Great British Railways: Royal Mail World’s First “Intelligent” Stamps

今年8月19日に発行された、ロイヤル・メールの記念切手シリーズの「Great British Railways」。British Rail（イギリス国鉄）が製造した最後の標準クラス9F蒸気機関車「Evening Star」の製造終了50周年を記念して発行された。イギリスの蒸気機関車を取り上げた、初めての記念切手となる。

These are Royal Mail’s special stamps “Great British Railways” issued in August 19, celebrating the 50th anniversary of British Rail’s last steam locomotive, the 9F Class ‘Evening Star’. This is the first in a series of special stamp issues commemorating classic British locomotives.

一見したら普通の切手だけれど、これはロイヤル・メールいわく、世界初の「インテリジェント」切手なのだそうだ（Royal Mail プレスリリース）。iPhoneまたはAndroidを搭載したスマートフォンを通して切手を見ることで、画像認識技術が作動し、ロイヤル・メールが制作したオンライン専用コンテンツが立ち上がるという、切手において世界初のシステムで、9月3日よりスタートした。JunaioというアプリをインストールしたスマートフォンでGreat British Railways切手を見ると、1936年に郵便局によって作られたドキュメンタリーで有名になったW・H・オーデンの詩「The Night Mail」を、ドクター・フー出演俳優のBernard Cribbins（バーナード・クリビンス）が読み上げる短編映画が再生される。この技術は、ロイヤル・メールが将来発行する記念切手のいくつかにも採用される予定だそうだ。

These stamps look just ordinary stamps, but Royal Mail claims these are the world’s first “intelligent” stamps (Royal Mail release). Launched on September 3, it is the first in the world to work with image recognition technology, which, when activated by a smartphone on the iPhone or Android platforms, will launch exclusive online content created by Royal Mail. Viewing the Great British Railways stamp,via the Junaio app installed smartphone, will direct you to a short film showing Doctor Who actor Bernard Cribbins reading Auden‘s famous poem “The Night Mail“, first made famous in The Post Office’s own film from 1936. Royal Mail will use the technology available on selected future special stamps.

Royal Mail “Simply Drop”: Recycling for Cash

最近、携帯をiPhoneに換えたので、古い携帯をロイヤル・メール（Royal Mail・イギリス郵政公社）の「Simply Drop」でリサイクルすることにした。Simply Dropは、要らなくなった携帯、デジタルカメラ、MP3プレーヤー、インク・カートリッジをリサイクルするシステムで、Greater London Authority Recycle for London（ロンドンを管轄する大ロンドン庁のリサイクル部門）やMet Police National Mobile Phone Crime Unit（ロンドン警視庁携帯犯罪班）、その他リサイクル団体と協力体制を取っている。しばらく前に郵便局に行った時に見かけて、新しい携帯が来たら利用しようかと考えていた。ドラッグストアチェーンのBootsでも、携帯をリサイクルするとポイントがもらえるのだが、私の型番だと300ポイント（£3相当）。Simply Dropだと£8、Mの分とあわせて£16になるというので、ロイヤル・メールにした。ちなみに、インク・カートリッジは、スポンサーとなっているDogs Trustという慈善団体に寄付している。

リサイクルの仕方は簡単。

1．ウェブサイトで登録
2．登録すると、ロイヤル・メールから送られてくる送料無料の封筒に入れて投函
3．ロイヤル・メールで精査の後、報酬が支払われる

進捗状況は、ウェブページでチェック可能。報酬の受け取りは、ペイパル口座への振込、郵便局で現金受け取り、郵便為替の郵送の中から選べ、また報酬を5つの慈善団体の1つに寄付するという選択肢もある。私はペイパルでの支払いを希望（寄付しません、ごめんなさい！）した。リサイクルして、お金ももらえて、良いこと尽くめ。でも今週木、金曜日とまた郵便局がストになりそうなので、送った携帯がちゃんと届くか、ちょっと心配。

I switched my mobile to iPhone recently, so I sent out M’s and my old phones to the Royal Mail‘s “Simply Drop” program. Simply Drop is a recycle scheme for unwanted mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players, as well as household inkjet cartridges, and you can earn money by recycling, though it depends on the model. Royal Mail Simply Drop works with the Greater London Authority Recycle for London team and the Met Police National Mobile Phone Crime Unit, as well as well-established recycling organizations. I saw the scheme when I went to a post office a while ago, and thought about using it when I get my new mobile. A drug store chain Boots gives Advantage Card points when you recycle your mobile with them, but I could get only 300 points (equivalent to £3) from Boots. I chose Simply Drop because we could get £8 each, £16 for both of us. As for inkjet cartridges, I donate to Dogs Trust recycling program, with which I become a shelter dog sponsor.

How to recycle your mobile is simple.

1．Register your item on the web
2．Send your item in a prepaid envelope sent by Royal Mail when you register
3．Get your payment

You can track your item on the web. Payment can be made either by deposit into your PayPal account, by cash payment from a local Post Office via a text message confirmation, or by Postal Order via post, or you can donate your reward to one of the five charities. I chose PayPal payment (sorry I don’t donate to a charity). Feel good by recycling unwanted item, and receive cash – perfect system! But it will be another big Postal Strikes, again, on this Thursday and Friday – hope our mobiles will arrive safely.

