easyJet’s Allocated Seating Now on Every Flight

最近、格安航空会社のeasyJet（イージージェット）でフライトの予約をしたのだけれど、その時、今はeasyJetの全フライトで事前に席が選べるようになった事に気づいた。easyJetは、約200万人が利用したフライトで試験運用を実施。その結果、71％の乗客がこのallocated seating（座席割当）に対して好感を感じたという結果を踏まえ、11月27日から正式採用するに至ったそうだ。

飛行機の乗客を立たせるのは安全上問題があるので、基本、全ての乗客に席は与えられている。でも以前は、他の大手航空会社のように事前に席は割り当てられず、機内で先着順で席を選ぶシステムだったが、新システムでは、チケット予約時に席の事前選択が可能になった（予約後でもOK）。ただ、格安航空会社の辞書に「無料」という文字はない。allocated seating料金は、座席カテゴリーによって3種類に分かれている（以下参照）。allocated seatingを選択しない場合は、以前の通り、機内で先着順に席を選ぶ事になる。

• £12： 1列目の足元の広い席 + Speedy Boarding（専用チェックインカウンターの利用及び優先的搭乗）
• £8：2〜5列目（A319）または 2〜6列目A320の前方座席、及び足元広めの非常口横の座席 + Speedy Boarding
• £3：その他の座席

easyJet plus!メンバーや、高額の特典付きFlexi Fareの利用客は、Speedy Boarding及び無料で座席選択が可能。

allocated seatingの導入は、良い席を確保するために前もって行列に並んだり、機内で他の乗客と席の取り合いをしなくてすむようになるので、大歓迎。他の格安航空会社も追随する事を望む。

Recently we booked a flight on UK’s no-frill airline easyJet, and we found that now we can select a seat of your choice in advance on every flight when you book. easyJet has introduced its allocated seating on all of its flights from November 27, 2012, after a completion of trials; 71% of nearly 2-million passengers who have travelled on an allocated seating flight, think positive about the scheme.

Of course nothing is free on discount airlines. All passengers are allocated a seat for free on board on a first come, first served basis, but if you prefer, you can select a specific seat for a fee when you book flights, or adding them later. You can choose not to pay, but you have to choose a seat on board as before, and it is not guaranteed if you can sit your preferred seat. The allocated seating is available for three price ranges.

• £12 for Aisle 1 seats with extra legroom + Speedy Boarding with dedicated check-in desk and priority boarding to board first
• £8 for up front seats (row 2-5 on A319 or 2-6 on A320) or emergency exit seats with extra legroom + Speedy Boarding
• £3 for any other seat

easyJet plus! annual cardholders and Flexi Fare customers are able to select a seat free of charge as well as Speedy Boarding.

This is great, so that we don’t have to wait on a queue well in advance or don’t have to fight with other passengers for better and adjacent seats! Hope other discount airlines will follow easyJet.

British Airways’ 12 Days Strike Blocked | Flyglobespan Gone Bust

今日は、航空関係のビッグニュース2件が，イギリスのメディアを賑わせた。

1つ目は良いニュース。14日に発表された、12月22日から1月2日までの、12日にも渡るブリティッシュ・エアウェイズ（BA）のストが、決定過程に違法があった、また時期的に会社への打撃が大きすぎるとして、裁判所により差し止められた。これによって、クリスマスを含む年末年始に旅行を予定している約100万の利用客に影響が出るストが回避された。私たちも、今年のクリスマスはイタリアへ、と計画していたのでひと安心。

格安航空会社や賃金の安い外国の航空会社との競合により、BAの損失は1日あたり160万ポンドに上り、年金基金は会社資産を上回る37億ポンドの赤字、また従来なら稼ぎ時の4～9月の純損失は、過去最大の2億9200万ポンドを計上していた。そのため、BAは1700人の人員削減や社員のパートタイムへの転換（2010年までの削減人員数は4900人）、搭乗する乗組員の数の削減、2年間の賃金凍結などのリストラ策を次々に実行したが、客室乗務員らが加入するイギリス最大の労働組合ユナイト（Unite）は、これらが組合の合意なしに進められたとして憤慨、92％の組合員の賛成投票を受けて今回のストライキを決定していた。ストになれば、1日あたり1000万～3000万ポンド（約14億5000万～43億5000万円）の損失、また予定されているスペインのイベリア航空との合併にも支障が出ると見られていた。BA側は、この投票には既に退職している1000人の票が違法に含まれているとして、15日、裁判所にストライキ差し止め命令を求めていた。

