Schwitters in Britain @ Tate Britain

Tate Britainで開催中のSchwitters in Britain (1月30日〜5月12日）は、ダダイスム、構成主義、シュルレアリスムなど近代芸術運動で活躍し、詩、サウンド、絵画、彫刻、グラフィック・デザイン、タイポグラフィ、そして後にインスタレーションと呼ばれる様々な手法を用いたヨーロッパ・モダニズムの巨匠でドイツ人アーティスト、Kurt Schwitters（クルト・シュヴィッタース）の展覧会。Schwitters in Britain展では、戦争避難民として1940年にイギリスに到着してから1948年の彼の死まで、イギリスで活動していた期間の作品を主に、商品パッケージや新聞の切れ端などありふれた素材を使った150以上のコラージュや、彫刻作品、絵画などが展示されている。シュヴィッタースは、芸術目的のため、想像しうる全ての物を組み合わせる「メルツ」という概念を生み出し、found object（偶然見つけたもの）や日常生活の中にあるものを抽象的コラージュ、インスタレーション、詩、パフォーマンスに用いるスタイルを確立。彼の作品は、リチャード・ハミルトン、エドゥアルド・パオロッツィ、ダミアン・ハーストなど、後のイギリス人アーティスト達にも大きな影響を与えた。

シュヴィッタースは、自身の作品がナチス政府に「退廃芸術」との烙印を押されたことにより、1937年にドイツを離れ、最初の3年は息子が居たノルウェーに滞在。ナチスのノルウェー占領を機に、1940年にイギリスに渡ったが、敵国国民として1941年に解放されるまで各地の収容所で過ごした。その後、ロンドンのアート界で活躍、イギリス人アーティストや美術批評家と交流を深めた。1945年に湖水地方に移住、自然の素材を作品に使い始めた。また、出身地・ハノーファーで作り上げた建築的大規模構成作品・Merzbau（メルツ建築／メルツバウ）と呼ばれる作品の一環として、ここでもMerz Barn（メルツ小屋、物置）を制作した。展覧会は、シュヴィッタースの遺志を受け継いで、アーティスト・Adam ChodzkoとLaure Prouvostが制作した委託作品で締めくくられている。

戦時のムードや彼の避難民としての経験を反映してか、シュヴィッタースの抑えた色調の作品は、控えめで少し陰鬱な印象で、先日書いたリキテンスタイン展とは正反対。多くの人は、偉大なアーティストでモダンアートのパイオニアであるシュヴィッタースの作品に感銘を受けているのであろうが、私は何故か彼の有名なコラージュ作品群を見ても何とも感じないのだ。彼の正統派作品のポートレートや風景画（参照：FT / Guardian）は悪くないのだが、ただ単に私の好みじゃないのですよ。。。

Schwitters in Britain (January 30 – May 12) at Tate Britain is the major exhibition to examine the late work of German artist Kurt Schwitters, one of the major artists of European Modernism, who worked in several genres and media including Dada, Constructivism, Surrealism, poetry, sound, painting, sculpture, graphic design, typography and installation art. Focusing on his British period from his arrival in Britain as a refugee in 1940 until his death in 1948, the exhibition showcases over 150 collages, often incorporated fragments from packaging and newspapers, as well as sculptures and paintings. Schwitters invented the concept of Merz, ‘the combination, for artistic purposes of all conceivable materials’, and pioneered use of found objects and everyday materials in abstract collage, installation, poetry and performance. His work has influenced later British artists such as Richard Hamilton, Eduardo Paolozzi and Damien Hirst. 

Schwitters was forced to flee Germany in 1937, when his work was condemned as ‘degenerate’ by Nazi government and first settled in Norway for  three years. He escaped to Britain in 1940 after the Nazi occupation of Norway but had been detained as an enemy alien until his release in 1941. Then he became involved with the London art scene, engaging with British artists and critics such as Ben Nicholson and Herbert Read. In 1945 Schwitters relocated to the Lake District, and began to incorporate natural objects into his work. The move also culminated in the creation of his sculpture and installation, the Merz Barn, a continuation of his Hanover architectural construction Merzbau. The exhibition ends with commissions by artists Adam Chodzko and Laure Prouvost made in collaboration with Grizedale Arts to explore the Schwitters’ legacy.