Post Workers Strike hit London

イギリスの通信労働組合（CWU）は、本日水曜朝7時からロンドン全域でストを行う予定だ（BBCニュース）。ここ数ヶ月の間にもう何度もストが行われており、すでに郵便物の遅配が問題となっている。組合によると、2000万個近くの郵便物が、郵便物仕分けセンターに未配達でとどめ置かれているらしい。

CWUは、話し合いもなく一方的に、ロイヤル・メール（Royal Mail）が賃下げや従業員削減策を決定していると抗議。一方ロイヤル・メールは、e-mailの普及と競合他社との競争で、昨年だけでも郵便物の取り扱いが10％以上も下落しており、労働組合の要求は、現実を顧みないものだと批判しており、折り合いがついていない。

私も、オンラインショッピングやオークションで買った品物がなかなか届かず、イライラし通しだ。最近出品したebay落札品も、相手方に届いているか不安になる。日本やアメリカと比べて、ヨーロッパは労働組合の力が強い。労働者の権利が保証されているのは立派だが、消費者の権利が無視されているのが腹立たしい。お互いさっさと妥協して、早く解決してほしいものだ。

ちなみにMは2ヶ月以上前にイタリアから送った荷物がまだ届かないのも、この度重なるストのせいに違いないと言っているが、私は悪評高いポステ・イタリアーネ（Poste Italiane、イタリア郵政公社）のせいだと思う。あちらはイギリス以上にストは日常茶飯事、サービスが最悪なのは周知の事実だからね。恐らく、私たちのパスタ・ソースはどこかの郵便局員に食べられてしまったんだろうなあ。。。

A London-wide 24-hour postal strike will begin early morning today on Wednesday (BBC news), AGAIN. There have been  a number of postal strikes in these months in UK, and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) says up to 20 million items of mail remain undelivered in London sorting offices due to recent strikes.

Royal Mail and the CWU haven’t reached the agreement for the dispute yet. The CWU is protesting against job and pay cuts imposed “without consultation”. Royal Mail condemns that the CWU is refusing to accept the reality of declining mail volumes –over a 10% fall in the last year–, as a result of increased competition from other operators and the growth of e-mail. Royal Mail also insists that it has a large pension deficit.

I am irritated by the recent delay in delivery of what I have purchased via online shopping or on ebay. Also I sent quite a lot of ebay items the other day, and am worrying if the packages have reached to the recipients safely. In Europe, workers unions are quite powerful in compare to USA or Japan. It is great that worker’s rights are well protected, but what about the rights of consumers?? I hope Royal Mail and the CWU will compromise with each other and finish this postal chaos ASAP.

M believes that the reason why we haven’t received 2 packages we sent over 2 months ago from Italy is due to the mess of Royal Mail. But I don’t believe so. The real offender must be Poste Italiane, which gets such a notorious reputation in their service in a country where an industrial action is a national hobby. Probably one of the Poste Italiane workers had party and ate up all our pasta sauces…

British Design Classic Stamps

今日１月１３日発売の、British Design Classics切手を手に入れた。コンコルド、ルートマスター（ロンドンにあった２階建バス）、ロンドン地下鉄マップ、ミニクーパー等、イギリスが世界に誇る20世紀のデザインが主人公の、1st class切手10種。イギリスのメディアでも注目の切手だ。Royal Mailによると、きっかけはミニクーパー生誕50周年。国営放送BBCの番組The Culture Showで行われたイギリスデザインの人気投票の結果を参考に、専門家の意見も取り入れて、10種類のデザインが切手用に選ばれた。The Guardianという新聞のウェブサイトに、それぞれのデザインの詳細があるので、チェックしてみて下さい。また、現在ヤフーオークションにこの切手セットを出品しています。オークションにご興味がある方はここをクリックして下さい。

ちなみに、イギリスの国内通常郵便には、1st classと2nd classがある。1st classは2nd classより割高だ（現在100g以下レター扱いで、1st classは36ペンス、2nd classは27ペンス）。1st classは2nd classより、1st classは1〜2日、2nd classは3日以上かかる、とRoyal Mailのウェブサイトにあるが、通常2nd classでも1〜2日以内で届くことが多いので、私は大事なメール以外は、2nd classを使っている。

I got the Royal Mail British Design Classics Stamps today – on the first day of its sale. 10 x 1st class stamps with 20th century British design classics, such as Concorde, London Underground Map, Mini and London Routemaster bus etc. The stamps are widely reported by the British Media. According to Royal Mail, the starting point was the 50th anniversary of the Mini. Then, with the help of experts in the field, and based on the result of BBC The Culture Show’s top 10 and 20 popular British design, they broadened the idea and chose 10 British design classics. Royal Mail domestic delivery service has 1st class mail and 2nd class mail. 1st class mail is more expensive than 2nd class (ex. letter under 100g cost 36p for 1st class and 27p for 2nd class). According to Royal Mail website, 1st class takes 1-2 days, and 2nd class takes more than 3 days, but usually 2nd class is delivered as fast as 1st class – so I normally use 2nd class mail except important ones.
