Design Store Chain Habitat will be sold to Argos Owner!!

今日のニュースによると、イギリスのデザイン家具ショップのチェーン、Habitat（ハビタ。過去のエントリー1/2/3）が破産。 Argos（アーゴス）やHomebase（イギリスの大手ホームセンター・チェーン）を所有するHome Retail Groupが、Habitatブランドとトッテナムコート・ロード店、キングス・ロード店、フィンチリー・ロード店の計を3店舗を、2,450万ポンドで買収すると言う。この3店舗以外の全国30店はしばらく営業を続け、買い手を捜すそうだが。。。ここ数年、セールばっかりやってるなあと思っていたら、やはり経営状態は思わしくなかったようだ。

不況のせいもあるけれど、BBCニュースによると、サー・テレンス・コンランによって1964年に設立された当時は斬新であったモットー、「good design, affordable for all（良いデザインを手頃な値段で）」と言うコンセプトは、IKEAをはじめとして、今やいろんなお店が真似るようになってしまったことも原因の一つだそう。Habitatには度々お世話になっていたので、将来なくなってしまったらとても悲しい。。。

According to today’s news, British design furniture chain, Habitat (past entry 1/2/3) goes into administration. Home Retail Group, owner of Argos and Homebase, will buy the Habitat brand and three central London stores (Tottenham Court Road, King’s Road and Finchley Road) for £24.5m. The remaining 30 UK stores will trade as usual while the administrator talks to potential buyers. Habitat has been having ‘sale’ all the times in these years, and it is true that the chain hasn’t been doing well.

Not only the recent recession is the reason for their failure, but also the store’s concept “good design, affordable for all” was innovative and original when Sir Terence Conran set up the chain in 1964, but now other stores also take the same strategy and some, like IKEA, even sell ‘design’ products cheaper. I will be quite sad if the Habitat stores will disappear in the future…

New V+ HD Set Top Box by Virgin Media

今日、ヴァージン・メディアから新しいセット・トップ・ボックス「V+HD Box (V+)」が届いた。今までは、2007年にヴァージン・メディアと改名する前のTelewest のセット・トップ・ボックス（写真下）を長年使っていたが、Mが11日から始まるワールドカップを前に、新しいテレビを買うことを決めたので、同時にセット・トップ・ボックスも新しいのに変えることにした。

V+HD Boxは、Personal Video Recorderという、テレビ放送などの映像をハードディスクに記録するビデオレコーダー。放送中の番組も、巻き戻しや一時停止ができる。また、一つの番組を観てる間に、他の番組も同時に2つまで録画することができ、最大80時間分もの番組を収録可能。録画操作も簡単で、画面に映し出されたテレビガイドの中から好きな番組を選び、「record（録画）」を押すだけ。「Series Link」と呼ばれるサービスを使うと、お気に入りの番組全話を毎回自動的に録画できる。高解像度、高画質、高精細のHigh Definition（ハイ・デフィニション）に対応、HDMIを通じてオンデマンドのコンテンツもサポートしている。

不満なのは、TV XLパッケージの新規契約者には無料のV+HD Boxが、既存のTV XL契約者は、古いボックスを引き続き月額レンタル£5.50でキープする人以外は、£75を支払わないといけないこと。もう何年もヴァージン・メディアも使っていて、契約内容もテレビもインターネット回線も最高額のものなのに。それにiPlayer（BBCの無料見逃し視聴サービスで、テレビでもオンラインでも見られる）の起動が早くなるという触れ込みなのに、相変わらず遅い。

ちなみに最近、ヴァージン・メディアは、敵対していたBritish Sky Broadcasting Group（BSkyB）に1億6000万ポンドで買収されることになったそうだ。サービスが向上すればいいんだけれど、ますます寡占化が進むのでは。

We received a new set-top box “V+HD Box (V+)” from Virgin Media today. We had been using an old set-top box from Telewest (company was rebranded as Virgin Media in 2007) for years, but M wants to buy a new TV before the World Cup South Africa, and we decided to change the set-top box as well.

V+HD Box is a Personal Video Recorder, using a hard-disk to record up to 80 hours of TV shows. The box let you pause and rewind live TV. While watching a program, you can record up to two other channels at the same time. It is easy to record – just select a programme from the on-screen TV guide and press ‘record’. With ‘Series Link’ service, you can record every episode of your favorite series automatically. The box also supports HD programming and on-demand content via HDMI.

What I don’t like is that we, as a existing customer , must pay “set-up fees” for £75 for the set-up box which is available free of charge for new customer with XL TV package, unless we keep our existing set-top box in another room for £5.50 a month. We have been a loyal customer for years, with most expensive package for TV and broad band! Also a start-up of BBC iPlayer is supposed to be faster, but it seems as dead slow as before.

