Wanted: Housekeeping Assistant for Buckingham Palace

10月21・22日付のTelegraph（テレグラフ）紙やSky Newsで、エリザベス女王や王室に仕えるハウスキーピング・アシスタント（所謂メイド）募集が、王室公式ウェブサイトに掲載されたとの報道があった。王室メンバーやゲスト用ベッドルーム52室、大広間19室、78ものバスルームを含む部屋数775室を誇り、年間5万人の貴賓やゲストが訪れる、世界で最も有名な王宮であるバッキンガム宮殿で働けるなんて、滅多にないチャンス。しかも王室のマナーやエチケットを学べ、履歴書の超目玉にもなる。申し込み締め切り日はあいにく10月26日だったらしいが、約1200人もの従業員を擁する王室のウェブサイトの求人情報には、随時求人が掲載されている。

私たち日本人＝外国人には縁のない仕事だと思うけれど、女王陛下に仕えるメイドとは、どんな待遇でどんな仕事内容なのか見てみるのも面白い。給料は、週40時間労働で年£14,200（約182万円）、週換算だと£273（約35000円）。食事と寝室は無料提供される。広告（下の画像）には多くの仕事内容がリストアップされているが、要はレベルの高い掃除、骨董品や調度品のお手入れ、そして来客のお世話等々。年間3ヶ月は、女王のお供で、バルモラル城、サンドリンガム・ハウス宮殿（Sandringham）、ウィンザー城など他の宮殿に滞在しなければならない。適性として、フレンドリーで礼儀正しく几帳面、高いタイムマネジメントスキルを持ち、仕事に優先順位をつける事ができ、信頼に足り、時間に正確、そしてハイスタンダードのサービスやケアを供する事ができなければならないという。メイドと言えどさすが王室、かなりハードルが高い。一体どんな人が合格したのか見てみたいものだ。

According to the news on Telegraph (Oct 21) and Sky News (Oct 22), the Queen put an advert on the official website of the British Monarchy, looking for housekeeping assistant who works for her. It is a great experience, working at the Buckingham Palace, the most popular royal residence in the world where more than 50,000 people visit each year, with 775 rooms including 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 19 state rooms and 78 bathrooms. You can learn royal etiquettes, and it will be a great addition to your CV or résumé, or at least, you have so many things to talk to your friends & family. Interested? Unfortunately, the application deadline was October 26 and it was too late. However, the monarchy employes around 1,200 people, and you can check the vacancies online for other jobs.

It is interesting to see what you would get and what you would do, if you could get the job. The wage is £273@week or £14,200@year for 40-hours@week labour, and food and accommodation is provided. There is a long lists of tasks on the advert (see the job description below), but in short, the post-holder is responsible for “high-quality cleaning, presentation and guest care,” and is required to travel to other Royal residences such as Balmoral, Sandringham, and Windsor, for three months of the year. She (or he?) must: be friendly, polite and meticulous; possess good time management skills; be able to prioritise tasks; be reliable; be punctual; and commit to maintaining and providing the highest standards of service and care. I would really want to see who got this job!

Queeen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration @ V&A

先日のエリザベス女王の即位60周年・Diamond Jubilee（ダイアモンド・ジュビリー）に伴い、「Queeen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration」展が本日よりヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）で始まった（〜4月22日）。この展覧会では、王室写真家であったセシル・ビートンが1939〜68年の間に撮影したエリザベス女王の写真、ビートンの日記や手紙など、1万8千点に及ぶV&Aコレクションの中からより選られた、滅多に目に触れない貴重な写真を含む計100点（うち写真60点）が展示されている。

ビートンは、エリザベス女王の母であるQueen Motherを撮影していた縁で、クイーン・マザーによって女王に推薦され、1942年から約30年間に渡り、戴冠式を含む様々な機会に女王の写真を撮影した。しかし1960年に女王の妹・マーガレット王女と結婚したスノードン伯爵アンソニー・アームストロング＝ジョーンズが王室写真家に就任、そのキャリアは70年代後半に終わった。

