Festival of the World @ Southbank Centre

今年の夏のロンドンオリンピック・パラリンピックにあわせ、サウスバンク・センターでは、Festival of the World（6月1日〜9月9日）が開催されている。スポーツや芸術が若者の夢や向上心を刺激すると考えた、近代オリンピックの創立者であるピエール・ド・クーベルタン男爵にインスピレーションを得たというこのフェスティバル、芸術は人々の人生を変えられることを証明するのを目的に、アート、音楽、ダンス、詩、文学、コメディなど世界の文化イベントの他、マーケットや「urban beach（人工ビーチ）」など、様々な催しが行われている。明日29日から始まるパラリンピックと同時に、障碍を持つアーティストたちの作品を紹介するイベント「Unlimited（8月30日〜9月9日）」もスタートする予定。

Southbank Centre has been hosting Festival of the World this summer from June 1 to September 9, coinciding with the London 2012 Olympics/Paralympics. The festival is inspired by the founder of the Olympic movement, Baron Pierre de Coubertin who believed that the arts and sport could raise the aspirations of young people. During the period, Southbank offers a variety of international cultural events such as art, music, dance, poetry, literature, and comedy, as well as markets, urban beach and more to demonstrate how art can transform lives. Corresponding with the start of Paralympic Games tomorrow on August 29, ‘Unlimited‘ (Aug 30–Sep 9) will showcase art and culture commissions by disabled and deaf artists.

廃材を使用して大規模作品を創っているロンドンベースのアート集団・Robots>>>>の「Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down（下を見なければ全てが美しく見える）」。2011年のFestival of Britainで使用した木材や鉄を再利用している。

“Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down” by the London-based arts collective Robots>>>>, who build large sculptures from recycled and reclaimed materials, have made these figures predominantly from wood and steel used at Southbank Centre’s 2011 Festival of Britain.

世界から集められた布地で作られた、15mの高さの「Under the Baobab（バオバブの木の下で） 」は、Pirate Technicsが制作。

15 metres tall “Under the Baobab” is made from stacks of fabric rings using material from around the globe, created by Pirate Technics.

Trey WatkinsとCameron Brownの二人のアーティストの作品「Perspectives（視点）」。一見、無造作に置かれたアルファベットだけれど、一定のアングルから見るとメッセージが浮かび上がる。

Sunbury Antiques Market @ Kempton Park Racecourse

Waterloo（ウォータールー）駅から電車で約45分。Kempton Park Racecourse（ケンプトン・パーク競馬場）で、毎月第2・最終火曜日に開催される、イギリス最大アンティーク・マーケット、Sunbury Antiques Market（サンバリー・アンティーク・マーケット）に初めて行った。

1979年に始まった、愛称「Kempton（ケンプトン）」「Kempton Park（ケンプトン・パーク）」で親しまれるこのマーケット、屋内に350、屋外に350以上出店する大規模なもので、早朝6時半から始まり、昼頃には多くが店仕舞する。西洋・東洋、アフリカと国を問わず、家具や銀製品、ジュエリー、洋服、おもちゃ、食器類といった正統派アンティークから、訳の分からないガラクタやオブジェまで、古ければ何でもあり。入場料・駐車場は無料で値段も安く、プロのディーラーも掘り出し物目当てに仕入れにくるそうだ。日本人の駐妻御用達という噂どおり、日本人とおぼしきグループも多い。インターネットで調べると、日本人ブロガーの記事が延々と出てきてびっくり。どれくらい知識があるかは別として（別に知識がなくても好きならいいと思うけど）、日本人はアンティークが好きなんだなとつくづく思う。

かくいう私はアンティーク知識はほぼゼロ。まあ1時間ほど見ればいいかと、気軽に足を踏み入れたのだが、そのスケールに圧倒される。アンティークにさほど興味はなったけれど、ぶらぶら見て回るだけでとにかく楽しくて、もっと早い時間に行けば良かったと後悔した。うちから遠いし、朝早いのは苦手なので、今度はいつ行けることやら。

For the first time, I went to Sunbury Antiques Market, held bi-monthly (second and last Tuesday) at Kempton Park Racecourse, 45-minute train journey from Waterloo station.

