Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan @ Tate Modern

イタリア人コンセプチュアル・アーティスト、アリギエロ・ボエッティの回顧展「Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan」が、テート・モダンで5月27日まで開催されている。ボエッティは、1960年代後半に既成の芸術に反抗し、工業素材や石や木など単純素材を用いた、イタリアの前衛的美術運動・アルテ・ポーヴェラ（「貧しい芸術」）の一員として活躍。この展覧会が、テート・モダンで開催される、アルテ・ポーヴェラ系アーティストの初の個展となる。

トリノ出身のボエッティは、フィアットを中心とする自動車産業の中心であるトリノと関連する工業用素材を使用、後に切手やボールペン、雑誌の表紙などを使って作品を創っている。この展覧会では、建築素材を使用した建造物、ボールペンを使ったドローイング、飛行機を描いた水彩画、世界の河川のリスト、アフガン人の手で作られた、数値システムをベースにしたパターンが織り込まれたキリム、そして彼の代表作である、各国の上に国旗の織りを入れた世界地図シリーズ「Mappa」等、様々な作品を展示している。ボエッティは遠方の地に興味を持ち、エチオピア、グアテマラ、アフガニスタンといった国を旅した。1971年にカブールを訪れた後、71〜79年の間、アートプロジェクトとしてカブールでホテルを設立、そこで「Mappa」等カラフルで大きな刺繍作品を創っていた。また秘儀や神秘的なものへの関心や、60年代〜70年代のイタリアの日常や政治に呼応した作品など、その作風はバラエティに富んでいる。

ボエッティのことは全く知らずに観に行ったのだが、派手派手しさはないものの、彼の几帳面さ、細部へのこだわりが伺える展覧会で、中々面白かった。

Italian conceptual artist, Alighiero E Boetti‘s retrospective, “Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan” is currently running at Tate Modern until May 27th. Boetti is a key member of Arte Povera group of young Italian artists in the late 1960s, which was working in radically new ways using simple materials. This is the first solo show by an Arte Povera artist at Tate Modern.

Turin-born Boetti used industrial materials associated with Turin, Italy’s automotive manufacturer centre, and later made works using postage stamps, ballpoint pens, and magazine covers. His work in the exhibition includes constructions made with building materials, biro drawings, watercolour paintings of aeroplanes, lists of rivers,and woven kilims made by Afghans with patterns based on numeric systems, as well as a series of embroidered world maps in which each country features the design of its national flag, Mappa, which is his most renown work. Boetti was interested in faraway places and made a trip to places such as Ethiopia, Guatemala and Afghanistan. After travelled to Kabul in 1971, he set up a hotel in Kabul between 1971 – 79 as an art project and created large colourful embroideries such as Mappa. He was also fascinated by esoteric and mystical thought, and was responsive to everyday conditions in Italy and to its politics in the 60s-70s. 

I’ve never heard of Boetti before I saw this exhibition. Though  Boetti’s work is not attention-grabbing or glitzy, but I quite enjoyed the show and his work with his attention to details and methodical approach.

Great British Railways: Royal Mail World’s First “Intelligent” Stamps

今年8月19日に発行された、ロイヤル・メールの記念切手シリーズの「Great British Railways」。British Rail（イギリス国鉄）が製造した最後の標準クラス9F蒸気機関車「Evening Star」の製造終了50周年を記念して発行された。イギリスの蒸気機関車を取り上げた、初めての記念切手となる。

These are Royal Mail’s special stamps “Great British Railways” issued in August 19, celebrating the 50th anniversary of British Rail’s last steam locomotive, the 9F Class ‘Evening Star’. This is the first in a series of special stamp issues commemorating classic British locomotives.

一見したら普通の切手だけれど、これはロイヤル・メールいわく、世界初の「インテリジェント」切手なのだそうだ（Royal Mail プレスリリース）。iPhoneまたはAndroidを搭載したスマートフォンを通して切手を見ることで、画像認識技術が作動し、ロイヤル・メールが制作したオンライン専用コンテンツが立ち上がるという、切手において世界初のシステムで、9月3日よりスタートした。JunaioというアプリをインストールしたスマートフォンでGreat British Railways切手を見ると、1936年に郵便局によって作られたドキュメンタリーで有名になったW・H・オーデンの詩「The Night Mail」を、ドクター・フー出演俳優のBernard Cribbins（バーナード・クリビンス）が読み上げる短編映画が再生される。この技術は、ロイヤル・メールが将来発行する記念切手のいくつかにも採用される予定だそうだ。

These stamps look just ordinary stamps, but Royal Mail claims these are the world’s first “intelligent” stamps (Royal Mail release). Launched on September 3, it is the first in the world to work with image recognition technology, which, when activated by a smartphone on the iPhone or Android platforms, will launch exclusive online content created by Royal Mail. Viewing the Great British Railways stamp,via the Junaio app installed smartphone, will direct you to a short film showing Doctor Who actor Bernard Cribbins reading Auden‘s famous poem “The Night Mail“, first made famous in The Post Office’s own film from 1936. Royal Mail will use the technology available on selected future special stamps.

