“Renew” Recycle Bins in the Square Mile

「Renew」は、金融街・シティに約100台設置された、LCDスクリーンが両側に備え付けられたリサイクル用ゴミ箱。爆弾の衝撃にも耐えうる構造の、このつや消しの施されたいかついゴミ箱は、なんと1台3万ポンド。ちなみに、80年代にIRAの爆弾テロがロンドンの経済の中心・シティ等にも及んだこと、またアメリカ同時多発テロ事件やロンドン同時爆破事件以降、テロの脅威が増した事もあり、シティ一帯に置かれているRenewも爆弾仕様になっている。このRenewは、ゴミ箱としての機能だけじゃなく、両側のスクリーンには、平日の午前6時〜午後11時59分まで、経済や一般ニュース、天気予報、スポーツ、ファッション、旅行、アート・娯楽関係の情報に加え、チューブ（地下鉄）やNHS等のローカル情報、緊急時には速報、そして広告が随時流されている。→詳細（英語）

1月26日から徐々に設置が始まっていたにも関わらず、今まで全く気づかなかった。スクリーンは低い位置にあるのでちょっと見にくいけれど、信号やバス待ち、友人などとの待ち合わせの際の暇つぶしにいいかも。Renewには現在、ニューヨークやシンガポール、日本からも引き合いが来ているらしい。

This glossy bomb-proof heavy-duty pods costing £30,000, not only swallow recycle materials such as paper, cans and plastic bottles, but also entertain passersby with a variety of information displayed on the screens. Renew transmits between 6am and 23:59pm each market day, and includes breaking financial and corporate news, general news headlines, weather forecasts and other topics including sport, fashion, travel, the arts and entertainment, as well as updates during emergencies and local information such as Tube and NHS, and of course advertisements as well.  →further details

Although being installed initially from January 26, I’ve never noticed Renew. It is a bit too hard to look at the screen as the screen is low, especially for tall men, but it would help you kill your time while waiting at a traffic light, a bus or your friend, in case you forget your smartphone with you. It is said that other cities abroad such as New York, Singapore and Tokyo are interested in the concept of Renew.

Royal Mail “Simply Drop”: Recycling for Cash

最近、携帯をiPhoneに換えたので、古い携帯をロイヤル・メール（Royal Mail・イギリス郵政公社）の「Simply Drop」でリサイクルすることにした。Simply Dropは、要らなくなった携帯、デジタルカメラ、MP3プレーヤー、インク・カートリッジをリサイクルするシステムで、Greater London Authority Recycle for London（ロンドンを管轄する大ロンドン庁のリサイクル部門）やMet Police National Mobile Phone Crime Unit（ロンドン警視庁携帯犯罪班）、その他リサイクル団体と協力体制を取っている。しばらく前に郵便局に行った時に見かけて、新しい携帯が来たら利用しようかと考えていた。ドラッグストアチェーンのBootsでも、携帯をリサイクルするとポイントがもらえるのだが、私の型番だと300ポイント（£3相当）。Simply Dropだと£8、Mの分とあわせて£16になるというので、ロイヤル・メールにした。ちなみに、インク・カートリッジは、スポンサーとなっているDogs Trustという慈善団体に寄付している。

リサイクルの仕方は簡単。

1．ウェブサイトで登録
2．登録すると、ロイヤル・メールから送られてくる送料無料の封筒に入れて投函
3．ロイヤル・メールで精査の後、報酬が支払われる

進捗状況は、ウェブページでチェック可能。報酬の受け取りは、ペイパル口座への振込、郵便局で現金受け取り、郵便為替の郵送の中から選べ、また報酬を5つの慈善団体の1つに寄付するという選択肢もある。私はペイパルでの支払いを希望（寄付しません、ごめんなさい！）した。リサイクルして、お金ももらえて、良いこと尽くめ。でも今週木、金曜日とまた郵便局がストになりそうなので、送った携帯がちゃんと届くか、ちょっと心配。

I switched my mobile to iPhone recently, so I sent out M’s and my old phones to the Royal Mail‘s “Simply Drop” program. Simply Drop is a recycle scheme for unwanted mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players, as well as household inkjet cartridges, and you can earn money by recycling, though it depends on the model. Royal Mail Simply Drop works with the Greater London Authority Recycle for London team and the Met Police National Mobile Phone Crime Unit, as well as well-established recycling organizations. I saw the scheme when I went to a post office a while ago, and thought about using it when I get my new mobile. A drug store chain Boots gives Advantage Card points when you recycle your mobile with them, but I could get only 300 points (equivalent to £3) from Boots. I chose Simply Drop because we could get £8 each, £16 for both of us. As for inkjet cartridges, I donate to Dogs Trust recycling program, with which I become a shelter dog sponsor.