Schwitters work using muted colours is rather understated and somehow gloomy, probably reflected the atmosphere of the war time and his life experience as a refugee. Completely oposite to the ambience of the Lichtenstein exhibition. He must be a great artist and a pioneer of modern art, and probably many people love the exhibition, but I don’t feel anything by looking at his famous collages, though I like his conventional portraits and landscape paintings (such as in FT and Guardian). His work is just not my cup of tea…

Shepherdess Walk Mosaics

これらの優雅で素敵なモザイク画「History in the Making」は、去年5月に、2012年ロンドンオリンピックを記念して、ハックニーの小さな公園・Shepherdess Walk Parkに設置された。ハックニー区のプロジェクトであるこのモザイクは、ウェストミンスター寺院やテレンス・コンランのレストランなども手がけたイギリス人モザイクアーティスト・Tessa Hunkinがデザイン。8ヶ月の月日をかけて、麻薬やアルコール依存症からの快復を目指す人々を含む100人以上のボランティアの手によって作り上げられた。

右側2枚のパネルは、古代ローマ時代のモザイクからインスピレーションを得て、携帯電話やフリスビー、スケートボードなど現代のハックニー・ライフを表しており、春から冬まで四季折々、ハックニーの様々な公園でひとときを過ごす人々や元気に走り回る動物達が見て取れる。壁から突き出している幅の狭い壁には、モザイクのパターンと製作者の名前、そして詩人・Ken Edwardsによるポエムが記され、奥のパネルには、公園の名の元となった「shepherdess（羊飼いの女性）」たちが、彼女達の羊と共に描かれている。

These beautiful mosaics called “History in the Making” appeared on the walls of a small Shepherdess Walk Park in Hackney, in May last year. Funded by Hackney council to celebrate the year of the 2012 London Olympics, the mosaics are designed by British mosaic artist, Tessa Hunkin, whose works decorating Westminster Cathedral and Terrance Conran restaurants, and have been made by over 100 volunteers including people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, taking 8 months to complete. 

The two panels were inspired by Roman mosaics but they also show details from Hackney life in 2012 with modern gadgets such as mobile phones, frisbees and skateboards. In four seasons from spring to winter, people + animals enjoying in various Hackney’s parks are depicted. Shorter walls coming out vertically show patterns and maker’s names, as well as a poem written by Ken Edwards. Another panel is dedicated to the shepherdesses who gave their name to the park, accompanied by their sheep.

Festival of the World @ Southbank Centre

今年の夏のロンドンオリンピック・パラリンピックにあわせ、サウスバンク・センターでは、Festival of the World（6月1日〜9月9日）が開催されている。スポーツや芸術が若者の夢や向上心を刺激すると考えた、近代オリンピックの創立者であるピエール・ド・クーベルタン男爵にインスピレーションを得たというこのフェスティバル、芸術は人々の人生を変えられることを証明するのを目的に、アート、音楽、ダンス、詩、文学、コメディなど世界の文化イベントの他、マーケットや「urban beach（人工ビーチ）」など、様々な催しが行われている。明日29日から始まるパラリンピックと同時に、障碍を持つアーティストたちの作品を紹介するイベント「Unlimited（8月30日〜9月9日）」もスタートする予定。

Southbank Centre has been hosting Festival of the World this summer from June 1 to September 9, coinciding with the London 2012 Olympics/Paralympics. The festival is inspired by the founder of the Olympic movement, Baron Pierre de Coubertin who believed that the arts and sport could raise the aspirations of young people. During the period, Southbank offers a variety of international cultural events such as art, music, dance, poetry, literature, and comedy, as well as markets, urban beach and more to demonstrate how art can transform lives. Corresponding with the start of Paralympic Games tomorrow on August 29, ‘Unlimited‘ (Aug 30–Sep 9) will showcase art and culture commissions by disabled and deaf artists.

中でリラックスしたり遊んだりできる、かまくら型のユニークな「London Earth Creature」は、エコ建築のスペシャリスト・Small Earthの作品。

廃材を使用して大規模作品を創っているロンドンベースのアート集団・Robots>>>>の「Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down（下を見なければ全てが美しく見える）」。2011年のFestival of Britainで使用した木材や鉄を再利用している。

世界から集められた布地で作られた、15mの高さの「Under the Baobab（バオバブの木の下で） 」は、Pirate Technicsが制作。

15 metres tall “Under the Baobab” is made from stacks of fabric rings using material from around the globe, created by Pirate Technics.

Trey WatkinsとCameron Brownの二人のアーティストの作品「Perspectives（視点）」。一見、無造作に置かれたアルファベットだけれど、一定のアングルから見るとメッセージが浮かび上がる。

Festival of Britain @ Southbank

ロンドンはこのところ晴れ続き、最高気温26度と、ロンドンとしては真夏並みの毎日。明日からのイースターホリデーもお天気だそうで、サウスバンクで明日から始まるFestival of Britainにはもってこいの良い陽気になりそう。

イギリスの文化と創造力を祝うFestival of Britainは、今年で60周年を迎える。フェスティバルが始まった1951年のロンドンは、第二次世界大戦の傷跡もまだ生々しく、再開発が必要だった。そんな中、フェスティバルはイギリス人に戦争からの復興と、破壊された都市の再構築における、より品質の高いデザインの発展と促進のために企画された。

主催するサウス・バンク・センターでは、9月4日の終了まで4ヶ月に渡り、ミュージシャンのレイ・デイヴィスの「Melt Down」やYBAアーティスト、トレイシー・エミンの「Tracey Emin: Love is What You Want」展など、
著名アーティストや思想家たちのパフォーマンスやトーク、イベントなどが開催される予定。

It’s been incredibly nice in London these days with a year-worth of sunshine and maximum temperature of 26° like a summer time. The weather is supposed to remain good and dry during upcoming Easter weekend, which is perfect for the opening of Festival of Britain from Good Friday tomorrow in Southbank.

