いので、ビジュアル面であまり動きのない、語りを主とした映像作品は少し苦手だ。1分程見た後、飽きてすぐに立ち去ったので、残念ながら作品の出来はよくわからない。

それより面白いと思ったのが、7月9日〜9月20日まで、同じくホワイトチャペル・ギャラリーで開催中の、アメリカ人アーティスト、エリザベス・ペイトン（Elizabeth Peyton）の「Live Forever」展。ペイトンはリアム・ギャラガーやマシュー・バーニー、ジェイク・チャップマン、ジャービス・コッカー等、、彼女と同世代のアーティストやミュージシャン、そして若かりし時のエリザベス女王、ジョージア・オキーフ、フリーダ・カーロ等、彼女に影響を与えた人々等を描いたポートレート作品を展示している。小さいキャンバスに油絵で描かれたポートレートは、カラフルでちょっと雑にも見える彼女独特のタッチで、その人物を生き生きと描き出している。

We sent to a preview of  “Max Mara Art Prize for Women” at Whitechapel Gallery. The “Max Mara Art Prize for Women” is a biannual award recognising the achievements of a UK-based artist who has not yet had a major solo exhibition.2007–09 award winner Hannah Rickards‘ two-screen film “No, there was no red.” is based on spoken accounts of a displaced image of a city seen over Lake Michigan as the result of rare temperature inversion mirages. I am a pretty impatient person, and I left the room after 1 minute of looking at this film work with mainly narration and not much movements. Therefore, I am afraid that I cannot talk if the work deserves to the award.

I was more excited to look around another exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery, “Live Forever” by the American artist Elizabeth Peyton. She portrays artists and musicians of her own generation including Matthew Barney, Jake Chapman, Jarvis Cocker, and Liam Gallagher, as well as iconic figures who have inspired her, including the young Elizabeth II, Georgia O’Keefe and Frida Kahlo. Her paintings on small canvases, portraying the subjects in her own unique style of colorful and rough touch, were pretty captivating.