How to recycle your mobile is simple.

1．Register your item on the web
2．Send your item in a prepaid envelope sent by Royal Mail when you register
3．Get your payment

You can track your item on the web. Payment can be made either by deposit into your PayPal account, by cash payment from a local Post Office via a text message confirmation, or by Postal Order via post, or you can donate your reward to one of the five charities. I chose PayPal payment (sorry I don’t donate to a charity). Feel good by recycling unwanted item, and receive cash – perfect system! But it will be another big Postal Strikes, again, on this Thursday and Friday – hope our mobiles will arrive safely.

Islington Household Reuse and Recycling Centre @ Holloway

家にたまっていた壊れた家電製品を、Islington（イズリントン）区のHousehold Reuse and Recycling Centre（家庭用品再利用・リサイクルセンター）に持っていった。プラスチックボトルや紙製品、ガラスは、近くのリサイクル用ゴミ集積所（写真にある、大きなキャスター付きコンテナ）に廃棄できるのだけれど、電池や家電製品等は、このリサイクルセンターに持っていく。

イギリスのリサイクル率は、他のヨーロッパ諸国に比べて低いと批判されてきたが、最近官民をあげてリサイクルに力を入れており、リサイクル状況は改善されてきている。政府のTVコマーシャルや新聞広告、メディアでも多々取り上げられていて、人々の意識も高まっているようだ。Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs／環境、食品、地方問題局)の調べでは、イングランドの家庭用ゴミのリサイクル率は、１９９７−９８年の８％から２００６−７年には３１％になった。約７５０万人の人口を抱えるロンドンは、年間３４０万トンのゴミを排出、リサイクル率は約２５％程度（recycle for Londonより）。残りは、埋め立て地行きとなる（イギリスでは、ゴミ焼却の割合は２００６年統計で９％）。６０％の家庭用ゴミがリサイクルできる事から、まだまだ改善の余地がある。しかし大都市のロンドンには、エコ熱狂者から、ゴミ問題無関心、またお上に何かしろと言われると反抗したくなるへそまがりまで、雑多な人々が集まっているので、一筋縄ではいかないだろう。

それにしても気になるのが、若者を中心にゴミのポイ捨てが多いこと。有名なショッピング街、オックスフォード・ストリートはチューインガムの跡で、歩道が水玉模様となっている。ゴミ箱（ちなみにイギリス英語ではBin／ビンという）のすぐ近くにゴミが散乱してる事も多く、なぜ目の前にあるゴミ箱に捨てられないのか不思議だったりする。スポーツジムの友人（２０代の女優で、ファッションも素敵）が、チューインガムの包み紙を、何気なく堂々と床に落として平然としていたのを見て、びっくりした。もちろん、地域によって状況は違い、「上品」なエリア（ケンジントン＆チェルシー区など）は、ゴミはほとんど落ちてない。ちなみにイギリスでのゴミ出しについては、All Aboutに詳しく書いてありますので、ご興味のある方は、読んでみて下さい。

We brought all the junks & broken electrical, small appliances and batteries to Islington‘s Household Reuse and Recycling Centre. You can discard glass, plastic bottles, and papers at a nearby recycling bay around the corner, but we bring other recyclable stuffs to the center.

Recycling in UK is often criticized as low in compare to other European countries, but it is improved recently due to the government campaign, TV commercials and newspaper ads, and media coverages. According to Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) research,  household waste recyling rates in England raised from 8% (1997-98) to 31% (2006-07). London with population of 7.5 millions, produces 3.4 million tons each year and recycle rate is over 25% today (from recycle for London website) – the rest goes to landfills (in 2006, only 9% of rubbish is incinerated). But 60 per cent of what we throw away can be recycled, so there’s space for improvement. But I would think it is difficult as London is a melting pot, from green-fanatics to ‘I am not interested in eco’ type, and people who want to go against what you are told to by a ‘Nanny state‘.

What I don’t like more than anything is the littering on the street by mainly young people. The side walks of Oxford street, which is a famous shopping area of London, is dotted with chewing gums. I am perplexed to see trash around the trash can (‘bin’ in British English) – why people cannot put a trash in a trash can in front of you?? I was surprised when I saw my friend at a sports club, who is an actress in 20s and  in a cool fashion, very naturally drop a chewing gum paper on the gym floor. Of course it depends on the area – you don’t see much trash on the street in a ‘sophisticated’ area such as Kensington and Chelsea.
