Le Quattro Volte @ Renoir Cinema

Russell Square（ラッセル・スクエア）近くのRenoir Cinemaで、「Le Quattro Volte（四つのいのち）」を観た。この映画はイタリア南部カラブリア州の山村を舞台に、命が繋がっていく様子を描いた作品。2010年のカンヌ国際映画祭で話題になり、東京国際映画祭にも招待、最近日本でも公開された。→参考：ミケランジェロ・フランマルティーノ監督インタビュー

（＊注：ネタバレあり）イタリア半島の最南端、長靴のつま先に当たる部分に位置するカラブリア州は、美しい海と山々に恵まれた自然豊かな地方。映画は山々で草を食むヤギを世話する年老いた牧夫の話から始まる。肺か気管支系の病を患い、毎晩、教会を掃除した際に集められた塵を薬変わりに飲んでいたが（教会のような聖なる場所に落ちている塵には魔術的な力があるとする、シチリア地方の古い慣習。厳密にはカラブリアではない）、その塵を山でなくしてしまい塵を飲めなかった老人はその次の日、永眠する。そして場面は子ヤギの誕生のシーンに。少し成長したある日、子ヤギは他のヤギたちと共に山に出て行くが、途中溝にはまり、群れからはぐれてしまう。啼きながら必死に群れを探すが、広大な山の中で迷子になり、最後は樅の巨木の下で夜を過ごす。そして寒い冬が過ぎ、春の到来。800年の歴史を持つ再生の祭りのため、樅の巨木は切り出され、人々の手で村の広場に運ばれる。まっすぐそそり立つように立てられた木の周りで盛大に祭りがとり行われた後は、カラブリア独特の伝統的な炭焼き手法で、木炭に生まれ変わる。

セリフは一切ない。登場する人たちは、この役で2010年Palm Dog賞を受賞したプロの俳優（？）犬Vukを除き、全てその土地の住民。長回しで撮影された美しい映像は、そこに生きる人々や動物の暮らし、雄大な自然、そして人間と他の事物とのつながりを淡々と描き出し、ドキュメンタリー・タッチの美しい映像詩に仕上がっている。物質文明が進み、世界の多くの場所で失われてしまった、人間と自然が共生する場所。でも実際はイタリアの田舎町でも、最新モデルの車がところ狭しと並び、最新のファッションに身を包んだ若者の手にはスマートフォン。インターネットも衛星テレビも完備している。イタリアの辺境の地（M談）と言われるカラブリア州も例外ではないと思うが、そういう部分は上手く排除されている。いかにも外国人の郷愁をそそる映画で、インテリのイギリス人映画批評家たちの評判も押し並べていい。かくいう私もそういう失われた古き良き時代を上手く映像化したこの映画に魅了された一人なのだ。

We saw an Italian movie, “Le Quattro Volte (The Four Times)” at Renoir Cinema near Russell Square. This is a documentary style movie about cycles of life and nature, set in a remote mountain village in Calabria in Southern Italy.

Calabria, located at the “toe” of the Italian peninsula, is a region with beautiful coastline and the mountains. The movie starts with a story of an old shepherd, who lives in a quiet village perched high on the hills and herds goats traveling around mountains. He is sick, and takes the ‘sacred’ dust collected on the church floor everyday, believing that it will cure him (actually it is an old Sicilian tradition, not Calabrian). One day he loses the dust and can’t take it, and dies the day after. Then screen changes to a scene of a birth of baby goat. One day the little goat goes out to a mountain with other goats, but falls behind the group by being trapped in a ditch. The goat desperately cries for help, wandering the mountains, but can’t find the group. Exhausted, the baby goat sleeps under a big fir tree. Winter passes and spring comes. The tree is cut down and trimmed, and is dragged by villagers to erect in a square for a 800-year old festival. After the festival, the tree is cut in many pieces and is transformed into charcoals in a traditional Calabrian charcoal kiln.

There are no lines, no narrations. All you hear is the sounds of nature, undistinguishable voices of the villagers, and barking of a dog (and it is quite loud). Everyone in the movie is a non-professional local, except a professional actor dog Vuk, which won the Palm Dog award 2010 (he did an excellent job!). The film, using a lot of long shots, portrays a simple life of the villagers and animals and great landscape of the region without any special effect, and is absolutely beautiful and poetic. The lost world where humans coexist with nature without trying to control it. The movie makes us believe that it still exists somewhere even in a developed country such as Italy. But the truth is different, unfortunately. I see the latest cars parked everywhere and young people in trendy fashions with smart phones in any Italian countryside. Even grandmothers can enjoy satellite TV and internet. I don’t think Calabria, one of the least developed region in Italy (according to M), is an exception of materialism. However, the movie meticulously eliminates the ‘ugliness,’ and succeeds in satisfying non-Italians with a stereotypical image of Italian countryside, including intellectual and cultural British film critiques (see Rotten Tomatoes) – and me…