しかしこのスト、クリスマス、年末年始と時期が悪すぎる。それにこのスト決定には、組合内の権力闘争が絡んでいたという。これでは人々の理解を得られないのも無理はない。しかも12日！あり得ない。報道によると、BAの客室乗務員の平均年収は、ヴァージン・アトランティック航空の約2倍、イージージェットの約1.5倍の2万9900ポンド（約430万円）。待遇はイギリスの航空会社でもちろんトップである。その割に、BAの職員のサービスは他の航空会社に比べて、大差はない。このご時世、生き残るためには今のままではやっていけないのは自明の理だ。日本航空もアリタリアもそうだけれど、BAの組合員も昔の国営航空会社、殿様商売の頃の待遇が忘れられないらしい。無理言っても、いざとなれば国が助けてくれると思ってるんだろう。でも、国も財政赤字が増大しており、赤字対策もままならない会社に無条件に税金を注ぐことは、世論が許さない。組合が強硬な以上、BAはいったん潰れて、新しい体制で再出発するしかないんじゃないかな。

そして2つ目は悪いニュース。スコットランド最大の航空会社、Flyglobespan（フライグローブスパン）が倒産し、予定されていたフライトは今日をもって全てキャンセルされた。これにより、スペイン、ポルトガル、キプロス、エジプトを中心に、約4500人の搭乗客が帰る便を失った。またこれにより、約800人が職を失い、フライトを予約した10万人以上の人々の足に支障が出るそうだ。エジンバラが拠点のこの航空会社、今日ニュースを見るまで聞いたことがなかった。景気の良い時に、新しい格安航空会社が次々と誕生したけれど、この不況の中、淘汰が進むと予想されている。客の立場としては、航空会社や行き先のチョイスが少なくなるのは悲しい。競争が減るにつれ、激安だった航空券の時代も終わるかもしれない。

2 big news related to an Airline industry struck the media headlines in UK today.

First news is a good one: High Court blocks a planned 12-day strike (Dec 22 to Jan 2) by British Airways (BA) cabin crew, after ruling that the strike ballot was illegal, and saves more than a million people’s travel plans during this busy period. We are so pleased to hear this news, as we are planning to visit M’s family in Italy for Christmas with British Airlines.

Due to the harsh competition with no-frills airlines and foreign airlines from the countries with cheaper wages, BA suffers daily loss of £1.6 million and £3.7 billions pension fund deficit, and reported a record pre-tax loss of £292m during April to September, traditionally its most profitable trading period. Struggling BA have taken cost cutting measures such as 1700 job cuts (total of 4900 to 2010), a slash of the number of crews on board, and a two-year pay freeze for cabin crew. But Unite, the largest labor union in UK, is upset as these measures have been taken without a negotiation with them, and announced the strike on Dec 14, backed with 92% of ‘yes’ votes of the members in the ballot. If strike would have taken place, it would have cost BA £10 to £30 millions a day and would have affected the merger with Spanish Iberia Airlines in a bid to survive. BA took the issue to the High Court on Dec 15, to halt the strike as illegal, because the ballot included 1,000 workers who have been made redundant.

The strike was planned in the busiest period of the year, and it is reported that the decision of the strike grounded in internal politics – these made majority of the people angry and be the company’s side. And 12 days? No way!  BA cabin crews earn average of £29,900, twice as much as the wage of Virgin Atlantic’s £14,400 and 50% higher than easyJet’s average crew wage of £20,200, and it is the highest pay in UK – who would feel sorry for them with their ‘worsening’ condition in the recession?? I don’t think the quality of service by BA crews and workers are better than their rivals either. How do union members believe that their company can win the competition against the rivals with cheaper price and/or better service, without cutting cost?? As other failing former national flagship airlines such as Japan Airlines and Alitalia, BA workers seems to cling to the good old time treatment without existence of its rivals, and may believe that the government will help the airline in the worst case. But time has changed. I don’t think the government with mounting debt can get taxpayer’s support to help them, if BA is not capable of implementing the survival plan because of the union’s stubborn “old militant” tactics. Maybe the best option is to make BA fail and to restart from scratch.

