Design Hotels Collector’s Edition Annual Book Launch Party @ South Place Hotel

デザイナーズホテルの予約サイト・Design Hotelsが、会社設立20年を記念し、限定版イヤーブックを発行した。私たちはDesign Hotelsにメンバー登録していたため招待状が送られて来たので、Design Hotelsに最近加盟した、リバプールストリート駅近くのSouth Place Hotelで、15日に開催された発行記念パーティに、この特別版イヤーブックを見に行って来た。

現在ベルリンに本部を置くDesign Hotelsは1993年、カリフォルニアに設立。世界40カ国以上の250以上の独立系デザイナーズホテルが参加する、デザイン・インテリア好き御用達のサイトだ。参加ホテルを美しい写真入りで網羅した、800ページのこの限定版「XXL Collecter’s Edition」は、何と25kgもある馬鹿でかい本（写真上）。お値段はなんと€2,500もするのだが、フィンランドのデザイン会社・Artekが特別に製作したAlvar Aalto（アルヴァ・アールト）のStool 60とテーブルがついてくる（写真参照：Wallpaper）。そんなに大枚をはたけないという人のためにも、実用的で小型サイズのAnniversary Edition（ €59.90）も販売している。パーティのゲストには、本の概要とメンバーホテルをコンパクトに網羅した「Directions」（写真下）が無料で配られた。このDirectionsも中々の出来。ウェブサイトでもホテルの写真や概要は見られるし、私的にはこれ１冊で充分かも？

Design Hotels has released a special anniversary edition of its annual book to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The subscribers to Design Hotels were invited to the launch party on May 15th at one of their newly added member hotel, South Place Hotel near Liverpool Street Station, so we grabbed the opportunity to see their new book.

Founded in California in 1993, now Berlin-based Design Hotels has a network of over 250 independent boutique hotels in over 40 countries worldwide. The 800-page limited XXL Collecter’s Edition, showcasing their member hotels, is humongous and weighs 25kg. It cost €2,500 but also comes with Alvar Aalto’s Stool 60 and table, which have been specially customised by Finnish design company Artek (more photos: Wallpaper). They also have smaller and more practical Anniversary Edition for €59.90. For the party guests, they even had smaller free exclusive copy ‘Directions’, including snapshots of the annual book and the directory of the member hotels. Very nice itself!

Mr & Mrs Smith New Italy Hotel Collection

Mr & Mrs Smithの新しいホテルガイド、 「Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: Italy」が、先月21日に出版された。Mr & Mrs Smithの他のガイドと同じく、スタイリッシュなデザイン、美しい写真にセンスのいい色使いと、素敵な本に仕上がっている。掲載されているホテルも、プチホテルから中規模デザインホテル（大規模高層ホテルチェーンはない）、シティホテルからリゾート、そして値段もリーズナブルなところから長期滞在は考えられない高級ホテルまで、Mr & Mrs Smithならではのテイストの良いホテルが集められている。

強いて欠点をいえば、ライトグレーやスモーキーイエローなど、薄い色の背景に白地の文字がとても読みにくいこと。旅行雑誌の記事のように、ライターの個人的体験を綴ったホテルレビューが、ちょっと長くて鬱陶しいこと。ルネッサンス・アートのYES/NOチャートが意味不明なこと。パスタのイラストがパスタに見えないこと（写真の方が分かりやすいと思う）、か。

Mr & Mrs Smith‘s new hotel guide,” Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collection: Italy” is published last month. Like other Mr & Mrs Smith‘s gudes, the book is stylishly made: cool design, nice photos, and sophisticated colours. Hotels selected for the book are sleek and chic, typical of Mr & Mrs Smith, and in good variety: from petit B&B to moderate size boutique hotels (but neither skyscrapers nor international mega chains on the book); affordable to upscale that makes me hesitate to stay long; city hotels as well as country retreats.

If I have to list up shortcomings of the guide, it would be: hard-to-read white types on light colours like light gray and smokey yellow; hotel reviews based on writer’s personal experiences, like in articles on travel magazines, are a bit long and irritating (a list of facts is well enough on a guide); make-no-sense YES/NO chart for “HOW TO…identify Renaissance art”; and illustrations of pasta which don’t look like pasta – photos maybe easier to understand this case.