Recently it is reported that Virgin Media is to be bought by its archenemy BSkyB for £160 million pounds. I hope the service will be better and Sky won’t abuse its monopolizing power…

Cadbury agrees Kraft’s £11.9 billion Takeover Deal

今日、186年の歴史を誇る英製菓・飲料大手Cadbury（キャドバリー）社が、9月から4ヶ月に渡った交渉の末、米食品大手Kraft（クラフトフーヅ）社による総額119億ポンドの買収提案を受け入れた。これまで、キャドバリー側は当初の評価額105億ポンドは低すぎるとして提案に反対してきたが、クラフト側が1株840ペンスのシェアに引き上げた新しい案を打診したため、取締役会は一転して買収案支持に回った。産業革命の発祥地としての過去の栄光もどこへやら、製造業の衰退が進み、世界に誇れる数少ない製造業の１つであるキャドバリーまで外国企業の傘下に入ってしまうということで、投資家を除きイギリス人一般の反応はあまり好意的ではない。また、クラフトは70億ポンドもの借金をして買収に臨んだため、買収後はコスト削減が予想され、4500人いるイギリス国内の従業員の処遇が心配されている。私は、超甘で後味が悪いキャドバリーのチョコレートは嫌い（関連エントリーはこちら）なので、ニュースを聞いても何とも思わないけれど、ヨーロッパ一のチョコ食いのイギリス人（本当はスイスが一番だがEU不参加なので）のキャドバリーに対する愛着は強く、この4ヶ月の間にFacebook等ネット上で買収に反対するグループが多くできたと言う。またこれまで一貫して買収に反対していたキャドバリーCEOが、この合意の結果、合計700万ポンドを受け取ることになるため（買収後引退すると予測されている）、まるでお金のために提案を受け入れたような書かれ方をしている（実際そうかもしれないが）。

Today, the 186 year-old British confectionery and beverage company Cadbury agrees to £11.9 billion takeover deal by American food giant Kraft Food, after 4 months of negotiation since September 2009. The Cadbury board once dismissed an initial £10.5 billion as too cheap, but they couldn’t resist when Kraft raised their offer to 840 pence a share. British manufacturing, once made the nation prosperous after the Industrial Revolution, has been declined in recent years. Therefore, a takeover of Cadbury by a foreign company, one of the few globally competitive manufacturer left in the country, is another blow for many British (except investors). Kraft will borrow £7bn ($11.5bn) to finance the deal, and there are some fears over possible cost and job cuts at Cadbury’s UK operations with 4,500 workers. I don’t like Cadbury’s chocolate as it is too sweet for me and leave me some aftertaste – therefore the deal doesn’t affect me (see my past related entry). But Europe’s biggest chocolate eater British people’s love and attachment towards Cadbury is very strong, and many groups against the takeover have been formed over the internet such as facebook and other SNS during the process. The Evening Standard article reveals that Cadbury CEO, who had been highly critical of Kraft as an unsuitable partner with low growth prospects, is expected to walk away with a payout worth £7 million, and the article gives an impression that he agreed the offer for his own personal gain (and it is probably true).

Economic Nationalism（エコノミック・ナショナリズム／国内産業を規制・保護する）の傾向が強いドイツやフランス、イタリアと対照的に、イギリス労働党政府は「Open Door（開かれた）」ポリシーを標榜し、自国企業を無理矢理保護しようとしない。2005年にはローバー社は消滅、ジャガーとランドローバーはインドのタタ・モーターズ社の傘下に入った。今の私たちの電気会社は、いつのまにかLondon Electricityからフランス電力公社のイギリス子会社であるEDF Energyに代わっていたし、2009年にはBMI（ブリティッシュ・ミッドランド航空）は独ルフトハンザ航空に買収された。銀行のAbbey、Bradford & Bingley（経営不振で一時国有化された）は今月10日から、そしてAlliance & Leicesterは今年度中に、自らのブランド名を降ろし、親会社でユーロ圏最大の銀行グループであるスペインのSantander（サンタンデール）の名を冠することになる（BBC記事はこちら）。ヒースロー空港等イギリス国内外の空港を管理するBBA（BAA Airports Ltd）も、スペイン・Ferrovial Groupの一員だ。

Unlike the countries with a tendency of Economic Nationalism such as Germany, France and Italy, this labor government has pursued “open door” policy, letting many British companies fallen to foreign managements in recent years: Tata Motors of India obtained Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford, and no more Rover cars currently in production. Our electricity supplier changed from London Electricity to EDF Energy, UK subsidiary of the French state-owned EDF SA, without realizing it. BMI (British Midland Airways) was taken over by German carrier Lufthansa in 2009. British banks Abbey and Bradford & Bingley (once nationalized due to the credit crunch) has been rebranded as Santander, Spanish owner of the banks, from 10th of this month, and Alliance & Leicester will follow Abbey and Bradford & Bingley later this year (click here for BBC article). BBA (BAA Airports Ltd), the owner and operator of several airports domestic and worldwide, is now owned by an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group.

このブログのために色々調べていて、ふとこのキャドバリーのテレビ広告を思い出した。二人の子供が音楽に合わせて眉毛を動かすこのCM「Eyebrows」、昨年はブログやユーチューブで、カルト的人気を誇った。

It has a cult popularity, and it has been talked a lot among bloggers last year, and had been viewed more than 4 million times on YouTube and other sites in its first 3 weeks.