The second is the bad news. The biggest Scottish airline Flyglobespan failed after its parent company collapsed yesterday and all flights were cancelled. About 4,500 passengers were stranded, mostly in Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Egypt. It is expected tnearly 800 jobs would be lost and over 100,000 passengers will loose their reserved flights. I’d never heard or seen this Edinborough-based airline, until I heard this news today. Many new discount airlines were born in the years of good economy, but quite many of them are not doing well due to the economic decline, and probably some will disappear in the future – we customers will loose convenience and freedom of  choice in airlines and destination, and probably it will be the end of ultra-cheap flights as competition lessens.

Increases in UK Air Passenger Duty from Today – Air fares to rise!!

今日11月1日より、イギリスの航空旅客税（出国税、Air Passenger Duty）が値上げになった。2段階式値上げで、来年11月1日はさらに値上げとなる（以下の表参照）。エコノミーでヨーロッパ内ならたった£1の違いだが、長距離、例えば日本（Band C）なら、元の£40から25%増の£10値上がりの£50になる（来年はなんと£75！）。イギリスの航空券は、チケットの額面価格に加え、航空旅客税／出国税、各空港使用料、各航空会社規定のセキュリティーチャージ、燃料費等、その他諸々の費用が£200以上（ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズの例）になることもあり、£10でもばかにならない。2004年に税が導入された時は、短距離£5、長距離£20だったのが、どんどん上がっている。

今回の増税は、アンフェアだという声もある（デイリー・テレグラフの記事参照）。上記のeasyJetの新聞広告にもあるように、富裕層や企業向けのプライベート・ジェット（自家用機）や貨物便は無税だ。また、エコノミーよりもちょっと広いだけのプレミアム・エコノミークラスが、エコノミークラスではなく、ビジネスやファーストクラスと同等だというのも不公平だ。また、最初は環境税として導入された航空旅客税が、1ペニーも環境保護政策に使われていないと言う。結局政府の税収増加のための言い訳なんだろう。またテレグラフ紙は、航空旅客税撤回キャンペーンも行っている。増税反対の人は、是非署名を！

The first of two increases in UK Air Passenger Duty (APD) comes into effect today on November 1 (see the tables below). Tiny fraction of £1 increase for a European flight, but long-haul, for example APD for a flight to Japan (Band C) is now £50, £10 (25%) increase from £40 (next year will be astonishing increase to £75 – almost double!!). £10 increase may not sound a big deal, but airport tax, fuel surcharges, and other fees and charges in addition to APD are added to a ticket price (for British Airways casefor a flight to Japan is over £200!! ), therefore, £10 is another blow to already expensive charges. In 2004 the Government imposed APD at £5 for short-haul flights and £20 for long-haul flights, but it has gone up and up since then!

The Daily Telegraph accuses this APD increase as unfair for the ordinary British holidaymaker. As in the easyJet newspaper ad above, private jet customers and cargo plane don’t have to pay APD. Also Premium Economy class with slightly bigger leg-rooms than Economy is hit the hardest – it is categorized in “Premium Cabins”, instead of “Economy Cabin,” together with Business and First Class which are much spacious than Premium Economy. Furthermore, originally APD was introduced to the public as a “green” tax, but not a penny has been spent on environmental causes. I guess another excuse for the government to rip us off to increase tax revenues. The Daily Telegraph starts a campaign to stop this tax on travel – please sign the petition!!

