“Renew” Recycle Bins in the Square Mile

Renew‘ is a recycling bin with LCD screens on both sides, placed about 100 within Square Mile. This glossy bomb-proof heavy-duty pods costing £30,000, not only swallow recycle materials such as paper, cans and plastic bottles, but also entertain passersby with a variety of information displayed on the screens. Renew transmits between 6am and 23:59pm each market day, and includes breaking financial and corporate news, general news headlines, weather forecasts and other topics including sport, fashion, travel, the arts and entertainment, as well as updates during emergencies and local information such as Tube and NHS, and of course advertisements as well.  →further details

Although being installed initially from January 26, I’ve never noticed Renew. It is a bit too hard to look at the screen as the screen is low, especially for tall men, but it would help you kill your time while waiting at a traffic light, a bus or your friend, in case you forget your smartphone with you. It is said that other cities abroad such as New York, Singapore and Tokyo are interested in the concept of Renew.

Good-bye to DailyCandy London…

To check a daily newsletter from DailyCandy is one of the first thing I do every morning and what is new in town (see my past entry). However, just the day before yesterday on a leap day, I received the last one, saying good-bye from DailyCandy without a reason or explanation, all of a sudden. I have no clue what happened to DailyCandy – no information I found on the internet. However, the website of DailyCandy London edition is still working, and there are some up-to-date online articles of March 1 & 2, though these are not London-specific info, but about a film and US online shops.

DailyCandy gave me a lot of useful information about London, such as opening of chic restaurants and cool shops, fun events and some cute stuffs to buy. Very sad. Thank you DailyCandy, you helped me a lot to know London better, and made me adore this city!

“Get Ahead of the Games” Website to Help You Avoid Traffic Chaos

The London 2012 Olympic Games will start in less than 6 months. The city will be much busier than usual during the period, so in order to help Londoners and visitors avoid travel ‘hotspots’ in the city and some UK’s roads and rail networks, the ‘Get Ahead of the Games’, with new advertising campaign, website and social media channels, has been launched.

The website, developed by Transport for London on behalf of the Olympic Delivery Authority, London 2012, the Department for Transport, the Highways Agency, National Rail and the Mayor of London, provides the traveling public with information of if, where, and when travel will be affected, and helps you  find an alternative route and journey if necessary.

The website contains:

If you are Twitter user, by following the @GAOTG Twitter channel will give you the the latest tips, travel information and advice as well.

It sounds very useful when you travel to/through busy areas in London. But one problem, I don’t like the illustration on the website and advertising campaign (it reminds me of annoying Lloyds TSB ads, for some reason) – a bit old-fashioned, as much as Olympic logo and mascots. I thought London is the design capital of the world. What happened to Cool Britannia?! or I am the one who has outdated taste, and these are ‘cool’ now??

Londonist: Think London, Londoner, Londonist

When I surf over the internet, looking for information for my blog, I sometimes find it within Londonist website. Probably many of you already know about it, but I myself want to know more about it so I researched a bit, and write about it to salute their effort to brighten up us Londoners’ rather boring life otherwise.

Londonist is a comprehensive “website about London and everything that happens in it”, according to its facebook info. It covers news, events, reviews, arts, culture, fashion, restaurants and bars, transports, and sports, as well as history and future of London – literally anything. The website not only deals with mainstream topics but also talks about the other side of the city – eccentricities, quirks, secrets, and surprises.

Londonist was founded in 2004, as a part of US-based Gothamist‘s city-centric blog network. By 2006 it was “ranked in the UK’s 50 most influential blogs” (the Hospital Club), and was awarded the Guardian’s “Top London Blogger” in 2010. In the same year in 2010, Londonist was transferred to the London-based startup LDN Creative and became an independently-operated affiliate of Gothamist (Wikipedia / Londonist).

A look of the website is simple and rather generic, but all what you want to know is likely there. They seem to have loads of excellent informants – their up-to-date information comes out very fast and covers all around the city, beating many print media and London local news sources. Massive 15,606 people  (as of today) “like” the Londonist on its facebook page. It is an achievement!

New Look for BBC 2012

It is less than 200 days (precisely saying, 192 days) to go til London Olympic 2012, and all kinds of constructions and building works, including maintenance works of some tube stations and revamping rail stations such as Blackfriars station and Farrindon station, now seem to be speeding up and this make us feel the Olympic is coming. Exciting, though many Londoners complain the noise, reduced road width and diversion caused by never-ending works that we encounter every corner of the city.

BBC, British national broadcaster that most of you already know, has changed the look of BBC 2012, a website launched last July, dedicated to London Olympic. The site showcases a variety of contents arising from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, ie. news, sport, drama, arts, culture, comedy, traffics as well as other useful info, gathered from BBC’s online, television and radio, in the form of live coverage, video and audio clips, background stories, pictures and cast interviews. Together with London Olympic’s official website London 2012, it will be a good media for information of olympic games and related events. → BBC blog for more details