以前ハリウッドやファッション業界で約20年働いたビートンは、王室メンバーをより良く見せるために写真に修正を加えていたそうだ。これらのポートレートは、外国に王室のイメージを高める目的で撮影されるものだから、それも理解できる。

展覧会は、装飾を施した背景にクイーン・マザーや少女時代のエリザベス王女を撮影したビートンの初期の作品（彼は舞台デザイナーでもあった）に始まって、4人の子供たちや夫との家族写真や女王としての公式写真など、時系列で並べられている。第二次世界大戦中に爆撃によってダメージを受けたバッキンガム宮殿のコンタクトプリントなど、珍しい物も。ハイライトは1953年の戴冠式で、貴重なカラー写真や儀式の映像と共に専用の展示室に展示されている。最後は、David Bailey（デーヴィッド・ベイリー）やアーヴィング・ペン等の写真家によって撮影された、ビートン自身の写真で締めくくられている。

数部屋だけの小粒な展覧会だが、その洗練され美しい写真（修正を施されているにしろ）から、王女、女王、そして母と、それぞれの人生のステージにおけるエリザベス女王の異なった表情が垣間みれる、素敵な展覧会だと思う。

Corresponding to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee the day before yesterday, V&A’s new exhibition “Queeen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration” started today (until April 22). This exhibition displays a collection of portraits of the Queen, taken by photographer Cecil Beaton from 1939 to 1968, as well as film clips, Beaton’s diaries and letters. 100 images (of 60 are photographs) are chosen out of almost 18,000 in the V&A collection, including a number of photographs rarely seen.

Beaton initially photographed the Queen Mother, who recommended him to her daughter. He had a 30-year relationship with the Queen since 1942, and photographed her on numerous occasions including the Coronation. However, his career as a royal photographer ended in the late 70s, when the job was taken by Antony Armstrong-Jones (later Lord Snowdon), who married the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret in 1960.

Beaton, who had worked in Hollywood and in fashion for 20 years previously, used the touching-up skills to make the royals look their best – because the main objective of royal portraits is to promote the royal family around the world.

The exhibition starts with Beaton’s early works of the Queen Mother and the sweet images of the teenage Princess in glittering theatrical backgrounds (he was a theatre set designer as well), and then goes on in a chronological order; tender portraits with her four children and her husband and later minimalistic official portraits, as well as glittering photographs of the Coronation in 1953 including rare colour footage as well as ceremonial film, which is the highlight of the exhibition. The collection also includes never-before-seen contact sheets of scenes such as wartime bomb damage at Buckingham Palace. The exhibition concludes with a small display of images of Beaton, taken by other photographers including David Bailey and Irving Penn.

This is a small exhibition with few rooms, but those images are beautiful and elegant (though touched up a bit), and shows us intimate portraits of the Queen in different phase of her life as princess, queen and mother.

Castles in Kent: Leeds Castle

ロンドンの南東に位置するケント州は、一番端のドーバーやマーゲートでも車で2時間弱と、ロンドンからの日帰りや短期旅行にぴったりの場所。英仏海峡トンネルを渡ってやってくるヨーロッパ人も多く、私たちが訪れた時も、駐車場には、オランダやドイツ、ベルギーナンバーの車がたくさん停まっていた。お隣の国なのに、意外にフランス人は少ない。恐らくこの肌寒いイギリスじゃなく、どこかのビーチで寝転がって、肌でも焼いているのかな。

今回の小旅行の最初の訪問地は、イングランドで最も美しい明媚なお城の一つで、「loveliest castle in the world（世界で最も美しいお城）」とも称されるLeeds Castle（リーズ城）。湖に浮かぶ2つの島にまたがるこのお城は紀元1119年に建立、多くの王室や貴族の住まいとして、また要塞、刑務所、病後療養所としても使用された。最後の私的所有者であったLady Baillie（レディ・ベイリー）は、1926年にリーズ城を購入したのち、インテリアを全面的に改装し、優雅なお屋敷に生まれ変わらせた。

