Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan @ Tate Modern

イタリア人コンセプチュアル・アーティスト、アリギエロ・ボエッティの回顧展「Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan」が、テート・モダンで5月27日まで開催されている。ボエッティは、1960年代後半に既成の芸術に反抗し、工業素材や石や木など単純素材を用いた、イタリアの前衛的美術運動・アルテ・ポーヴェラ（「貧しい芸術」）の一員として活躍。この展覧会が、テート・モダンで開催される、アルテ・ポーヴェラ系アーティストの初の個展となる。

トリノ出身のボエッティは、フィアットを中心とする自動車産業の中心であるトリノと関連する工業用素材を使用、後に切手やボールペン、雑誌の表紙などを使って作品を創っている。この展覧会では、建築素材を使用した建造物、ボールペンを使ったドローイング、飛行機を描いた水彩画、世界の河川のリスト、アフガン人の手で作られた、数値システムをベースにしたパターンが織り込まれたキリム、そして彼の代表作である、各国の上に国旗の織りを入れた世界地図シリーズ「Mappa」等、様々な作品を展示している。ボエッティは遠方の地に興味を持ち、エチオピア、グアテマラ、アフガニスタンといった国を旅した。1971年にカブールを訪れた後、71〜79年の間、アートプロジェクトとしてカブールでホテルを設立、そこで「Mappa」等カラフルで大きな刺繍作品を創っていた。また秘儀や神秘的なものへの関心や、60年代〜70年代のイタリアの日常や政治に呼応した作品など、その作風はバラエティに富んでいる。

ボエッティのことは全く知らずに観に行ったのだが、派手派手しさはないものの、彼の几帳面さ、細部へのこだわりが伺える展覧会で、中々面白かった。

Italian conceptual artist, Alighiero E Boetti‘s retrospective, “Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan” is currently running at Tate Modern until May 27th. Boetti is a key member of Arte Povera group of young Italian artists in the late 1960s, which was working in radically new ways using simple materials. This is the first solo show by an Arte Povera artist at Tate Modern.

Turin-born Boetti used industrial materials associated with Turin, Italy’s automotive manufacturer centre, and later made works using postage stamps, ballpoint pens, and magazine covers. His work in the exhibition includes constructions made with building materials, biro drawings, watercolour paintings of aeroplanes, lists of rivers,and woven kilims made by Afghans with patterns based on numeric systems, as well as a series of embroidered world maps in which each country features the design of its national flag, Mappa, which is his most renown work. Boetti was interested in faraway places and made a trip to places such as Ethiopia, Guatemala and Afghanistan. After travelled to Kabul in 1971, he set up a hotel in Kabul between 1971 – 79 as an art project and created large colourful embroideries such as Mappa. He was also fascinated by esoteric and mystical thought, and was responsive to everyday conditions in Italy and to its politics in the 60s-70s. 

I’ve never heard of Boetti before I saw this exhibition. Though  Boetti’s work is not attention-grabbing or glitzy, but I quite enjoyed the show and his work with his attention to details and methodical approach.

Fiona Banner: Harrier and Jaguar @ Tate Britain

テート・ブリテンに「Turner Prize 10」展を見に行った際、展示室に行く時に真っ先に目に入った、つり下げられた巨大な飛行機。これは、今年度のテート・ブリテンのDuveens Commission（6月28日〜2011年1月3日）に選ばれた、イギリス人女性アーティスト、Fiona Banner（フィオナ・バナー）の「Harrier and Jaguar」という作品。小さい頃、父親とウェールズの山々を散歩している時に見た戦闘機に魅せられたというバナーは、Harrier（ハリアー）とJaguar（ジャギュア）という戦闘機2台を、美術館の真ん中を突き抜ける広々としたDuveen Galleryに再現した。ハリアーは、捕われた鳥のように天井から吊るされ、ジャギュアは鏡のようにピカピカに磨き上げられ、動物が従順さを示すように、腹を上にして横たわっている。

