“Treasures of Heaven” Exhibition @ British Museum

中世キリスト教の重要美術品を集めた大英博物館の新しい展覧会「Treasures of Heaven: saints, relics and devotion in medieval Europe」（6月23日〜10月9日）が先週始まった。大英博物館のコレクションに加え、バチカン、ヨーロッパの教会の宝庫、アメリカやヨーロッパの美術館など40以上の団体から集められた、キリストや聖人、殉教者の遺物を納めた聖骨箱など、150以上もの貴重な美術品が展示されている（展示品写真）。大英博物館によると、イギリスでまとまった数の宗教美術品が一堂に見られるのは、イコンの破壊が広く行われた16世紀の宗教改革の時以来だそう。

展示されている主な遺品は、Crown of Thorns（キリストのかぶせられた荊冠）の一部だとされる3本の刺、十字架の一部、聖ブラシウスの足（写真）、聖母マリアの母乳、聖ヨハネの髪の毛、最も古いものの一つであるキリストの自印聖像など。それらが納められている、銀や金細工の施された聖骨箱の素晴らしいこと。後期ローマ帝国時代に始まり約1000年に渡る中世に作られたこれらの美術品は、それ以降の時代の精巧さに比べて少し荒削りだったりするけれど、深い信仰心と職人たちの情熱が伝わってくる。ドーム（クーポラ）を模した少し薄暗い展示室も雰囲気満点。静謐な心持ちになれる。

British Museum‘s new exhibition, just started last week, is “Treasures of Heaven: saints, relics and devotion in medieval Europe” (June 23 to October 9), featuring over 150 sacred treasures of the medieval age. In addition to the British Museum’s own pre-eminent collection, the important relics of Christ and the saints and other artifacts were drawn from more than 40 institutions including the Vatican, European church treasuries, museums from the USA and Europe (photographs of treasures). British Museum website says that religious treasures have not been seen in significant numbers in the UK since the Reformation in the 16th century, when iconoclasm was widely observed throughout England.

Relics featured in the exhibition include three thorns thought to be from the Crown of Thorns, fragments of the True Cross, the foot of St Blaise (photo), the breast milk of the Virgin Mary, the hair of St John the Evangelist, and the Mandylion of Edessa (one of the earliest known likenesses of Jesus). How graceful and exquisite the ornate reliquaries containing those relics are! Those religious treasures, produced during Middle Ages which started from the late Roman period and lasted 1000 years, are not necessarily as elaborate or fancy as those of the later periods, but you can feel strong faith and passion of the craftsmen of the age. The dome-shaped dark exhibition room, is solemn and serene, and make everyone feel calm and peaceful.

New Medieval & Renaissance Galleries opens @ Victoria & Albert Museum

7年もの年月と3170万ポンドをかけてようやく完成した、ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館（V&A）の新しいMedieval & Renaissance Galleries（中世ヨーロッパ＆ルネサンス・ギャラリー）が今日12月2日にオープンした。私は、華やかでいて素朴なタッチの、この時代のアートが好きなので、このギャラリーのオープニングを楽しみにしていた。計10室のギャラリーには、ローマ帝国の没落からルネッサンス時代の終わりまで、紀元300年から1600年頃までの美術品約1800点を展示。繊細な彫刻や本等の小さなものから、教会の内部、ステンドグラスや階段等、イングランドで作られた美術品からスペイン、フランス、ドイツ、イタリア等の芸術品まで、幅広いコレクションからは、当時のヨーロッパの芸術と文化を垣間見ることができる。ゆっくり観ていると一日がつぶれそうな、見応えたっぷりのギャラリーだ。ルネサンス時代の芸術はよく知られているけれど、文化が停滞した「暗黒時代（the dark ages）」と呼ばれる中世にも、宗教美術等を中心に、素晴らしい芸術が存在していたのだなと感心。

The Victoria & Albert museum (V&A) opens its new Medieval & Renaissance Galleries today, after spending 7 years and £31.7m of cost. I was looking for its opening, as I like lavish but realistic and simple medieval art.  The 10 galleries occupying 2 floors are filled with more than 1,800 objects from AD300 to 1600; the fall of the Roman Empire to the end of the Renaissance period. From small objects like sculptures and books to large artifacts such as church interiors, stained glasses and staircases, a wide variety of the collection range from the objects from Spain, France, Germany and Italy, to abundant works of art made in England, and it tells the story of European art and culture of the periods. You can spend many hours just looking at these beautiful masterpieces in the gallery. Renaissance art is widely known but I was impressed that magnificent artworks and crafts, especially religious art, also existed during the middles ages, often called “the Dark Ages,” – a period of cultural decline.

９月頃、まだ工事中だったギャラリーを見学する機会があった。既にいくらか展示品が置いてあったものの、まだ足場や木枠がそこら中に置いてあって、こんなに素晴らしいギャラリーに仕上がるとは全然予想できなかった。さすがV&A、イギリスを代表する美術館の一つだけあって、素晴らしいギャラリーに仕上がっている。1,800もの美術品が置かれているのに、すっきりレイアウトされていて広々としており、心が落ち着く。他の多くのイギリスの美術館・博物館のように、このギャラリーも入場料無料。Heritage Lottery Fund（歴史的建造物等の国民的遺産を保護するための、宝くじ収益金）から£975万ポンドの援助があった他は、全て寄付金でまかなわれたそうだ。さすが、芸術や歴史的遺産の保護に熱心な国民性だけある。本当に素晴らしいギャラリーなので、中世やルネッサンス美術に興味がなくても、機会があればぜひ行ってみてください！

We had a chance to observe the galleries under construction in September. There were some works already there but there are wooden frames and construction materials all over, and I never thought it would be transformed to such a magnificent and elegant galleries. That’s V&A – everything they do is always impressive! It is amazingly spacious, though the galleries contain almost 2,000 artifacts, and truly tranquil. And the admission is absolutely free (though some amount of donation is suggested), as many other British museums and galleries! Other than £9.75m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the cost of making the galleries was covered by donations. It is highly recommended to visit the gallery, no matter if you are interested in Medieval & Renaissance art or not – it is spectacular, and I liked it a lot!
