Vrigin Media WiFi on London Underground

Virgin Media（ヴァージン・メディア）は、ロンドンオリンピックにあわせ、2012年6月から1月29日まで、ロンドン地下鉄での無料WiFiサービスを提供してきた。でもそのサービスも昨日で終了、今後もサービスを無料で使えるヴァージン・メディア（携帯電話・ブロードバンド）と携帯電話キャリアのボーダフォン、EE、T-モバイル、Orangeの顧客以外は、WiFi pass（1日£2 / 1週間£5 / １ヶ月£15）を購入しなければWiFiを使えなくなった。2月末までは期間限定で、2ヶ月分無料の3ヶ月パス（£15）を販売中。ちなみに、地下鉄利用者は引き続き、交通情報やロンドンのエンターテイメント、ニュースを提供するVirgin WiFiのポータルサイトは無料で利用できる。

ヴァージン・メディアは、昨年3月にロンドン地下鉄にWi-Fiを提供する契約を獲得。今週新たに11駅が既存のWiFiネットワークに加わり、3月末までにはロンドンの約120駅でWiFiが使用できるようになるという（WiFi接続駅リスト）。その他、WiFiプロバイダーのThe Cloudは、London Overground全56駅にWiFiコネクションを提供する契約を結び、またEyetease社提案の広告入りタクシー内無料高速WiFi サービスもロンドン交通局の認可を得た。WiFiモデルのタブレットユーザーや旅行者には嬉しいニュースだ。

うちはヴァージン・メディアとブロードバンド契約しているので、無料で地下鉄のWiFiを使えるけれど、改札口やエレベーター、プラットフォームでのみ接続可で動いている電車内では使えないので、あんまり重宝していない。電車で使えたら便利なのになあ。

Virgin Media had been offering free WiFi service since June 2012, coinciding with the London 2012 Olympic Games, till yesterday on January 29th. From today, no more free WiFi for everyone, except Virgin Media mobile and broadband customers as well as the the Vodafone, EE, T-Mobile and Orange customers who continue to enjoy free WiFi. Others have to purchase WiFi pass (£2@day / £5@week / £15@month) to use WiFi at Tube stations. During February, you can buy a 3-month special pass for £15 as a limited offer. However, Tube customers can still get free access to a Virgin WiFi portal, offering travel updates from Transport for London, information on London entertainment, and news.

Virgin Media won the contract to provide Wi-Fi to the London Underground in last March. This week new 11 stations were being connected to the Tube WiFi network, and the network is due to be expanded to around 120 stations by the end of March 2013 (list of the stations with WiFi).

Other good news for tourists and WiFi model tablet users: WiFi provider The Cloud has won another deal to provide Wi-Fi connections at all 56 London Overground stations; and the ad-supported free London taxi high-speed WiFi proposed by Eyetease was approved by Transport for London.

I am a Virgin Media broadband customer and can use the Tube WiFi service for free, but I don’t see it very useful – the service works only on ticket halls, escalators, platforms and on trains while at platforms, but not on trains on the move…

New V+ HD Set Top Box by Virgin Media

今日、ヴァージン・メディアから新しいセット・トップ・ボックス「V+HD Box (V+)」が届いた。今までは、2007年にヴァージン・メディアと改名する前のTelewest のセット・トップ・ボックス（写真下）を長年使っていたが、Mが11日から始まるワールドカップを前に、新しいテレビを買うことを決めたので、同時にセット・トップ・ボックスも新しいのに変えることにした。

V+HD Boxは、Personal Video Recorderという、テレビ放送などの映像をハードディスクに記録するビデオレコーダー。放送中の番組も、巻き戻しや一時停止ができる。また、一つの番組を観てる間に、他の番組も同時に2つまで録画することができ、最大80時間分もの番組を収録可能。録画操作も簡単で、画面に映し出されたテレビガイドの中から好きな番組を選び、「record（録画）」を押すだけ。「Series Link」と呼ばれるサービスを使うと、お気に入りの番組全話を毎回自動的に録画できる。高解像度、高画質、高精細のHigh Definition（ハイ・デフィニション）に対応、HDMIを通じてオンデマンドのコンテンツもサポートしている。