敷地内はお城や庭園の他、お城が一望できるレストランやカフェ、ショップ、世界中から集められた100種以上の鳥が見られる飼鳥園、洞窟のあるmaze（迷路庭園）、イギリス唯一の犬の首輪博物館、子供の遊び場、ワイン用ブドウ園、果てはゴルフコースまである。ただ、ゴルフコースがお城のすぐ横にあるのはいただけない。また湖上からお城を眺められるBlack Swan（黒鳥：このお城のシンボルでもある）フェリーボートや、入口からお城を結ぶElsie（エルシー）castle trainもあり、いようと思えば一日中いられるほど盛りだくさんなだけに入場料も高く、大人一人 £18.50なり。私たちはお城と庭園以外は興味がないけれど、手入れの行き届いたこの美しいお城は高額の入場料に値する。

Kent is a county situated in southeast of London. To reach the furthest towns such as Dover and Margate takes less than two hours from central London, and it is perfect place for a day excursion and a short trip for Londoners. There are also many European tourists coming through Channel Tunnel, and we saw many cars from Netherlands, Germany and Belgium around there. Not many from closest neighbor France – probably French would prefer lying down on the beach and getting tan to going around chilly and cloudy British isle.

The first stop for our trip this time is the Leeds Castle, setting on two islands and one of England’s most picturesque castles, often described as the ‘loveliest castle in the world.’ Dating back to 1119,  it has been home to royalty and nobles, as well as being used as a garrison, a prison, and a convalescent home. The last private owner of the castle was Lady Baillie, who purchased it in 1926 and refurbished its interior to transform the castle into an elegant country residence. She generously opened this gorgeous residence to the public in 1976.

Other than the magnificent castle and beautiful garden, the castle grounds have many other attractions, though some of which are not of our interests: a restaurant, kiosks and souvenir shops; an aviary housing over 100 species of birds from all over the world; a maze with a grotto; UK’s only museum of dog collars; kids’ playgrounds; its own vineyard; and even a golf course, though it is ugly to see it right next to the castle. There are also the Black Swan (a symbol of this castle) ferry boat and the ‘Elsie’ castle train that connects the main entrance and the castle, for alternative ways to explore the estate. All these attractions don’t come cheap – £18.50@adult. We are only interested in the castle and garden,but it is worth to pay up the high price to see this beautiful castle and its estate well taken care of.

Kensington Palace & Orangery

先日、入場券を2枚持っていた友人にご招待いただいて、ケンジントン宮殿に行ってきた。この日は風は少しあったけれど、春らしい日差しの気持ちの良い日で、宮殿も心なしかいつもより綺麗に見えた。ロンドンは天気が悪いととても陰鬱な感じのだが、お天気だと打って変わって魅力的に見えるから面白い。

ケンジントン・ガーデンズ内にあるケンジントン宮殿は、17世紀からイギリス王室の居住地となっていて、生前のダイアナ妃が新婚時から離婚し、若くして事故で亡くなるまで、ここに住んでいたことで知られている。今は、グロスター公爵リチャード、ケント公爵息マイケル王子夫妻など、王位継承権とはほど遠いマイナーな王族が住んでいて、ハリー王子の非公式の住居にもなっている。現在、2012年完成を目処に、1200万ポンドをかけた改修工事が行われており、敷地内は、所々掘り起こされていたり、植物の植えられていない更地があったりする。

宮殿の一部は一般公開されており、今年3月26日から2012年6月30日まで、Vivienne Westwood（ヴィヴィアン・ウエストウッド）や William Tempestなど、トップ・ファッションデザイナーたちの作品をインスタレーションした「Enchanted Palace」展を開催している。各部屋には、デザイナーたちが制作したドレスや帽子を使ったアート作品やインタラクティブアートが設置され、音響効果とともに、以前その部屋に住んでいた王族のメンバーにまつわるストーリーを物語る。入口では地図と部屋の案内、そして鉛筆を渡され、各部屋をまわりながら、その部屋にゆかりのある7人のプリンセス（王女）の名前を探して、書き込んでいくと言うゲームつき。思い描いていた伝統的な装飾品や家具、衣装の展示等は、不可思議なアート作品に隠れてあんまり見れず。学校のイースター・ホリデー中だったので、小さな子供たちがあちこちにうろうろしていて、宮殿というより、ディズニーランドの魔法の館といった趣。通常の入場料£13.75を払ってまで見たいと思わないけれども、現在も使われている宮殿の一部を見れたのはいい経験だった。イギリスのプリンセスたちに関する知識も増えたしね。

Last week, I visited the Kensington Palace with my friend who had two tickets and offered me one of them. It was a bit windy but pleasant day with warm spring sun, which made the palace look more magnificent than normal. London can be quite depressive when it is cloudy or rainy, but interestingly it looks beautiful when it is sunny.