The Wenlock Arms Pub: London Design Festival 2010

家から一番近いパブで、そこを通らなければどこにも行けない交差点の角にある「Wenlock Arms（ウェンロック・アームズ）」の店先に、「London Design Festival」と「Icon Design Trail」の看板が立った。2003年に始まったLondon Design Festival（ロンドン・デザイン・フェスティバル）は、世界で最も重要なデザイン・イベントの一つで、9日間の期間中、160以上のミュージアムやデザイン会社、ショップ、ギャラリーなどが参加、200以上のイベントや展示が行われる。その一環として、Wenlock Armsの向かいにオフィスを構えるデザイン会社・Established & Sonsは期間中、パブのスペースを使って、その哀愁漂う年季の入った狭い店内に、カラフルでモダンなデザインの椅子やテーブル、壁時計などを持ち込み、デザイン・ショールームに仕上げた（詳細）。中にいる客たちも、そのインテリアのミスマッチさと同様、何十年も毎日通っているような近所の常連方と、デザイン関係者らしいヨソ者が混在している。

今のアパートに住んで、かれこれ5年以上経つが、イギリスの伝統的なエール・ビールがあんまり好きではないせいもあるけれど、狭い店内に常連がたむろい、よそ者を寄せ付けない雰囲気（あくまで私の印象です）のWenlock Armsには入ったことがなかった。でも、タイムアウト誌で、ロンドンで「Real Ale（真のエール）」が飲めるベスト・パブの一つに選ばれた（記事）、このパブに入るいいチャンスだった。取りあえずお薦めのエールをハーフ・パイント（285ml）で注文。味はやっぱり他のエール同様少し酸っぱくて好みじゃないけれど、値段は何と£1.50。気取ったカフェのコーヒーより安い。

でも、1836年に創業、1994年に再オープンしたこのWenlock Arms、10月か11月には取り壊されることになったそうだ。ウェブサイトでは、この名店を救おうという機運も盛り上がっているが（londonistブログ他）、バブル時代の日本のように再開発の進むこのエリアで、生き残れるだろうか。通りがかりによく見かける、飼い主のおばさんとこのパブに通っている犬（この方のブログの一番下の写真に写っている）も、Wenlock Armsがなくなったら淋しいに違いない。

ところで「パブ」の名の由来は、「パブリックハウス（Public House：コミュニティの社交の場）」だと、今日まで知らなかった。。。

We saw signboards of “London Design Festival” and “Icon Design Trail” in front of Wenlock Arms, the closest pub from us and we cannot go anywhere without going through in front of it. Established in 2003, the London Design Festival is one of the world’s most important annual design events. The nine-day Festival program is made up of over 200 events and exhibitions staged by around 160 partner organizations such as museums, design firms, shops, and galleries. As a part of it, a design firm Established & Sons, situated just across the street, decorated the Wenlock Arms with colorful and modern furniture and wall clocks, and transformed this historical but a bit shabby space into its design showroom (detail). The small pub was filled with mixed clienteles during this time, hard-core old regulars and a design crowd.

It’s been over 5 years since we moved in this current apartment, but we’ve never been to the Wenlock Arms just a stone’s throw, partly because I am not a big fan of British traditional Ale, but more than that, I thought the pub was exclusive to regulars (just my impression) and I would feel a fish out of water. But this event is a great opportunity for us to step into this well reputed pub, which was chosen as one of the London’s best real ale pubs by the Time Out magazine.  I ordered a half-pint (285ml) of ale recommended by a bartender. The taste is a bit sour for me and not my cup of tea as other ales, but the price is only £1.50 – even cheaper than a cup of espresso at a fancy café!

The Wenlock Arms, first opened as a pub in 1836 and was reopened in 1994, however, is now under threat of demolition – not sure when, but probably October or November. There are some people and online community trying to save the pub, including londonist, but I am afraid if they can make it under a big wave of redevelopment sweeping the neighborhood. A dog, which I often see with his (or her?) owner at the pub when I walk by, will be sad if his beloved pub is gone (he is in the photo on the bottom of this blog)…

…By the way, it was only today that I learned that ‘pub’ came from ‘public house’!

