Olympic Synchronised Swimming Women’s Duet Final @ Aquatics Centre, Olympic Park

初めてのオリンピック・パーク体験！期間中に、ロンドン東部のストラトフォード・シティにあるメインのオリンピック会場を見たいがために、£120するシンクロのデュエット決勝のチケットを買った。

My first time at Olympic Park in Stratford City! I bought a ticket for synchronised swimming women’s duet final for £120, just to see the Olympic Park during the Games.

決勝に進出した12組のペア。観客席はかなり急で、見上げるとかなり怖い。下の方の席で良かった。でも最高Aクラスの割に（このクラスのチケットしか残っていなかった）ポジションが良くなくて残念。

Twelve pairs who went through to the final. The audience seats was very steep and bit scary to look up – thank god my seat was on a lower row. I was a bit disappointed by the position which is quite angular despite of its most expensive A class price (only this class was available).

自転車競技施設・Velopark（ヴェロパーク）。自転車競技は、ボートと並びイギリスのお家芸で、計9個（金7・銀1・銅1）のメダルを獲得した。

Olympic Women’s Volleyball Preliminary Round @ Earl’s Court

オリンピック体験第3弾は、アールズ・コート展示センターで行われたバレーボール女子予選、日本対イギリス戦とイタリア対ロシア戦のダブルヘッダー。会場はアールズ・コート駅西側の出口のすぐ目の前なのだけれど、この日は混乱を避けるためか、東側が出口、西側が入口専用となっていたので、いつもより歩かされた。アールズ・コート展示センターは、以前にも100％デザイン展（参照：2009年/2010年）で数回行ったことがあるが、巨大な倉庫みたいな建物で、照明が少し暗めで床はコンクリートとちょっと殺風景な感じだけれど、中は大勢の観客で活気づいている。

開催国イギリスが登場するとあって、会場は大盛況。試合前やセット間は、マイクを持った男性が観客を盛り上げたり、スクリーンに映った観客にスクリーン上に描かれた太鼓を叩かせたりと大忙し。タイムアウトや休憩になる度に大音量の音楽が流れ、ポンポンを持ったチアリーダーが踊る。観客を退屈させないようにという配慮なんだろうけれど、ウルサいったらありゃしない。特にどこのオリンピック会場でもしょっちゅう流れる、クイーンの「ウィ・ウィル・ロック・ユー」には、正直うんざり。できれば余興なしで試合に集中したかった。

この日の試合は、第一試合は日本が2-0、第二試合はロシアが3−2で勝利。第二試合はフルセットまで行く手に汗握る攻防だったが、第一試合は日本の圧勝で、Mは退屈してイライラ。日本の勝利は嬉しいけれど、もう少しイギリスチームにも頑張って欲しかったな。

My Olympic experience No.3 was volleyball preliminary games (Japan vs UK, Italy vs Russia) at Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre. The venue is just in front of the west exit but we had to walk from the east exit quite a while on the day, as the east side was exit only and west side was entrance only to avoid the chaos. We went to Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre several times for 100% Design (past entries: 2009 / 2010). The place is like a huge tasteless warehouse with concrete floors and a bit dark, but it was quite lively with lots of spectators.

Atmosphere inside was full of enthusiasm as British team competed on the first game. The guy with microphone was busy cheering up the audience by talking excitedly and let people who were showed on screen to beat illustrated drums appeared on the screen. Cheerleaders were dancing with the loud music during the timeouts or in-between sets. So much noise all through the games! I understand that they tried to do anything to entertain the people, but it was too much. Now I am sick of Queen‘s “We Will Rock You“, which has been played repeatedly in all Olympic venues…

This day, Japan beat UK 2-0 on the first game and Russia won with 3-2 to Italy on the second. The game of Russia and Italy was heated up for full-sets and was very exciting, but M got bored while watching the first game – I was happy that Japan won, but I wished UK played a bit better…

Olympic Women’s Football Quarter Final @ Cardiff Millenium Stadium

私のオリンピック体験２番目は、ウェールズの首都・カーディフのミレニアム・スタジアムで行われた女子サッカー準々決勝、日本対ブラジル戦。カーディフまではパディントン駅から電車で2時間ちょっと。Super Off-Peak Returnという混雑時以外に使用できる割安切符でも往復£67.50（約8250円）かかる（see past entry for more about train fare）。ロンドンの会場で行われる試合は、チケット代にゾーン1〜9内乗り放題の1日券が含まれているのに、ロンドン以外の会場だと何もなし。甚だ不公平だ。そもそも「ロンドン・オリンピック」と銘打っているにも関わらず、男女ともサッカーの試合は、ウェンブリー・スタジアムで行われる数試合を除き、グラスゴー、ニューカッスル、マンチェスター、コヴェントリー、カーディフと、ロンドン以外のスタジアムで行われる。ロンドンは、ウェンブリー・スタジアムに加え、3万5000人以上収容できる大規模スタジアムが５つもあるのに（エミレーツ・スタジアム、スタンフォード・ブリッジ、ホワイト・ハート・レーン、ブーリン・グラウンド）、どうしてオリンピックで使用わないんだろう？LOCOG（ロンドンオリンピック・パラリンピック組織委員会）が、他都市にもオリンピック気分を味わってもらうためにそうしたのではないかと勝手に推測しているのだけれど、各地への移動を強いられる選手たちやサポーターにとっては、移動時間も出費もかかるし、たまったもんじゃない。

でも、2−0で日本が勝ったし、カーディフの人たちは皆フレンドリーだったし、翌日カーディフ観光も楽しんだということで、無駄足ではなかった。またカーディフ観光については後日書きます。

