Cologne Christmas Market @ Southbank

今年で3回目となるCologne Christmas Marketが12月23日まで、テムズ川沿いのSouthbank Centre/Royal Festival Hall（サウス・バンク・センター／ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールとLondon Eye（ロンドン・アイ）の間で開催中。伝統的なドイツのクリスマス・マーケットをロンドンに再現したこのマーケットには、60近くの木造のシャレーが並び、ブラートヴルスト（ドイツのソーセージ）、グリューワイン、ハート形のジンジャーブレッド、ローストしたアーモンドやキャンディーなどのフード＆ドリンク、そして手作りのおもちゃやジュエリー、レース、ろうそく、陶芸品や、クリスマスツリーのオーナメントなどの工芸品を売っている。また、メリーゴーランドや、子供向けの30分のショーが行われるSanta’s Secret Villageもある。

写真は去年のものだけれど、去年も今年も基本的に変わってない。何年か前、ウィーンに旅行した時にクリスマス・マーケットを体験したけれど、サウスバンクのと何かが違う。何が違うかと考えたら、ウィーンのクリスマス・マーケットは、もっときらびやかに飾られていて活気があり、訪れている人々もとても幸せそうだった。でもサウスバンクのは、中途半端で盛り上がりに欠け、何だかうら寂しげ。人々もあんまり楽しんでるように見えない。違う文化の伝統を形だけ真似するのではなく、もうひと工夫してほしいところ。

Cologne Christmas Market is taking place for the third time between the Southbank Centre/Royal Festival Hall and London Eye along the River Thames. Bringing a traditional German Christmas Market to London, around 60 traditionally decorated wooden chalets sell German specialty such as “Bratwurst”, a glass of “Glühwein” (German Mulled Wine), gingerbread hearts, roasted almonds and candies, as well as handcrafted gifts, toys, jewelry, hand tatted laces, candles, ceramics and glass ornaments for Christmas tree. There are also the carousel and Santa’s Secret Village that houses 30-minute children’s shows, to entertain small visitors.

These photos are of last year’s, but it is more or less the same this year. I went to Christmas markets in Vienna few years ago, and it was much more fun than the Southbank’s, which is rather sad and depressing. Christmas markets in Vienna was more glittering and lively that gave me true festive feelings. Visitors there looked far more happier than the ones in Southbank who looked bored or little interested. The organizer must work harder, instead of just making a bad copy of a festivity from foreign culture.

A Hot Sunny Day in Southbank

先週末からロンドンは良い天気続き。今日も真っ青な空に太陽が燦々と降り注ぎ、最高気温も30度近くまで上がった。ロンドンでこんな気持ちのいい晴れの日は滅多にないので、天気を満喫しに、久しぶりにサウスバンクに行った。

ランチは、ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールにあるRiverside Terrace Caféで。フレッシュな食材を使ったサンドイッチやスープ、軽食類は、ファーストフードにしては、なかなかいける。広々としたホール内にもテーブルはあるけれど、天気のいい日は、これまた広々とした外のバルコニー席がいい。外にはバーカウンターもあり、カクテルやアルコール類もいただける。

It’s been a nice and hot day in last few days. The highest temperature went up around 30ºc today as well with tropical blue sky and bright sun, so we went to Southbank to enjoy the sun.

We had lunch at Riverside Terrace Café in Royal Festival Hall. Fresh home made sandwiches, soup, and light meals at the café are not bad at all, as a quick bite. There are many tables in the hall but it is better to sit outside on a spacious balcony when it’s sunny. There is also a bar counter to serve cocktails and alcohol drinks.

ロンドン・アイの向かいにあるJubilee Gardens（ジュビリー・ガーデンズ）では、天気のいい日にはロンドンのどんな小さな公園でも見かけるように、人々が日向ぼっこ＋日焼けをエンジョイ。

Many people were sunbathing in the Jubilee Gardens across the London Eye, like any other small or large parks in London in the sun.

