Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera @ Tate Modern

テート・モダンで5月28日から始まった「Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera」展（〜10月3日）に行ってきた。日本語で、「公共の目にさらされた／暴かれた：覗き、監視、そしてカメラ」と題されたこの展覧会では、19世紀後半から現在までに撮影された、被写体の許可を得ていないか被写体がカメラに気づいていない、250枚以上の写真を展示。ウィージー、ウォーカー・エバンス、ポール・ストランド、ナン・ゴールディン、ロバート・フランク、アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン、ハリー・キャラハン、日本人では吉行耕平や横溝静、そしてパパラッチなど、有名無名の写真家やアーティスト、写真報道家の手による作品は、隠しカメラやスパイカメラで撮られたもの、被写体に気づかれないように撮影されたもの、セレブや有名人の写真、覗き行為を思わせるエロティックな作品、マフィアによる殺人や自殺、戦争等暴力的なシーンを捉えたもの、航空写真や衛星写真、他人やアーティスト自身の私生活を記録した映像、そして24時間人々の動きを記録する監視カメラによる映像など、多岐に渡る。自分が被写体になっているかも分からず、守られていると思っているプライバシーは実は強固ではない。 見る者をなんとなく無防備な気分にさせ、不安に陥れる。CCTV（監視カメラ）の設置率が人口比で世界一で、「1984年」を著したジョージ・オーウェルを輩出した、プライバシーの侵害に敏感なイギリスらしい展覧会だ。

英メディアの評判はいい。テレグラフ紙、ガーディアン紙は4つ星をつけている。でも、どれもどこかで見たような写真ばかりで、あまり目新しさはない。何故だろう？と考えると、今日のメディアやインターネットでは、この程度のショッキングな写真は日々目にする。刺激に慣れすぎてしまっていて、撮影当時は衝撃的だったろう写真も「この程度」と思ってしまう自分がちょっと怖くなる。

We went to Tate Modern‘s new exhibition, “Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera“, just started on May 28 and runs until October 3. The exhibition features over 250 images by photographers, artists and photojournalists captured on film, not always with the subjects’ knowledge, from the late 19th century to the present day, including work by living or deceased, amateur or professional, known and unknown photographers such as Weegee, Walker Evans, Paul Strand, Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Harry Callahan, Jonathan Olley, and Nan Goldin as well as Paparazzi shots and footage from non-human devices such as surveillance cameras and CCTV. Subjects varies from pictures taken by the ‘unseen’ photographers using hidden cameras and devices such as the lateral viewfinder, photos of celebrity and public figures, sexual or erotic ‘peeping Tom’ images, violent scenes such as Mafia murder, suicide and wars, aerial and satellite photos, records of private lives of artists or others, and CCTV footage that always keep watching people. The exhibition makes us feel insecure and vulnerable – we are all been watched more or less and your privacy is fragile. A perfect exhibition for the UK, where there are reportedly more cameras per person than in any other country in the world, and the country where the novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four‘ was written by George Orwell.

The reputation of the exhibition is quite good – the Telegraph and the Guardian both give four-star rating. However, I was not so impressed. I thought about why, and realize that nowadays these ‘shocking’ photos are out there on media and internet everyday, and probably I got used to it. It is a bit scared to think that I become numb with images once considered horrifying or outrageous…

London 2012 Olympic Mascots Revealed…

今日、2012年にロンドンで行われるオリンピックのマスコットが発表された。子供受けを狙ってデザインされた、このへんてこな形の一つ目のマスコットたちの名前はWenlock（ウェンロック）とMandeville（マンデビル）。五輪スタジアムに使われた鉄製の梁から出た鉄のしずくがコンセプトだそうだ。オリンピックのマスコットであるウェンロックは、19世紀に現代オリンピックの先駆けとなったWenlock Olympian Gamesが開催された、イングランド北西部・Shropshire（シュロプシャー）にある村の名前「Much Wenlock」から命名。一方、パラリンピックのマスコットであるマンデビルという名前は、パラリンピックの誕生の地である、Buckinghamshire（バッキンガムシャー）のStoke Mandeville（ストーク・マンデビル）病院からとられた。イギリス人以外には覚えにくい名前だなあ。イギリス人でも何人の人がこのエピソードを知っているんだろう？ウェンロックは、私の住所の通りの名前なので覚えやすいけれど。

ナチスドイツの鉤十字（ハーケンクロイツ）に似てると噂されている、£400,000かけて作られたオリンピックロゴも散々叩かれたが、マスコットの方も、Creepy（薄気味悪い）だのBloody awful（ヒドすぎる）だのRubbish（クズ）だの、メディアや人々の反応は概して批判的。ガーディアン紙などは、人口比にして世界一の設置率という、悪名高いCCTV（監視カメラ）を彷彿させると皮肉っている。確かに。日本のサイトを見てみると、ゲゲゲの鬼太郎の目玉親父みたいだという意見が多い。クリエイティビティ（創造力）を売りにするロンドンだけに、奇抜さを狙ったのかもしれないが、う〜ん。。。その狙いは当たるのか外れるのか。