Low-Cost Airlines in UK: Ryanair

昨日に続き、イギリスの主な格安航空会社について。1985年に設立されたRyanair（ライアンエアー）は、アイルランドのダブリンを拠点にする、ヨーロッパ最大の格安航空会社で旅客数ではヨーロッパ第三位。ヨーロッパと北アフリカ内に現在830ルートを持つ。ロンドンでのハブの空港は、スタンステッド空港。そのサービスは悪評高いが、価格は安い。「0.99ポンドから」という宣伝で話題を呼び、現在席数には限りがあるが、時期やルートにより、0.01ポンドという価格を提供している。魅力的だが、私自身はそんなに安い価格をこの目で見た事はないし、もし探せたとしても、後から述べるように、税金や様々な諸経費が加算され、結果そんなに安く乗れる事はあり得ない。CEOのMichael O’Leary（マイケル・オライリー）は、大手航空会社や航空業界への批判等、歯に衣着せぬ大胆な発言で、度々物議を醸すことで有名だ。

そして私のライアンエア体験談。ウェブサイトは、ちょっとごちゃごちゃしてて、いかにも格安航空会社という感じ。最初に提示された金額に加え、税金や手数料、オンラインチェックイン代５ポンド（空港でのチェックインは、当日40ポンドもとられる）、預け荷物が1個につき10ポンド、Priority Boarding（優先搭乗）3ポンド、そしてクレジットカード使用の手数料1人5ポンド等々、何かにつけ手数料が加算されていく。だから、ライアンエアーに乗った事がなければ、最後の支払い画面で最初に見たチケットの価格と違う合計額を見て、「騙された！」と思うかもしれない。それでも、私の乗ったフライトの価格は、ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズの半額程度だったから、仕方ない。預け荷物は15kgまで。他の航空会社は20kgまでなので、気をつけないと制限重量を超してしまう。アメリカに住むMの兄は、超過料金の説明を読んでいなかったらしく、大きなスーツケースで搭乗したため、かなりの額の超過料金を払わされたと怒っていた。なので、格安航空会社のチケットを買う前には、しっかりTerms & Conditionsを読んでおく方がいい。

搭乗ゲートは、先のイージージェットと違って、プライオリティ・ボーディングとその他の乗客の列が分かれていたので、それほどの混乱はなかった。飛行機の床はゴミだらけ。インフライトマガジンにはゴミが付着していて、手が汚れた。前に乗ったライアンエアーのフライト内ははきれいな時もあったので、今回は運が悪かったらしい。ウィキペディアによると、前のフライトが着陸してから次の離陸までの時間が短いから、十分掃除する暇がないのだそうだ。座席はこれまた掃除のしやすい革製だが、イージージェットより固めで座り心地は良くない。また座席前ポケットがなく、飲み物や読み物を入れられないのが不便。フライトはほぼ満席、座席の上の棚は無料の持ち込み手荷物で一杯。有料のフードサービス、デューティー・フリーやスクラッチ・カード（宝くじ）販売は、イージージェットと同じ。

出発前4時間前なら、フライトの変更も可能なのだが、変更画面からチケットの値段を見ると、新たに買うよりかなり価格が設定されているし、また手数料等考えると、新しくチケットを買った方が安い場合が多い。キャンセルの場合は、払い戻し不可。私たちも使えなかった航空券があったのだが、税金のみ返金できるが手数料がかかると言われたので、返金されても雀の涙だろう。

基本的にライアンエアーはあまり利用したくないのはやまやまなのだが、やはり安さにつられて、ついつい利用してしまうのだった。

Today’s topic is another budget airline in the UK, Ryanair. Established in 1985, Ryanair is the largest discount airline in Europe and third largest European carriers. The airline is based in Dublin, Ireland, and operates 830 routes in Europe and North Africa. Ryanair’s hub airport in London is Stansted Airport. The reputation of its service is notoriously bad, but its cheap prices still attract millions of people every year. Once Ryanair got huge attention with its advertising campaign, ‘price starts from £0.99’ and now offers £0.01 flight for limited number of seats on selected routes. Sounds too good to be true, and in fact, I have never seen such a cheap price on my own, and even if I could find, tax and all sort of fees would be added up at the end, as I explains later. Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, is known for his bad mouthing about the airline industry and among its regulators, and often causes an controversy.