不満なのは、TV XLパッケージの新規契約者には無料のV+HD Boxが、既存のTV XL契約者は、古いボックスを引き続き月額レンタル£5.50でキープする人以外は、£75を支払わないといけないこと。もう何年もヴァージン・メディアも使っていて、契約内容もテレビもインターネット回線も最高額のものなのに。それにiPlayer（BBCの無料見逃し視聴サービスで、テレビでもオンラインでも見られる）の起動が早くなるという触れ込みなのに、相変わらず遅い。

ちなみに最近、ヴァージン・メディアは、敵対していたBritish Sky Broadcasting Group（BSkyB）に1億6000万ポンドで買収されることになったそうだ。サービスが向上すればいいんだけれど、ますます寡占化が進むのでは。

We received a new set-top box “V+HD Box (V+)” from Virgin Media today. We had been using an old set-top box from Telewest (company was rebranded as Virgin Media in 2007) for years, but M wants to buy a new TV before the World Cup South Africa, and we decided to change the set-top box as well.

V+HD Box is a Personal Video Recorder, using a hard-disk to record up to 80 hours of TV shows. The box let you pause and rewind live TV. While watching a program, you can record up to two other channels at the same time. It is easy to record – just select a programme from the on-screen TV guide and press ‘record’. With ‘Series Link’ service, you can record every episode of your favorite series automatically. The box also supports HD programming and on-demand content via HDMI.

What I don’t like is that we, as a existing customer , must pay “set-up fees” for £75 for the set-up box which is available free of charge for new customer with XL TV package, unless we keep our existing set-top box in another room for £5.50 a month. We have been a loyal customer for years, with most expensive package for TV and broad band! Also a start-up of BBC iPlayer is supposed to be faster, but it seems as dead slow as before.

Recently it is reported that Virgin Media is to be bought by its archenemy BSkyB for £160 million pounds. I hope the service will be better and Sky won’t abuse its monopolizing power…

Zumba Fitness Class @ Virgin Active

最近イギリスで流行中のZumba（ズンバ）。ズンバは、サルサやメレンゲ、マンボ、クンビア、レゲトン、カリプソ、ソカ、サンバ、チャチャ等のラテンアメリカ系音楽に、ラテンダンスをベースにヒップホップ等の要素も取り入れ、音楽とダンス、エクササイズを融合させた、エアロビック・フィットネスプログラム。コロンビア出身で、マイアミをベースに活躍するダンサー／フィットネス・インストラクターであるBeto Perez（ベト・ペレス）が考案、アメリカでブームを巻き起こし、世界に広がった。

私が行っているジム、Virgin Active（ヴァージン・アトランティック航空を擁するイギリスのヴァージン・グループがオーナーのスポーツクラブ。過去のエントリー「ヴァージン・メディア」参照）にも、今年1月からクラスが始まったので、何回か行ってみた。人気があるだけあって、クラスは人で溢れていて、派手に動いたり、ステップを間違えたりすると前後左右の人にぶつかりそうになる。20代とおぼしき若い女性が多いけれど、男性や30〜40代女性もちらほら。クラスは45分または1時間（クラスによって違う）で、ラテンの明るく情熱的な音楽にのって、ほとんど休みなく踊りまくる。正統派のラテンダンスと違ってパートナーも要らないし、やさしいステップが多く、間違ってもいいからとにかく体を動かして、楽しくエクササイズするというのが売り物。クラスの最後の方は、もうヘトヘトで、足ももつれそうになるが、気分は爽快。DVDとかも売ってるみたいだけれど、クラスで皆と一緒に踊って汗を流すのが楽しい。これにはまる人も多く、ズンバのクラスやイベントを渡り歩く人たちもいるそう。インストラクターによってクラスの質も違うので、色々なクラスやスポーツクラブを渡り歩いて、自分のお気に入りのクラスを探すのがいいかも。ちなみに、他のスポーツクラブより月会費は少し高いけれど、ヴァージン・アクティブのメンバーになると、全国約70あるクラブをどこでも利用できる。

Zumba is a recent fitness sensation in UK. Created by Miami-based Columbian dancer and fitness trainer Beto Perez, Zumba is an aerobic fitness program, which combines steps from a variety of Latin dance and uses corresponding Latin music such as salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, calypso, soca, samba, mambo, and cha cha, as well as hip hop and other music. Zumba is the fastest growing fitness based dance craze in the USA, and now its popularity has been spreading the to the other parts of the world.