Carnaby Street 50th Anniversary

2010年は、カーナビー・ストリート（Carnaby Street）の50周年記念の年。60年代に、モッズやヒッピー・ファッションの中心地であったカーナビー・ストリートに、独立系のブティックやデザイナーたちが店を構え、また周辺の通りには、様々なアングラのミュージック・バーがあった。Wardour Streetの角にあった伝説的なクラブ・Marquee Clubでは、ビートルズやザ・フー、ローリング・ストーンズなどが演奏し、彼らがたむろしたカーナビー・ストリートは、スウィンギング・ロンドンで、もっともクールな場所になった。

今もカーナビー・ストリートは、ロンドンの代表的なショッピング・ストリートの一つで、いつも観光客や若者で賑わっている。メイン・ストリートであるカーナービー・ストリートや周辺の小さな通り、Kingly court（キングリー・コート）、Newburgh Quarter（ニューバーグ・クォーター）など一帯には、ファッションや靴などのショップなどのほか、カフェやバー、パブ、レストランが並ぶ。

50周年を記念し、2010年は1年を通して、ファッションやデザイン、音楽に関連したイベントやフェスティバルが行われる予定。写真は、2月から開催されている展覧会で、カーナビー・ストリートの16世紀から現在までの歴史、特に60年代を中心に解説している。空き店舗を利用したと思われるこの展覧会は、ちょっと薄暗〜い感じで展示品のサイズも小さく、スペースを有効利用できてない感じ。写真もファッションも、もっとたくさん展示してほしかった。でも奥の左にあるブースでやっている、カーナビー・ストリートの歴史のビデオはなかなか面白い。

Year 2010 is Carnaby Street‘s 50th Anniversary. By the 1960s, Carnaby Street became an iconic fashion destination for he Mod and hippie styles. Many independent fashion boutiques and designers were located as well as various underground music bars in the surrounding streets. With bands such as The Beatles, The Who, and Rolling Stones appeared in the area to work with the legendary Marquee Club located round the corner in Wardour Street, and shopped and socialized, it became one of Swinging London‘s coolest destination.

Today Carnaby Street is still one of the main shopping street in London and attracts many young people and tourists. The area including main Carnaby Street and surrounding streets as well as Kingly court and the Newburgh Quarter, offers fashion stores and boutiques as well as cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants.

Throughout 2010, Carnaby streets will host various events and festivals featuring fashion, design and music. Kicking off in February with an exhibition which includes a detailed history of the area, from the 16th Century to the present day, especially focusing on the sixties. This exhibition, using an empty store space, is a bit dark and the materials exhibited are rather too small. There is a big unused space in the middle and I wish they can show us more its iconic fashions and photos. However, I quite enjoyed the video being played on the back, showing the history of the street, especially during the hype in 60’s.

Croatian Supporters in Hight Spirits @ Piccadilly Circus

今日、リージェント・ストリートを歩いていると、どこかからたくさんのだみ声がが聞こえてきた。よくみると、赤と白の格子模様のそろいのシャツを着た集団が、ピカデリー・サーカスの噴水前に集まって、気勢を上げている。そう言えば、今日はサッカーのワールド・カップ（W杯）2010予選のイングランド対クロアチア戦があることを、ふと思い出した。クロアチア人のサポーターたちは、皆ビールを飲みながら、歌ったり叫んだり、赤ら顔でだいそう盛り上がり、辺りはスーパーの買い物袋とビールの缶が散乱していた。

クロアチアと言えば、イングランド・チームがEURO2008（UEFA欧州選手権）予選で敗れ、まさかの本戦出場を逃した因縁の相手。だから、サッカー発祥地の自負を持つイングランド・チームの、来年夏のワールドカップ本戦出場にかける意気込みは強く、イタリア人コーチ、ファビオ・カペッロのもと、欧州予選で負けなし8連勝中。今日も、グループ２位のクロアチアと対戦し、5−1で完勝。見事、屈辱のEURO2008予選での雪辱を果たした。あんなに盛り上がっていたクロアチア・ファン、今頃はやけ酒だろうか。

When we were walking down on Regent street, we heard screaming and shouting from somewhere. We looked around, and saw that a large group of people in white and red cross stripes shirts gathering around the fountain in the middle of Piccadilly Circus. Then I realized that there were a World Cup 2010 qualifying match England versus Croatia tonight. Red-faced Croats supporters were singing or shouting in high spirits with beer cans on their hands. There were supermarket plastic bags and beer cans all over the place.

Croatia is the team that ended England’s hopes of reaching Euro 2008, and hurt the pride of England as the birthplace of soccer. Therefore the England team must feel an enormous pressure to go to World Cup 2010. So far England team has been doing great under the Italian coach Fabio Capello. England beat Croatia by 5-1 tonight  and made a record of an eighth successive win of a qualifying campaign. England got their pride back and secured qualification for next summer’s World Cup in South Africa. The Croats supporters we saw today probably get drunk again in disappointment now.
