Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life @ Tate Britain

ここ数ヶ月の間に見た展覧会の中で一番印象に残っている、テートブリテンの「Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life」展のこと、ブログに書こう書こうと思っていて、ふと気付いたらもう10月。今月20日に終わる前にと慌てて筆を取った、もといキーボードに向かった。

イギリス人アーティスト・Laurence Stephen Lowry（ローレンス・スティーブン・ローリー）、略してLS Lowryは、イングランド北部ランカシャー州にある産業の街・Stretford生まれのイギリス人アーティストで、20世紀半ばのイングランド北部の産業地帯を好んで描いたことで知られる。海外ではあまり名は知られていないが、イギリスでは最も人気のある画家の一人だ。19世紀後半のフランスの絵画に影響を受けたローリーは、サッカーの試合やデモ行進、工場へ通勤する人々等、炭坑や工場、テラスハウスと呼ばれる集合住宅を背景に、「matchstick men（マッチ棒のように細長い人間）」と呼ばれる独特の作風で、産業革命で栄えた北部イングランドの労働者階級の人々の日常生活を生き生きと描いた。

ローリーは夜間クラスでパートタイムで絵画を学び、仕事後に作品を描いていた。60代で画家として成功を収めた後も、定年退職するまで事務員としてフルタイムで働いたという。そして、その生涯でKnightの爵位を含む5つのイギリスの栄誉称号を辞退し、イギリスで最も栄誉称号を受け取らなかった人物という記録を持つそうだ。

ローリーの作品からは、今は廃れてしまったけれど、かつては活気に満ちていた産業地帯にコミュニティや人々のバイタリティーやパワーが溢れ出ていて、見ているこちらも何故か元気が出てくる。イチオシの展覧会、終わる前に是非足を運んでみてください。

Although Tate Britain’s “Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life” is one of my favorite exhibitions in recent years, I have been postponing to write about it with no reason, but suddenly I realized that the exhibition is going to end soon on 20th this month (can’t believe it’s already October!) and finally I picked up the pen, no, started to type the keyboard.

Laurence Stephen Lowry, or simply L.S. Lowry is an English artist, born in industrial city of Stretford, Lancashire, and is known for his paintings of the industrial landscapes of the north of England in the mid-20th century. He is not known well abroad, but is one of the most popular painters in UK. Influenced by French painting of the later 19th century, Lowry painted  everyday life of working class people with a style often referred to as “matchstick men”, with background of coalmines, factories and terraced houses, as well as people going football matches and protest marches – typical urban landscapes of North England where once had been flourished during industrial revolution.

Lowry studied painting part-time in evening classes, and later only painted at night after work. He worked full-time for his whole life as a clerk and continued to be chief cashier at the Pall Mall Property Company in Manchester, even after he achieved success as a painter in his 60s.
Interestingly, Lowry rejected five honours during his life, including a knighthood, and holds the record for the most rejected British honours.

From Lowry’s painting, I can feel vitality and power of the people and the community, where now lost past glory after many factories and mines closed down, sadly. Highly recommended, and you shouldn’t miss it.

Meschac Gaba: Museum of Contemporary African Art @ Tate Modern

テートモダンではIbrahim El-Salahi展と時期を同じくして、もう一人のアフリカ人アーティストの展覧会、Meschac Gaba: Museum of Contemporary African Art展が開催されている。

ベニン人コンセプチュアル・アーティスト・Meschac Gabaの「Museum of Contemporary African Art」は、自分の作品を展示するスペースとして作った、12室構成の架空の「美術館」。Gabaは1997年に、このインスタレーションの最初の作品となる、どこかで見つけたものや、既存品に手を加えたもの、手作りなど様々なオブジェを配したDraft Roomを製作。その後の5年の間、展覧会毎に作品は増えていった。Gabaの「美術館」には、Library、Museum Restaurant、Museum Shopなど、通常美術館にあるものが全てあるという。「自分のファンタジーを見る人とシェアしたい」という願いのもと作った、彼独自の「部屋」も。Salonでは、アフリカの伝統的ゲーム・Awéléをモチーフにしたコンピュータゲーム、Adjiで遊べる。Art and Religion Roomには、古今東西の宗教関係のオブジェが日用品と共に並び、Marriage Roomには彼自身の結婚式で使われた品々や写真が展示されている。Architecture Roomでは、木製ブロックを使って仮想美術館を作ることが出来るし、大きなチェスのボードやアフリカの国々の国旗を再構成するパズルテーブルが置かれたGame Roomもある。このプロジェクトの最後に製作された金色の自転車を使ったHumanist Spaceは、同じフロアの展示室の外に置かれている（写真下）。

カラフルでユニーク、遊び心に溢れたこの展覧会、見ていて面白かったけれど、正直アーティストの意図する所がいまいち掴めない。それぞれの部屋にはアーティストのコンセプトや意味があるらしいのだけれど、書くと長くなるし抽象的で説明を読んでもよく分からないので、興味がある方はTateのウェブサイトを参考にしてください。

Tate Modern has been hosting an exhibition of another African Artist, Meschac Gaba: Museum of Contemporary African Art (until Sep 22), concurrently with Ibrahim El-Salahi.