Daunt Books @ Marylebone High Street

来週からの旅行に先立ち、以前に書いたコベント・ガーデンのStanfordsと、メリルボーン・ハイ・ストリートにあるDaunt Booksにガイドブックを見に行った。ロンドンで旅行ガイドや地図を探すなら、Daunt BooksとStanfordsの2店がお薦め。

Daunt Booksは、メリルボーン・ハイ・ストリートに本店を置く本屋で、チェルシーやHampstead（ハムステッド）、Holland Park（ホーランド・パーク）、Belsize Park（べルサイズ・パーク）のロンドンの高級住宅地4カ所と、シティに支店がある。小説や児童書など普通の本も売っているけれど、何より、ガイドブックや紀行本、写真集から、歴史、フィクション＆ノンフィクション、レシピや食べ物ガイドまで、その国に関するありとあらゆる本が、国別にずらっと並んでいるのが、Daunt Booksの特徴。平凡な入口からは想像できないけれど、樫の木で作られた長い本棚が並び、ウィリアム・モリスの壁紙で飾られた、エドワード朝様式のクラシックな店の奥には、天窓がついた、明るくて広々とした売り場が広がる（写真2）。この1階と、古い図書館のような趣の地下の売り場（写真3）が、世界各国に関する本で埋め尽くされている。

We went to Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street to look for a guidebook for our trip from next week, as well as Stanfords in Covent Garden that I wrote in the past. If you look for a travel guide or a map, Daunt Books and Stanfords are the places to check in London.

Daunt Books is a bookshop based in Marylebone High Street, with four branches in wealthy neighborhood  of Chelsea, Holland Park, Hampstead and Belsize Park and one in the City. Although selling also usual books such as novels and children’s books, Daunt Books specialises in travel books,using a unique system which arranges the books by country. You can find any book related to a specific country on the same book shelves, from the guide books and travel writings to history, fiction & non-fiction, photography, and recipes and food guides. It is hard to imagine from its average-looking entrance, but on the back of its classic Edwardian shop with long oak galleries and William Morris prints, there is an airy space with an abundance of natural light through skylights (the second photo), as well as more library-looking downstair (the third photo), dedicated for the books perfect for your vacation in any part of the world.

Debrett’s Guide for the Modern Gentleman

Mが最近買った本で、なかなか面白いと思ったのがこれ。イギリスは紳士の国、と信じている人も多いけれど、イギリスでもマナーや常識のない人たちの行いに呆気にとられる事が多々ある。まあそれはどの国でも一緒かもしれないし、文化的な違いもあるだろうから、適当に流しているけど。この本は、できればそんな方々に是非一読していただきたい本。またイギリス暮らしで知っておきたい知識が満載なので、イギリスに住む外国人にもお薦め。

「Guide for the Modern Gentleman」は、1769年創業の出版社、Debrett社が発行。20世紀の中頃から、伝統的なイギリスのエチケットを著した本の数々を出版している。時代錯誤のマナーではなく、仕事、身だしなみ、家まわり、シティ・ライフ、余暇、車、旅行、グルメ、現代の騎士道など、現代生活に必要な情報やアドバイスを、微に入り細に入り、ウィットとユーモアを交えて掲載している。クラシックでエレガントなフォント、可愛いカラーの挿絵や古い本に出てくるような白黒の木版画のイラスト、そして手触りのいいマットな紙と、本の装丁も素敵。

この本は男性をターゲットにしているけれど、Debrettは女性向けに「Etiquette for Girls」、そして一般向けに「A-Z of Modern Manners」も出版している。またウェブサイトでも、日常生活のエチケットや結婚式など、いろいろな情報やアドバイスが無料で見られる。

This is the book M bought recently and it is quite interesting. Many foreigners may still believe that UK is a country of ‘gentlemen’, but I often encounter a person stunningly without basic manner or common sense. I just let it go because there are always obnoxious people in any society and I may have misunderstood something as a foreigner. But this is the kind of book I really want them to read. Also this book is useful for foreigners who live here to learn how to behave here in UK.

“Guide for the Modern Gentleman” is published by Debrett, a specialist publisher founded in 1769. Dating from the mid 1900s, Debrett’s has published a range of guides on traditional British etiquette. This book doesn’t teach you old-fashioned manners, but it covers all aspects of life for the modern man such as work, maintenance including tailoring and grooming, home, city life, time off, sports, motoring, travel, food & drinks, and new ‘chivalry‘, and gives us all kinds of information and advice in details, with wits and humors. The book itself is nicely done, with a classic elegant typeface and cute color illustrations and black & white woodcut prints published on a nice soft matt paper.

This book targets men, but also women can get a lot of general knowledge from it and learn what men care. “Etiquette for Girls” is also available for women and “A-Z of Modern Manners” for general audience. Debrett’s website offers a variety of information as well on all occasions of life such as everyday etiquette and wedding, and it is free ;-).

