Westfield Stratford City

オリンピックのシンクロデュエット決勝を見に行った帰り、オリンピックパーク横にある、昨年9月オープンのヨーロッパ最大のショッピングモール・Westfield Stratford Cityに立ち寄った（過去エントリー参照）。オリンピック開催中だけあって、人混みがすごい。でも、観客がオリンピックにお金を使い過ぎて財布のひもを締めているせいか不況のせいか、各店舗内は意外と空いている。買い物は我慢できても空腹は我慢できないのか、フードコートはさすがに席の奪い合い状態。ショップはありきたりのチェーン店が多いけれど、フードコートは、マクドナルドやスターバックスと言った大型チェーンだけでなく、世界各国の料理を取り揃え、Rosa’sやComptoir Libanaisなどの人気店も入居している。

結局この日は観戦疲れ・人疲れして全部見れなかったので、パラリンピック終了後、人気の少ない平日に一度ゆっくり見て回りたい。

I stopped by at the Europe’s biggest shopping center, Westfield Stratford City (see past entry), after attending the synchronized swimming duet final during the Olympics. There was a lot of people, but inside of the stores was rather empty, probably due to the recession or visitors trying to save money after spending a lot for visiting the Olympics. However, there was a war over empty seats here and there at its food court, as people cannot live without eating. The majority of shops at Westfield were boring chains, but it’s worth trying their food court where you can eat wide range of western and ethnic food at London’s popular eateries such as Rosa’s and Comptoir Libanais, not only at mega chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks.

I couldn’t fully enjoy the mall because I was exhausted from watching the game and the large crowd, but I will try again when is less busy during weekdays after the Paralympics.

ストラトフォード駅とWestfieldの間にある、250mの長さのチタン製モニュメント「Stratford Shoal（ストラトフォードの魚群）」。このチタンは何と日本製（読売新聞）/ 250 metre-long titanium sculpture “Stratford Shoal“, placed in between Westfield and Stratford Station.

The Folly Bar & Restaurant @ Monument

Monument（モニュメント）駅のすぐ側にあるバー＆レストラン、Folly（フォリー）。以前に書いたサウスバンクのRefineryや、同じくシティにあるAnthologist（アンソロジスト）と同様、Drake & Morganの経営。とにかく巨大な店で、1階のみならず地下1階もある。店内は羽根？に覆われたランプシェードや、テーブルによって色や形が違う椅子など、少し遊び心を加えた、カジュアルかつモダンに仕上がっている。でもその広大さのせいか、どうも落ち着かない。これが満席にでもなろうものなら、ウルサくて仕方がないんじゃないか。

シティのビジネスマンたちが朝食を取れるよう、平日の朝はなんと7時半からオープン。キッチンは日曜以外は夜10時まで休みなく開いており、いつでも食事が可能で、バーは週末は夜中までやっている。この日、まだ勤務時間中（休憩中？）の4時頃には、すでにビールやワインを飲んでいるスーツ姿のオジサンたちが、バーカウンターにちらほら。この国の人たちは本当に酒好きだ。夕方になると、平日でも、老若男女、パブやバーに群がって立ち飲みしている。

話は少しそれたが、Follyいわく「tried and tested recipes from across the globe（世界中のレシピを試した）」というメニューは、カジュアルなモダン・ブリティッシュ／ヨーロピアン／アメリカ／アジアと、何でもあり。でも普通に「グルメ」サンドイッチやハンバーガー、ステーキなどもある。私たちはステーキ・サンドイッチ（£8.75）を注文。サンドイッチとしては値がはるにも関わらずお子様サイズ、サラダやフライドポテトなどの付け合わせもない。その代わり、ホースラディッシュを混ぜた大量のマヨネーズのお皿が（カロリー高過ぎ！）。チャバッタはトーストされておらず、ステーキの味も平凡。はっき言って期待外れ。Follyは、食べ物にこだわりがある人のためのお店じゃなく、ちょっと洒落たパブで、手っ取り早く食事が必要な時や仕事帰り（仕事中でも）の一杯にぴったりの、シティに働く人たち向けのお店だと思う。

The Folly is a bar & restaurant near the Monument station. It is under Drake & Morgan management, as well as the Refinery in Southbank (I wrote it before) and Anthologist nearby in the City. The place is huge, and has two floors (ground floor & basement), decorated in casual chic with funky lampshades covered with furs(?) and chairs in different shapes and colours placed in different areas. It is so big and I felt a bit uncomfortable, actually. It was half empty when we went there, but I am afraid that I would loose hearing if the place is full.

