‘The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team’ Graffiti by Pure Evil @ Broadway Market

ハックニーのBroadway Market（ブロードウェイ・マーケット）の街角で、Pure Evilが描いた「The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team（ハックニー略奪チームの新しいロゴ）」を見つけた。昨年ロンドンで起こった暴動とオリンピックがモチーフのこの作品は、Pure Evilいわく、オリンピックはVIPたちがエンジョイできるパーティのようなもので、自分たちは蚊帳の外でお呼びじゃないという、ハックニー住民の失望感を表しているという。

その気持ちは分からなくはない。オリンピックのチケットは高額だし、ロンドンの中心街やオリンピック会場は五輪で盛り上がってるけれども、貧困層の住むイーストロンドンを含むその他のエリアは別世界。オリンピックのロゴも国旗も滅多に見かけなかったし、パブでもオリンピック中継はあまりやっておらず、街が分断されているかのように感じたのは本当だ。

私個人の感想を言わせてもらえば、オリンピックは思った以上に面白かった。こんなに短期集中的にスポーツを見たことは人生初めてだし、世界的イベントがロンドンで行われた時にここにいられて実際観戦できて、本当に良かったと思う。ただし、BBCのオリンピック中継には少し物申したい。The Telegraph紙でも伝えているように、ともかくイギリス人選手のことばっかりで、ホスト国だと言うのにイギリス人選手が出ていない試合やマイナーなスポーツはほとんど無視、その日行われた全試合の結果を伝えるダイジェストさえなし。私たちはケーブルテレビに加入しているので、BBCの五輪特別チャンネルでほとんどの試合を生で見れたのだが、同じ時間に試合が重なると、当然のようにイギリス人やヨーロッパ人の選手が出る試合が優先される。柔道や卓球など、ワクワクして試合が始まるのを待っていたのに、全然違う国の選手の試合を見せられて失望したことも何度か。仕方ないことだが、せめてスクリーンを分割するとか小さな囲みを入れるとかして、他の試合も見せて欲しかった。ケーブルテレビに加入していない友人などは、現地にいるにも関わらず、早々にテレビ観戦は諦めてネットのニュースで結果をチェックしていたそう。日本のテレビも日本人のことばかりだけれど、ロンドンは何と言ってもホストシティ、しかも住民の半数が外国生まれで国際都市を謳っている割に、この有様。外国人だって、TV license（受信料）払ってるのに。。。オリンピック開始前には文句ばっかり言って冷めてたイギリス人が、こんなに熱狂的で愛国心満々になるなんて、思いもしなかった。

Pure Evil explained the message behind it is a disenfranchisement that people in Hackney felt about the Olympics, which they thought it had been a bit of a party for the VIPs and they hadn’t been invited and included.

It may be a bit true. The Olympic tickets were quite expensive, and I felt the Olympic atmosphere around the Game venues and downtown London, but it seemed nothing was happening in some areas including deprived neighborhood in East London – very few olympic symbols or national flags, and little olympic viewing at a local pub. I felt like the city was divided somehow.

Overall I really enjoyed the Olympic myself. I am glad that I was here when this great event took place in London. But I and my non-British friends had a little problem with BBC Olympic coverage. They constantly and repeatedly talked about British athletes, but almost no coverage for the non-popular games that British athletes were not expected for medals (The Telegraph). We have a cable TV, showing most of the games live, but if multiple games of the same sport taking place at the same time, the coverage gave a priority to British and European athletes. Of course they should mainly cover British olympians, as BBC is the British TV station, but they didn’t even do few minutes of digest for all the games of the day. UK is the host country and I believe they have some responsibility to broadcast wide variety of the games not only for British but also for both foreign visitors and residents. I was here in front of the TV at home many times, but I sometimes got disappointed by watching the game I did care less. They could split the screen or could insert a small screen at the corner of main screen to show other games as well! Situation for some of my friends who don’t have cable TV was even worse – they just gave up watching TV and checked internet for a result and news. I thought London is the cosmopolitan city that half of the residents are foreign-born… We foreigners also pay for TV license! British people were rather unenthsiastic before the Olympic started, but I was surprised that they turned to be very fanatic and patriotic at the end (The Time blog).

