HEL YES! Design and Food from Helsinki: London Design Festival 2010

家の近所に、何度も描いては上描きされてきた、グラフィティのメッカ？がある。元はRentokilの倉庫だったこの建物、David Choeの作品が描かれていた時にブログに書いたが（過去エントリー）、その後、銃のアウトラインの中に地図を画いた、PURE EVILの「MURDER MILE」が取って代わり、少し前に、新しい作品を描いている場面に遭遇したので、写真を撮った。いつものグラフィティかと思ったら、普段は閉まっている建物に人が出入りしている。新しいギャラリーかお店がオープンするのかと疑問に思っていたが、9月14日、Daily Candyのニュースレターで、その謎がついに解けた。

There is a Mecca for Graffiti artists near our home, where several graffitis overpainted by the new one on the former Rentokil depot. Since I talked about David Choe‘s work last year (past entry), PURE EVIL’s MURDER MILE took over the space, and recently I photographed someone working on the new project. I thought it was just another graffiti, but since then there had been people coming in and out from this normally empty building, and we were expecting an opening of a new gallery or shop. Then on September 14, the mystery was solved, by Daily Candy’s daily newsletter.

London Design Festivalの一環として、フィンランド最高の食とデザインを紹介するレストラン＆展示スペース「HEL YES!」が、9月15日から10月3日までの水曜から日曜日の14日間という期間限定でオープンしたのだ。ヘルシンキで人気のレストラン「Ateljé Finne」や「Kuurna」を手がけるAntto MelasniemiとFinnish Instituteがロンドン・デザイン・フェスティバルのために企画、イギリスで活躍するイラストレーターのKlaus Haapaniemi（クラウス・ハーパニエミ）とアート・ディレクター＆コンセプトデザイナーのMia Walleniusなどが加わって作り上げた。Iittala（イッタラ）とArtek（アルテック）が特製の家具や照明、食器などを用意。またその他の照明デザインや、家具、制服なども、フィンランドのデザイナーが特別に製作した。

家も近いし、フィンランド料理なんてあんまりお目にかかることがないので、行ってみたいなと思ったけれど、既に期間中の予約は一杯、写真を撮るだけで終わった。食事しなくても、中の見学や、コーヒーやドリンクの注文は出来るそう。昨日書いたWenlock Armsの目と鼻の先、またVictoria Miro Galleryも近いので、期間中近くに来ることがあれば、３つセットでお試しあれ。

As a part of the London Design Festival, “HEL YES!“, a temporary restaurant and exhibition showcasing the best Finnish food and design, opens just 14 days, Wednesday to Sunday from September 15 to October 3. The Finnish Institute and Antto Melasniemi who manages Helsinki’s popular restaurants “Ateljé Finne” and “Kuurna“, planned and created together with UK-based fashion illustrator Klaus Haapaniemi, an art director & concept designer Mia Wallenius and others. Iittala and Artek supplied exclusive customized furniture, lighting and tableware, and the lighting design, furniture and staff uniforms were designed exclusively for HEL YES! by leading Finnish contemporary designers.

We wanted to make a reservation since it is nearby, and it is a rare occasion to try Finnish food, but this temporary restaurant is fully booked during the period – so we just took some photos. But HEL YES! is open without booking for viewing, coffee and drinks. It is just few steps away from the Wenlock Arms I wrote yesterday, and the Victoria Miro Gallery is around the corner – why don’t you try these three as a set, if you are around during the event?

Habitat ‘Coppa’ Floor Uplight

リビングの中二階に置いていたフロアライトが故障してから、はや2ヶ月。テーブルライトを本棚の上に置いて代用していたが、なんせ暗すぎる。でも気に入ったライトがなくて、ずーっと不便していたのだが、前に目を付けていたけれどずっと売り切れ中だった、Habitatの「Coppa」（£99）が再入荷したので、早速Habitatのネットショップで購入。今日品物が届いた。

マットな白にコーティングされた金属製で、背丈は180cm。明るさは、スライド式のスイッチで調節可能。上下対称のデザインが、ピンと伸ばした糸電話みたいで可愛い。ちょっとぶつかったりなんかしたら、簡単に倒れそうだけれど、台部分が小さくて、場所を取らないのもいい。

I’s been about 2 months since our floor light on the mezzanine broke. We had been using table light temporarily, putting on the top of a book shelf, but it was too dark. We had been looking for a new floor light but we couldn’t find what we really like. But the those dark days are finally over today! Finally, Habitat‘s ‘Coppa‘ (£99), which we saw in the store but it was only display model and was sold out, has come back in stock after many weeks. We ordered on Habitat’s web shop right away, and received it just today.