Started in 1979, Sunbury Antiques Market is the largest antique market in UK. From 6:30 AM till sellers decide to wrap up their stools (normally around noon), over 700 stallholders (350 stalls inside & over 350 outside) sell anything old – from mainstream antiques such as furniture, silverware, jewellery, ceramics, kitchenallia, vintage fashion, and toys, to ethnic crafts and bric-a-brac which I have no clue what it is for. Entrance fee & parking are free, and the prices are cheaper than more touristy Portobello Market, and it attracts professional dealers as well. It is popular among chū-tsuma (駐妻: wives of Japanese expats), and you can see plenty of them there, as well as Koreans and Chinese who may look the same. When I searched about the market on the internet, the result showed loads of Japanese female bloggers talking about it – Japanese women really love antiques, no matter if they have any knowledge or not.

I went there casually with almost zero knowledge in antiques but just for fun, thinking that one-hour stay was well enough, but I was wrong. I was utterly overwhelmed by its scale. I am not a big antique fan, but it was so exciting that I stayed there until most of the dealers finished packing their stuffs. I should have gone there much earlier (I arrived at around 10:30 AM)! I am a night owl and the market is far from home, so I don’t know when I can go there next time…

Comptoir Gascon @ Smithfield – My Favorite Place for Cakes

800年の歴史を持つ、イギリス最大の食肉卸売市場のSmithfield Market（スミスフィールド・マーケット）の北側、Charter Street（チャーター・ストリート）にあるComptoir Gascon（コントワール・ガスコン）は、同じエリアにあるミシュラン一つ星フレンチ・Club Gascon（クラブ・ガスコン）やスローン・スクエアのLe Cercle（ル・セルクル）系列のフレンチ・ビストロ＆デリ。他２店よりカジュアルでリーズナブル、また店内にはケーキやパン、チーズ、フォアグラ、テリーヌ、ドライソーセージ、ジャムなどを売るフード・ホールや、ワインセラーも備えており、食事じゃなくても気軽に入れる。フランス南西部の料理と食品専門のこのお店、紫のベルベットチェアやインテリアがM好みでないので、食事したことはないけれど、巷の人気は高い（レビュー）。私にとっては、ここはロンドンでは珍しく、上品で繊細な日本人好みのケーキが入る貴重な場所。前を通るとついドアを開けてしまう。大きさも適度で、甘さも絶妙。値段も意外と安い。でも美味しすぎて危険なので、あまり足を向けないようにしている。ここのパンも同じく美味。

Comptoir Gascon is a French bistro & delicatessen specialising in food & wine from the southwest France, located on Charter Street on the north of the Smithfield Market, which is UK’s largest wholesale meat market with 800 years of history. It is a part of the same family with Michelin-starred Club Gascon on the other side of Smithfield and Le Cercle near Sloane Square, but more casual and reasonable than other two. There is a wine cellar and food hall, selling cakes, pastries and breads, as well as French delicacies such as foie gras, terrines, cheese, dry cure meats, and jams. So you don’t have to eat in but can just browse around. We’ve never had a meal there, as M doesn’t like its interior including purple velvet chairs, but the reviews of this small bistro are generally good. But for me, Comptoir Gascon is one of the few places selling fine cakes in London as well as quality breads, and I end up going in the store every time I pass by. Perfect size and perfect taste, and it’s not expensive either – how can I resist it?! It is so delicious and too dangerous for diet, that I try not to walk in front of it…

Art Animals @ Spitalfields

Spitalfields（スピタルフィールズ）のBishops Squareにそびえ立つ山羊。3.5mもの高さを誇る彫刻作品「I Goat」は、昨年創設されたSpitalfields Sculpture Prize（スピタルフィールズ彫刻賞）を受賞した、スコットランド人彫刻家Kenny Hunter（ケニー・ハンター）の作品で、昨年11月23日よりこの場所に置かれている。