The Festival of Britain, celebrating  British culture and creativity, marks its 60th anniversary this year. The first festival was held in 1951 just after Word War II, when much of London was still in ruins and redevelopment was badly needed. The Festival was an attempt to give Britons a feeling of recovery and progress and to promote better-quality design in rebuilding of British towns and cities following the war.

This year, Southbank Centre hosts a variety of performances, new outdoor environments, talks and events by some of Britain’s leading artists and thinkers, including rock musician Ray Davies‘s ‘Melt Down‘ and  “Tracey Emin: Love is What You Want“, for four months until September 4.

川の側のQueens Walkでは、ヴィンテージ水着の展示や貝で出来た洞窟など、アーティストたちによってカスタマイズされた、イギリスのビーチにつきもののカラフルなBeach Hut（ビーチ小屋）が並ぶ（写真はオープニング前）。海鳥の保存協会が啓蒙活動を行う、Mark Dion製作のMobile Gull Appreciation Unit（カモメへの理解のための移動式ユニット）も、ご愛嬌（写真）。

On the Queens Walk next to the Thames, colourful Beach Hut, typical on British beaches, customised by artists to contains something different, such as n exhibition of vintage beachwear and a shell grotto. Mark Dion’s Mobile Gull Appreciation Unit, which plays host to different seabird preservation societies, is a bit freaky but cute, and guaranteed to catch people’s attention (photo).

同じくQueen’s Walkに作られた、70mの長さのURBAN BEACH。水着姿で日焼けに勤しむ人々で一杯のパリ・プラージュと違い、子供の砂場と化している。

70-metre beach “URBAN BEACH” on the Queen’s Walk. The beach becomes a kids playground, in compare to French counterpart of Paris Plage, which is more like an outdoor tanning salon.

きつねはペット、それとも害獣？わらブロックで出来た作品「Urban Fox」は、そんな問題を提起。すごく悲しそうな表情にキュンとくる（写真）。この作品メイキングのビデオはここをクリック。

レベル2の外のテラスに展示された、アート・インスタレーション（アーティスト、作品名は不明）。詩？が書かれたたくさんの紙が天井から吊るされ、その天井に貼られた何本のワイヤーには、紙飛行機が。

Art installation outside Level 2 on the Riverside Terrace (I can’t find who made this and what is the title). Strings of papers with poetry? are attached from the ceiling, and paper aeroplanes are on the wires coming out of the ceiling.

Great British Railways: Royal Mail World’s First “Intelligent” Stamps

今年8月19日に発行された、ロイヤル・メールの記念切手シリーズの「Great British Railways」。British Rail（イギリス国鉄）が製造した最後の標準クラス9F蒸気機関車「Evening Star」の製造終了50周年を記念して発行された。イギリスの蒸気機関車を取り上げた、初めての記念切手となる。

These are Royal Mail’s special stamps “Great British Railways” issued in August 19, celebrating the 50th anniversary of British Rail’s last steam locomotive, the 9F Class ‘Evening Star’. This is the first in a series of special stamp issues commemorating classic British locomotives.

一見したら普通の切手だけれど、これはロイヤル・メールいわく、世界初の「インテリジェント」切手なのだそうだ（Royal Mail プレスリリース）。iPhoneまたはAndroidを搭載したスマートフォンを通して切手を見ることで、画像認識技術が作動し、ロイヤル・メールが制作したオンライン専用コンテンツが立ち上がるという、切手において世界初のシステムで、9月3日よりスタートした。JunaioというアプリをインストールしたスマートフォンでGreat British Railways切手を見ると、1936年に郵便局によって作られたドキュメンタリーで有名になったW・H・オーデンの詩「The Night Mail」を、ドクター・フー出演俳優のBernard Cribbins（バーナード・クリビンス）が読み上げる短編映画が再生される。この技術は、ロイヤル・メールが将来発行する記念切手のいくつかにも採用される予定だそうだ。

These stamps look just ordinary stamps, but Royal Mail claims these are the world’s first “intelligent” stamps (Royal Mail release). Launched on September 3, it is the first in the world to work with image recognition technology, which, when activated by a smartphone on the iPhone or Android platforms, will launch exclusive online content created by Royal Mail. Viewing the Great British Railways stamp,via the Junaio app installed smartphone, will direct you to a short film showing Doctor Who actor Bernard Cribbins reading Auden‘s famous poem “The Night Mail“, first made famous in The Post Office’s own film from 1936. Royal Mail will use the technology available on selected future special stamps.