I have a membership of Virgin Active health club, a part of Richard Branson‘s Virgin Group (see also my past entry about Virgin Media), and I went to Zumba class few times, as the club now has a Zumba class since January this year. It was a quite popular class with lots of people excitedly waiting in the studio – there was no space for an overzealous movement and an wrong step, without hitting someone around you. Participants were mainly young women in 20s, but some older people and few men as well. The class lasts usually 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the class, and you just dance fanatically all the way through with a passionate Latin soundtrack, with very little break. The concept of Zumba is just to have fun with easy-to-learn steps – don’t worry about a mistake. Also you don’t need to look for a partner, like traditional Latin dance, nor to dance with a same sex partner. At the end of the class, I was so exhausted and unable to make a light step, but I felt so good afterwards. DVD is also available, but it is more fun to dance and sweat together with a bubbly instructor and others in the class. Some are addicted to Zumba, and turn up any classes and events across the city. The quality of a class depends on a instructor, so it is better to try out some classes to look for your favorite instructor. If you become a member of Virgin Active, you can use over 70 Virgin Active clubs across the country – so it is worth its little pricier monthly membership fee.

New Virgin Media ‘Broadband XXL’ installed

昨日、ヴァージン・メディア（Virgin Media）のテクニシャンが来て、今までの「Broadband XL」プランから「Broadband XXL」にアップグレードしてもらった。モデムは、それまでの白のプラスチックのモデムと比べ、スタイリッシュな、光沢のあるブラック。回線スピードは今までの最大20mbpsから最大50mbpsにアップした。

ヴァージン・メディアは、ヴァージン・アトランティック航空を起したリチャード・ブランソン率いるヴァージン・グループ（Virgin Group）傘下にある会社で、ケーブルテレビ、ブロードバンド・インターネット接続、電話、携帯電話事業を行っている。イギリスにおけるブロードバンド・インターネット接続プロバイダー最大手で、28％のシェアを占める（2006年調べ）。ちなみに第二位はBTグループで23％。18ヶ月の回線改良工事の後、ヴァージン・メディアはそのネットワーク提供範囲を3倍に引き上げることに成功、この高速光ファイバー回線を最大1200万のイギリス家庭に提供することが可能になった。現在は「Broadband XXL」プランで月額£52.00だが、9月1日から£35.00ポンドに価格が引き下げられるそうだ。

最大50mbpsというスピードは現在、イギリスのブロードバンド・プロバイダーの中で最速。100mbps、1Gbpsが最大速度の、世界1、2を争う高速回線を持つ日本と比べると、大したことはないんだろうけれど、ここイギリスにとっては画期的な出来事なのだ。ちなみに、ITIFの2008年のブロードバンドランキングでは、イギリスは世界第13位（日本は、韓国に次いで第2位）。平均ダウンロード速度は、一位の日本の63.6mbpsに比べ、2.6mbpsだったから、それに比べたら、大きな一歩じゃないか。

でもこの新しい50mbps回線、特段速くなった感じはなく、むしろ少し遅くなってる感じ。どういうこと？？

Yesterday Virgin Media technician came to our apartment, and set up a new modem to upgrade the plan from ‘Broadband XL‘ to ‘Broadband XXL‘. The internet speed went up from up to 20mbps to up to 50mbps. The glossy black modem is stylish and more compact than the old boring white plastic one.

Virgin Media is a provider for home telephone, cable television, broadband and mobile services to the UK, and a part of Virgin Group founded by British business tycoon Sir Richard Branson. Virgin Media is the top UK broadband provider, and it took 28% share of the UK market in 2006, and the second BT (British Telecommunication) had 23%. After 18 months of upgrades, Virgin Media has now tripled its network capacity and is able to offer a 50Mb broadband package to 12 million homes across the UK. Now ’Broadband XXL’ plan costs £52.00, but as of September 1st, Virgin Media will slash the price to £35.00.

The 50Mb service is currently the fastest commercially available broadband connection on the UK market. It may sound a big deal in compare to South Korea and Japan, the top two countries on ITIF 2008 Broadband Ranking, where the internet speed up to 100mbps or even up to 1Gbps are available. But it is a great improvement for UK, which is the 13th on the world ranking, and the average download speed in Mbps was only 2.6 in 2008,in compare to the fastest Japan of 63.6.

But I feel like the speed of this new service is not faster but rather slower – what is going on?!
