AA Drive Confident: Refresher Driving Course

火山灰の影響もなく、無事、ロンドンに帰ってきた。ヨーロッパを旅行する際にいつも問題になるのが、レンタカー。ここヨーロッパでは、マニュアル車が主で、レンタカーでオートマ車を見つけるのは難しい。あっても車種が少なく、中型サイズ以上で料金もマニュアル車より割高だ。今回は幸いコンパクト車が見つかったけれど、マニュアル派のMには、常々、マニュアル車を運転できるよう、再度教習を受けるよう言われてきた。私は免許取得こそマニュアル車だったけれど（しかも、かなり昔）、長年オートマに慣れた身には、マニュアル車運転はかなり怖い。ついつい先延ばしにしていたが、少し前、AA（Automobile Association／自動車協会。日本のJAFに相当）で、受講資格ありと認定されれば、無料で2時間のペーパードライバー教習「Drive Confident」を受けられることを発見、早速このプログラムを申請した。

AAの統計によると、イギリスには、長年運転していないペーパードライバーが約60万人いるそうだ。AA Charitable Trust for the Environment and Road Safety（AAの慈善団体）が主催する「Drive Confident」は、計2000人のペーパードライバーに、AA認定の運転教官による2時間の無料教習（1時間ずつ2回か、1回2時間どちらかを選べる）を提供している。

2010年3月に設立された新しいプログラムだから、早く申し込んだおかげで、この教習を享受できたのかな。4月頭に、AAウェブサイトから申請してから2週間以上が過ぎ、すっかり忘れていた頃に、AAから「おめでとうございます、あなたはDrive Confidentの対象者に選ばれました」という電話がかかってきた。今回の旅行には間に合わなかったけれど、今日その1回目の教習を受けた。前日は、教習に先立って送られてきた、ペーパードライバーが直面しがちな問題を掲載した35ページの冊子を読んで勉強。今日の教習では、まだ20代半ばと思われる優しげな教官Aくんは、緊張しまくっていた私に、丁寧に教えてくれた。おかげで、何度かエンストしたけれど、少し勘が戻ってきたように思う。

次の教習は1週間後。その前に、最低5時間以上は練習しないといけないとマニュアルにあり、Aくんにもそうアドバイスされた。言い出しっぺのくせに面倒くさがるMを連れ出し、以前ブログで書いたStreetcarで車を借りて練習しようと、今はやる気満々の私。

I came back to London last week without being affected by ash clouds (thank God!). The issue we always encounter when we travel in Europe is renting an automatic car. Majority of European drive a manual car and it is quite hard to find an automatic car to rent in Europe. Even if an automatic car is available, there is not much choice (usually intermediate class or bigger) and more expensive than a manual car. Luckily we could get automatic compact car this time, but pro-shift gear M has been always telling me to take a driving lesson again to be able to drive a manual car. I got my license with a shift gear quite long ago and am so used to drive an automatic car, so I am quite fearful to drive a manual car. I had been procrastinating to take a driving lesson, but I found that AA (Automobile Association) provide a free 2-hour refresher driving course ‘Drive Confident‘ if you are eligible, so I applied the course.

According to AA survey, 600,000 have been off the road so long they have ‘forgotten how to drive’ in UK. The AA Charitable Trust for the Environment and Road Safety offers 2,000 free Drive Confident packages (two one-hour sessions or one two-hour session with a fully-qualified AA driving instructor) designed to help drivers improve their confidence and skills.

The program is just launched in March 2010, and I probably could get it as I applied just after the scheme started. I applied in early April via AA website and after over two weeks, I received a “congratulations, you are qualified for our program!” phone call from AA, when I completely forgot about the application. It was just few days before our departure and I couldn’t make it before this trip, but I did my first session today. Last night, I read 35-page booklet AA sent me to review some issues lapsed drivers have to deal with. I was quite nervous before the session, but my twenty-something young and gentle instructor Mr. R was so nice and made me feel a bit more confident in using a shift gear, though I made the car engine stopped few times during the session.

My next session is exactly a week after. I have to practice minimum of five hours on my own before the next session, according to the AA booklet and Mr. R also asked me to. M forced me to take a lesson but is quite reluctant to sit next me during my practice, but I will rent a car from Streetcar (I wrote in this blog in the past) and whip him to be my companion to prepare myself for the next session!