My personal experience on Ryanair flight (so don’t believe it everything) was like this. Their website is crammed with too much information and well, it looks ‘cheap’. In addition to the suggested price, not only tax and fees but also all sort of fees would be added to the price, such as mandatory online check-in (£5@. If you don’t check in online, you have to pay £40 at the airport), check-in luggage (£10@), Priority Boarding (£3), Credit Card fee except Visa Electron (£5 per person), etc. etc… Therefore, if you gave never used Ryanair before, you may feel cheated when you see a total cost. However, even with all these fees added, our flight was almost half price of British Airways on the same route. Check-in luggage is up to only 15kg, in compare to 20kg for other airlines, and it is easy to surpass the limit if you are not careful. M’s brother who lives in USA, was very upset because he had to pay astronomic sum of excess luggage as he traveled with a huge luggage when he came to Europe. Well my suggestion is to read tiny written terms and conditions when you take no-frills airline flight.

The boarding gate, in compare to EasyJet, was more orderly as the lines were divided between Priority Boarding passengers and others. Inside the airplane was full of trash on the floor, and I got my hand dirty with their filthy in-flight magazine. According to Wikipedia, since Ryanair made a time in between flights so short that they don’t have much time to clean up their airplane. But not all the flights we took were dirty, for your peace of mind. The seat was also made of easy-to-clean leather but it was harder than the one on EasyJet. There was inconveniently no pocket on the seat for newspapers and stuffs. Flight was almost full as usual, and packed of free-of-charge hand luggage on the upper compartments. Sales of food and drinks, duty-free products and scratch cards were the same as EasyJet.

You can change the flight up to 4 hours before your flight, but when I tried to change my tickets, I concluded that it didn’t worth to change and just put it in the trash, considering a fee for change and changeable ticket prices which were strangely more expensive than buying a new ticket from scratch. Then I tried to cancel my tickets, I was told that tickets were no refundable but government tax could be refunded, and we had to pay a ‘fee’ for it.

I am not a big fan of Ryanair, but I always cannot resist their attractive price and end up traveling with Ryanair, as so many other passengers…

Low-Cost Airlines in UK: EasyJet

私の学生時代に比べ、航空運賃はずいぶん安くなったと思う。特に、EU域内の航空自由化が進められてきたヨーロッパでは、各国の格安航空会社がしのぎを削り、域内で20%以上、特にイギリスではブリティッシュ・エアウェイズを上回る50%のシェアを確保しているらしい。これらの格安航空会社は、旅行代理店等を持たず予約はインターネットと電話のみ、座席指定の廃止、機内食や飲料は有料等々、徹底してコストを削減して低価格を実現。まそのかわり、良質なサービスは期待できない（安いんだから仕方ない）。まあ、空飛ぶバスのようなものだ。でも、ヨーロッパ内なら数時間で大体どこへもいけるので、そのぐらいのフライト時間なら我慢できる。ただ、安いから、いつもほぼ満席。また座席指定がないため、搭乗前は早めに行って行列しないといけないが、ちゃんとした列がないことも多々あるため、時々押し合いへし合いのカオス状態となる。でも、この低価格のせいで、ヨーロッパではだれでも海外旅行ができるようになった。

今回の旅で、イギリス最大手EasyJet（イージージェット）とヨーロッパ最大手Ryanair（ライアンエア）をともに利用したので、これを機会に今日はイージージェット、明日はライアンエアについて書こうと思う。

オレンジ色の機体が目を引くイージージェットは、キプロス島出身の実業家、ステリオス・ハジ＝イオアヌ（Stelios Haji-Ioannou）によって1995年に設立。Lutonに本社を置く。現在、ヨーロッパを中心に、104空港を結ぶ、387ルートを擁し、2008年は4450万人の乗客を記録した。