チャイナタウンで見つけたこの中国人のオジサンは、何とこの人力車で中国からロンドンにやってきたそう（BBCニュース）。北京オリンピックを見て感銘を受け、次の開催地であるロンドンを目指すことを決意、2020年5月23日に中国の自宅を出発してから、16カ国1764市を通る、14万キロ以上の道程をやってきた。彼曰く、平和と環境保護というメッセージを世界に伝え続けたいと、次は2016年オリンピック開催地であるリオデジャネイロに向かう予定だそう。こんな人力車でよく頑張った。ご苦労様！

On the main street of China Town, I happened to see this Chinese man who traveled from China to London with his rickshaw (BBC news). He was inspired to travel to the next host city for the Games, while he saw the Olympic in Beijing, and he has travelled more than 90,000km through 16 countries and 1,764 cities since he left his home in China on May 23, 2010. He says he wants to carry on spreading his message of peace and environmental protection, and next he is going to head to Brazil for Rio 2016. Great job, and good luck to you!

Ai Weiwei: Sunflower Seeds @ Tate Modern

テート・モダンのユニリーバ・シリーズ（The Unilever Series）の第11回作品が、中国人コンセプチュアル・アーティストで文化評論家・社会評論家でもある、艾未未 （アイ・ウェイウェイ）の「Sunflower Seeds（ヒマワリの種）」が、テート・モダンで展示中だ（10月12日〜翌5月2日。昨年の作品についてはここを参照）。会場であるTurbine Hall（タービン・ホール）の床一面に、約10cm程の厚みで敷き詰められた、1億個！ものポーセリン（磁器）製のヒマワリの種は、1,600人以上の景徳鎮の職人たちが、2年がかりで手作りした。手に取って見てみると本物そっくり。よく出来ている。来場者はそれぞれ、歩き回ったり、座ったり、手に取って感触を確かめたり、歩く度にたてるサクッサクッという繊細な音を楽しんでいる。最初は上を歩いたりすると、割れたり壊れたりしそうで恐る恐るだったけれど、やっぱり磁器製だけあって丈夫だ。

アイ・ウェイウェイにとって、ヒマワリの種は毛沢東の大躍進政策が引き起こした大規模な飢餓の最中、唯一気軽に口に出来た食べ物。また文化大革命の頃のプロパガンダでは、毛沢東が太陽、大衆は太陽を追って動くひまわりとして描かれた、中国人民の象徴でもある。そして少しずつ違う手作りの種は、大量生産ではない、個性を持った人間一人一人を表している。

アイ・ウェイウェイは、北京オリンピックの主会場である北京国家体育場「鳥の巣」の建設にあたり、芸術顧問として、設計者のヘルツォーク&ド・ムーロンと共同制作を行ったが、その後オリンピックは政治的プロパガンダに過ぎず失望したとして、オリンピック関係から手を引いたり、四川大地震の犠牲者の実態調査を行ってブログに書いたり（その後ブログは削除された）と、政治的活動・発言も積極的に行っている。なぜか日本版Wikipediaには書いていないのだが、英語版では地震の件で仲間のために証言をしようとした際、警察に暴行を受け、その後、それが原因だと思われる脳内出血の緊急手術をドイツで受けたそうだ。また、フィナンシャル・タイムズ紙によると、アイ・ウェイウェイを追放するため、彼のインターネットのアカウントがサイバー攻撃を受けてハッキングされたり、銀行口座は当局によって犯罪行為の疑いありとして調査を受けていると言う。人権活動家の劉暁波氏のノーベル平和賞受賞が中国政府のお怒りを買ったとのニュースもまだ冷めやらない昨今、テート・モダンでの展示によって、彼や他の活動家たちが、さらに当局から睨まれたりしませんように。

＊今日のBBCニュースによると、来場者との接触により粉塵が予想外にたち、長期間吸入する事で健康を害する恐れがあるため、作品の上を歩く事が禁止されることになったそうです。

A Chinese conceptual artist and an outspoken cultural and social commentator, Ai Weiwei‘s “Sunflower Seeds” is selected for the eleventh commission in the Unilever Series at Tate Modern (October 12 –  May 2,  2011. Check here for last year’s exhibition). The Turbine Hall where hosts the show is covered by 100 million individually handmade porcelain sunflower seeds by over 1,600 craftsmen in Jingdezhen taking about two years, about 10cm deep. When I picked some of them up and saw up-close, these looked incredibly realistic. Visitors enjoyed walking and sitting on the top, touching them, and listening the delicate sounds the the seeds make with every step. At the beginning, I was scared to walk on the top of them that look fragile, but the porcelain seeds are quite strong and don’t break easily.

