London’s One Room Hotel: “A Room for London” Art Project @ Southbank Centre

Southbank Centre（サウスバンク・センター）の上に乗っかった船。これは、London 2012 Festivalの一環のアートプロジェクト「A Room for London」、テムズ川を見下ろす一部屋だけのホテル。London 2012 Festivalは、北京オリンピック終了後の2008年9月より4年間に渡って行われている文化芸術プログラム「Cultural Olympiad（カルチュラル・オリンピアード）」のハイライトとして、6月21日から9月9日まで、ロンドン・オリンピックの開催中、無料コンサートやアート展など、約1000ものパフォーマンスやイベントが催される他、フェスティバル前にも様々なカウントダウンイベントが行われる予定。

この「A Room for London」は、ジョゼフ・コンラッドの1899年出版の小説「Heart of Darkness（闇の奥）」に出てくる、テムズ川を出発しアフリカのコンゴに至る旅に使われたriverboat（川船）にインスピレーションを得て、David Kohn ArchitectsとアーティストのFiona Bannerが制作した。一晩限り、二人まで宿泊可能で宿泊料は£120〜、公的プロジェクトだからか、メディアも注目する期間限定の特別ホテルなのに、値段はかなり控えめ。あいにく昨年9月9日に始まった1〜6月の予約は開始12分で満室になったけれど、7〜12月の予約は来週19日正午に始まる。メディアでも取り上げられているので応募多数と予測されるけれど、想い出作りに、運試しに申し込んでみるのもいいかも。

A classic boat appeared on the top of Southbank Centre, overlooking the river Thames – this is an arts project “A Room for London” and it is a part of the London 2012 Festival. The London 2012 Festival is a huge cultural celebration, coinciding with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, and a culmination of the a four-year programme of cultural events “Cultural Olympiad“, started in 2008 just after Beijing Olympic. From June 21 to September 9, 2012, there will be 1,000 performances and events such as free concerts and art exhibitions, as well as countdown events before the Festival opens.

Inspired by the riverboat captained by Joseph Conrad while in the Congo in 1890, later recreated in his novel Heart of Darkness, David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner created this unique art project. General public can rent out this space for £120〜 for up to two people for one night only. The price is quite reasonable with the premium to stay at the special art project with  limited period and public attention – probably because it is a public event for everybody. Unfortunately the riverboat is sold out during January–June, just 12 minutes after going live on September 8th last year, but bookings for the period of July to December will go on sale online at 12pm on January 19 next week. Elvey Farm @ Pluckley, Kent

先週書いたケント旅行の際、Pluckley（プラックリー）にあるElvey Farm（エルヴィ・ファーム）に宿泊した。後で調べたら、プラックリーは、1998年にギネス・ワールド・レコード（ギネス世界記録）により「英国で一番幽霊の出る村」に認定された村なのだそう（参考サイト）！村人の話では、村周辺に12〜16の幽霊がいるとのこと。しかもエルヴィ・ファームのバーの上の屋根裏部屋に行く階段に、軍隊の制服を着た男が立っているのだそうだ。私たちの泊まった部屋は、まさにその屋根裏部屋。幸い霊感がないので、幽霊は見なかったけれど、滞在中は知らなくて良かった。。。

幽霊話はともあれ、エルヴィ・ファームは、なだらかな丘や小麦畑、果樹園など豊かな自然に囲まれた75エーカーの農場。到着すると、フレンドリーなラブラドールが歓迎してくれる。馬小屋棟、納屋、ホップ・麦芽の乾燥がま、穀物蔵の中に作られた宿泊用の部屋は、ジャコビアン建築の特徴を生かしつつ、アンティークとモダンな家具を配してセンス良く仕上げられている。周囲には、、美しい田園風景を満喫できる遊歩道や乗馬道がいくつもあるのだが、私たちは途中で迷ってしまい、降り出した雨の中、1時間のルートを3時間もかけ、すっかり暗くなってしまう直前に、ずぶぬれで何とか帰り着いた。その後は、16世紀の厩舎を改装したレストランで、地元の材料を使ったKentish料理（ケント料理）のディナー。特別美味しい訳ではなかったけれど、材料は新鮮で悪くない。いかにもイギリスの田舎風の部屋は素敵だけれど、寝返りを打つ度にベッドのマットレスがギシギシ音をたてるのと、朝早くから下のバーで話す声が丸聞こえで熟睡できなかったのが残念。若干の問題はあったけれど、久しぶりの田舎を満喫した一日でした。

We stayed at Elvey Farm in Pluckley when we traveled to Kent. I didn’t know that Pluckley is said to be “the most haunted village in Britain”, according to the Guinness Book of Records, and it is reputed to have twelve (possibly thirteen or fourteen) ghosts (reference)! There is a rumor that there is a male ghost in military uniform on the stairs from a bar downstairs to a bedroom in the attic, exactly where we stayed, at Elvey Farm as well… Fortunately we didn’t see the ghost, but I am glad that I didn’t know while I was there!

Put the ghost stuffs aside, Elvey Farm is a Jacobean inn with the 75 acres of farm lands surrounded by rolling hills, meadows, orchard, and wheat fields. Friendly labrador welcomed us when we arrived. The farm has rooms in the Stable Block, Barn, Oast House and Granary, stylishly decorated with both antique and contemporary furniture which create a good harmony with ancient beams and rafters. Around the farm, there are many paths and bridleways to explore the beautiful Kentish countryside. Unfortunately we got lost, and came back just before the complete darkness, soaked up with rains, after taking 3 hours for a 1-hour path. After the long walk, we had a Kentish dinner using local ingredients at the converted 16-century barn. The food was OK, not special, but I could taste the fresh ingredients. The very British room we stayed was spacious and atmospheric, but we couldn’t sleep well, as mattress made noise every time we changed the position, as well as early-morning (loud) talks at the bar downstairs and contraction outside. But overall, we enjoyed a peaceful country day after staying in London for many months.

昨日、ロンドン地下鉄を利用した際いちばん目についた、「Enjoy England」のポスター。航空写真を使用した、インパクトのある広告だ。

Enjoy Englandは、イングランド観光局（イギリス観光局の一部）の公式ウェブサイトで、イングランド地方のツーリズム振興を目的としている（ちなみにイギリス観光局公式ウェブサイトは、Visit Britain）。ウェブサイトでは、登録された27000ものホテルやB&Bなどの中から宿泊先が検索できる他、イングランド地方の観光アトラクションやイベント情報とチケット販売、都市別観光情報、また旅行のアイデアや割引情報等、イングランド地方を旅行するのに必要な情報が得られる。

Enjoy England is the official tourist board for England and part of British Tourist Authority, ‘Visit Britain’, and enjoyengland.com is its official website. On the site, you can find all information necessary for traveling in England.  You can find a place to stay among 27,000 registered accommodation, and get an information about destinations and attractions and events in England region. You can also buy a ticket for events and attractions. The website also offers holiday ideas, and you can find some wonderful offers as well.