Beninese conceptual artist Meschac Gaba’s Museum of Contemporary African Art is a 12-room installation, and he created this ‘museum’ because he wanted to have space to show his work. In 1997, he created the first part of his project, the Draft Room, contained an unusual assortment of handmade, found and altered objects. Over the next five years, further rooms would appear, one by one, in exhibitions and museums internationally. Gaba’s ‘museum’ has everything that you see in every museum, such as Library, Museum Restaurant and Museum Shop, and even cashier’s desk with monies on the top. He wanted ‘to share his fantasy’ and created his own unique rooms: the Salon where visitors can play the Adji computer game, an adaptation of the traditional African game Awélé; the Art and Religion Room containing all sort of religious icons from Christianity to animism together with everyday objects; the Marriage Room comprising with memorabilia of his own wedding; the Architecture Room where you can build your own imaginary museum using wooden blocks; and the Game Room with a big chess board and sliding puzzle tables reconfiguring the flags of some African countries. The last-completed section of the Humanist Space with gold bicycles is set outside the exhibition room on the same floor (photo below).

The exhibition is colorful, powerful and playful, but honestly I didn’t get artist’s message by just looking at it. Each room has its own concept and idea, but it’s too long to write and it is a bit too abstract for me to understand even by reading the description, so please check out Tate website if you want to know more.

BP Walk through British Art @ Tate Britain

5月14日から始まったテートブリテンのBP Walk through British Artは、1500年代から現代に至るイギリス・アートのナショナルコレクションで、過去500年に制作された500以上の作品を20以上のギャラリールームに時系列に配している。Francis Bacon（フランシス・ベーコン）、John Constable（ジョン・コンスタブル）、William Hogarth（ウィリアム・ホガース）、 Thomas Gainsborough（トマス・ゲインズバラ）、 George Stubbs（ジョージ・スタッブス）、J.M.W. Turner（ジョゼフ・マロード・ウィリアム・ターナー）、Gwen John、Stanley Spencer、L.S.Lowry、John Everett Millais（ジョン・エヴァレット・ミレー）、Bridget Riley、Damien Hirst（ダミアン・ハースト）、 David Hockney（デイヴィッド・ホックニー）、Rachel Whitereadなど、イギリスの名だたるアーティストの作品を含む膨大なコレクションには圧倒される。

時系列展示以外に、一つの作品 / アーティスト / テーマをより深く掘り下げるBP Spotlightコレクションシリーズの新しいディスプレイも見物。現在、コンスタブルのThe Cornfield、Image of the British School、Moving Images: Painting and Early Film、アート教育におけるBasic Design展のほか、Keith Arnatt、Rose Wylie、Douglas Gordonなど近代アーティストのコレクションを見ることが出来る。イギリス人アーティストたちが描いた風景画を集めたLooking at the View展を含むと、テートブリテンだけで膨大な量のイギリスアートが楽しめるのだが、これを全部見て回るのは、なかなか目も頭も足も疲れる。途中でワインの一杯でも飲んで、ゆっくり見て回るのがお薦め。

BP Walk through British Art (from May 14) is a new chronological presentation of the national collection of British art in a chronological display – a walk through time from the 1500s to the present day. This massive collection of British art over the past 500 years comprises around 500 artworks in over 20 galleries, and includes works by major British artists such as Francis Bacon, John Constable, William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough, George Stubbs, J.M.W. Turner, Gwen John, Stanley Spencer, L.S.Lowry, John Everett Millais, Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, and Rachel Whiteread (more details on the press release).

Alongside this chronological circuit, Tate Britain hosts a new series of seasonal BP Spotlight collection displays, which offer more depth on particular artworks, artists or themes: current displays include Constable’s The Cornfield, Image of the British School, Moving Images: Painting and Early Film, and Basic Design in art education, as well as on recent artists including Keith Arnatt, Rose Wylie and Douglas Gordon. Together with “Looking at the View” which explores the ways British artists have framed the view in their work, you can spend all day immersing yourself in British Art. Very interesting to see the British art all at once, but bit draining – I need a glass of wine in between.

Giorgio Morandi: Lines of Poetry @ Estorick Collection

アーティストでジョルジョ・モランディの大ファンである友人と、エンジェルにあるEstorick Collection of Modern Italian Artに「Giorgio Morandi: Lines of Poetry」展（1月16日〜4月7日）を見に行った。

モランディの出身地ボローニャの美術館・Galleria d’Arte Maggioreと共に企画されたこの展覧会は、1920〜60年代にかけて制作された約80のエッチング版画と、数点の水彩画、ドローイングを展示している。彼の作品のテーマは主に静物画と風景画。いくつかの花を描いた作品やポートレートを除き、テーブルの上に置かれた複数の瓶、水差し、碗などを描いた静物画（多少配置を変えながらも、同じオブジェが繰り返し登場）か、スタジオと住居があったボローニャと毎年避暑に訪れていたGrizzana（グリッツァーナ）の風景画がほとんど。

「Lines of Poetry」は、モノクロのエッチングやドローイング、淡い色調の水彩画など、小さいサイズの作品が1階の2部屋にこじんまり収まった（上の階にも数点展示）、かなり地味な展覧会だけれど、彼の作品の持つ静謐さと長閑けさが、妙に心地がいい。しかし、モランディ展で感じた穏やかさは、同時開催中のけばけばしい色調の「Alberto Di Fabio: Intervention」展（1月16日〜4月7日）によって完全に邪魔された。タイトルの「Intervention（干渉）」も、皮肉に聞こえる。まったく相容れない展覧会を一緒にしないでほしいものだ。

I went to see this “Giorgio Morandi: Lines of Poetry” exhibition (Jan 16 – Apr 7) at Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in Angel, with my artist friend who is a big fun of Giorgio Morandi.