感想。ウェブサイトは使い勝手が良く、出発希望日の前後３日のフライト情報・料金がすぐに出て来て、フライトを比較するのに何度もクリックする必要がない。またどの月が料金が安いかも提示してくれる。私が乗ったルートは、ちょうどイベントの最中だったので、格安航空会社としてはかなり高額だった。しかも、最近の格安航空会社の新戦略として、預け荷物には個別に課金される（1つにつき8ポンド）。20kgを超えると超過料金がかかるが、前もってオンラインで申し込むと割安になるそう。チケットを買う際は、旅行保険が自動的に加算されるので、必要ない場合は取り除く必要あり。レンタカーやホテル予約サイトとも提携していて、予約後はご丁寧に予約は必要か聞いてくる。オンライン・チェックインができるが、インターネット・カフェに行けなかったので、当日カウンターでチェックイン。搭乗ゲートは列を作るには狭く、人が四方八方から押し寄せてきて大混乱。イージージェットはSpeedy Boardingといって、8ポンド払うと優先的に搭乗できるシステムがあるが、先に搭乗できるはずの人でも人混みでゲートにたどり着くのに苦労していたようだ。残りの乗客は、チェックイン先着順で2グループに分けられ、その順に搭乗（なので早めにオンラインチェックインするのが得策）。座席は座り心地の良い柔らかい革製（ちなみに高級感を出すためではなく、掃除をしやすいためだそう）。手荷物は無料なので、許容サイズ以内のスーツケースで旅行する人も多く、座席上の棚は荷物でぎゅうぎゅうだ。そして、格安航空会社のフライトによくあるように、ほぼ満席。もちろんフードサービスは有料。デューティー・フリー商品はもちろんのこと、スクラッチ・カード（宝くじ）まで売っている（利益の足しにか）。こんな感じです。

In compare to when I was young, the price of airline tickets got much cheaper. EU promoted the open skies arrangements in the area and as a result, low-cost carriers won a share of over 20% in EU states, and of 50% in UK surpassing British Airways. These no-frills airlines have achieved the cheap price by eliminating travel agents (reservations can be made only on the internet and over the phone), no seat reservation, charging food and drinks on board and so on. It is a sort of ‘flying bus’, and you shouldn’t expect high quality services – you get what you pay. But you can fly to most places in Europe within few hours and you can bear with it. The flights are always almost full, and you have to be on the long and often disorderly lines to get on the board (therefore the boarding gate can be pretty chaotic), as the seats are not reserved. The great achievement of these egalitarian discount airlines is that now anyone can enjoy a dream holiday abroad.

In my trips in last 2 months, I happened to experience 2 big discount airlines, EasyJet (biggest in UK) and Ryanair (biggest in Europe), and would like to talk about EasyJet today and Ryanair tomorrow. EasyJet, with its eye-catching orange logo, was established by Cypriot entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou in 1995. The airline is based London Luton Airport and currently operates domestic and international scheduled services on 387 routes between 104 European and North African airports. In 2008, EasyJet carried 44.5 million passengers.

EasyJet website is easy to use, and it shows the flight information and prices of 3 days around your planned date of departure, as well as the ticket prices in other months. Unfortunately my flight was sort of expensive as it was in the midst of the event period. As an example of new sneaky strategy of low-cost airlines, you have to pay for your check-in luggage (£8@). Excess luggage over 20kg will be charged but you can pay an ‘discount’ price if you pay online in advance. Travel insurance is automatically charged on the process, and you have to remove it if you don’t want it before you pay. The airline has a collaboration with rent-a-car and hotel reservation sites and, will kindly ask you if you need anything, after you make a reservation. You can check-in online, but we checked in at the counter as we didn’t go to internet cafe. The boarding gate was too small and passengers rushed in to the gate from all over. Even many passengers with Speedy Boarding (priority boarding which costs £8) had a hard time to come closer to the gate with the chaos. The rests were divided in 2 groups based on the time they checked in, and went on board accordingly (therefore better to check-in online asap). The soft leather seat was pretty comfy, although not because the airline want to offer us a high quality service but just because leather is easyer to clean . The compartment above the seats were crammed, since hand luggage is free and many people traveled with small suitcases with the size allowed to bring in. As always on these budget airlines, the airplane was pretty full, like sardines. The food and drinks are not free, of course, and you can buy not only duty free products but scratch cards as well to try your luck.
