William Kentridge: I am not me, the horse is not mine @ Tate Modern

書くのを忘れていたが、テートモダンの「William Klein + Daido Moriyama」展と「A Bit Splash」展を観に行った時、Tanksで最近始まった、南アフリカ出身のアーティスト・William Kentridge（ウィリアム・ケントリッジ）のヴィデオ・インスタレーション「I am not me, the horse is not mine」も見た。反アパルトヘイト運動に従事していた弁護士の両親のもとヨハネスブルグで育ったケントリッジは、素描を使ったアニメーション作品などで、時にアパルトヘイトや植民地支配を取り上げている。

「I am not Me, the Horse is not Mine」は、ケントリッジがデザインと演出を手がけた、ニューヨーク・メトロポリタン歌劇場の上演作品・ドミートリイ・ショスタコーヴィチのオペラ「 The Nose（鼻）」から派生した作品で、Tanksの1室のぐるりの壁に、1920〜30年代のソビエト連邦の映像やロシア・アヴァンギャルドの悲惨な結末など、ロシア・モダニズムをテーマにした8つのビデオ（各6分）を同時投影したもの。ロシア構成主義のグラフィックデザイナーの幾何学的抽象作品のパロディーである、切り絵風の人物を使ったアニメーションや、ロシア革命を含む1920〜30年代の写真・映像と、次から次へと変わっていくスクリーンは、見ていて楽しいけれど、正直意味不明。なのでテレグラフ紙の記事を読んでみたが、それでも分からない。意味を考えずに鑑賞するのが正解かも。

I forgot to write, but when we went to see “William Klein + Daido Moriyama” and “A Bit Splash,” we also saw the new video installation “I am not me, the horse is not mine” (till January 20, 2013) by South African artist William Kentridge at the Tanks at Tate Modern. Kentridge grew up in Johannesburg with his parents who were lawyers involved in the anti-apartheid movement, and he often addresses apartheid and colonialism through his animated films using charcoal draw.

“I am not Me, the Horse is not Mine” started out as the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Dmitry Shostakovich’s opera, The Nose, which Kentridge designed and directed. It is an eight-channel video installation, projected simultaneously across the walls. Each 6-minute film is played on a continuous loop and contributes layers to a story that references Russian modernism, from Soviet film of the 1920s and 1930s to the calamitous end of the Russian avant-garde. The images change rapidly between animation featuring paper cutout of human figures, parodying the geometric abstraction of Russian Constructivist graphic designers, and old photos and films from the 1920s and 1930s, including of Russian Revolution. It was fun to look at, but I didn’t get what it means. I read the Telegraph article, and I still don’t get it…

Meerkat Polka Band Play Corrie Theme Tune

このビデオ「Meerkat Polka Band Play Corrie Theme Tune（ミーアキャット・ポルカバンドによるCorrie（イギリスの人気ドラマ・Coronation Streetの愛称）主題歌の演奏）」は、イギリスの価格比較ウェブサイト・comparethemarket.comのテレビ広告シリーズ「Compare the meerkat」の新作。このコマーシャルは、http://www.comparethemeerkat.comの創始者・Aleksandr Orlov（アレクサンドル・オルロフ）という、ロシア貴族のミーアキャットが主人公で、彼の家族や召使い、友人なども登場する。

「Market」と「Meerkat」をかけたこのCMキャンペーンは、2009年1月のオンエア後、ミーアキャットたちのコミカルな演技？とロシア語訛りオルロフのキャッチフレーズ「Simples（注：文法的には間違い）」で大成功。comparethemarket.comは、イギリスで訪問者数4番目の保険会社のウェブサイトとなり、売上げは倍増、2010年にはマーケットシェアが76％にまでなった。現在アレクサンドルは、約80万人のFacebookファン、5万5000人のTwitterフォロワーを持つ人気者。フォトサイト・Flickrで、家族写真も見られる。かなり面白いCMなので、YouTubeの comparethemeerkat.comチャンネルでチェックしてみて。

This funny video of “Meerkat Polka Band Play Corrie Theme Tune” is the latest advert from TV advertising campaign “Compare the meerkat” for a British price comparison website comparethemarket.com. The adverts feature Aleksandr Orlov, a fictional Russian aristcratic meerkat and the founder of http://www.comparethemeerkat.com, together with his servant, family and friends.

