UK’s Roads are the Most Congested in Europe

今日のメトロ紙やデイリー・メール紙の記事によると、イギリスはヨーロッパで最も道路が混雑している国らしい。オランダのカーナビ大手・Tom Tomの調査によると、ヨーロッパで最も交通渋滞のヒドい50都市のうち、16都市がイギリスにあり、8都市が上位20都市にランクインしている。ロンドンはブリュッセル、ワルシャワに続き第3位。それにエジンバラ（7位）、マンチェスター（10位）が続く。ちなみに、フランスは4都市がトップ10が入っている。

この調査は、Tom Tomのネットワークから自動的に集められた、8000億ものデータを元に、主要な道路の日々の混雑状況をパーセンテージ化したもの。ちなみに、「congestion（混雑）」の定義は、交通の流れが原因で、通常1時間の道程が20分以上余計にかかることそうだ。

ロンドンは昨年に比べて、0.2％交通渋滞が減少したっていうけど、0.2％ってたかがしれてる。前にも書いたけれど（過去の記事）、ロンドンはとにかく道路工事が多く、迂回や道幅縮小が交通渋滞の主な原因の一つだと思うんだけれど、まあ古い街で道幅も狭いし、地下鉄も100年以上も前のものだから、仕方がないか。

According to articles on Metro and the Daily Mail, UK’ roads are the most congested across Europe. Among 50 European cities most affected by a traffic jam, sixteen are British cities and eight in the top 20, according to new research conducted by Tom Tom. London is ranked the third, after Brussels and Warsaw, and Edinburgh (7th) and Manchester (10th) follow. Among others, four of the top 10 cities are in France.

The figures work out the percentage of main roads suffering daily congestion based on up to 800 billion pieces of data automatically updated from TomTom’s network. Congestion is defined as a journey that should be one hour taking at least 20 minutes longer because of traffic flow.

Tom Tom said that London’s traffic flow has decreased by 0.2% in the past year, but it sounds nothing to me. As I wrote last year (past entry), London embraces numerous roadworks everyday, causing diversions and reduced road widths and resulting in traffic jams. London is an old city and London Underground is over 100 years old, therefore upgrading the system is not avoidable…

The Sky Arts Street Galleries: Rankin

芸術・アート専門チャンネルSky Artsが、イギリス人の人気写真家・Rankinと組み、イギリスの６都市（ロンドン、マンチェスター、バーミンガム、エジンバラ、ニューキャッスル、リバプール）の街角を屋外アートギャラリーに変えるというプロジェクト「Sky Arts Street Galleries」が8月16日から始まった。

Rankinは、ファッションやポートレートを手がける写真家で、ケイト・モスやマドンナなどのセレブから、エリザベス女王やブレア元首相など著名人を撮影したポートレート写真で有名。また彼の写真は、ナイキやコカ・コーラ、ロレアルなど大手企業の広告にも使われている。慈善活動も行っており、女性の地位向上を目指す「Women’s Aid」の広報キャンペーンに参加したり、昨年開催した「Rankin Live（ランキン・ライブ）」では、22年間の活動をまとめた回顧展とともに、1000人の一般人を撮影したポートレート写真を展示、その被写体は£50でそのポートレートを受け取り、その収益は全てOxfam（オックスファム）に寄贈された。

Sky ArtsはRankinにStreet Galleriesプロジェクトの作品づくりを委託。モダン・アート（写真最上）クラシック音楽（写真上から2枚目）、デザイン（写真3枚目左）、文学など様々なアートの形を表現した、Rankinの16枚の作品は、ロンドンでは、Tottenham Court Road（トッテナムコートロード）沿いのビルボード、ポスター、バス停、電話ボックスなど様々な場所で、目にする事ができる。

Art-oriented television channels, Sky Arts has launched the “Sky Arts Street Galleries” on August 16th, a new project that will transform the streets of the six UK cities (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Liverpool) to an outdoor art gallery, in association with popular British portrait and fashion photographer, Rankin.

Rankin is world famous for his iconic images from A-list celebrities such as Kate Moss and Madonna to Queen Elizabeth and former prime minister Tony Blair. He also has shot some world-renowned campaigns including Nike, Coca Cola and L’Oreal. He also involves in some charity activities. He has donated his services to publicity campaigns for the charitable organization “Women’s Aid“. Last year, he produced “Rankin Live“, where he brought the retrospective of the last 22 years of his photographic work, together with the portraits of 1,000 British public. Each person who took part received a print of their portrait for £50, and all the profits were donated to Oxfam.

Sky Arts commissioned Rankin to produce sixteen images, each representing a different form of art such as modern art (the top photo), classical music (the second photo), design (left on the third photo), literature and so on. You can see his works at billboard, poster, bus stop, phone box and advertising space, all on Tottenham Court Road.