For Ai Weiwei, Sunflower seeds are almost the only food to eat that even in the Mao Zedong‘s notorious social-political programs, such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Also in the propaganda during the Cultural Revolution, Chairman Mao was represented as the Sun with the Chinese people as sunflowers turning their faces toward him. The handmade sunflower seeds are metaphors for people who are all unique and different.

Ai Weiwei is also known with his bold political comments and activities which often cause trouble with the Chinese authority. He was the artistic consultant for design, collaborating with the Herzog & de Meuron, for the “Bird’s Nest” Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but he later distanced himself from the project, because he thought that Olympics were just political propaganda and he was disappointed. He also involved in an investigation into student casualties in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, that aimed to compile a list of students killed in the earthquake, and wrote in his blog which was later shut down. He was beaten by the police for trying to testify for a fellow investigator of the shoddy construction and student casualties in the earthquake, and later had an emergency brain surgery in Germany for cerebral hemorrhage which is believed to be linked to the police attack. According to the Financial Times, in an attempt to force Ai to leave the country, two of his accounts had been hacked; his bank accounts were investigated by state security agents who claimed he was under investigation for “unspecified suspected crimes”. Just after this year’s Nobel peace prize was awarded to Chinese human right activist Liu Xiaobo and this caused an outrage of Chinese government, I really hope that Ai’s Tate exhibition wouldn’t let China put more pressure on him or other fellow activists.

* According to today’s BBC news, visitors have been banned from walking on the top of seeds, due to a greater than expected level of dust created by the interaction with visitors, which could be damaging to health following repeated inhalation over a long period of time.

最近、ICAで、ロンドンを舞台にした2つの映画を観た。一つ目はイタリアン・ホラー／スプラッター映画（ジャッロ）の巨匠、ルーチョ・フルチ監督の「A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin（Una Lucertola con la Pelle di Donna／幻想殺人、1971年）」。ロンドンの上流階級の政治家の娘、キャロル・ハモンドは、サイコセラピストに、毎夜、隣に住む奔放な生活を送る美女との情事に溺れる悪夢を見てしまうことを相談している。ある日、夢でキャロルはその情事の相手を殺してしまうが、現実でも彼女が夢見た通りの殺人が起こった。彼女は本当に殺人を犯したのか、それとも不貞を働く夫にはめられたのか？ヒッピー・ムーブメントやカウンターカルチャーが花開いた1960年代のロンドンを舞台に、謎は深まっていく。斬新で、幻想的なフィルミングもいいけれど、裸満載で妙にエロティックなのは、あの時代特有なものなのか、それともイタリアっぽいのか？サスペンス映画としての評価はもとより、イタリア人から見た、ステレオタイプ的なイギリス観が面白い。豪奢なロンドンのマンションや田舎の広大なお屋敷など上流階級の生活と、その両極端にあって、いつもラリっていて怪しいヒッピーたち。警察官以外は普通の人は出てこない。

もう一つは「She, a Chinese（彼女、中国人）」。中国映画かと思いきや、中国人女性で作家のXiaolu Guo（郭小櫓）が監督、UK Film Council（イギリス映画振興のための政府機関）やFilm 4（チャンネル4系の映画専門局）などが制作した、イギリス／ドイツ／フランス合作映画なのだが、私的には近年見た中で最悪の映画だった。中国の片田舎で退屈な生活を送っていた女の子メイが、目的も希望もなく故郷を飛び出し、その都度手近にいる男にしなだれかかって、彼らに寄生しながら、したたかに生きていくというストーリー。まずは地方の大都市・重慶、そして色々あってロンドンにたどり着いた後、定年退職したイギリス人の老人と結婚。でもその生活からもすぐに逃げ出し、近所で小さなインド料理店をやっているムスリム系インド人の家に転がり込むが、最後には妊娠、男にも捨てられるという、脳みその軽くてナイーブな若い女の話。彼女に関わる男性たちも、彼女を性的対象として見るだけで、一様に冷酷でひどい奴ばかり。まあ、それに値する女なのだけど。人物描写も背景描写も、全てにおいて薄っぺらで、彼女の行動に意味はなく、ただ感情の赴くままに生きている。しかも、情夫が貯めていたお金でロンドンに団体旅行で来て、そこから逃げ出し、イギリスに住み着くという設定もかなり怪しい。彼女のように田舎から出てきて売春婦をしていた女性が、厳格な中国において、イギリスビザやパスポートを取れるのか？？そんなに簡単なら、生命のリスクを冒してマフィアに大金を払い、密入国しなくてはならない不法移民たちがいるのは何故か。第62回ロカルノ映画祭の金豹賞を受賞したとのことだが、か細くて可愛い東洋人が、人生を迷いながらも強く生きていくという、アジア人好きの西洋人男性にウケそう。しかも映画には、彼女の顔のクローズアップと可愛い仕草、そしてセックスシーンで溢れている。異文化好きのTime Out誌は4つ星評価だけれど、私はTimes紙の1つ星に1票！

