Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London Guide

Deck of Secretsが11月に発行した、ロンドンの朝食＆ブランチガイド「Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London」。タバコぐらいの大きさの箱に、ロンドンの高級店からカジュアルなカフェまで、現地ライターが厳選した新旧52店を紹介したカード（表はお店の写真と情報、裏は地図が印刷）が入っている。ちなみに、ジョーカーを除くトランプのカードの数も52、そして1年を週換算した数も52（＋1日）。週1回1店行くと、1年で全店制覇出来る計算になる。

2003年にオーストラリアのメルボルンで生まれたDeck of Secretsは、現在、ダイニングやブランチ、バー、ショッピング、スパなどのテーマ別に、メルボルン、シドニーなどオーストラリアのみならず、ニューヨーク、ロンドン、エジンバラ、香港、ダブリン、バルセロナ、モントリオールやバンクーバーなど世界の人気都市のガイドを25冊以上発行している。

このガイドと出会ったきっかけは、出版社から、エンジェルのオーストリアン・カフェ・Kipferlの写真を使わせて欲しいという連絡があったこと。出来上がった、この可愛いガイドを送って下さった。自分の写真が使われているから宣伝している訳ではなく（ブログに書いてくださいという依頼もありません）、Albion、Caravan、Lantana、Leila’s Shop、Look Mum No Hands!、J+A Cafe、St Ali、Milk Bar、St John Hotel、Dishoom、Hackney Pearlと、今まで私がブログで取り上げたところも多く、親近感を感じたから。それに、マーサ・スチュワート・リビング風のパステルカラーのパッケージもレイアウトもキュートだし、値段も£4.99とお手頃。またカード型なら、ガイドを持ち歩かなくても、お財布にお目当ての店のカードを一枚しのばせるだけでOK。iPhoneとWindows 7のアプリ版もあり。

“Breakfast & Brunch Secrets London” guide is published in November 2011 by Deck of Secrets. 52 places carefully chosen by local writers across London, from high end to casual, new and old, are included in this cigarette size box containing card-style guides – one place per card, a photo and information printed on the front and map on the back. ’52’ is the same  number of cards contained in a playing card deck, as well as a number of weeks in one year – so you can cover all places in one year if you go one place every week. Clever!

Launched in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Deck of Secrets now publishes over 25 titles in different categories like dining, brunch, bar, shopping, spa etc, covering not only Australia such as Sydney and Melbourne, but also popular cities worldwide including New York, Vancouver, Montreal, London, Edinburgh, Dublin Barcelona and Hong Kong.

I got to know this guide because the publisher contacted me to use one of my photo of Kipferl, an Austrian café in Angel. She kindly sent me this cute guide after going on sale. I am writing about this guide, not because my photo is used or I was asked to publicise it (which they never did), but the guide includes many places I mentioned in my blog, such as Albion, Caravan, Lantana, Leila’s Shop, Look Mum No Hands!, J+A Cafe, St Ali, Milk Bar, St John Hotel, Dishoom, and Hackney Pearl – this make me feel very close to the guide. Also its Martha Stewart-like package design and layout with pastel colours is nice, and the price of £4.99 (€7.95/$9.95 in AUS/US/Canada) is quite reasonable. You don’t need to bring an entire guide but only one card in your choice in your wallet – how handy, isn’t it? iPhone and Windows 7 Apps are also available.

Allpress Roastery Café @ Redchurch Street

高品質のコーヒーと居心地の良さ、センスの良いインテリアで、最近ロンドンでますます人気上昇中のダウンアンダー系（オーストリア・ニュージーランド）カフェに、新顔が登場した。ニュージーランドのコーヒー焙煎業者・Allpress Coffeeのカフェが、East London line（イースト・ロンドン・ライン）のShoreditch High Street（ショーディッチ・ハイストリート）駅の開通に伴い、最近急速にお洒落なエリアになりつつあるRedchurch Streetに、約1ヶ月前にオープンした（参考：Albion Café/Franzé & Evans/Pizza East）。

入口を入るってすぐ右手は、焙煎用機械とフェア・トレードのコーヒー豆の大きな袋が積まれた焙煎スペースで、左手は、金融紙のファイナンシャル・タイムズからリベラルなインディペンデント紙まで各種新聞などが読める、ナチュラルで落ち着けるカフェスペース。まだオープンしたてなのに週末は満席、平日でもトレンドに敏感でコーヒーにうるさい、ショーディッチ界隈の人たちで賑わっている。

オーストラリアとニュージーランドでは既に焙煎業者として高い評判を得ているAllpress Coffeeの、厳選したコーヒー豆（カフェでも販売している）と高い焙煎技術、徹底して温度管理された水、そしてLa Marzoccoエスプレッソマシンでいれたコーヒーの味は完璧。奥のキッチンで作られた、生ハムやローストした野菜、サーモンなど定番の素材に、スパイスや素材の組み合わせでちょっとひねりを利かせたサンドイッチ類も、通いたくなる味。店員も皆フレンドリーで、気持ちいい。

Downunder cafés which are increasingly popular with high quality coffee and laid-back and chic interior, has its new member in its London’s café circle – New Zealand’s renown roastery, Allpress Coffee opened its first café and roastery in London about a month ago, on rapidly changing Redchurch Street near newly opened East London line‘s Shoreditch High Street station (nearby places: Albion Café/Franzé & Evans/Pizza East).

