Frieze Masters 2013 @ Regent’s Park

Frieze Londonと同時期に同じくリージェンツ・パーク内で開催されていたFrieze Mastersは、同じ主催者が企画した歴史的アートや古典芸術のアートフェアで、去年から始まった。130の参加ギャラリーのうち、106がメインセクションにブースを構え、残り24は、1つのギャラリーが1人の20世紀アーティストを扱うというコンセプトのSpotlightセクションに出展。古代や中世の作品、ブリューゲルやベラスケスといった巨匠の作品から、フランシス・ベーコン、アレクサンダー・カルダー、パブロ・ピカソ、ジャクソン・ポラック等、20世紀アートまで、幅広いタイプの作品が一堂に会した。

残念ながら閉館ギリギリに行ったので、じっくり観察する暇はなかったが、人が多くてごちゃごちゃした感のあるFrieze Londonに比べ、こちらの方が広々としていて落ち着いた雰囲気。終わる間際で人が少なかったせいもあるけれど、時に挑戦的・刺激的でもあるコンテンポラリーアートと比べ、古典芸術や宗教芸術など扱う作品の性質の違いもあるだろう。

Coinciding with and within walking distance of Frieze London, Frieze Masters is the fair for historical art organised by Frieze and started from last year. This year, 130 world’s leading galleries participated, 106 in the main section and 24 in the Spotlight section dedicated to solo presentations of artists of the 20th century. The fair brought different types of art, ranging from the ancient & medieval era and old masters such as Breughel and Velázquez through to art of the 20th century including works by Francis Bacon, Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock.

Unfortunately I went the pavillion just before the closing time and I didn’t have much time to observe carefully. But in general, in compare to busy and rather chaotic Frieze London, Frieze Masters was more tranquil and serene, not only because there were less people before closing but also due to its unprovoked nature of historical and religious art.

Work by Richard Long in the section of Spotlight, that is dedicated to solo presentations of artists working throughout he 20th century.

Frieze Art Fair 2013 @ Regent’s Park

今年11回を迎える、 10月恒例のアートイベント・Frieze Art Fair（10月17日〜20日）に行ってきた（参考：2010年・2011年）。今年は世界中から152のコンテンポラリーアート・ギャラリーが集結、2000人の有名・新進気鋭アーティストの作品が会場を彩った。

商業アートフェアであるから、気に入った作品があれば買う事は可能。値段は書かれていないが、新聞等の記事によれば、とても私たちの手の届く額ではないらしい。展示されている作品は、美術館に展示されていてもおかしくないクオリティだし、参加ギャラリーは、多くの時間と金を費やして、自慢のコレクションをわざわざロンドンにまで持ってくる訳だから、そりゃ安物は売らない。このアートフェアは金持ち、しかもただの金持ちじゃなく大金持ちをターゲットにしてるのだ。だから会場内には、大金を投資、または鑑賞用に作品を買おうというお金持ちがウロウロしている。もちろん、私を含め、クオリティの高いコンテンポラリーアートを見たいがために来る人もたくさんいる。フェアには、£32（Frieze Londonのみ）か£50（Frieze London + Frieze Masters）を払ってチケットを買えば、誰でも入場できる。経費をある程度チケット代で賄うと言う意味もあるけれど、金持ち相手の金儲けビジネスと批判されないために一般人も入れているという噂も。

I went to see the annual art event in October, 11th Frieze Art Fair (reference: 2010 / 2011). This year, the fair brings 152 renown contemporary galleries from 30 countries with work of 2,000 known and emerging artists.

It is a commercial fair and you can buy one of the works exhibited if you like, but there is no price tag and it is not cheap, as you can imagine. The fair obviously targets rich, not just rich but very rich. Works you see at the fair are museum-level quality, and galleries have spent a lot of money and efforts traveling to London with their collection of expensive artworks. In fact the fair is full of people looking for something to spend their fortunes for investment or just for fun, though there are also many people like me just there to appreciate vast number of contemporary artwork. The fair do accepts normal people with a ticket (£32 Frieze London only or £50 Frieze London + Frieze Masters) to pay off some expenses, and also probably because they believe that they wouldn’t be criticized that it is just for millionaires / billionaires.

2013 Serpentine Gallery Pavillion by Sou Fujimoto

2013年度のサーペンタイン・ギャラリー夏季限定パビリオン（10月20日まで）をデザインしたのは、トータルで13人目、日本人3人目となる、建築家の藤本壮介氏。過去世界に名だたる建築家が手がけてきたこの栄誉ある建築プロジェクトに、41歳の最年少で抜擢された（過去ブログ参照：2009年 & 2010年）。

ジャングルジムを連想させる、直径20mmの鉄製の白い棒を格子状に組み合わせた軽量の建物は、期間中多目的スペースとして使用されている。訪れた人たちは、色々な高さに取付けられた透明なアクリル板の上に座って、読書したりお喋りしたり考えにふけったり、中にあるフォートナム＆メイソンのカフェでお茶したり、思い思いに時を過ごしている。建築家のせいではないのだけれど、日が経ちアクリル板が少し汚れていて、近くで見るより外から、しかも全体が見渡せる少し離れた場所から見る方がベター。違う角度から見ると、違った印象になるので、訪れた際は是非、ぐるりと一回りしてみて。

The annual Serpentine Gallery Pavillion 2013 (until October 20) is designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. He is the 13th in total and the 3rd Japanese architect to design this prestigious temporary architecture, and is the youngest of all at the age of 41 (reference: 2009 & 2010 articles).