1968年グルノーブル冬季オリンピックから始まったオリンピック・マスコットの伝統、1980年のモスクワ・オリンピックのクマのMisha（アニメ「こぐまのミーシャ」の主人公）が商業的に大成功をおさめた最初の例だそう。個人的には、1972年ミュンヘン・オリンピックのマスコット、ダックスフントのバルディー（Waldi）が好きだな（実家の飼い犬がミニチュア・ダックスなのです）。

Today London Olympic 2012 mascots were unveiled. These strange-shaped guys with one eye, targeting young children, are Wenlock and Mandeville. London Olympic committee explains that they are made from drops of steel from girders used in the construction of the 2012 London games. Olympic games mascot Wenlock is named after the village of Much Wenlock in Shropshire, which hosted the Wenlock Olympian Games, a precursor to the modern Olympic games in the 19th Century. Mandeville is a mascot for Paralympic games, and its name comes from Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, the birthplace of the Paralympic Games. I am afraid that these names seem to be quite hard for non-British to remember, and also how many British know these episodes?? I can remember ‘Wenlock,’ as it is the street name of my address.

Swastika looking 2012 Olympic logo, which massively cost £400,000, has been harshly bashed, and media and people’s response towards these mascots are quite harsh as well, such as ‘creepy’ ‘bloody awful’ ‘rubbish’ etc, etc. The Guardian article sarcastically says, “their cyclopean eyes, that may remind many of the lenses of CCTV cameras staring from pretty much every building, station and street corner in the city” – it is quite true, actually. I understand that London has to come up with something edgy, since the city tries to sell itself as ‘creative’ capital of the world, but… It is a huge bet, considering generally negative reactions from the people against olympic logo and mascots.

The idea of the Olympic mascot dates from the winter games held in Grenoble in 1968, and first commercially successful mascot is Misha the bear of 1980 Moscow Olympics. My favorite is the sausage dog Waldi, created for the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics – because my parents’ pet is Miniature Duchshund and I love her :-).

Google Street View launched in UK

３月１９日、Google ストリートビューが、2007年にアメリカで誕生してから、ようやくイギリスにも上陸し、物議を醸している。プライバシーの侵害として、多くの苦情が寄せられ、翌日には、たくさんのストリートビュー写真が取り除かれた。中には、首相官邸のある10 Downing Street（ダウニング街10番地）周辺の写真やセックスショップから出てきた男性の写真や酔っぱらって吐いている男性、また逮捕されるところの写真も含まれるという。グーグルによると、人の顔や車のナンバープレートは99.9%ぼかしているというが、昨日の新聞によると、顔やナンバープレートが識別可能な写真もあるらしい。また、家の持ち主は、強盗に家をストリートビューを使ってチェックされるのではないかと恐れている。

それでも、ストリートビューはこちらでもすごい人気で、多くの人々がすでにサイトにアクセスしている。私もその一人で、アパートの前の通りを見た時は、あまりのクリアさにびっくりした（写真上は、最寄りの地下鉄Angel（エンジェル）駅）。人々の反応は賛否両論で、便利だという人もいれば、もはや「プライバシー」は存在しないと憤る人もいる。私自身は、とてもいいアイデアだと思う。例えば行ってみたいレストランやお店の周りをストリートビューでチェックしておくと、実際に行った時に迷わないでいいと思う。もちろん、家でだらしない格好をしている写真が窓越しに写ってたりしたら、すぐ抗議しますけどね！でも、イギリスはCCTV（監視カメラ）の設置率が人口比で世界一で、外出すると監視カメラに一日何百回も撮られる計算になるらしいから、今更「プライバシー」も何もないような気がするが、CCTVは限られた人にしか見られず、ストリートビューは誰にでも見られるので、心配する人たちの気持ちも分かる。

ちなみにストリートビューはまた、ジョークとして、メリー・ポピンズやシャーロック・ホームズ、ウォーリー（ウォーリーをさがせ！）等のキャラクターの扮装した人の写真もあるので、暇な人は探してみて下さい。

Google launched the controversial Street View in UK on March 19, two years after it appeared in US, and consequently it stirred up the debate of privacy.  The next day, after complaints as a breach of privacy, from homeowners and people which appeared in the photos, Google had to remove many pictures, including photos around 10 Downing street (residence and office of the First Lord of the Treasury and Prime Minister), photos of a man coming out of a sex shop, of a man being arrested, and of a guy throwing up outside a pub. Google insists that ‘99.9%’ of faces and number plates are blurred, but according to the newspaper articles, some faces and car registrations were recognizable as of yesterday. Homeowners are also concerned that the burglars may be able to check their homes.

However, Street View is very popular and ‘hundreds of thousands’ of people had already viewed the street shots of London. People’s opinion is divided — some people think that it is cool and useful — like M — but some are upset for the ‘privacy’ issues. As for me, it is a great invention. I can check the photo around the restaurants or stores I want to go, so I don’t get lost. Of course I will complain to Google if I see myself in a pajama from my window! UK is the number one country in the world where has the most CCTV cameras per person in the world, and you are supposed to be filmed hundreds of time every time you go out, so I am not sure if there is any strict ‘privacy’ on the street in UK. The difference between CCTV and Street View is that CCTV is viewed by only limited number of people whereas Street View can be viewed by anyone — so I understand other people’s concern as well.

Streetview has included a number of people dressed as ‘characters’ as a joke, such as Mary Poppins, Sherlock Homes and Wally (Where’s Wally?), and you can find it if you are bored to death.