The campaign was launched in January 2009, playing on the similarity between the words “Market” and “Meerkat” and with Orlov’s catchphrase ‘Simples’. It has achieved a great success since then and also has contributed to a commercial success for comparethemarket.com to become the UK’s 4th most visited insurance website, and the site’s overall sales doubled. By 2010 the site had increased its market share by 76%. As of today, Aleksandr has more than 800,000 Facebook fans and around 55,000 followers on Twitter, as well as his Flickr gallery for family portraits. The adverts are quite funny, so check out the videos on YouTube’s channel of comparethemeerkat.com.

Olympic Women’s Volleyball Preliminary Round @ Earl’s Court

オリンピック体験第3弾は、アールズ・コート展示センターで行われたバレーボール女子予選、日本対イギリス戦とイタリア対ロシア戦のダブルヘッダー。会場はアールズ・コート駅西側の出口のすぐ目の前なのだけれど、この日は混乱を避けるためか、東側が出口、西側が入口専用となっていたので、いつもより歩かされた。アールズ・コート展示センターは、以前にも100％デザイン展（参照：2009年/2010年）で数回行ったことがあるが、巨大な倉庫みたいな建物で、照明が少し暗めで床はコンクリートとちょっと殺風景な感じだけれど、中は大勢の観客で活気づいている。

開催国イギリスが登場するとあって、会場は大盛況。試合前やセット間は、マイクを持った男性が観客を盛り上げたり、スクリーンに映った観客にスクリーン上に描かれた太鼓を叩かせたりと大忙し。タイムアウトや休憩になる度に大音量の音楽が流れ、ポンポンを持ったチアリーダーが踊る。観客を退屈させないようにという配慮なんだろうけれど、ウルサいったらありゃしない。特にどこのオリンピック会場でもしょっちゅう流れる、クイーンの「ウィ・ウィル・ロック・ユー」には、正直うんざり。できれば余興なしで試合に集中したかった。

この日の試合は、第一試合は日本が2-0、第二試合はロシアが3−2で勝利。第二試合はフルセットまで行く手に汗握る攻防だったが、第一試合は日本の圧勝で、Mは退屈してイライラ。日本の勝利は嬉しいけれど、もう少しイギリスチームにも頑張って欲しかったな。

My Olympic experience No.3 was volleyball preliminary games (Japan vs UK, Italy vs Russia) at Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre. The venue is just in front of the west exit but we had to walk from the east exit quite a while on the day, as the east side was exit only and west side was entrance only to avoid the chaos. We went to Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre several times for 100% Design (past entries: 2009 / 2010). The place is like a huge tasteless warehouse with concrete floors and a bit dark, but it was quite lively with lots of spectators.

Atmosphere inside was full of enthusiasm as British team competed on the first game. The guy with microphone was busy cheering up the audience by talking excitedly and let people who were showed on screen to beat illustrated drums appeared on the screen. Cheerleaders were dancing with the loud music during the timeouts or in-between sets. So much noise all through the games! I understand that they tried to do anything to entertain the people, but it was too much. Now I am sick of Queen‘s “We Will Rock You“, which has been played repeatedly in all Olympic venues…

This day, Japan beat UK 2-0 on the first game and Russia won with 3-2 to Italy on the second. The game of Russia and Italy was heated up for full-sets and was very exciting, but M got bored while watching the first game – I was happy that Japan won, but I wished UK played a bit better…

My First Olympic Experience: Judo @ ExCel

生まれて初めてのオリンピック観戦！国際コンベンションセンター・ExCelで行われた、柔道男子100kg級・女子78kg級の敗者復活戦・3位決定戦・決勝を見に行った。男子か女子か、最低でもどちらかは勝ち進むだろうと想定してチケットを買ったのだが、残念なことに穴井選手、緒方選手ともに2回戦敗退となってしまった。よって行く気が失せてしまったけれど、65ポンドのチケットが無駄になるし、色々なオリンピック会場を見るのも良いかなと思って出かけた。

場内は各国応援団で熱気ムンムン。特に女子78kg級に自国選手が出るイギリス応援団と、男女ともに出場予定のオランダ人応援団がウルサいのなんの。加えて、試合の合間に流される音楽のボリュームが大きく、耳栓を持っていけば良かったと思うほど。プラスチック製の椅子は堅く前席との距離が狭いので、背の高い男性などはちょっと窮屈そう。この日のゲストはロシアのプーチン大統領とお供のキャメロン首相とヘイグ外務大臣。プーチン大統領は、男子100kg級でロシア人選手が優勝したのでとても満足気。私はというと、日本人選手が出ていないので、大興奮とまではいかなかったけれど、楽しかった。行って良かった。

This is my first Olympic experience ever! I went to see Men’s -100kg and Women’s -78kg Judo competition (repechage & bronze and final) at ExCel. I bought the ticket, expecting that at least one Japanese athlete would go to the stage, but both lost at round 16… I am completely demoralized and didn’t want to go the games at all, but I didn’t want to waste my ticket and thought it would be interesting to see different Olympic venues.

