Olympic Women’s Volleyball Preliminary Round @ Earl’s Court

オリンピック体験第3弾は、アールズ・コート展示センターで行われたバレーボール女子予選、日本対イギリス戦とイタリア対ロシア戦のダブルヘッダー。会場はアールズ・コート駅西側の出口のすぐ目の前なのだけれど、この日は混乱を避けるためか、東側が出口、西側が入口専用となっていたので、いつもより歩かされた。アールズ・コート展示センターは、以前にも100％デザイン展（参照：2009年/2010年）で数回行ったことがあるが、巨大な倉庫みたいな建物で、照明が少し暗めで床はコンクリートとちょっと殺風景な感じだけれど、中は大勢の観客で活気づいている。

開催国イギリスが登場するとあって、会場は大盛況。試合前やセット間は、マイクを持った男性が観客を盛り上げたり、スクリーンに映った観客にスクリーン上に描かれた太鼓を叩かせたりと大忙し。タイムアウトや休憩になる度に大音量の音楽が流れ、ポンポンを持ったチアリーダーが踊る。観客を退屈させないようにという配慮なんだろうけれど、ウルサいったらありゃしない。特にどこのオリンピック会場でもしょっちゅう流れる、クイーンの「ウィ・ウィル・ロック・ユー」には、正直うんざり。できれば余興なしで試合に集中したかった。

この日の試合は、第一試合は日本が2-0、第二試合はロシアが3−2で勝利。第二試合はフルセットまで行く手に汗握る攻防だったが、第一試合は日本の圧勝で、Mは退屈してイライラ。日本の勝利は嬉しいけれど、もう少しイギリスチームにも頑張って欲しかったな。

My Olympic experience No.3 was volleyball preliminary games (Japan vs UK, Italy vs Russia) at Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre. The venue is just in front of the west exit but we had to walk from the east exit quite a while on the day, as the east side was exit only and west side was entrance only to avoid the chaos. We went to Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre several times for 100% Design (past entries: 2009 / 2010). The place is like a huge tasteless warehouse with concrete floors and a bit dark, but it was quite lively with lots of spectators.

Atmosphere inside was full of enthusiasm as British team competed on the first game. The guy with microphone was busy cheering up the audience by talking excitedly and let people who were showed on screen to beat illustrated drums appeared on the screen. Cheerleaders were dancing with the loud music during the timeouts or in-between sets. So much noise all through the games! I understand that they tried to do anything to entertain the people, but it was too much. Now I am sick of Queen‘s “We Will Rock You“, which has been played repeatedly in all Olympic venues…

This day, Japan beat UK 2-0 on the first game and Russia won with 3-2 to Italy on the second. The game of Russia and Italy was heated up for full-sets and was very exciting, but M got bored while watching the first game – I was happy that Japan won, but I wished UK played a bit better…

Olympic Women’s Football Quarter Final @ Cardiff Millenium Stadium

私のオリンピック体験２番目は、ウェールズの首都・カーディフのミレニアム・スタジアムで行われた女子サッカー準々決勝、日本対ブラジル戦。カーディフまではパディントン駅から電車で2時間ちょっと。Super Off-Peak Returnという混雑時以外に使用できる割安切符でも往復£67.50（約8250円）かかる（see past entry for more about train fare）。ロンドンの会場で行われる試合は、チケット代にゾーン1〜9内乗り放題の1日券が含まれているのに、ロンドン以外の会場だと何もなし。甚だ不公平だ。そもそも「ロンドン・オリンピック」と銘打っているにも関わらず、男女ともサッカーの試合は、ウェンブリー・スタジアムで行われる数試合を除き、グラスゴー、ニューカッスル、マンチェスター、コヴェントリー、カーディフと、ロンドン以外のスタジアムで行われる。ロンドンは、ウェンブリー・スタジアムに加え、3万5000人以上収容できる大規模スタジアムが５つもあるのに（エミレーツ・スタジアム、スタンフォード・ブリッジ、ホワイト・ハート・レーン、ブーリン・グラウンド）、どうしてオリンピックで使用わないんだろう？LOCOG（ロンドンオリンピック・パラリンピック組織委員会）が、他都市にもオリンピック気分を味わってもらうためにそうしたのではないかと勝手に推測しているのだけれど、各地への移動を強いられる選手たちやサポーターにとっては、移動時間も出費もかかるし、たまったもんじゃない。

でも、2−0で日本が勝ったし、カーディフの人たちは皆フレンドリーだったし、翌日カーディフ観光も楽しんだということで、無駄足ではなかった。またカーディフ観光については後日書きます。