Art & Design Bookshops in London: Artwords and Magma

昨日、ブロードウェイ・マーケットのl’eau à LA BOUCHE（ロアラブッシュ）に行った時に、「Artwords Bookshop」が最近オープンしたのに気づいた。Artwords Bookshopは、コンテンポラリー・ビジュアルアート系の本や雑誌、ビデオなどを扱うショップで、Rivington PlaceがあるショーディッチのRivington Streetに、一号店がある。数坪ほどの狭いRivington Street店の方に比べ、明るく、すっきりとデザインされたブロードウェイ・マーケット店の方は、ゆったりしていて、ゆっくり本が探せる。

When we went to l’eau à LA BOUCHE on Broadway Market, we found a new art bookshop “Artwords Bookshop” on the same street. Artwords Bookshop is the specialist for books, magazines and videos on the contemporary visual arts. There is its first shop on Rivington Street in Shoreditch, near Rivington Place. In compare to the tiny shop on Rivington street, the one on Broadway Market is more spacious and light with its white interior.

もう１つのロンドンのアート・デザイン系ブックショップは、アーティストやクリエーターなら誰でも知ってるMagma books。クラーケンウェルのClerkenwell RoadとコベントガーデンのEarlham Streetにショップを持ち、コベントガーデン店の数軒先に、デザイン雑貨のセレクトショップもある。またロンドン以外に、マンチェスターに店舗がある他、オンライン・ショッピングも展開している。私たちは、家から近くて、店も広くて、客が少ないクラーケンウェルのショップに、たまに行く。

Another art & design book shop in London is Magma books, the famous shop that any artists and creators know. There is a shop on Clerkenwell Road in Clerkenwell, as well as on Earlham Street in Covent Garden. Magma also has a design product shop few steps away from the Covent Garden shop on the same street, and also a branch in Manchester as well. We prefer the Clerkenwell shop because it is bigger and less people, and closer from home.

一般的に、これらの小規模独立系書店を取り巻く状況は厳しい。テレグラフ紙の記事によると、昨年、10店のうち1店の独立系書店が閉店。1週間に3店が閉店した計算になるそうだ。不況の影響もあるけれど、それよりも大手スーパーのテスコやアマゾンの安売り価格に太刀打ちできないのが、大きな原因だ。イギリスも日本のように、小売店と出版社が本を定価で売ることを合意した「Net Book Agreement (NBA)」があったが、1995年に廃止され、値下げできる体力のある大手書店やスーパーが断然有利になった。また来月イギリスでも発売になるアップル社のiPadなど、電子ブックの普及も大きな痛手になるだろう。

お客は独立系書店に本を買いにくるのではなく、本を品定めだけして、実際は安くで買える大手書店やスーパー、またオンラインで買うのだそうだ。本のバーコードをスキャンすると、最安の価格とショップを割り出してくれるiphoneのアプリ「RedLaser」もある。私たちも急ぎでない限り、本はアマゾンで買うし（ものによると半額ぐらいになる）、iPhoneにはRedLaserもインストールしてある。このような小さな書店の苦境に同情するが、消費者が品揃えが豊富で、値段が安い方に流れるのは仕方がないし、私たちだけが小さな書店で本を買っても、一人の力ではどうしようもない。独立系書店は専門書やなかなか手に入らない本に特化するなど、商品のラインナップに工夫を凝らすか、何かプラスαをつけないと生き残れなくなっている。そして、より多くの人をターゲットに出来るように、オンライン・ショップも必須だ。大変だけれど、時代の変化についていくしかない。

Circumstance of these independent shops is quite tough now in UK. According to an article in the Telegraph, one in 10 independent bookshops closed last year, at a rate of three a week. Recession is one of the reason, but the evils that let these small shops go bust are the big retailers such as Tesco or Amazon that sell largely discounted book. After the abolition of the Net Book Agreement (NBA) in 1995, which was an arrangement between publishers and booksellers that ensured books could not be offered at discounted prices (I believe Japan still has similar rule), the big retailers can cut the price big with the selling and negotiation power with the publishers and have been in much better positions than small bookshops. Emerging of e-book market and electronic book readers, including Apple’s iPad, could be a final blow to them.

Customers come to a bookshop to find what they want, but buy with cheaper price at a big bookshop, supermarket or online. iPhone app “RedLaser” lets you scan a book’s bar code and find the cheapest price. We also buy books at Amazon if the price is much cheaper and when we are not in hurry, and RedLaser is on our iPhone as well. I feel sorry for the small shops, but it is capitalism that customers go for cheaper prices, and we can’t help these shops by buying books from them, if we are alone. There are not much choice for the small independent shops to survive – either to specialize in one area such as Magma or Artwords, to stock up rare books that are not easy to find, or to give an extra service that other shops don’t. Also going online is a must to reach out to more customers. Unfortunately, the time has changed and small business has to adopt it…