Entering the café, you see a roaster area equipped with industrial-looking machines and big sac of fair trade coffee beans piled up. On the left is a simple and cozy café space where you can check all kinds of newspaper from the Financial Times to liberal Independent. The café is already popular among trendy Shoreditch coffee lovers in one month of its business, and is packed on weekend and quite busy even on weekday afternoon.

Already earned high reputation as a wholesale roaster in Australia and New Zealand, Allpress’s espresso, using fairly traded coffee beans (also for sale at the café) and brewed with a La Marzocco espresso machine and accurately temperature-controlled water, is excellent. Their sandwiches, prepared onsite, using fresh ingredients such as salmon, prosciutto and roasted vegetables with some creative twists in combination and use of spices and herbs, is another reason to come back to the café again, as well as the pleasant friendliness of the staff.

Graffitis in My Neighborhood

アーティストたちが多く住むイーストロンドンのハックニー区にある我が家の近くには、グラフィティアート（ストリートアート）がそこかしこで見られる。有名なところでは、ステンシルを使った作品で世界的に知られるストリートアーティスト、バンクシーの「Hoodie」（フード付きスウェットを着た男：イギリスでは不良の代名詞）（写真上）。Shepherdess Walk（シェファーデス・ウォーク）を北上、Regent’s Canal（リージェンツ・カナル）にかかる橋の下にある。またバンクシー作品では、Essex Road（エセックス・ロード）にある薬局の壁に描かれた、テスコのレジ袋を国旗のように掲げて皮肉った「Pledge Your Allegiance / Very Little Helps」（忠誠の誓い/あまりためにならない（テスコのスローガン「Every Little Helps」をもじった）もある。クラーケンウェル（Clerkenwell）にある、Mが愛車のベスパを買ったバイクショップの壁面に描かれていた、時価30万ポンドの「Old Skool」は、たった£1,000で匿名のドイツ人に売られたとニュースで知った。その話をした時に、ショップのオーナーは、「購入者も壁をはがすのに大金がかかったし、誰でも持ってってくれたら良かったんだよ」と笑っていた。欲のない人だ。そのドイツ人は業者を雇い、6週間もかけて壁をはがして、持ち帰ったそうだ。

There are Graffitis here and there in our neighborhood in Hackney, East London, where many artists live. One of the famous one is “Hoodie” (photo above) by famous British graffiti artist Banksy who uses stencils to create his works. You can find it under the bridge over the Regent’s Canal, on the North of the Shepherdess Walk. Another one of Banksy’s work nearby is “Pledge Your Allegiance / Very Little Helps” on the wall of a pharmacy on Essex Road, with two children pledging allegiance to supermarket giant Tesco (the title is a parody of Tesco’s slogan, “Every Little Helps”).  “Old Skool“, worth £300,000, drawn on the wall of a motorcycle shop in Clerkenwell, where M bought his Vespa, was sold it to an anonymous German buyer for only £1,000. When we talked about it with the owner of the shop, he smiled and said “I am glad someone took the painting anyway, and he paid a lots of money for its removal, so it’s fine.” He was not greedy at all! The German hired Wall Paintings Workshop and it took 6 weeks for them to remove the painting.

一番近いのは、Prestwood Street（プレストウッド・ストリート）にある、オーストラリア生まれ・ベルリン在住のChristopher Charlie Isoeの作品（写真上）。マフィアのような男性の顔の上に、ピエロのようなメイクを施している。

The closest graffiti is Australian-born and Berlin-based Christopher Charlie Isoe‘s work on the Prestwood Street – a painting of a Mafioso-look guy with make-up of a clown on the top of his face.