The dimmerable floor light is in powder coated metal, and 180cm in height. Its vertically symmetrical shape is very cute, and reminds me of a tin can telephone made of paper cups that I used to play with when I was a kid. The base is small and it looks that it may fall quite easily when we accidentally bump into it, but I like it as it doesn’t take too much space.

Mariscal: Drawing Life @ Design Museum

デザイン・ミュージアムで開催中の、スペイン人デザイナー・アーティスト、ハビエル・マリスカル（Javier Mariscal）の回顧展「Mariscal: Drawing Life」が11月1日で終了する。1992年のバルセロナ・オリンピックの公式マスコット「コビー（Cobi）」のデザインで世界的に有名になったマリスカルの、30年以上に渡る多彩な創作活動が一堂に集められた、スペイン人らしい、実にカラフルで楽しい展覧会だ。1950年にバレンシアに生まれ、1970年以来バルセロナにベースを置くマリスカルの活動範囲は実に幅広く、創作活動なら何でも来い状態。「Mariscal: Drawing Life」では、マルチタレントであるマリスカルの、デザインベースであるドローイングやイラストレーションの他、絵画や彫刻、漫画のキャラクター、家具、照明、グラフィック・デザイン、コーポレート・アイデンティティ、家具などのインテリアデザイン、テキスタイル、造園、映像、写真等々、さまざまな作品が展示されている。

マリスカルは、1989年にEstudio Mariscalを設立、世界に名だたるデザイナーや建築家等とのプロジェクトを手がけてきた。著名建築家、設計者19名が各フロアをデザインして話題を呼んだ、2005年オープンのマドリッドの高級ホテル「ホテル・プエルタ・アメリカ」では、フェルナンド・サラス（Fernando Salas）とともに11階を担当。スペインの靴ブランド、Camper（カンペール）のバッグコレクション「Camper For Hands（カンペール・フォー・ハンズ）」のロゴタイプやグラフィックも手がけ、2003年9月に開店したカンペール表参道店も設計・デザインした。また、1991年から94年まで発行されていた日本のタウン誌・apo（アポ、S.S.コミュニケーションズ）のマリスカルの表紙デザインも見ることができる。

彼の、絶妙のカラーコーディネーション、奇抜なデザイン、ヘタウマ調のイラストは、時に騒々しいけれど、妙にほっとさせ、ハッピーな気分になる。まるで、真っ青な空に燦々と照る、スペインの太陽のようだ。

The first UK retrospective of Spanish designer and artist Javier Mariscal, “Mariscal: Drawing Life” at Design Museum will finish soon in November 1. This exhibition put Mariscal’s works over 30 years together on the same floor, and is extremely colorful and fun. Born in 1950 in Valencia and based in Barcelona since 1970, multi-talented Mariscal have produced a wide variety of works – anything creative. ‘Cobi‘, the official Olympic mascot he designed for the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, made his name worldly recognized.  Mariscal: Drawing Life presents his major works in all kinds of medium, raging from drawing and illustration which are the basis for his designs, to painting, sculpture, cartoon characters, interior design such as furniture and lighting, graphic design including corporate identity and typography, textiles, landscaping, films, photographs and so on.

He opened the Estudio Mariscal in 1989 and has collaborated in several projects with famous designers and architects. His most notable works include Hotel Puerta América in Madrid (opened in 2005), a project in which the best architecture and design studios of the moment participated. Estudio Mariscal and Fernando Salas were responsible for the interior design of the eleventh floor. He is in charge of the logotype and graphic for the new brand of bags for Camper, “Camper For Hands, ” and designed a Camper shop in Omotesando, Tokyo in September 2003.

Mariscal’s superb combinations of colors, innovative designs, and his very original style of “out-of-shape” illustrations, often noisy but at the same quite relaxing as well – it is like a bright Spanish sun in a clear blue sky.