ともあれ、最初に結婚した、定年退職したイギリス人の老人の退屈な典型的中流階級のイギリス生活、そんな夫との退屈な生活が嫌で転がり込んだ、ムスリム系インド人の住む、移民の多いエリアのイーストエンドと、「幻想殺人」の舞台とはまた違ったロンドンが垣間見れる。英語もろくに喋れない彼女の限られた生活範囲内の、現代ロンドンのごく一部の狭い世界ではあるけれど。

Recently I saw two movies filmed in London at ICA. The first one is “A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin (Una Lucertola con la Pelle di Donna, 1971)”, directed by Lucio Fulci, known for his splatter and Italian giallo movies. The film follows the daughter of a prominent British politician, Carol Hammond (Florinda Bolkan), who experiences a series of recurring ‘nightmares’ in which she has an affair with a bisexual nympho who lives downstairs and conducts all-night LSD orgies. In the dream she kills her neighbor. Did she actually commit the murder she dreamt about, or is she being framed by her unfaithful husband? The murder mystery takes place in swinging late-1960’s London. Its innovative and surreal filming is quite original and intriguing. The movie is full of nudity and eroticism – is it of the time when hippie and counter culture was flourished, or is it an Italian thing? Anyway, more than anything, it is interesting to see stereotypical London and British people through Italian eyes – you can see two extremes of UK society at the period; upper class lifestyle with gorgeous apartment in London and vast estate in the countryside and drug-ridden grungy hippie culture.

Another one is “She, a Chinese” – I thought the movie is from China, but it is a UK/Germany/France movie, written and directed by Chinese woman Xiaolu Guo and produced by UK Film Council and Film 4. I must say that it is one of the worst movie I have seen in years. This is the story of Mei, a young village woman who leads a boring life in rural China. Unfulfilled, she leaves for the big city Chongqing, and then heads out for London. She marries to a retired British math teacher, but soon gets frustrated, and leaves him for a younger Muslim Indian who has an takeaway curry shop nearby. At the end, she gets pregnant and is dumped by him. Mei is young and naive and has no goal in her life. What she cares is a man and she always leans on any man around her to cling to for living and fulfillment. Also men whom she has a relationship with are all worst kind who just see her as a sex object – maybe she deserves to that kind of men anyway. The story is quite shallow and offers me nothing but nuisance. At the end, I am like, “so what?!” Some details are unrealistic as well – how come the girl like Mei, a prostitute, can join a sightseeing tour which are exclusively for rich Chinese and people connect to the leading Communist party, getting British visa and Chinese passport so easily (Chinese government has a strict policy for issuing a passport and doesn’t give it to everyone), and just run away from the tour and decides to live in UK? If it’s so easy, no one would pay a lot of money to Snakehead, risking their life to smuggle themselves into UK in a hidden space in a truck or a small compartment of a cargo ship for months. This movie won the Golden Leopard award at Locarno International Film Festival – I understand that some Western men love the movie like “She, a Chinese,” a story of cute oriental girl who is lost in her life but struggling to find a meaning of life, or some kind of craps. This movie is all about her – her face, her body, and her sex scenes – a perfect movie for Asiaphilia men. Ethnic-loving Time Out gave this movie 4 stars, but I give two thumbs up for the Timess’ 1 star review!

Anyways, you can see different sides of London portrayed in “She, a Chinese,” from “A Lizard In a Woman’s Skin” – a typical life of British middle class retiree, and London’s East End where many south-Asian immigrants live – though it is only a small part of modern London as Mei, who barely speaks English, stays in very restricted area and never goes out from the small bubble.

