Daily Candyの今日のニュースレターで、Airbnb.comの記事を読んだ。「air bed-and-breakfast」を称するAirbnb.comは、部屋を貸したい人と借りたい人を結ぶウェブサービスで、2008年に設立、サンフランシスコに本部を置く。居間のソファから別荘、お城、運河に浮かぶナロウボートまで、167カ国8000都市のさまざまな物件が5万件近く登録され、オンラインやiPhoneから無料で登録、予約できる。貸し手は空いているスペースを使って収入を得ることができるし、借り手はホテル代わりのみならず、イベントや臨時保管場所など、いろんな用途に安く場所を借りられ、期間も1晩から長期間まで、空いている限り必要なだけ利用できる、便利なシステムだ。Airbnbは24時間顧客サービスで予約や取引を手助けし、借り手・貸し手双方からのレビューなどで不審な取引をチェック、問題のないように監視している。

どうして今Airbnbがロンドンで注目されているか？4月29日に行われる予定のウィリアム王子とケイト・ミドルトンさんの結婚式に、110万以上の人々がロンドンを訪問すると予想されている。ロンドンの12万のホテルの部屋は予約が殺到し、予約できたとしても値段が高過ぎるとか場所が悪いということもあり、Airbnbによれば、スペースに余裕があるロンドンの人たちは一晩£200以上手にすることができるとのこと。それに来年2012年は、オリンピックも開催されるので、お金儲けのいいチャンスだ。

オイシい話だけれど、残念ながら私たちは人様に貸す余分なスペースはない。でも、借り手としても悪い話じゃない。もしいい物件があれば、将来の旅行に利用するのもいいかも。Daily Candyによると、「LONDONCANDY」のコードを入力すると7月3日までの利用で、£25割引の特典あり。

Founded in 2008 in San Francisco, so called “air bed-and-breakfast” Airbnb is a community marketplace to connect people to list their space to spare with those who are looking for a place to stay, with currently 50,000 listings available in more than 8,000 cities and 167 countries. You can list for free for any spaces, a sofa in your flat, a holiday home, a castle, or even a narrow boat on a canal, at any price. You can list or book online or from an iPhone. Hosts can get extra money for your spare space and guests can have a place for any purpose, a travel accommodation, extra storage, or a party, for any period from just a night to months, as long as the place is available – a system which makes everyone happy except hotels. Airbnb.com facilitates bookings and financial transactions, providing 24-hour customer support, and looks carefully for suspicious behavior with reviews from both guests and hosts, to make the community free of trouble.

Why Airbnb is good for Londoners now? It’s expected that over 1.1 million people will come to London to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29. The city’s 120,000 hotel rooms is hard to reserve and even availabe, the price could be expensive or location may be inconvenient. So there is a chance for Londoners to “earn £200 or more per night renting out anything from a spare room to an entire flat on Airbnb during the Royal Wedding”, according to Airbnb. If the date is not suitable, Olympic 2012 will come next year.

Sounds great, but only if you have an extra space and we don’t, unfortunately. But you don’t have to be a host to take advantage from Airbnb. Groupon MyCityDeal UK

今年夏に登録したGroupon MyCityDeal。日本でもグルーポン・ジャパンが流行っているらしいのでご存知の人も多いだろうけれど、これは商品やサービスを割引価格で入手できるクーポンを、インターネット上で期間限定で販売する、フラッシュマーケティングと呼ばれる手法を用いた共同購入型クーポンで、発祥地・アメリカのGROUPONのイギリス版。全国版、ロンドンなどの地域限定版の「Deal（取引）」があって、一定時間内（大体24時間）に一定数の申し込みがあれば取引が成立し、晴れてクーポンを手にすることができる。オイシいdealを逃したくなければ、メールアドレスを登録すると、毎日その日のdealの案内がメールで送られてくる。最大90％オフと謳っているけれど、割引率は60％ぐらいで、有効期限は大体3〜6ヶ月だ。エステや美容関連のものが多いけれど、レストランやバー、お店、娯楽系のものもある。