100% Design London @ Earl’s Court

今日は、100％ Design Londonの初日。100% Designとは、コンテンポラリー・インテリアと建築の国際見本市。9月19日〜26日まで開催中の、London Design Festival（ロンドン・デザイン・フェスティバル）の一環。1995年にロンドンのキングスロード沿いに設営された小さなテントでスタートし、今では世界でもっとも影響力をもつトレードショーの一つに成長した。現在は、ロンドンの他に、東京と上海でも開催されている。100% Design Londonは毎年、アールズ・コート展示センターで開催されており、27日（日）の一般公開に先駆け、木〜土曜日は業界やメディア関係者のみが入場できる（学生は土・日入場可）。といっても、招待制ではなくて登録はウェブ上での自己申告制なので、結構誰でも登録できたりする。事前に登録しておけば、入場料は無料だ。100% Designは、コアのインテリア見本市である100% Design、革新的で持続可能な建築資材を扱う100% Detail, 最先端の素材を展示する100% Materials、そして若手デザイナーの作品を紹介する100% Futuresと、4つのセクションに分かれている。

100％ Designには過去2〜3回行ったが、少し無秩序な感は否めない。トレンドを取り入れた、見ていて楽しい製品も多いのだが、巨大なコンベンションセンターに、出展者を無造作に放り込んだ感じで、高級そうな家具やインテリアからカジュアルなものまで一緒くた。また壁紙の横に照明、その横に家具のブースと、今いち系統だって展示されていない。また厳密には、私たちは商売相手を捜しに行くと言う意味での業界関係者ではないので、いろいろじっくり見たくても、出展者の方々に話しかけられるのが怖くて、そそくさと通り過ぎてしまう。別館の100% Futuresは、照明が薄暗く、広いスペースの割に出展が少なくて、少し寂しい感じだった。一番盛況なのは、出展と全く関係のない、ドリンクを供するバーエリア。飲んべえの国イギリスらしい。

Today was the first day of 100％ Design London. 100% Design is the architecture and design event showcasing everything for the modern building and interior, and a part of London Design Festival opening from September 19 – 26. Starting with a small ‘tent’ on King’s Road in 1995, 100% Design has grown as one of the most influential interior and architecture trade show in the world. Outside London, there are also the same name events in Tokyo and Shanghai. 100% Design London is annually held at Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre, and it is open to trade and media from Thursday and to public on Sunday only (Students can attend on Saturday and Sunday). The show is not invitations only, and you can register online. The definitions of “trade and media” is a bit broader than you think, and you can attend the show as long as you are related to interior, architecture, or design in some way. If you registered before certain date, you can attend the show free if you are in a category of “trade and media”. 100% Design London features interiors show 100% Design, innovative and sustainable architectural products event 100% Detail, cutting-edge materials exhibition 100% Materials and emerging talent showcase 100% Futures.

We went to 100% Design two or three times. I enjoyed looking at new interior designs with latest trend, but I can’t deny the idea that the show is a bit disorderly – it is like they put all exhibitors in a huge building without clear order. Something like a furniture booth next to lighting, or exhibitors of wallpaper and small objects side by side. In addition, strictly saying, we are ‘trade’ who came to look for a trade partners, therefore, we were kind of fast to go through even though we wanted to see carefully, so that we didn’t get caught by exhibitors. 100% Futures in adjacent building looked sad as not enough exhibitors to fill up the vast space with dim light. The most lively booth was the bar counter – it is pretty typical in UK.

そして、100% Designの後は、V&Aで開かれたロンドン・デザイン・フェスティバルのカクテル・パーティへ。DJブースが併設された館内は、協賛のヴーヴ・クリコのシャンパンやカクテル、カナッペがゲストに振る舞われ、デザインやアート関係者でごったがえしていた。ライトアップされたV&Aの中庭は、とても幻想的で素敵。デザイン関係のパーティらしく、カラフルな椅子を組み合わせてアーチ状にしたオブジェが気が利いている。

After 100% Design, the next destination was London Design Festival party at V&A. The party with funky DJ and generous Veuve Clicquot champaign and canapés was full of design and art people. The courtyard was lit up and quite atmospheric. The crossed arches in the centre of the garden were made of colorful chairs – pretty ‘designy’.