Brand New Royal Mail stamps “The Fire & Rescue Service” issue

2009年9月1日発行されたばかりのRoyal Mail記念切手セット「The Fire & Rescue Service（消防・救助活動）」。90ペンス、81ペンス、62ペンス、56ペンス、54ペンス、1st Class（39ペンス）の6枚セットで、それぞれ消火活動、緊急救助、化学火災、洪水救助、捜索・救助、火災安全をテーマにしたデザインだ。イギリスの記念切手に多い正方形に近い形で、サイズは37mm x 35mm（なんで正方形じゃない？）。ところで、イギリスの切手の特徴は、国名表記がなく、エリザベス女王の横顔のシルエットが右肩にデザインされていること。イギリスは世界で最初の郵便制度を導入した国で、1840年に世界初の切手を発行した。当時、他の国には切手がなかったので、国名表記は必要なかった。その後1964年に、郵便ルール統括国際組織である万国郵便連合（UPU）が、「１９６６年以降発行の切手には国、地域名をローマ字で表記すること」という ルールを採択したけれど、合意の上、イギリスは国名を切手に表記しなくて良い唯一の国とされている。

オタクっぽく聞こえるからあんまり人には言わないんだけれど、実は切手を集めるのが好き。といってもマニアックに特定の時代、テーマ、または国の切手を集めているわけではなく、ぱっと見て気に入ったものを選ぶ。50年代後半から60年代、または現代のシンプル＆モダンなデザインが好きで、国であればドイツやオランダが多い。切手は、ありとあらゆるテーマを、絵画、写真、イラスト等を使って、小さいサイズの中にうまくおさめている。また国毎、時代毎にデザインが違っていて、面白い。いかにもデザイナーがデザインしているなと分かる完成度の高い切手なんかは、アートの域に達してると思う。

I got Royal Mail new special stamp sheets “The Fire & Rescue Service“,  issued on September 1, 2009. It is a set of 6 stamps (90p, 81p, 62p, 56p, 54p, and 1st Class/39p）, with designs of fire safety, search and rescue, flood rescue, chemical fire, emergency rescue, and firefighting. As many royal Mail stamp designs, the stamp is square shape (well, almost) and its size is 37mm x 35mm. By the way, British stamps are the only stamps that do not bear the name of the country of issue on them, as the UK was the first country to issue prepaid postage stamps. The UK remains the only country not required to name itself on its stamps by agreement. For all other Universal Postal Union (UPU) members, the name must appear in Latin letters.

I don’t want to sound nerdish and don’t tell to many people, but I like collecting stamps. I am not a maniac who collect every single stamp of your interest, like specific theme, period, and country, but I just choose whatever appeals to me. I like simple and modern design from late 50’s to 60’s or current time, especially Dutch and German stamps. Some stamps are wonderfully designed all kind of themes in such a small size, by means of photograph, painting, and illustration. Especially some stamps are designed by famous designers and are works of art!

British Design Classic Stamps

今日１月１３日発売の、British Design Classics切手を手に入れた。コンコルド、ルートマスター（ロンドンにあった２階建バス）、ロンドン地下鉄マップ、ミニクーパー等、イギリスが世界に誇る20世紀のデザインが主人公の、1st class切手10種。イギリスのメディアでも注目の切手だ。Royal Mailによると、きっかけはミニクーパー生誕50周年。国営放送BBCの番組The Culture Showで行われたイギリスデザインの人気投票の結果を参考に、専門家の意見も取り入れて、10種類のデザインが切手用に選ばれた。The Guardianという新聞のウェブサイトに、それぞれのデザインの詳細があるので、チェックしてみて下さい。また、現在ヤフーオークションにこの切手セットを出品しています。オークションにご興味がある方はここをクリックして下さい。

ちなみに、イギリスの国内通常郵便には、1st classと2nd classがある。1st classは2nd classより割高だ（現在100g以下レター扱いで、1st classは36ペンス、2nd classは27ペンス）。1st classは2nd classより、1st classは1〜2日、2nd classは3日以上かかる、とRoyal Mailのウェブサイトにあるが、通常2nd classでも1〜2日以内で届くことが多いので、私は大事なメール以外は、2nd classを使っている。

I got the Royal Mail British Design Classics Stamps today – on the first day of its sale. 10 x 1st class stamps with 20th century British design classics, such as Concorde, London Underground Map, Mini and London Routemaster bus etc. The stamps are widely reported by the British Media. According to Royal Mail, the starting point was the 50th anniversary of the Mini. Then, with the help of experts in the field, and based on the result of BBC The Culture Show’s top 10 and 20 popular British design, they broadened the idea and chose 10 British design classics. Royal Mail domestic delivery service has 1st class mail and 2nd class mail. 1st class mail is more expensive than 2nd class (ex. letter under 100g cost 36p for 1st class and 27p for 2nd class). According to Royal Mail website, 1st class takes 1-2 days, and 2nd class takes more than 3 days, but usually 2nd class is delivered as fast as 1st class – so I normally use 2nd class mail except important ones.