普通の女性は戦闘機には興味がないものだし、作品自体かなり男性的なので、これが女性アーティストの作品だと知って驚いた。スケールの大きさもその構図も迫力があるし、美術館と戦闘機と言う取り合わせもミスマッチで面白い。本来の目的である2010年ターナー賞展より良かったと思う（ちなみに、バナーは2002年のターナー賞候補に選ばれている）。

When we went to see “Turner Prize 10” at the Tate Britain, the first thing caught my eye as soon as we came into the museum was a huge airplane hanging from the ceiling. This is British artist Fiona Banner‘s “Harrier and Jaguar” for this year’s Duveens Commission (June 28  –  January 3, 2011). Banner, who has long been fascinated by a war plane since her encounter during long walks in the Welsh mountains with her father, recreated two fighter planes Harrier and Jaguar in the Duveen Galleries. The suspended Sea Harrier transforms machine into captive bird, while a mirror shine Jaguar lies belly up on the floor, with its posture suggestive of a submissive animal.

It was surprising to know that this is a work of a female artist, because the work is quite masculine – generally women and machines (especially war plane!) don’t have a good chemistry with each other. The work is pretty impressive with its size and unexpected composition, and a mismatch between an art museum and war planes is intriguing. I enjoyed this work more than the Turner Prize 2010 exhibition, which was the main purpose of our visit (Banner was short-listed for the Turner Prize in 2002, by the way).

Increases in UK Air Passenger Duty from Today – Air fares to rise!!

今日11月1日より、イギリスの航空旅客税（出国税、Air Passenger Duty）が値上げになった。2段階式値上げで、来年11月1日はさらに値上げとなる（以下の表参照）。エコノミーでヨーロッパ内ならたった£1の違いだが、長距離、例えば日本（Band C）なら、元の£40から25%増の£10値上がりの£50になる（来年はなんと£75！）。イギリスの航空券は、チケットの額面価格に加え、航空旅客税／出国税、各空港使用料、各航空会社規定のセキュリティーチャージ、燃料費等、その他諸々の費用が£200以上（ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズの例）になることもあり、£10でもばかにならない。2004年に税が導入された時は、短距離£5、長距離£20だったのが、どんどん上がっている。

今回の増税は、アンフェアだという声もある（デイリー・テレグラフの記事参照）。上記のeasyJetの新聞広告にもあるように、富裕層や企業向けのプライベート・ジェット（自家用機）や貨物便は無税だ。また、エコノミーよりもちょっと広いだけのプレミアム・エコノミークラスが、エコノミークラスではなく、ビジネスやファーストクラスと同等だというのも不公平だ。また、最初は環境税として導入された航空旅客税が、1ペニーも環境保護政策に使われていないと言う。結局政府の税収増加のための言い訳なんだろう。またテレグラフ紙は、航空旅客税撤回キャンペーンも行っている。増税反対の人は、是非署名を！

The first of two increases in UK Air Passenger Duty (APD) comes into effect today on November 1 (see the tables below). Tiny fraction of £1 increase for a European flight, but long-haul, for example APD for a flight to Japan (Band C) is now £50, £10 (25%) increase from £40 (next year will be astonishing increase to £75 – almost double!!). £10 increase may not sound a big deal, but airport tax, fuel surcharges, and other fees and charges in addition to APD are added to a ticket price (for British Airways casefor a flight to Japan is over £200!! ), therefore, £10 is another blow to already expensive charges. In 2004 the Government imposed APD at £5 for short-haul flights and £20 for long-haul flights, but it has gone up and up since then!

The Daily Telegraph accuses this APD increase as unfair for the ordinary British holidaymaker. As in the easyJet newspaper ad above, private jet customers and cargo plane don’t have to pay APD. Also Premium Economy class with slightly bigger leg-rooms than Economy is hit the hardest – it is categorized in “Premium Cabins”, instead of “Economy Cabin,” together with Business and First Class which are much spacious than Premium Economy. Furthermore, originally APD was introduced to the public as a “green” tax, but not a penny has been spent on environmental causes. I guess another excuse for the government to rip us off to increase tax revenues. The Daily Telegraph starts a campaign to stop this tax on travel – please sign the petition!!