Severe Cold Weather and Traffic Chaos in UK

最近のロンドンは寒い。気温は毎日0度前後。それでも週末は晴れたから良かったけれど、今日は午後に大雪が降り、ロンドンの街並みも雪に覆われた。利用していたバスが、事故か何かの影響でその先が通行止めになったからと途中で止まってしまい、残りは歩いて帰るはめに。4駅程だったけれど、ベチャベチャの雪の上を30分強歩くのは辛い。それに、そこかしこに悪ガキが隠れていて、ぼーっとしていると、雪の玉がどこからか飛んでくる。

イギリスだけでなく、今はヨーロッパ中が大寒波に見舞われており、交通機関は大混乱。クリスマス帰省・旅行客の足に支障をきたしている。チューブ（地下鉄）や鉄道、航空便は遅延・欠航が相次ぎ、路面凍結や雪で交通事故も多数報告されている（BBC News）。先ほどのニュースでは、ルートン空港が悪天候のため閉鎖されたという。フランス・ベルギーとイギリスを結ぶユーロスターは、今日でもう3日間運休しており、100,000人もの乗客が足止めを食らっている。19日には英仏海峡トンネルで、ユーロスターいわく「fulffy French snow（フランスでのふわふわした雪）」が原因の故障で、列車5台が立ち往生。何台かの客は救出されたそうだが、2,000人以上が数時間から最長16時間もの間、車内に閉じ込められた。以下のビデオは車内で15時間を過ごした怒れる家族。ユーロスター側から何の説明もなく、乗組員のフランス人は英語が喋れず（喋らず？）。その間飲み物も食べ物もなし。トイレは2つだけで、水が流れないので、排泄物が8cm以上も溜まっていたそう。電気もつかず、暗闇の中夜を過ごしたそう。ひどい話だ。

ユーロスターは明日から部分的に復旧する予定だそうだが、この運休中の予約客を優先、その後は老人やどうしても利用が必要な人を優先に割り当てていくので、明日以降の予約客は本当に必要な場合以外は利用しないよう、忠告している（下は、新聞に掲載された、ユーロスターからのお知らせ）。この1件でユーロスター、そしてイギリス人のフランス人に対する評判もガタ落ちしてしまった。

It’s been freezing cold in London recently. The temperature is around 0°. It was OK on weekend as it was sunny as well, but today there was heavy snow in the afternoon, covering the city in white. The bus I took suddenly stopped and didn’t travel further, due to the accident or something ahead and it was forced to wait. Though it was only 4 stops away from home and 30 minutes walk, it was hard to walk on the slippery wet and melted snow, going through a thread of random snowball attacks by obnoxious kids hiding behind walls or in a park in front of my apartment.

Not only UK but Europe is suffering with severe winter weather and traffic chaos, which affects tens of thousands of people who travel during the holiday season. In the UK, delays and cancellations are reported for many flights, trains, and tube lines, and Luton airport — closed due to snow. On the road, traffic jams have been seen due to the snow and accidents and AA has been busy rescuing people on the road (BBC News). Eurostar, which connects UK and France / Belgium, has suspended all the services for 3 days and has disrupted 100,000 people’s travel plan, after “fulffy French snow” in France created excessive condensation in the channel tunnel between England and France, causing electrics to fail and 5 trains to become stuck on December 19. More than 2,000 people were trapped inside the tunnel – some trains were evacuated, but other passengers were forced to remain on board, for hours up to 16 hours, without food and water supply! Below is the video of a furious family, stuck in the train for 15 hours; they complained that the passengers were treated like animals and with no explanation, no food, water, oxygen, electricity and light, no medics, with only 2 available toilets with no flushing water and 3 inches of excrement (or poo) and urine piled up… They were really mad at French attendants, for being rude and ignorant, and ‘those French even didn’t speak English’ (or acted that they didn’t??).

Eurostar is expected to resume partial service tomorrow on Tuesday, but the priority will be given to the elderly and the vulnerable, and passengers that should have travelled on Friday and Saturday. Eurostar advises to customers holding booking in the next few days from tomorrow is to only travel if it is absolutely necessary (as in the ‘notice’ published on the newspaper). With the incident, the way Eurostar handle of the accident, Eurostar’s reputation has gone down the drain, as well as the British image of French people…