My Olympic game no.2 was the women’s football quarter final at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Cardiff is about two hours away by train from London Paddington station, and it cost £67.50/pp for Super Off-Peak Return fare, which is cheaper than normal fare but not cheap for supporters travelling from London (過去のエントリー. It is unfair that an Olympic ticket for any London venue includes one day travel card which you can travel free of charge within zone 1-9 (basically anywhere in London), but nothing for non-London venue. It’s a bit strange as it is called ‘London’ Olympic, but most of the Olympic football games both women’s and men’s tournaments are held outside London, except some at Wembley Stadium; in Glasgow, New Castle, Manchester, Cardiff and Coventry. London has five large football stadium with a capacity of over 35,000; Wembley Stadium, Emirates Stadium, Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane, and Boleyn Ground, and I don’t understand why these stadium can’t be used for the Olympics! I guess that LOCOG intends to share some excitement with other British cities, but it is not nice for footballers and supporters who have to travel all over the country to see the games.

However, Japan beat Brazil 2-0 and we enjoyed sightseeing of Cardiff the day after, so it was worth it at the end of the day. And everyone was nice in Cardiff :) I will talk about my trip to Cardiff later.

Granger & Co @ Westbourne Grove

Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertisingに行った時にランチした、 Granger & CO。オーストラリアのセレブシェフ・Bill Granger（ビル･グレンジャー）が昨年、ノッティング・ヒルのWestbourne Grove（ウェストボーン・グローヴ）にオープンさせた。1993年のシドニーのbills一号店を皮切りに、現在オーストラリアに3店、日本（神奈川・東京）に4店を展開、Granger & COはイギリス第一号店となる。グレンジャーは数年前にロンドンに移住。イギリスのTV番組に出演したり、レシピ本も9冊（日本では2冊）出版しているそう。

ライトウッドを基調にレモンイエローの椅子を配し、気取らずセンスよくまとめた今どきのインテリア。現在快進撃中のダウンアンダー系（オーストラリア・ニュージーランド）カフェ＆レストランと同じく、カジュアルダイニングを提供するGranger & COも人気。予約不可なので、混雑する時間帯は待ち時間も長いという。All Day Diningでいつでも食事できるので、ランチとディナーの間のお茶タイムがリラックスできてお薦め（ランチは5時までいただける）。新鮮で良質な材料を使い、ありきたりに見えるメニューもちょっとひねりが利いていて、味は上々。ポッシュなエリアのせいか、値段はランチでも一皿10ポンド超とお高めだけれど、ボリュームがあるのでお腹は充分満たされる。

We had lunch at Granger & CO, when we went to Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising. This is the UK’s first venue of an Australian celeb chef & restauranteur Bill Granger. He set up his first restaurant in in Sydney in 1993, and now he has total of eight venues in the world: one in London, three in Australia, and four in Japan. He also published 9 cook books, and appeared on British TV after moving to London a couple of years ago.

The restaurant is spacious and bright, finished in trendy style of ‘casual-chic’ with light woods x lemon yellow chairs. Like other down-under (Aussie & Kiwi) eateries, Granger & CO is popular, offering good casual dining. There may be a queue during busy time, as they don’t accept reservation – now many newcomers of this kind has no bookings policy that often makes food critiques mad. It offers all-day dining and lunch is served until 5pm, so between lunch and dinner time would be the best time to go for relaxing atmosphere. Their dishes are easy to understand, unlike other down-under fellows Caravan and St. Ali, but have a bit of twists with ingredients and condiments that make their food different from other restaurants. Reflecting the posh area of Notting Hill, dining costs more than Shoreditch, with a casual lunch dish costs over £10. But the dish, using good quality fresh ingredients, is big enough to give my stomach a satisfaction.

For Japan Charity Auction: Architecture for Humanity @ HotShoe Gallery

明日6〜8時、Farringdon（ファリンドン）にあるHotshoe Galleryで、津波の被害を受けた東北地方の長期再建に役立てるため、写真のチャリティ・セール／オークション「For Japan」が行われる。8月2〜5日の間、日本や日本文化をテーマとした、世界中から寄せられた写真の中から選ばれた100点を展示。その売上げは、「Architecture for Humanity」の仙台プロジェクトオフィスに直接贈られる。

Architecture for Humanityは、貧困地帯や災害地において、建築の観点から人道的・緊急支援を行うNPOで、現在仙台で、孤児院、アート＆ミュージック・セラピーセンター、地方レベルでの経済復興のための中小ビジネス支援イニシアティブ「urban acupuncture」、日本政府の復興10年計画に含まれていない小さな漁村の再建など様々なプロジェクトを行っている。

There will be a charity print sale/auction of photographs, “For Japan,” tomorrow between 6-8pm at Hotshoe Gallery in Farringdon, to raise funds for the long term reconstruction of the tsunami devastated north east region of Japan. The photographs, which evoke and celebrate Japanese culture, were submitted from all over the world, and selected 100 photographs have been on show from August 2 to 5. The proceeds will go directly to the Architecture for Humanity project office in Sendai.

Architecture for Humanity is a non profit organisation which offers building and design support in response to humanitarian and emergency needs. It is working in Sendai on a number of projects including an orphanage, an art and music therapy centre, an ‘urban acupuncture’ initiative to help get small businesses back on their feet to kick start economic recovery on a local level, a small scale fishing village reconstruction (rebuilding along the coastline is not included in the Japanese government’s 10 year plan).
