Loaf @ Tottenham Court Road

トッテナムコートロードにあるカフェ・Loaf。あの辺りで昼食を取らないといけなかったので2回行った。レトロなインテリアはなかなか素敵なのだけれど、ジェイミー・オリバーのレストラン（Jamie’s ItalianやUnion Jacks等）みたいで、ちょっと個性に欠ける。

メニューは、Grilled Cheese toasties（具とチーズ入りホットサンド）、wrap（巻いたサンドイッチ）、mac ‘n’ cheese（マカロニチーズ）hot box（コンボ）、サラダなど、アメリカン/ブリティッシュの軽食。シェフは前の晩よく寝てなかったのか疲れてたのか、頼んだTuna Melt（缶入りツナとチーズ入りサンドイッチ）はツナが、そしてChicken Pestoはペストソースが入っていないという失態。幸い店内で食べていたので、すぐに作り直してもらうことが出来たが。ようやく出来上がったサンドイッチは不味くはないけど、近くのチェーン店・Eat.と変わらないレベル。シーザーサラダはドレッシングが多過ぎて後味悪すぎ。そして「自慢」のコーヒーも、Allpressのコーヒー豆、最高級のLa Marzoccoエスプレッソマシンを使っていて、どうしてこの味？と首を傾げてしまう。一つ救いは、フレンドリーなスタッフのサービス。間違いに迅速に対応、お詫びとしてコーヒー、ケーキを無料にしてくれた。でも全体的には、全てが中途半端。リピはしないかな。

We tried Loaf twice, as we had to eat lunch around there. This small café with the retro-style décor is good looking, but also looks a bit chain-ish like Jame Oliver’s restaurants, such as Jamie’s Italian and Union Jacks.

They serve American/British favorites; “Grilled Cheese” toasties as well as salads, hot box (combo meal), their version of “mac ‘n’ cheese” and wraps (menu). But chef didn’t sleep well or for other reason, and we got Tuna Melt sandwich without tuna and Chicken Pesto without basil pesto. Thank god we were eating-in and not in hurry, so we could tell them right away and ask them to redo. Result? Those toasties were OK, but not better than nearby Eat. Their caesar salad had too much dressing and the taste was too strong. Their proud coffee from Allpress, made with La Marzocco was not impressive either – why can’t they make a good coffee with the combination of good coffee beans and best espresso machine? However, one thing good about them was a good & friendly service – the staff promptly responded to their mistake and offered a nice gesture. Overall score, average.

The LUXE Restaurant Bar Music @ Old Spitalfields Market

Old Spitalfields Marketに新しく出来たレストラン・バー、「The LUXE」。Commercial Streetに面しており、ニワトリのロゴ入りの薄いブルーの旗が目印。黒とシルバーと基調にした広々とした店内は、ヒップなイーストエンダー達の夜のたまり場にぴったりといった感じだけれど、行ったのは昼下がりだったからか客もまばら。ランチメニューはイングリッシュ・ブレックファストやパンケーキ、バーガー、マカロニチーズ等、イギリス料理がメインで、私たちはAll Day Breakfast（朝だけじゃなく一日提供される朝食メニュー）をオーダーした。私はイギリス人の大好物の甘ったるいベイクト・ビーンズが嫌いなので、シンプルなベーコンと目玉焼きとトーストのセット。Mは目玉焼き、ベイクト・ビーンズ、マッシュルームとトマトのソテー、バブル＆スクィーク（イギリス版お好み焼き）、ベジー・ソーセージ（野菜で出来たソーセージ）、トーストのセットを頼んだ。味の方は期待はずれ。ベーコンは塩辛くてちょっとドライ。私はもともとイギリス定番のback bacon（バック・ベーコン。豚ロースが原料、脂肪分が少ない）より、アメリカ式のstreaky bacon（ストリーキー・ベーコン、豚バラが原料、脂肪分がより多い）の方が好きなのだ。ダイエットには良くないんだけど。そしてトーストもぱさぱさしてる。Mの料理も可もなく不可もなく、特にベジー・ソーセージはジューシーさのかけらもなく段ボールを食べてるよう。そもそも、ソーセージは肉の脂肪を含んでこそ美味しいのであって、野菜で作るには無理があると思うんだけど。でも、デザートのPastel de Nata（パスティシュ・デ・ナタ。ポルトガルのエッグタルト）は、クリームの甘みが絶妙で美味しかった。今日注文した料理はさておき、ちょっと冷たい感じのインテリアではあるが、居心地は悪くない。マーケット側には、外にもテーブルを出しているので、マーケットを眺めながら、一杯飲むのもいいかも。

‘The LUXE‘ restaurant and bar is the latest newcomer to Old Spitalfields Market. Facing busy Commercial Street, you can spot the LUXE with their light blue flag with chicken logo. The interior based on black and silver looks like a typical place for hip East Enders to hang out for a drink, but we went there at late afternoon and there was only few people in the spacious restaurant. The lunch menu is basically British, such as English breakfasts, pancakes, burgers, and macaroni & cheese etc. We ordered All Day Breakfast. M got eggs, toast, baked beans, mushroom, tomato, Bubble (& Squeak), and veggie sausage. I chose bacon, eggs, & toast, as I don’t like sweet baked beans. But the taste was disappointing, to be honest. My bacon was a bit too salty and dry – maybe because I prefer American style fatty streaky bacon to British regular back bacon (it’s not good for diet though). And the toast was moistureless. M’s dish was ‘blunt’, according to him, and the vegie sausage was like eating cardboard. To my point of view, sausage has to have some fat from meat and has to be succulent, and therefore I would think it is almost impossible to make tasty sausages out of vegetables. I might have been too harsh to their food, but we have to admit that their coffee and a desert, Pastel de Nata (Portuguese egg tart) was pretty good. The LUXE is a bit edgy but it was quite comfortable to stay. There are outside tables facing market square, and it would be nice to have a drink outside and enjoy the markets and people.