二番目に近いグラフィティ（写真上）。元々はRentokil（レントキル・英ビジネスサービス企業。日本ではカルミックと提携）の事務所だった建物の壁にかかれた、アメリカ人アーティスト、David Choeの作品（敷地内の他の作品：１／２）。つい最近、彼が作品を制作している最中に通りがかったのだけれど、その時はカメラを持っていなくて写真を撮れなかった。彼のブログによると、２日かけて完成させたそう。今日通りかかった時に、ちょうど門の鍵が開いていたので、写真撮影に成功。この前には、ネズミの顔をした、黒の制服を来た警察官（？）が描かれていた（作者不明）。私は前の方が好きだな。写真を撮っておくんだった。

The second closest from us is on the wall of former-Rentokil building, painted by American artist David Choe (photo above. Other works in the same place 1/2). I passed by when he was working on it but I didn’t have my camera that day, but I was lucky today that the gate was open (usually locked) and had my camera with me. He took 2 days to finish the work, according to his blog. Before Choe’s work, there was a painting of 2 rat-face men in black (police?) uniform – I couldn’t find who did it. I prefer the previous work – I should have taken a photo of it.

私は基本的にグラフィティはあんまり好きじゃない。タギングとか、落書きや文字が書いてあるものはどれも似たり寄ったりで個性がないし、なんだかラフすぎて、ティーンエイジャー向けという感じ。でもその中では、元祖ステンシルアーティストのBlek the ratやバンクシーの作品は好き。バンクシーは時に政治メッセージが強すぎると思うけれど。また、Pizza EastやAlbionの近く、Redchurch Street（レッドチャーチ・ストリート）とClub Row（クラブ・ロウ）の角にある、ベルギー人アーティスト・Roaのリスのグラフィティ（写真下）もいい。Roaは、動物の絵をよく描いているようだけれど、同じRedchurch Streetにある豚2匹の顔はちょっと怖い。。。

To be honest, I don’t like graffiti much in general. It tends to be too busy and too much colors, and more or less it looks all the same (especially the writing). It looks too rough and edgy, and is for teenagers to me. However, I kind of like Stencils, such as the works of French Blek the rat, the godfather of stencil graffiti art, and Banksy, though I don’t like his tendency to be too political.  I also like Belgian artist Roa‘s ‘Squirrel’ (photo below), at the corner of Redchurch street and Club Row, near Pizza East and Albion. Roa seems to like to paint animals, but some of them look a bit scary, like the two pigs on top of each other on the same Redchurch street.

グラフィティは、立派なアートだと言う人もいるけれど、無許可であればそれは当然、違法行為。カウンシル（区役所）は、市民からの通報を受け付けていて、通報があれば、48時間以内に調査の上、カウンシル所有の建物に描かれたグラフィティで、不適切なものは24時間以内に、その他のものは14日以内に消去される（ハックニー区の場合）。あのバンクシーの作品の中にも消されたものがいくつかある。カウンシルも必要経費購入者もちで希望者に売って、それを区の財源にすればいいのにね。

Some say graffiti is an art, but if it is done without permission, obviously it is illegal. Borough Councils accept a report of illegal graffiti from public. Once reported, all reports of graffiti will be investigated within 48 hours, and offensive graffiti on buildings owned and run by the Council will be removed within 24 hours of a report being received, and non-offensive graffiti will be removed within 14 days (Borough of Hackney‘s case). Even some of Banksy’s works were erased or painted over due to its illegality – maybe the Councils should sell the graffitis, with removal on buyer’s expense, and get extra money to use for the community’s sake.

Albion cafe @ The Boundary Hotel

Shoreditch（ショーディッチ）地区に、あのテレンス・コンラン卿がてがけたブティック・ホテル、The Boundaryがオープンした。ビクトリア朝時代の倉庫を改造したホテルには、バウハウス、イームズ、コルビジェ等1室ごとにインテリアが違う17の客室の他、伝統的なイギリス料理とフレンチを提供するレストランレストラン、カフェ・デリが入っている。客室と屋上のバー／レストランは4月にオープン予定。
写真は、1階にあるカフェ、Albion。白を基調とした、カントリースタイルをモダンにアレンジした店内では、伝統的なイギリスの軽食やデザート類が楽しめる。朝8時から12時まで、毎日やっているのも嬉しい。ホクストンやBrick Lane（ブリックレーン）、Spitalfields （スピタルフィールド）Marketからも歩ける距離なので、近くに来た際は覗いてみて下さい。

Sir Terence Conran’s new boutique hotel, The Boundary, just opened in Shoreditch, in January 2009. The Boundery, is in a converted Victorian warehouse, and contains a restaurants, serves classic English/French, and an all-day cafe with mini food store. The hotel’s bedrooms, decorated with different design theme inspired by legendary designers or design movements, and a rooftop bar and grill will open in April.

The pictures are of the Albion, a cafe on the 1st floor. The decor of the cafe is a country style based on white, arranged with modern twist. You can enjoy Brits’ favorite food all day from 8am to midnight, 7 days a week! Hoxton, Brick Lane, and Spitalfields Market is within a walking distance.