There was full of excitement inside of the arena, with supporters from different countries. Especially large noise came from British with silver medalist Gemma Gibbons and Dutch in patriotic orange uniforms with two contestants. In addition, the music played in between the games was so loud, and I regretted that I didn’t bring ear plugs. The plastic chair was uncomfortable with little leg room. The special guest of the day was Russian President Putin who also practices Judo, accompanied by Prime Minister Cameron and Foreign Secretary Hague. Putin looked very proud that Russian won the gold medal. I couldn’t get very excited as no Japanese athletes competing, but it was fun anyway.

Futurism Exhibition @ Tate Modern

テート・モダンで6月12日〜9月20日まで開催中の、「FUTURISM」（未来派）展を観た。この展覧会は、1909年にフランス・フィガロ誌に掲載された、未来派創始者であるイタリア人詩人・フィリッポ・トンマーゾ・マリネッティ（Filippo Tommaso Marinetti）の「Manifesto（未来派設立宣言）」100周年を記念し、ローマのScuderie del Quirinale（スクデリエ・デル・クイリナーレ）、パリのMusée National d’Art Moderne / Centre Georges Pompidou（ポンピドゥー・センター）、そしてロンドンのテート・モダン美術館が共同企画したもの。

ローマでの展覧会をすんでのところで見逃した未来派ファンのMは、かなり期待していたが、見終わって少し物足りなさを感じた。産業革命以降機械化が進み、急速に社会情勢が変化していく中で起こったこのアート・ムーブメントがヨーロッパのアート界に与えた影響を探る、というコンセプトだが、肝心の未来派作品の展示が手薄なうえ、未来派とムッソリーニとの繋がりや、アーティストのファシズムに傾倒する政治的思想等、この運動と切っても切れない社会情勢の表現が薄い。フランスのキュビスム、ロシアのクボ＝フトゥリスム、イギリスのヴォーティシズム等、未来派に影響を受けた他国のアート・ムーブメントの展示も中途半端で、浅く広くの無難な展覧会になってしまっている。いつも充実した企画展を誇るテート・モダンの展覧会としては、残念な出来だ。

芸術界に影響のある３カ国の重要美術館共同企画の「鳴り物入り」の展覧会をけなすのは私たちだけかな？と思ってネットで批評をチェックしてみたら、ガーディアン紙のアート批評家も同じようなことを書いていたので、ちょっと安心。

私たちのお気に入りの作品は、イギリス人画家のデイヴィッド・ボンバーグ（David Bomberg）の「The Mud Bath」。大胆な色使いや構図が印象的な作品です。

We went to see the ‘FUTURISM‘ exhibition (Jun 12 – Sep 20) at Tate Modern. To mark the 100th anniversary of the ‘Manifesto’ of Futurism, published by Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in Paris daily Le Figaro in 1909, the Scuderie del Quirinale, in conjunction with the Musée National d’Art Moderne / Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and with the Tate Modern in London, planed a major exhibition about Futurism to celebrate the movement’s historical and international role over European art.

Futurism fan M missed to see the exhibition in Rome and had a high expectation about the show, but ended up being disappointed. The concept is to explore the Futurists’ new style that broke with old traditions and expressed the dynamism, energy and movement of their modern life, and its influence in Europe. However, the exhibition overall was shallow and superficial due to not focusing on Futurism only – the display of works of Futurism was weak, and the relationship with of the Futurism movement with Mussolini and its artists’ devotion to fascism were not well presented. The display of art movement influenced by Futurism in other countries, such as France’s Cubism, Russian Cubo-Futurism, and Vorticism in UK, were insufficient as a result of the focus of the show was dispersed into different art movement in Europe. It’s a shame as the show of Tate Modern, which has normally a good reputation to plan excellent exhibition made such a mediocre presentation of the exciting theme like Futurism.

We were worrying that we were the only one who are negative about Tate Modern’s exhibition, but found by google-ing that the Guardian art critique also criticized the show in the same way we felt – this made us feel better.

The work in the photo is our favorite piece in the show – “The Mud Bath” by David Bomberg. Its bold colors and composition really caught our eyes.