Wagamama @ N1 Islington, Angel

今日はエンジェルで用事があったので、N1ショッピングセンターにあるWagamamaでランチをした。Wagamamaは、中華の有名店・Hakkasan（ハッカサン）やYauatcha（ユアッチャ）、そしてブログでも書いたPrinciやCha Cha Moonを手がけたカリスマレストラン仕掛人・Alan Yau（アラン・ヤウ）氏が1992年に創業した、「なんちゃって」ジャパニーズ・チェーン（Wagamamaのホームページでは、「pan-Asian（アジア料理）」とあるけれど）。味は今イチなんだけれども、学食のように長いテーブルが並ぶシンプルでモダンなインテリアにスタイリッシュなグラフィック、そして「ヘルシー」な「日本食」（イギリスでは、日本食＝健康的と思われている）が気軽に食べられるというので人気に火がつき、今ではイギリスのみならず、ヨーロッパやアメリカ、中東にも進出している。

店の名前は日本語で、メニューにはラーメンやうどん、そば、やきそば、カレーライス、餃子等が並んでいるけれども、日本食もどきで似非日本食。いわゆる「日本の味」を期待してはいけない。香港系中国人経営だけあって、中華料理の影響が味付けや材料等に垣間見える。例えば今日Mが注文したWagamamaラーメン（下の写真、£7.95）。汁はラーメンとうどんつゆを混ぜたような不思議な味で、麺はふにゃふにゃ。その上にグリルチキン、マトウダイ、エビ、かまぼこ、厚揚げ、マッシュルーム、わかめ、青菜、メンマなどが何でもあり状態でのっている。Mはまあまあいけるよ、とか言っていたけれど、私的には自分で作ったインスタントラーメンの方がよっぽど美味しいと思う。私の野菜カツカレー（£7.65）は、Sweet Potato（日本のサツマイモと似ているが、もう少しべちゃっとしている）、なす、バターナット・スクァッシュ（カボチャの一種）をカラッと揚げたカツとサラダはなかなか美味しいけれど、肝心のカレーはご飯の量に比べて少なく、味も薄くて、コクもうまみもない。かろうじてカレーと呼べる代物だ。また日本ではB級グルメのこれらのメニューも、Wagamamaでは日本円で1000円を優に超える。この味にこの値段?!と思ってしまうので滅多に来ないのだが、近くにこれと言ったレストランやカフェがない時に、たまに魔が差して行ってしまうのだ。

We had lunch at Wagamama in N1 Shopping Centre, as we were around Angel station . Wagamama is a “pan-Asian” restaurant chain (according to its website), founded in 1992 by charismatic Hong Kong-born restauranteur Alan Yau, who also created the prestigious Chinese restaurants Hakkasan and Yauatcha, as well as more casual Princi and Cha Cha Moon I wrote in this blog before. Their food, for my eyes, is below average, but with their concept to offer “healthy” “Japanese” food with affordable price, as well as its simple and modern interir with long tables and cool graphics, Wagamama has gained popularity across UK and now expands the chain to Europe, USA, and middle eastern countries.

The name is in Japanese (means “selfish”), and Japanese fast foods and noodles such as ramen, udon, yakisoba (fried noodle), Japanese curry, and gyoza dumplings are on their menu, but Wagamama is not really a “Japanese” restaurant or quite far from it – so please don’t believe what you eat there is what you eat in Japan. I can see some Chinese influence on their ingredients and cooking. Wagamama ramen M ordered (in the photo below £7.95), with mishmash, like grilled chicken, smooth dory, prawn, kamaboko, fried tofu, mushrooms, wakame and seasonal greens, menma and spring onions, on the top of mushy noodles and bland and flavorless broth. It didn’t seem to bother M, but I prefer to buy an instant noodle from Japanese grocery store for less than £1 and cook it myself. Deep fried Vegetable (sweet potato, aubergine and butternut squash) and side salad on my yasai (vegetable) katsu curry is fine, but curry doesn’t have much taste and too little for the amount of rice – I tasted mainly rice but not curry much. Their food is Japanese fast food and equivalent to a hamburger or fish & chips and quite reasonable, but in somehow, Wagamama manages to make the dish a bit more posh. I rarely go to Wagamama because for me the price doesn’t match to the taste. However, if there is nothing decent nearby, and I craze for something Japanese-ish, I just give myself in to Wagamama…