私はこれまでに、13のクーポンをgetした。内訳は、レストランやアフタヌーン・ティー、お酒や食品のオンライン・ショッピング、お掃除サービスや、電気配線や修理などをやってくれる便利屋のサービス等々。使っていないクーポンも半分ぐらいあるけれど、今まで購入したdealには満足している。でも、今日のdealは失敗してしまった。Expedia.co.uk（エクスペディア）の£45相当のホテルクーポンが£5で買えるというものだったんだけれど、但し書き（fine print）をちゃんと読まなかったので、このクーポンが£280以上の予約でないと使えないことを後で知った。私達は1カ所に留まる旅行をあまりしないし、いつも初日と最終日だけホテルを予約して、後はレンタカーで気ままに回るというスタイルだから、1回で£280以上宿泊を予約したことがあまりない。使う機会があるかなあ。まあ£5だし、使わなくても大きな損失にならないからいいけれど。今後は、申し込みの前には必ず但し書きを読まなきゃ。

I registered with Groupon MyCityDeal this summer and I love it. Started in the US, “Groupon” is a collective buying power website that offers deal-of-the-day that consumers can buy a voucher for goods and service with discounted price. Deals are available in certain period of time (usually 24 hours), and once the required number of people have signed up to the offer, the deal is made and you can get the voucher. If you don’t want to miss a deal, subscribe the website and the Groupon will send you daily deals via e-mail. They said “up to 90% discount”, but normally about 60% off. Many of the deals are of hair and beauty salons, but there are also restaurants, bars, shops as well as others. Vouchers have an expiration, and many of them are 3 months and 6 months since the day of purchase.

I’ve bought 13 vouchers so far, including restaurants, afternoon tea, wine and food online shops, as well as cleaning and handyman services. I’ve used half of them and I am quite happy with the deals I purchased. But I think I made a mistake today… I applied a deal of Expedia.co.uk, offering £45 hotel voucher for the price of £5, without reading fine print. I realized later that the voucher is valid for bookings minimum spend of £280.  We rarely stay at one hotel for more than one or two nights. We usually reserve a hotel only on the first and the last nights, and go around without fixed schedule by a rent-a-car. I wonder if we have a chance to use the voucher… Thank god it’s only £5 and won’t be the end of the world even if wasted. I will definitely read fine print next time I purchase a deal!

Habitat @ Tottenham Court Road

南には電器店が、そして中程にはインテリア・ショップが並ぶトッテナム・コート・ロードにあるHabitat（ハビタ）。少し前、黒のポリエステルでコーティングされたワイヤ製の台所の水切りラック（CACTI）を£8（約1150円）で買ったのだが、3月3日から始まった春のセールで、2割引の£6.40になっていた。なかなかおしゃれだし、家のシンクにぴったり合うサイズで重宝しているけれど、ちょっとショック。しかも、友人のプレゼントに定価で買ったのと同じものが、半額になっていた。彼女がお店に行って値段を見たら、セコいプレゼントだと思われそうで嫌だなあ。

When we need something for home, I go to Habitat on Tottenham Court Road, where there are electric shops on the south and interior shops in the middle. Few weeks ago I bought polyester coated wire dish drainer CACTI for £8, but the price has been slashed 20% to £6.40, since big spring sale started on March 3rd. I am a bit disappointed but more than that, the present for my friend I bought for full price also became half price. I hope my friend wouldn’t see the price tag and think that I am stingy for her…

お手頃価格で素敵なデザインの商品が買えるので、Habitatにはたびたびお世話になっている（過去のエントリー参照）。しかし、2004/05期から赤字が続いていて、昨年12月には、Habitatの前オーナーでIKEAの創業者ファミリーの経営する会社IKANOもお手上げとなり、経営再建のスペシャリストであるHilcoに売却された（関連記事）。最近はしょっちゅうセールをしたり割引券がメールで送られてきたりしていて、このセールも、通常のセール時期と違うし下げ幅も大きいし、何だか必死な感じ。また、この時ロンドンにいなかったので知らなかったのだけれど、Habitatは昨年6月、TwitterでアップルやiPhone、昨年のイラン総選挙などに言及した「Hashtags」を使って、トピックとは全然関係のない自社製品を宣伝していたとして批判を浴びたという（関連記事）。今のところ閉店の予定はないそうだけれども、業績が好転しなくて倒産、ということにならないといいのだけれど。