ハンター曰く、「山羊は独立心と非服従と関連づけられる」そう。同時に、スピタルフィールズに流れ着いた、多様な移民たちのシンボルであり、またロンドンを新しい住処とした彼らが直面した困難、抑圧、そして貧困などの迫害や犠牲を表す。山羊が載っている木箱は、マーケット（市場）と、移り変わる文化と人口流入の歴史を象徴している。言われてみれば、そうなのかと納得したりもするが、通りすがりの人たちは、「あ、山羊か」と思うくらいで、説明なしではここまで考えつかないだろう。

”I Goat“  is the winning work of the inaugural Spitalfields Sculpture Prize 2010, placed in Spitalfields‘ Bishops Square from November 23, 2010. The goat, hand-sculpted by Scottish sculptor Kenny Hunter, stands on the top a stack of packing crates and reaches the 3.5metre high.

“Goats are associated with non-conformity and being independently-minded” according to the artist. The goat stands as a symbol for the various waves of migration that have found sanctuary in  Spitalfields. It is also an image of persecution and sacrifice, reflecting how each successive group of immigrants has faced their own combination of conflict, oppression and poverty, all eventually finding a new home in London. The crates refers the market as well as the area’s history of transience and human flux. I can get those hidden meaning of the goat if I read the description, but I wonder how many passersby would get it without reading the explanation.

その山羊の近くには、6羽の白うさぎたち。作者のPaul Cox（ポール・コックス）は、このあたりが昔、priory（小修道院）に隣接した牧草地であったことを念頭において、この「Spitalfields Spirit」を制作したそう。

以前、I Goatが今ある場所にあったRed Churchも、居場所は変わったけれど、Bishops Squareにまだ健在。

Red Church, which used to be placed where I Goat is now, is still there in Bishops Square, though it was relocated few metres away.

Camden Passage Antique Market @ Angel, Islington

イズリントン・エンジェルにある有名なアンティーク・マーケット、Camden Passage（カムデン・パッセージ）。1960年代にアンティーク・マーケットが開かれるようになった。昔ながらの店構えを残すカムデン・パッセージは、外国人がイメージするイギリスを体現している。昨日のショーディッチのマーケットと比べるとずいぶん落ち着きがあって、のんびり散策するのにぴったり。トラムの車庫であった建物にテナントとして入っていたり、脇に入った小道に小さい店を構えていたり、屋台を出していたりと、店の形態も様々だ。

マーケットの開かれる毎週水・土曜日以外も開いている店もあり、またElk in the WoodsやBreakfast Clubといったカフェやパブ、毛糸のお店Loopや可愛い雑貨屋のSMUG、オーガニックのフローズン・ヨーグルトを売るFrae、高級チョコレートを扱うPaul A Young、またイギリス人女優のSadie Frost（サディ・フロスト。ジュード・ロウの元妻）とJemima Frenchが経営するFrostFrenchと言うブティックもあって、マーケットがない日でも人通りが絶えない。

Camden Passage is known for its antiques shops, and hosts antique market founded in the 1960s on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings. The street still keeps old storefronts and signage and the good old Britishness that foreign visitors imagine of. It is much more tranquil and better looking in compare to the anarchic Shoreditch market, and perfect place for strolling around. There are different styles of shops: tenants in a former tram shed, small shops in an arcade or on a side alley, and market stools on the street.

The street is never be deserted as many shops open other than market days and there are also non-antique shops to attract visitors, such as cafés and pubs like The Elk in the Woods and The Breakfast Club, Loop yarn shop, SMUG lifestyle store, organic frozen yoghurt shop Frae, Paul A Young chocolaterie, and FrostFrench boutique owned by British actress Sadie Frost (Jude Law’s ex) and Jemima French.