My Olympic game no.2 was the women’s football quarter final at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Cardiff is about two hours away by train from London Paddington station, and it cost £67.50/pp for Super Off-Peak Return fare, which is cheaper than normal fare but not cheap for supporters travelling from London (過去のエントリー. It is unfair that an Olympic ticket for any London venue includes one day travel card which you can travel free of charge within zone 1-9 (basically anywhere in London), but nothing for non-London venue. It’s a bit strange as it is called ‘London’ Olympic, but most of the Olympic football games both women’s and men’s tournaments are held outside London, except some at Wembley Stadium; in Glasgow, New Castle, Manchester, Cardiff and Coventry. London has five large football stadium with a capacity of over 35,000; Wembley Stadium, Emirates Stadium, Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane, and Boleyn Ground, and I don’t understand why these stadium can’t be used for the Olympics! I guess that LOCOG intends to share some excitement with other British cities, but it is not nice for footballers and supporters who have to travel all over the country to see the games.

However, Japan beat Brazil 2-0 and we enjoyed sightseeing of Cardiff the day after, so it was worth it at the end of the day. And everyone was nice in Cardiff :) I will talk about my trip to Cardiff later.

More Olympic Tickets To Go On Sale

売り切れとされていた人気の試合でさえ空席が目立つ試合もあったと批判されたことを受け、ロンドンオリンピック委員会は、国際競技連盟など関係者・団体と交渉して、配布された未販売・未使用のチケットを回収、再販することにしたと発表した（詳細）。今後もこれらチケット保持者と交渉を行いなるべく多くのチケットを回収、それらのチケットは毎日オリンピック公式サイトで販売されるそう（ガーディアン紙 / テレグラフ紙）。

私もオリンピックが始まってからチケットをチェックしてみたけれど、面白そうな試合は全て売り切れ。テレビ観戦で我慢するかと諦めていたところ、ニュースを見て早速チケットサイトを再チェック。今まで見たこともない数のチケットが出ていた。関係者用の席だったのか安い席は少ないし、大勢の人が買おうとしていたのかウェブサイトが上手く作動せず悪戦苦闘したが、何とかオリンピックパーク内での試合を含め何枚か決勝戦のチケットをゲットした。期間中、メイン会場でオリンピックの雰囲気を味わってみたかったので、すごく嬉しい：）

After the empty seats ordeal at the Olympic games (some of which were filled with soldiers in uniform – didn’t look good at all!), London 2012 Olympic organisers have announced that unsold and unused tickets allocated to international sports federations are collected, and go on sale on the London 2012 website every day from now (the Guardian / the Telegraph).

I had almost given up to see the Olympic with my own eyes as I tried to buy a ticket on the Olympic ticket site but to no avail, and have been just watching on TV. However, I checked the website again after I saw the news, and there were many tickets of interesting games suddenly appeared that I’ve never seen before! Many of the tickets were more expensive classes, and the system didn’t work well as I assume that many people were trying to grab the tickets at the same time, but I managed to buy some finals with one of them for the game at the Olympic Park  (I wanted to experience the festive atmosphere at the main Olympic Park during the Games). Now I am so thrilled!!

How to Enjoy London Summer Olympic 2012

オリンピックが始まって3日。英メディアが絶賛していた開会式は、イギリスを代表する舞踏家・Akram Khan（アクラム・カーン）が振り付けを担当したダンス以外、私的には期待外れだった。イギリスの歴史の一部やNHSがテーマの部分は、イギリスをよく知る人以外には少し難しい内容だったし、イギリス人が世界に誇る（と信じている）ものを取りあえずぶち込んだという感じで、全体的にまとまりがなかったように思ったのは私だけか。

始まる前はオリンピックにはあまり興味がなかったのに、見始めたらハマってしまった。同時進行的に開催される試合の中から、見たい試合を探すのに便利なサイトが、オリンピック公式ウェブサイト。左上の「Schedule & Results」をクリックすると、その日行われる全試合のスケジュールが網羅され、競技名をクリックするとタイムリーに結果がわかる。

Day 3 of London Summer Olympic. The opening ceremony was a bit of a disappointment for me except the performance of the British acclaimed dancer Akram Khan, despite British media bragged about it. Some of the British history and NHS part were a bit difficult to understand for foreigners who don’t know much about UK, and I felt like it was a bit of a mess and confusing, by putting all the “best of British” that British believe that everyone in the world knows.

I was not so keen on Olympics before it started, but now I am into it since I started to see the games. There are many games taking place simultaneously everyday, so I check London 2012 official site to search schedule of the games I want to see. The “Schedule & Results” page shows all the games of the day, and you can know a live result by clicking each sport.

イギリス選手が中心だけれど、BBCのオリンピック・サイトも、試合のスケジュールや見所、メダル獲得状況が一目で分かって便利。

BBC Olympic site is also useful, as it shows all the schedules, results and medals, though it focuses more on British athletes.