ジュビリー・ガーデンの横に設置された、チャンネル4系テレビ局E4が主催するUdderbelly（Udderは牛の乳房、bellyはお腹）のステージ。今年2年目となるUdderbellyでは、スタンダップ・コメディ（イギリスの一人漫才・漫談）やキャバレー、コンサート、ダンス・ショー等が、2ヶ月に渡って行われる（5月13日〜7月18日）。空気で膨らませた、逆さまの紫色の牛は、何だかヘンだけれど妙に可愛い。会場内には、カフェやパブ等が出店していて、ショーがない時も人で賑わっている。

A stage of E4 (digital TV channel of Channel 4)  Udderbelly sits next to the Jubilee Gardens. In its second year, Udderbelly hosts two months of  a variety of shows such as stand-up comedy, cabaret, music, dance and family shows (May 13 – July 18). The inflatable giant upside-down purple cow is quirky and cute. There are café and bars inside the tent and you can enjoy drinks and food even while no show taking place.

Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians @ Royal Festival Hall

10月31日（土）にRoyal Festival Hall（ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホール）であったコンサート「Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians」に行ってきた。Mがスティーヴ・ライヒのファンで、2006年にもバービカン・センターでのコンサートに行ったのだが、彼はちょくちょくロンドンに来ているようで、時々コンサートの案内を見かける。

今回のコンサートでは、ロンドンに本拠を置く室内オーケストラ、London Sinfonietta（ロンドン・シンフォニエッタ）と共演。二人が手拍子で音楽を奏でる「クラッピング・ミュージック（手拍子の音楽）」、パット・メセニーのために作曲された「エレクトリック・カウンターポイント」、打楽器奏者4人と鍵盤楽器奏者2人が演奏する「六重奏曲（Sextet）」、そしてミニマル・ミュージックを代表する作曲家であるライヒの代表作の一つである「18人の音楽家のための音楽（Music for 18 Musicians）」の4曲が演奏された。私の勝手な感想（ライヒファンの方の気を害したらごめんなさい）。ライヒ本人が演奏したクラッピング・ミュージックは、フラメンコのミュージシャンの方が上手。エレクトリック・カウンターポイントは、パット・メセニーの音楽は、男のセンチメンタリズムっぽくって嫌いなので（Mは大ファンだけど）×（バツ）。残り2曲はなかなか良かった。しかし、ミニマル・ミュージックは「反復音楽」と呼ばれるだけあって、多少の違いはあるものの、ずーっと同じような音楽が延々と続く。「六重奏曲」は25分間だけれど、「18人の音楽家のための音楽」は何と1時間。同じリズムの繰り返しが眠気を催し、気づくとウトウト、夢も何回も見たが、起きても眠りに落ちる前と同じような音楽が流れているから、聞き逃した気がしない。ミニマル・ミュージックの醍醐味は、微細な変化を聞き取ることらしいが、私はそこまでの域に達っしていないし、達する気もない。でも、起きていても寝ていても気持ちの良いコンサートだった。

そう言えば、この日はハロウィーンだったけれど、全く仮装したり騒いでる人たちは見なかったな。

We went the Royal Festival Hall for the concert “Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians” on Saturday, October 31. M is a fan of Steve Reich, and we also went to his concert at Barbican Centre a while ago. It seems that Reich comes to London once in a while, as I see the information of his concerts in London sometimes.

In this concert, Reich played together with London Sinfonietta and performed four of his works – Clapping Music for two musicians clapping, Electric Counterpoint composed for Pat Metheny, Sextet for percussion and keyboards, and Music for 18 Musicians, one of the most important work of Reich as a pioneer of minimalist music. Here is my stupid opinions (and I am sorry if I offend some of the loyal Reich fans). Probably Flamenco musicians would do a better job for Clapping Music. I don’t like Pat Metheny as his musics represents men’s sentimentalism for me, so I couldn’t stand Electric Counterpoint. I like other two works, but as minimalist music is often defined as reiteration of musical phrases, and the similar rhythms continue on, and on, and on, from the start to the end. Sextet was 25 minutes and it was OK, but Music for 18 Musicians was almost 1 hour! The repetition of the music made me dose off sometimes and I even had several dreams during the concert, but I didn’t feel like I missed a lot because the music sounded the same as when I fell a sleep. The whole point of minimalist music is supposed to enjoy a small and slow transformation as the music progress, but I unfortunately haven’t reached the level (and I am afraid I never will).  However, it was a pleasant concert for me either when I was awake or sleeping.

By the way, the day of the concert was Halloween but I didn’t see anyone in a crazy costume or partying…