I like Habitat, because I can buy sleek home products for reasonable price (see my past entry). But Habitat is not doing well in the last few years and has been recorded a loss since 2004/05, and  in December 2009, the former owner of IKANO, owned by the IKEA founder Kamprad family, sold the company to Hilco, a restructuring specialist (see the related article). Recently Habitat does sale often and also send out an e-mail newsletter with discount voucher. This sale during an unusual period offers quite big discount. I didn’t know the news as we were not in London, but in June 2009, Habitat was criticized for taking advantage of the list of trending topics, including hashtags referring to Apple and the iPhone as well as the 2009 Iranian election protests, on the social-networking service Twitter to promote its products (see related article).  I am wondering if Habitat is desperate. It is sad that Hilco is not thought to be planning the closure of any shops, but hopefully Habitat survives…

Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting @ Hayward Gallery

アメリカ人現代美術アーティスト、エド・ルシェの50年間の作品78点を集めた回顧展「Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting」が、サウスバンク・センターにあるHayward Gallery（ヘイワード・ギャラリー）で1月10日まで開催されている。ルシェは、18歳で故郷のオクラホマシティを離れ、ロスの学校でグラフィックデザインとファインアートを学んだ後、ロサンゼルスをベースに活動を続けている。アメリカの日常生活から題材を取ったイメージと言葉（タイポグラフィー）を結合させたカラフルな作品は、時にポップアートムーブメントと結びつけられるが、概念芸術、現実主義、超現実主義等とジャンルを超えた作品を作り続ける彼自身は、安易に特定のカテゴリーに入れられるのを嫌う。

政治的メッセージの強い作品や抽象的すぎる作品等、あんまり好きじゃないものもあるけれど、印刷物、グラフィックデザイン、映画、写真への造詣を反映した、シンプルで平坦なタッチの彼の作品を集めたこの回顧展は、私の中では、今年見た展覧会の中でもトップの部類に入る。ルシェは、ありきたりの退屈な日常風景を、概念やドラマを与えることによって、生き生きと描き出す。展覧会のポスターにも使われている「Standard Station」や、「The Old Tech-Chem Building」などの産業施設を描いた作品は、ダイナミックさを与える斜線の多用、題材のまわりのゆったりとしたスペース、そしてミニマリスト的なアプローチが、印象に残る。また、映画の影響の大きい「Exit」「The End」等、80年代〜90年代初期の白黒の作品は物寂しげで心つかまれるし、これらの作品とは対照的に、「The Mountain」を代表とする近年の山をテーマに描かれた作品は、明るい空を背景に丁寧に描き込まれている山々と、山とは何の関係もない、シンプルなタイポグラフィーの組み合わせが，何故か清々しい気分にさせてくれ、心洗われる。

Hayward Gallery‘s “Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting” is the first major UK retrospective of American artist Ed Ruscha featuring 78 of his paintings, running until January 10, 2010.

Since Ruscha left Oklahoma City where he grew up at the age of 18 to study fine art and graphic design in Los Angeles, he has been based in Los Angeles. His flat but colorful paintings of common objects and use of text on his works have often linked with the Pop Art movement, but Ruscha is also considered as a conceptualist, a realist and a surrealist, though he defies such easy categorisation.

Though some of his works are not my cup of tea, such as pieces which are too political or too abstract, but this is one of my favorite exhibition of this year. Embracing his interest in printed matter, graphic design, cinema and photography, Ruscha enliven mundane everyday life objects and cityscape of Los Angeles by adding theme and drama to them. I like “Standard Station” which is one of his most known work and used for the exhibition poster, and a series of paintings of industrial facilities such as “The Old Tech-Chem Building“, with his minimalist approach to the subjects; use of diagonal lines which gives dynamic effect, and generous space around the subject. His 80’s ~ early 90’s black & white film-like somber works such as “Exit” and “The End” are moving and touching. On the contrary to these melancholic works, his recent pieces with ‘mountain’ theme including “The Mountain“, elaborately drawn mountain with beautiful blue sky and superimposed type which doesn’t have any connection to the mountain, are strangely refreshing and inspiring.