サイト中の「LIVE」をクリックすると、開催中の試合がライブで見られ、ページの下の「Catch Up」で、全てではないけれど見逃した試合も見られる。

Boxing Day: Big Sale Begins!

クリスマスの翌日26日は、Boxing Day（ボクシング・デー）。イギリスでは、前日のクリスマスとともにバンク・ホリデー（国民の休日）とされている。今年はボクシング・デーは土曜日なので、振替休日として月曜日も休みとなる。クリスマス、ボクシング・デーが土・日にあたる場合は、翌月曜・火曜日が休日になる。

26日は元々「聖スティーヴンの日（St. Stephen’s Day）」で、イエス・キリストが神の子であると述べ伝えた廉でユダヤ人によって石打の刑に処された殉教者ステファノを偲ぶ日だった。イギリスでいつ頃名前が変わったか不明だが、ボクシング・デーの由来は、教会が設置した貧しい人たちのための寄付箱（box）を開ける日であったとか、昔クリスマスにも働かなければならなかった使用人に、主人が箱（box）にプレゼントとボーナスを入れ、クリスマス翌日に渡していたからだ、等の説がある。今でも、牛乳や郵便、新聞配達人等に、チップやプレゼントを配ったり、この時期に合わせてボーナスを支給したりする会社もあるそうだ。

この日は、家族が団らんしたり、上流階級では猟犬を伴って狐刈りに出かける（fox hunting）のがイギリスの伝統だが、近年では、ショッピングとスポーツの日でもある。サッカーやラグビー等の試合が組まれ、この日は遠方のチームでなく、地元同士が対戦するなわらしだ。また、1年最大のバーゲンセール開始の日でもあり、人気の店では、朝早くから行列ができる。上のビデオは、開店直後のセルフリッジズ・デパート。みんな叫ぶわ走るわ、鬼気迫るものがある。朝5時には、4000人もの人が、9時の開店を待っていたそうだ。今年も一番乗りの女性は、朝2時から並んでいたと言う、気合いの入れよう。何年か前のボクシング・デーに、セルフリッジズに行ったが、午後だったにも関わらずたくさんの人で賑わっており、人疲れして何も買えず帰って来た。

今年は、不況のせいもあり、一部の店はクリスマス前にセールを前倒しにしたり、多くの店がインターネット上で一足先にセールを行っているにも関わらず、今年のボクシング・デーは土曜日、また景気対策のために暫定的に15％に下げられていた付加価値税（VAT: Value-Added Tax）が1月1日から17.5％に戻ることもあり、空前の人混みだったそうだ。アメリカン・エクスプレスの資産によると、セール総額は30億ポンド以上にものぼると予測されている。

Boxing Day is a bank and public holiday in UK, and is traditionally celebrated on 26 December, St. Stephen’s Day, commemorates St Stephen who is the first Christian martyr or protomartyr, the day after Christmas Day. Boxing Day is on Saturday this year, so following Monday will be a public holiday. If Christmasy day is a Saturday or Sunday, then both the Monday and Tuesday may be public holidays.

The origin of its name ‘Boxing’ Day is not determined, but one theory is that December 26 was traditionally the day to open the Christmas ‘Box’ to share the contents with the poor. Another theory is that it was a day the servants had a day off from their duties and received a ‘box’ of gifts and bonus from their masters. In modern times, many families still follow this tradition, giving a present or tip to a milkman, a postman, and a news boy. Also some companies give a bonus to their employees around this time.

Traditionally Boxing Day is a time for family and for traditional fox hunting, but also is known as a day of shopping and sports. Premier League as well as the lower divisions and Rugby Football leagues hold matches on Boxing Day. Traditionally matches on Boxing Day are played against local rivals. Also it is the first day of the biggest sale season and the busiest shopping day of the year. Many shoppers wait for the store opening in a queue from early morning  to bag a bargain. Around 4,000 started queuing from 5am outside Selfridges department store. A woman at the first of the waiting line arrived the store at 2 am in the morning in freezing cold! The video above is the scene at the Selfridges department store when the door opened – people shout and run as soon as they came inside, and it is pretty horrifying. I cannot understand how much effort people can make, just for shopping. We went to Selfridges on Boxing Day few years ago. It was so crowded, even it was late afternoon, that we came back home empty handed, completely exhausted.

This year some stores started their sales before Christmas and many had already launched their sales online. But the biggest ever Boxing Day shopping spree is recorded today, because this year’s Boxing Day is on Saturday, and the current temporary 15% VAT rate will return to 17.5% on January 1st. Research by American Express suggests that more than £3 billion will be spent in the sales.