This lightweight and semi-transparent latticed structure of 20mm steel poles is utilized as a multi-purpose social space. Visitors can sit down on acrylic discs of any level and enjoy reading, chatting or meditating. Or you can relax with a cup of tea or coffee at Fortnum & Mason café inside the pavillion. It’s not architect’s fault, but acrylic discs got dirty a little bit over time, and to me it looks better from outside, further enough to see the whole view. Also looking at the pavillion from different angles give you a different impression – not only see inside or from one point, but also go around (and around) when you visit.

Simon Starling: Phantom Ride / Tate Britain Commission 2013

毎年、テートの所蔵品やテート・ブリテンの歴史に呼応した作品の制作をアーティストに委託しているTate Britain Commission（2012年作品）。今年の作品は、2005年ターナー賞受賞者であるイギリス人アーティスト、Simon Starling（サイモン・スターリング）が制作した映像作品「Phantom Ride」（3月2日〜10月20日）で、Duveen galleriesに展示されている。

巨大スクリーンに映し出されるこの作品は、本物の作品とコンピュータで制作された映像を組み合わせ、過去の展示作品とギャラリーの歴史が時代を超えて幻影のように交錯する。Fionna BannerのJaguar戦闘機やウォーホルのエルヴィス・プレスリー等アート作品の横をすり抜けたと思うと、ドイツ軍のBlitz（ザ・ブリッツ）により、1940年に破壊されたギャラリーの瓦礫が現れる。面白いコンセプトだし、映像も音響も幻想的な雰囲気を醸し出しているけれど、すごく心打たれるほどではない。ギャラリーの歴史と栄光を表現するには、少し短かく、取り上げているアート作品も不十分な気がするのだ。

The Tate Britain Commission invites an artist to develop a new work in response to the Tate collection and the history of Tate Britain (see 2012 work). This year, British artist and 2005 Turner Prize winner, Simon Starling has created the film “Phantom Ride” (March 2 – October 20) that haunts the Duveen galleries with ‘ghosts’ of past exhibitions and history of the galleries.

The film, combining real objects and computer-generated works, projected on a huge screens, makes you feel like flying through time and through the past artworks such as Fionna Banner’s Jaguar jet fighter and Warhol’s Elvis Presley, and over the rubble of bomb-blast caused by the Blitz in 1940. Interesting concept, atmospheric, but not mind-blowing. Maybe a bit too short and incomplete to show a legacy of the galleries.

Transport for London New Fares 2013: Just Another Increase

ロンドンの交通運賃は、毎年1月に改定される。ただでさえ高い運賃が毎年のように値上げされるから、新運賃が発表されるとメディアは大きく取り上げ、インフレ以上の値上げ率だの何だのと批判の嵐になる。しばらくロンドンを留守にしていたので、値上げの事をすっかり忘れていたのだが、今日上のポスターを見て、1月2日に運賃値上げが実施されたのを知った。地下鉄とバスの運賃値上げ率は平均4.2%（詳細は、Transport for Londonウェブサイトで)。例を挙げると、

• ゾーン１内地下鉄運賃：オイスターカード使用時£2.10（10ペンス増）/ 現金使用時£4.50（20ペンス増)
• バス運賃：オイスターカード使用時£1.40（5ペンス増) / 現金使用時£2.40（10ペンス増)

2010年の運賃改定を取り上げた過去のブログの記事を読み返すと、プリペイド式オイスターカード使用時のバス運賃は2009年で£1だったから、4年で40％増。地下鉄運賃に至っては、当時の£1.6から何と50％増の計算になる。そして現在、ゾーン１内の地下鉄運賃はオイスターカードを持ってなければ£4.50！（今日のレートで約643円）オイスターカードを知らない旅行者が何も考えずに切符を買おうとすると、もの凄く高くてびっくりするだろう。ロンドンに行く方、着いたらすぐ、オイスターカードを買うように！

ちなみに、市が運営する貸自転車システム・Barclays Bike Hireも、30分以内の利用料無料は変わらないけれど、アクセス料は２倍も値上がりした。

• 24時間アクセス：£1→£2
• 週間アクセス：£5→£10
• 年間アクセス：£45→£90

電車賃値上げはさらにひどく、市内で値上げ反対デモが起きたほど（Evening Standard紙）。他県からロンドンに通勤している友人も、年間定期代が今年£5000（約71万4500円）を超えたと嘆いていた。この不況時に、通勤・通学の人たちや旅行者にはひどい仕打ちだ。

New year, new price. Every year transport fares in London change, and of course, always going up and never going down. So every year after the announcement of new fares, media criticises how terrible it is, like above inflation rate etc. I forgot about the fare change, but I saw the poster above on the street corner and realised that the fares have gone up from January 2. On the Tube and buses, fares increased by an average 4.2% (details @ Transport for London website). Examples of new fares as below:

• Single tube fare within Zone 1: £2.10 for pay as you go (10p↑) / £4.50 for cash (20p↑)
• Single bus fare: £1.40 for pay as you go (5p↑) / £2.40 for cash (10p↑)

I looked back my old blog entry about new fares of 2010, and found out that single bus fare with Oyster card was £1 in 2009 – which means that the fare has increased 40% in 4 years. Single zone 1 tube fare with Oyster card was £1.6 in 2009, and it is an increase of 50%!  Massive. And the cash fare for single tube fare within Zone 1 is £4.50 = about $7.14 / €5.36! A tourist to London who doesn’t know about the Oyster card be very surprised with this outrageous amount?! Be careful when you go to London – buy Oyster card as soon as you arrive the city.

In addition, Barclays Bike Hire access fees have gone up double as below, although up to 30 minute usage remains free.

• 24 hours access: £2 (£1↑)
• Weekly access: £10 (£5↑)
• Annual membership: £90 (£45↑)

Fare hikes for trains are even worse, and angry commuters hit the street for demonstration (Evening Standard). One of my friend who commutes to London complains that her annual train pass now cost over £5,000. Very nice gestures to commuters and tourists during the recession!