The Kensington Palace has been a residence of the British Royal Family since the 17th century. It was the official residence of Diana, Princess of Wales since her marriage to Charles, Prince of Wales, even after her divorce until her accidental death in 1997. Now it is the official residence of less known members of the Royal family (The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester; the Duke and Duchess of Kent; and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent), but also used on an unofficial basis by Prince Harry. Currently the palace has been under £12 million renovation project that aims to complete by 2012, and I saw some grounds without plants and grass or some rough areas around the palace buidling.

Some rooms inside the palace are open to the public, and the palace currently hosts a temporary exhibition “The Enchanted Palace” (26 March 2010 to 30 June 2012), featuring the work of top fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood, William Tempest and Stephen Jones. Each room tells a story about one of its former Royal residents, complete with sound effects, interactive exhibits and quirky artworks. A visitor is given a map with information of the rooms and a pencil, and looks for a name of seven princesses who used to live in the palace, while walking through the rooms. I expected to see the Royal palace with traditional and glorious decoration and furniture, but all these are hidden behind weird installations. It was during the school Easter holidays and small kids were all over the place, and the palace looked like the Magic Kingdom in the Disneyland, rather than the Royal palace. Though I am not sure if it worths an adult admission of £13.75, but it was a good experience to visit the Royal palace which is still in use. I also learned more about British princesses.

宮殿見学の後は、敷地内にあるOrangeryでお茶。1705年にアン女王の命により建設されたOrangery（オランジェリー：オレンジの木を栽培する温室）では、朝食やランチ、ケーキ類のほか、アフタヌーン・ティー（£14.85〜£33.75。2010年4月19日現在）が気軽に楽しめる。また紅茶類も豊富で、フレーバーを決めるのに迷ってしまう（ティーバッグとルーズリーフがあるので、こだわりのある方はメニューをチェックして）。温室だっただけあって、天井が高く陽当たりが良くて、とても気持ちがいい。天気がいい日は外にもテーブルが並ぶ。前に広がるお庭も、綺麗に手入れされている。

After visiting the palace, we had a cup of tea at the Orangery, which Queen Anne built in the grounds of Kensington Palace in 1705. You can enjoy afternoon tea (£14.85〜£33.75) as well as breakfast, lunch, and cakes. The Orangery also offers one of the finest tea selections in London with over ten different flavours to enjoy. Sitting in this former greenhouse with high ceiling and nice sunshine coming through large windows is quite nice and relaxing. On a sunny day, it is a good idea to get a table outside, overlooking a peaceful garden.

Prince William Slept Rough on the Street Last Week

ウィリアム王子が先週、ロンドンのBlackfriars bridge（ブラックフリアーズ橋）の近くで、ホームレス体験とホームレス問題に対する認知を高めるため、路上で一晩を過ごした。子供の頃、母である故ダイアナ妃にお忍びでホームレス慈善団体のCentrepoint（センターポイント）に連れられたことがきっかけで、成長してからCentrepointの後援者となった。王子は、チャリティの責任者（写真上）とともに零下の中、ゴミ用トローリーに囲まれ、寝袋の中で夜12時から朝6時まで過ごした。その後は、ウエスト・エンドのホームレスの若者が多く夜を過ごす場所の視察をされた。寝ている間、王子たちに気づかなかった道路清掃車にひかれそうになって、ひやっとしたそうだ。日本では王子が1泊でも路上生活するなんて考えられない。過剰保護されている日本の皇室とは比べ物にならないぐらい、イギリスの王室はオープンで自由なのだ。

