HOMA Restaurant @ Stoke Newington Church Street

今週は珍しく晴れ続き、久しぶりにStoke Newingtonまで足を伸ばして、HOMAでランチした。白い壁にカントリー風木製テーブル＆椅子、吊り下げられたレトロなランプシェードも可愛い。ランチとディナーの狭間だからか、客は私たちだけで、静かでとてもリラックスした雰囲気。

メニューには、種類はそう多くないが、オーガニックで地元産の旬の食材を主に使用した、イタリアン＆地中海風の料理が並ぶ。コーヒー豆はブロードウェイ・マーケットにある名店・Climpson and Sonsのもの。環境にも配慮、テイクアウト用のフォークやスプーン、食材のパッケージは、再生品で、使用後は堆肥にできるもののみを使用しているそう。

あいにくランチタイムが終わったところで、オーダーできるのはピザのみ。ピッツァ・マルゲリータ＋追加のアンチョビが、何故かチョリソ・ピッツァ＋目玉焼きに化けたのがご愛嬌だが、生地はパリッとしていて、トッピングもフレッシュ、味は悪くない。半熟の卵はピッツァにはやはりあわないと思うのだが、申し訳なさ気なスタッフによると、フランス人が時々卵のトッピングをリクエストするのだそう。お詫びでドリンクが無料になったのも、誠実な対応で好感度大。

It has been sunny these days, so we stretched our destination to Stoke Newington and had lunch at HOMA. The interior is very cute, with white walls, rusty wooden tables & chairs, and retro lamp shades. It was in between lunch and dinner time, and we were the only customers there, and we enjoyed its peaceful and relaxing space all by ourselves.

Their menu is rather small, but their Italian and Mediteranean dishes are made of fresh and seasonal ingredients, and organic and locally produced sources wherever possible. Their coffee is from renown Climpson and Sons in Broadway Market. They also care environment and use only recycled compostable food packaging and catering disposables, such as takeaway fork and spoons.

Unfortunately, only pizza was available when we went after lunch time was over. For some reason, we got chorizo pizza with egg on top, instead of pizza margherita with extra anchovies (interesting misunderstanding). But it was not bad after all, as pizza crust was crunchy and the toppings were fresh. I am afraid to say that egg didn’t go well with pizza, but French people sometimes request egg topping, according to an apologetic staff. It was also nice of her to made our drinks complimentary – very favorable response to the mistake.

Central Saint Giles Designed by Renzo Piano

イタリア人建築家・Renzo Piano（レンゾ・ピアノ）がデザインし、2010年5月に完成したCentral Saint Giles。レンゾ・ピアノのイギリス初の作品となったこのビル群は、オフィス、住居、ショップ＆レストランの商業スペースを兼ね揃えた複合施設で、外側は13万4千もの光沢のあるテラコッタ・タイルで覆われている。日本の三菱地所も出資しているというこのビル、Tottenham Court Road（トッテナム・コート・ロード）駅東側という好立地ということもあり、住居部分は、ロンドンでの拠点にするため、またロンドンで勉強する子女の住居として、主に香港、シンガポール、マレーシア人に買われたらしい。建物には、屋上緑化をはじめ、環境に優しい様々な仕掛けが施されており、バイオマス・ボイラーは80％の暖房と温水をまかない、冷却タワーから排出される水は灌漑用、そして水洗トイレに再利用されるそうだ。

商業エリアは、最初はテナントも少なく閑散としていたが、またかのジェイミー・オリバーのブリティッシュ・Union Jackをはじめ、ハンバーガー店・Byron、ブラジルのストリートフード・Cabana、イタリアンのZizzi（味はファミレス並みでお勧めしないけど）、スイーツの美味しいカフェ・Peyton & Byrne、そしてヘルシー・ファーストフードを謳うPod（近日オープン）と、チェーン系レストランが徐々にオープン、なかなかの賑わいになった。チェーンばかりであまり特別感はないけれど、ロンドンのど真ん中という立地に加え、レストランは広くて席数が多いので、食事難民になりかけた時に便利かも。