Organised in collaboration with Galleria d’Arte Maggiore in Bologna, Morandi’s hometown, Lines of Poetry focuses on works on paper and includes Morandi’s some 80 etchings, as well as few watercolours and sketches, from 1920’s to 60s. The subjects of his works are pretty much restricted in still lifes, mainly same familiar bottles and vases on a table, and landscapes of Bologna and Grizzana where he visited every year during summer, but the exhibition also has a small number of works on flowers and portraits.

Lines of Poetry is rather understated exhibition with mainly monochrome etchings and pencil sketches and very few watercolours in undertones, in small sizes, in only two rooms on the ground floor (+ few works upstairs). But the tranquility and repose of his works are somehow comfortable and pleasant. However, peaceful moment I had been enjoying was disrupted by a concurrent exhibition, flashy and intense “Alberto Di Fabio: Intervention” (Feb 13 – Apr 7)… What an ironic title. They shouldn’t have mixed those incompatible exhibitions together!

The Tanks at Tate Modern: Fifteen Weeks of Art in Action

オリンピックを記念して行われた文化イベント・London 2012 Festivalの一環、そしてテート・モダンの拡大プロジェクトの第一段階として、7月18日に新しくオープンしたTHE TANKSは、ライブアート、パフォーマンス、インスタレーション、映像作品に特化した、初めてのギャラリー。旧Bankside発電所がテート・モダンに生まれ変わって以来使用されていなかった、幅30m・高さ7mのオイルタンクが、このユニークなアートスペースに生まれ変わった。

The Tanksでは、7月28日〜10月28日の15週間、様々なパフォーマンス、映像、トーク、ライブイベントが盛りだくさんの特別イベントを開催中。期間限定イベントの他、政治的パフォーマンスで有名なSuzanne Lacy（スザンヌ・レイシー）の作品「The Christal Quilt」（写真上から3番目）や、Lis Rhodes（リズ・ローズ）の実験的映像作品「Live Music」（写真上から4番目）など、過去のパイオニア的アーティストたちの作品と共に、ソウル、アムステルダム、ニューヨークで撮影したイメージを使ったビデオ作品やパフォーマンス・アートを制作している韓国人アーティスト、Sung Hwan Kim（キム・ソンファン）のコミッション作品（写真下1番目）が見られる。→プログラム

The Tanksの中は窓もなく薄暗く、防空壕にいる気分。ライブアートや映像作品は、なかなかタイミング良くスタートから見られないし、作品によっては事前にスケジュールをチェックしないといけないので、短気な私の好みではない。実際、バービカンセンターで公演を見て気に入った、ベルギー人振付師アンヌ・テレサ・ドゥ・ケースマイケルがスティーブ・ライヒの曲にあわせて制作した「Fase: Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich」を、満席のため見逃した。でも映像やライブアートに特化した、このギャラリーのコンセプトは面白い。私が見た中では、リズ・ローズの「Live Music」の、前を通る人のシルエットとスクリーンに写し出された随時変化するストライプのパターンのインタラクションは、見ていてとても楽しかった。

Tate Modern‘s THE TANKS is new and first museum galleries dedicated to live art, performance, installation and film, opened on July 18 this year as a part of the London 2012 Festival and the museum’s expansion project phase I launched this summer. The 30-metre width & 7-metre height circular oil tanks, unused since the former Bankside Power station was turned into the art gallery, were transformed into this unique art space.

From July 28 to October 28, The Tanks is hosting 15-week festival programme of international performance, film, talks and live events, alongside works from the collection by pioneers of social performance (The Christal Quilt by Suzanne Lacy: 3rd photo from the top) and expanded cinema (Live Music by Lis Rhodes: 4th photo), as well as a major new commission from South Korean artist Sung Hwan Kim (1st photo below), who combines video and performance art, collecting images from Seoul, Amsterdam and New York. →full program

Inside was dark with no windows, and I felt like I was in a bunker. I am not a big fan of live art and film, as you usually can’t watch an artwork from the start unless you are lucky, and I have to check the schedule in advance for some works. On the day, we missed the performance of “Fase: Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich” by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, because it was full. It was a big disappointment, because we saw the performance Barbican Centre in the past and I loved it. But the concept of The Tanks is interesting, and I like Live Music by Lis Rhodes – it’s fun to see an interaction of constantly changing stripes projected on the screen and silhouettes of a person passing or standing in front of it.