ホームレスチャリティのHomeless Linkの統計によると、昨年ロンドンでは、路上で睡眠を取った人が一晩あたり239人（イングランド統計483人のうち49％）。この数は、ホームレスチャリティやボランティアのおかげで、10年前の約半数になった。内訳は87％が男性で、13％が女性。62％が26〜45歳、30％が46歳以上、そして7％が25歳以下。41％に薬物問題、49％にアルコール問題、35％に精神疾患が見られた（重複あり）。15％のみ、この3つの問題のどれもなかった。政府のホームレス対策に呼応して作られた委員会であるThe London Delivery Boardは、2012年（ロンドン・オリンピック開催年）までに、ホームレスをなくすと掲げている。

慈善活動は、イギリス王室の重要な活動の１つだ。ウィリアム王子も、慈善活動に熱心な両親の影響で、少年時代から色々な活動に興味を示してきた。母親のエイズ救援・防止活動、そして父親の自然保護や恵まれない人々への活動は、王子に同じ分野での活動を促した。彼はまた、アフリカ支援にも興味を持っており、弟であるヘンリー王子（イギリスではハリーと呼ばれる）の慈善団体・Sentebaleにも時折参加している。こう書いていると至極品行方正に聞こえる王子たちであるが、ご心配なく。プライベート・ライフは楽しく過ごしているようだ。以前は、王子兄弟が（とその従姉妹のベアトリーチェ王女とユージーン王女）、Mahiki（マヒキ）やBoujis（ブージズ）、 Whisky Mist（ウィスキーミスト）等、ポッシュ(Posh、気取った)なナイトクラブに出入りしている姿が、よくロンドンのフリーペーパーを賑わわせていた（下の写真は酔っぱらった王子とガールフレンドのケイト・ミドルトン）。最近はあまりお遊びの写真は見かけないけれど、二人とも大人になったのか、それとも、行き過ぎたパパラッチ行為には法的措置も持さないと言う、エリザベス女王の警告が効いたのか？

Prince William spent one night sleeping rough on the streets near Blackfriars bridge in London last week, to experience being homeless and to raise awareness in homelessness. He was taken by his mother, late Princess Diana, on a secret visit to a Centrepoint shelter when he was a child, and the experience led him to become a patron of homeless charity Centrepoint when he grew up. He slept in a sleeping bag in sub-zero temperatures together with the charity’s chief executive (photo above), next to the wheelie bins, from 12 am to 6 am. Then he went on a tour of the West End to see where many young homeless people were sleeping. He and his company were almost run over by a road sweeper which didn’t see them. It is inconceivable in Japan that one of the princes sleeps on the street without roof, even for one night. British Royal family is incredibly open and free, in compare to the overprotected Japanese Royal family.

According to the key facts by Homeless Link, 239 people sleeping rough on any given night counted last year in London (49% of the England total 483); which is half the level that it was ten years ago, thanks to an effort by a number of homeless charities and its volunteers. 87% were male and 13% were female. 62% were aged between 26 and 45, 30% were aged over 46, and 7% were under age 25. Among the homeless people, 41% had drug problems, 49% had alcohol problems, and 35% had mental health problems (people may be counted in more than one category); 15% had neither drug, alcohol or mental health problems. The London Delivery Board, a group of voluntary agencies and statutory bodies, aims to eliminate rough sleeping in London by 2012, the year of London Olympic.

To involve in a charity activity is an important Royal duty in UK. Prince William took interest in various causes from an early age, with an influence from his parents who have been also active in charity. His mother’s work with HIV/AIDS aid and prevention, and his father’s work with the natural environment and the inner-city disadvantaged, directed him into those areas. He also showed a desire to focus on the needy in Africa, and sometimes works with his brother Prince Harry‘s charity, Sentebale. How nice and touching. But don’t worry, the princes also have a nice life and like to party as well. I used to see photographs of the Royal brothers (and their cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie), coming out from some posh night clubs such as Mahiki, Boujis and the Whisky Mist, all over the London’s free papers a while ago (photo below is Prince William obviously drunk with his girlfriend Kate Middleton in 2007) – but I rarely see recently. Maybe because they grew up and become mature, or the warning by the Queen, that “the Royal Family stands ready to take legal action against harassment and intrusion by paparazzi”??