Central Saint Giles is a mixed-use development (residence, office and commercial spaces) on the east of Tottenham Court Road station. Designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano as his first work in UK, the façades of this building complex is covered by 134,000 green, orange, lime and yellow glazed terracotta tiles. Due to its excellent location, many housing units are reported to have been sold to buyers from Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia seeking accommodation for visits to London and for their children who study here. The development has been designed with a number of features intended to reduce its environmental impact: biomass boilers which provide 80% of the heating and hot water; re-use of the water discharged from the cooling tower for irrigation systems and the flushing toilets; planted roof terraces to absorb rainfall.

The commercial spaces were hardly occupied at the beginning, but little by little the spaces have been filled up by restaurants and cafés – Jamie Oliver (again!) ‘s British Union Jack, our favorite hamburger Byron, Brasilian street food Cabana, Zizzi Italian, café with yummy sweets Peyton & Byrne, and ‘healthy’ fast food Pod (opening soon). Mostly chains and nothing special, but the complex is located in the heart of London and the restaurants are large and have lots of seating, so it may be useful when you can’t find any place to eat – or if you are a big fan of Jamie and wants to contribute to his business!

Good Beach Guide 2011 – are UK beaches Clean or Dirty?

イギリスの海水浴場の水質調査を基に、水のきれいなビーチをリストアップしたガイド「Good Beach Guide」2011年版が、今日公開された。Marine Conservation Society（MCS/海洋保全団体）が1987年より発行しているこのガイドは、1960年に作られた海水浴場の「Golden List」に起源を持つ。下水で汚染された海で泳いだ後に、6歳の娘をポリオで亡くしたWakefield（ウェイクフィールド）夫妻は、未処理の下水が海洋投棄されていることに憤りを感じ、このリストを作成した。これが、他の海洋汚染防止キャンペーンとともに、1976年における海水浴場の水質のヨーロッパ基準策定と、下水処理への膨大な投資につながったという。

MCSは、欧州連合のBathing Water Directive（水浴場の水質指導規定）を基に、イギリス国内の782カ所の水質を調査。今年の調査結果によると、昨年に比べて42カ所多い、461カ所が最高レベルの「recommended（推薦）」を取得。24年の発行期間の間で3番目に高い数値となったが、それでも46カ所は最低レベルの「basic pass」さえクリアすることが出来なかった。

35年前に制定されたヨーロッパ法の水質基準の見直しにより、2015年度からより厳格になる予定で、2012年からその監視が始まる。その結果、将来2倍近くのビーチが基準をクリアできなくなる恐れがあるとMCSは危惧する。下水の海洋投棄は未だに合法で、監視が充分に出来ておらず、未処理の下水を放水している回数がチェックできているのは、たった4分の1だけだそう。

汚染された海で泳ぐと、お腹の具合が悪くなったり、目や耳、喉の感染症を引き起こす可能性があるそう。それに未処理の下水が混ざった海で泳ぐなんて、考えただけで気持ち悪い！環境問題にうるさい（と思っていた）イギリスが、まだ海洋投入前の下水処理を義務づけていないなんて、少し驚きだ。イギリスでビーチ・バカンスをお考えの方、「Good Beach Guide 2011 Recommended Beaches」（推奨ビーチリスト）を見てから、行き先決定を。

A comprehensive guide to bathing water quality around the UK, Good Beach Guide 2011 launched today. Published by the Marine Conservation Society(MCS) since 1987, the Guide began life as a ‘Golden List’ of beaches in 1960. Tony and Daphne Wakefield had lost their six-year-old daughter, after she contracted polio swimming at a sewage contaminated beach. Outraged that raw sewage was being pumped into the sea, the Wakefields published a new ‘Golden List’ of clean bathing beaches. This, along with other clean sea campaigns, led to the introduction of European standards for bathing water quality in 1976, and massive investment by the water industry to clean up raw sewage (quoted fromGood Beach Guide).