The Folly opens from 7:30am on weekdays, for business people who want to have a breakfast before work. Kitchen opens all day without a break and you can dine anytime until 10pm (except Sunday). Bar opens even longer, until midnight on weekend. There were already some businessmen in suits, enjoying a glass of beer at the bar counter at 4pm (isn’t it still office hour or during a break?), when we left. Drinking is a national hobby in UK, and pubs & bars at 6pm are full of people, both sex from young to old, standing, inside and outside, and drinking – but why standing? Don’t they want to relax, sitting down??

I was distracted a little. The Folly “tried and tested recipes from across the globe”, and their food is kind of modern British/European/Americana/Oriental – whatever. But they have also ‘normal’ food such as ‘gourmet’ sandwiches, burgers, and steaks. We ordered steak sandwich (£8.75) today. It was rather pricey as a sandwich, but it was like a kid size and came alone – no chips or little salad. Instead, it came with mayonnaise mixed with horse radish, enough for five sandwiches (too much calories!). Ciabatta bread was not toasted and the steak was boring… it was a disappointment. The Folly is definitely not for foodies, but is more like a convenient and stylish pub for people working in the City, for a quick bite and a glass (or more) of beer after work.

Michael Rakowitz @ Tate Modern Level 2 Gallery

テート・モダンLevel 2 Gallery（テムズ川に面した入口の外にある）で22日に始まった展覧会「The worst condition is to pass under a sword which is not one’s own（最悪の状況は、自分のものではない刀の下を通り過ぎること）」。アメリカ人アーティスト・Michael Rakowitz（マイケル・ラコヴィッツ）が、サダム・フセイン政権下、彼が好んだジュール・ヴェルヌの小説や映画スター・ウォーズ、G.I.ジョー、ワールド・レスリング・フェデレーション（World Wrestling Federation）等の西欧のSFやファンタジーと、イラクのモニュメントや軍や科学活動のつながりを描き出している。

入口は、壁一面が、バグダッドの「Swords of Qādisiyyah/Hands of Victory（勝利の手）」モニュメント前で、米軍兵士や関係者がポーズを決める写真で、埋め尽くされている。次の部屋は、真ん中に日本の兜、第一次世界大戦のドイツ軍ガスマスク、ダース・ベイダーのヘルメット、サダム決死隊（フェダイン・サダム）のヘルメットが並んでウィンドーに飾られており、その周りには、スターウォーズや西洋文化がサダムやイラク軍に与えた影響を示す、手書きの文章が添えられた鉛筆画の展示。次の部屋には、Swords of Qādisiyyahをモチーフとした大型作品「Victory Arch (Strike the Empire Back Series) 」（1980年のスターウォーズのポスターに酷似）が鎮座。足元には、G.I.ジョーのパーツが埋め込まれた、透明のプラスチックでできたサダム決死隊のヘルメットが転がっている。

私はSFには興味がなく、ジュール・ヴェルヌも読んだことがないし、スター・ウォーズも観ていない。プロレスも、子供の頃父親が家のテレビを独占してみていたせいか、大嫌い。G.I.ジョーも、小さい頃に親しんだMに聞くまで知らなかった。伝えようとしていることは分かるけれど、なにぶん興味がない分野なのであんまり心に響かない。でも、アメコミっぽい彼の鉛筆書きのイラストは、なかなかいい味出している。

American artist, Michael Rakowitz‘s new exhibition at Tate Modern Level 2 Gallery (located outside of the entrance facing the Thames river), “The worst condition is to pass under a sword which is not one’s own” started on 22 January. This exhibition investigates the Sadam’s fascination with western science fiction and fantasy, including Star Wars, Jules Verne, World Wrestling Federation and GI Joe, and its influence on Iraqi military and scientific activities during the Saddam regime, according to Tate.

One wall at the entrance is covered with the photos of posing American soldiers and others, taken in front of Swords of Qādisiyyah (Hands of Victory) in Bagdad. In the next room, Fedayeen Saddam helmet together with Japanese samurai helmet, WWI German gas mask, Darth Vader mask are displayed in a show case in the center of the room, surrounded by Rakowitz’s pencil drawn illustrations with handwritten texts, representing the links between Iraq and modern Western culture. The third room hosts “Victory Arch (Strike the Empire Back Series) ” which is resemble to the Swords of Qādisiyyah monument and 1980 Star Wars poster, with Fedayeen helmets made of clear urethane plastic with colorful plastic GI Joe parts.

I am no fan of Si-Fi, and have never read Jules Verne or seen Star Wars. I hate professional wrestling, probably because my father always monopolized only one TV in the house, watching pro wrestling when I was a child. I’ve never heard of GI Joe until M told me about it – he used to play with it. I understand what he is trying to do, but it doesn’t impress me because of the subject matter I am not into – but I like his American comics-style pencil drawn illustrations.