The MCS tests water quality at 782 sites across the UK, under the EU’s Bathing Water Directive rules. This year’s results suggest that the number of beaches given the top rating was the third highest in its 24-year history: 461 beaches gained its top “recommended” award, 42 more than last year, although 46 sites failed to reach the mandatory minimum level of “basic pass”.

The basic standards of water quality were set in European law 35 year ago, but stricter rules will come into force from 2015 due to the revision of the Bathing Water Directive, and these will start to be monitored from 2012. As a result, the MCS concerns that almost double the number of beaches could fail in future years. It is still legal to pump sewage into the sea and not enough of those outlets were being monitored. Only a quarter are monitored to check how often they are putting untreated sewage into the sea.

Water pollution can give swimmers stomach upsets or ear, nose and throat infections. Also it is disgusting to swim in the sea mixed with water from sewage (I didn’t know it is still legal)!! Hydrogen Bus @ Southbank Mix

Bankside Mix（バンクサイド・ミックス）に最近オープンしたVapianoに行った時に見かけた、Hydrogen Bus（水素バス）。調べてみたら、EUのCUTE（Cleaner Urban Transport for Europe）プロジェクトの一環として、2003〜2007年に試用期間を経て、昨年12月から本格的に運用開始されたという（tfl information / ガーディアン紙記事）。同時に、イギリス最大の水素供給ステーションが東ロンドンのLeytonにオープンした。

ロンドンでは毎年、4300人が大気汚染によって命を落としているという。水素バスは、水蒸気を排出するだけで、大気汚染はゼロ。タンク一杯の水素で、18時間以上運転可能だそうだ。現在、水素バスが走っているRV1ルートは、ロンドン塔、テート・モダン、サウス・バンク・センター、ロンドン・アイ、コヴェント・ガーデンなど、主な観光地を結ぶので、環境に優しい都市・ロンドンをアピールするのにぴったり。環境保護に執念を燃やすボリス・ジョンソン市長は、オリンピックの開催される2012年には、15台の水素タクシーを含む最低150台の水素自動車の導入を目標としている。しかし、水素燃料のタクシーがたったの15台って、少なくない？助成金が出てもコストがかかり過ぎて、この不況の中、個人経営のタクシーには敬遠されるのか。

ちなみにバンクサイド・ミックスのVapianoは、壁一杯の窓から入る太陽光で明るく広々としていて、しかもオープンから間もないせいか客も少なく、ゆったりできる。テート・モダンやバラ・マーケット（周りのレストランはいつも混んでいる）に行くなら、穴場です。

We saw a hydrogen Bus stopping at a bus stop in front of the Bankside Mix, when we went to newly opened Vapiano at the Bankside Mix. After a trial of three hydrogen buses in London between 2003 and 2007 as part of the EU-sponsored CUTE (Cleaner Urban Transport for Europe), the UK’s first permanent hydrogen bus was launched in December 2011 (tfl information / the Guardian article). At the same time, the UK’s largest hydrogen refuelling station opened in Leyton, east London.

It is said that more than 4,300 people lost their lives in London due to poor air quality every year. All that comes out of these hydrogen buses is water vapour and the vehicle can operate for more than 18 hours without refueling. RV1 route, where currently hydrogen buses are operated, connects popular tourist attractions such as the Tower of London, the Tate Modern, the South Bank arts complex, the London Eye and Covent Garden – perfect to appeal ‘clean’ London to visitors. Green-obsessed London mayor Boris Johnson aims to encourage a minimum of 150 hydrogen-powered vehicles on the road by 2012 including 15 hydrogen-powered taxis. Great, but isn’t the number of hydrogen taxis too small? Probably cost conscious self-employed taxi owners don’t want to spend too much money to upgrade to low emission vehicles under this recession, even with some financial incentive from the city government.

By the way, I recommend Vapiano at the Bankside Mix when you go to the Tate Modern or nearby Borough Market where restaurants around are always packed – it is spacious and bright with plenty of sunshine coming through floor-to-ceiling windows, and not many people know it at this moment as opened recently.

Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2010 @ Design Museum

昨日の「Dieter Rams」展の1階下で、デザイン・ミュージアムの新しい展覧会「Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2010」が、今日17日から始まった。今年で3回目を迎えるこの「Brit Insurance Designs Awards」は、世界中から集められた、過去12ヶ月の間に作られた、最も革新的で未来を見据えたデザインの、7部門（建築、ファッション、家具、グラフィックス、インタラクティブ、プロダクト、交通・乗り物）約100点、一堂に展示されている（昨年の展覧会の様子は過去のエントリー参照）。今年の主なテーマは、サステナビリティ（持続可能性）とグローバル、そして日常使いのデザインと社会的メッセージ等。彫刻家のアントニー・ゴームリーがトップを務める審査員パネルによる審査を経て、3月16日に最優秀賞と各部門の受賞者が発表される。候補作品は、designsoftheyear.comブログで見れる。

テート・モダンなど大きな美術館と違ってスペースが限られているので、どうしても多数のデザインを1カ所に押し込んだ感は免れない。しかも7部門もあるので、どこからどこまでがどのカテゴリーなのか境が曖昧で、ちょっと混乱する。もし私が受賞作品を選ぶとしたら、建築部門ではメキシコにあるMonterrey Housing。低コストでも美しい住宅が造れるという良い見本だ。ファッション部門のBoudiccaのReal Girl digital lookbookでは、コレクションが色々な角度から見れるのが良い。PARCSの家具は、遊び心に溢れていながら、組み合わせ次第で形を変えられるのが面白い。グラフィックスは、モダンにデザインされたイギリスのWar Memorial（戦争記念碑）と、スイス・スタイルの定番「Swiss Graphic Design and Advertising by Geigy 1940-1970」の間で迷う。インタラクティブでは、いつもお世話になっているという理由でBBC iPlayer。見逃したテレビ番組をテレビでもウェブでも見れてとても便利。プロダクトでは、味も素っ気もない投票所のイメージを変える、ノルウェーのBlanke Ark。そして交通・乗り物部門は、ホンダのEV-Nが環境に優しく、かつおもちゃのように可愛いので一押し。昨年の最優秀賞は、バラク・オバマの選挙ポスターだったけれど、今年はどの作品が受賞するかな？

Design Museum‘s new exhibition “Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2010” starts today, on one floor below the Dieter Rams exhibition I wrote yesterday. Now in their third year, Design Museum’s annual “Brit Insurance Designs Awards” showcases almost 100 most innovative and forward looking designs in 7 categories (Architecture, Transport, Graphics, Interactive, Product, Furniture and Fashion), produced over the last twelve months and selected from around the world (see my past entry for last year’s exhibition). This year’s focus are projects with sustainability, global themes, and a social message, and objects for everyday use. The winner from each category along with an overall winner will be decided by a select panel of experts, chaired by the sculptor Anthony Gormley, and announced on 16 March. The space is limited, in compare to a big institution such as Tate Modern, and the exhibition gave me an impression that the so many things are squeezes in a small space. Also it maybe a bit greedy to host 7 categories of design in such a limited space, and it is a bit confusing with a border between the categories. Here is my list of the winner, if I had to choose, in each category: Monterrey Housing in Mexico in Architecture proves that a low cost but sophisticated housing is possible. In Fashion, Boudicca‘s Real Girl digital lookbook is quite clever to show the clothes from a variety of angles with its innovative web technology. PARCS in Furniture is quite fun but also functional that the parts can be combined to fit for a need and a space. In Graphics, I am torn apart between UK’s War Memorial with its state-of-the-art design and classic Swiss Graphic Design and Advertising by Geigy 1940-1970. BBC iPlayer for Interactive – it’s very useful that we can see the BBC program we miss either on the internet or on TV anytime, and we use the service quite often. In Product, Norway’s Blanke Ark changes my image of boring and unexciting voting area, and make me feel like going to vote. Lastly, Honda’s EV-N in Transport is ecological but fun and cute. Last year’s winner was the unofficial Barack Obama poster campaign, and what is your guess for the winner of this year?
