Design Hotels Collector’s Edition Annual Book Launch Party @ South Place Hotel

デザイナーズホテルの予約サイト・Design Hotelsが、会社設立20年を記念し、限定版イヤーブックを発行した。私たちはDesign Hotelsにメンバー登録していたため招待状が送られて来たので、Design Hotelsに最近加盟した、リバプールストリート駅近くのSouth Place Hotelで、15日に開催された発行記念パーティに、この特別版イヤーブックを見に行って来た。

現在ベルリンに本部を置くDesign Hotelsは1993年、カリフォルニアに設立。世界40カ国以上の250以上の独立系デザイナーズホテルが参加する、デザイン・インテリア好き御用達のサイトだ。参加ホテルを美しい写真入りで網羅した、800ページのこの限定版「XXL Collecter’s Edition」は、何と25kgもある馬鹿でかい本（写真上）。お値段はなんと€2,500もするのだが、フィンランドのデザイン会社・Artekが特別に製作したAlvar Aalto（アルヴァ・アールト）のStool 60とテーブルがついてくる（写真参照：Wallpaper）。そんなに大枚をはたけないという人のためにも、実用的で小型サイズのAnniversary Edition（ €59.90）も販売している。パーティのゲストには、本の概要とメンバーホテルをコンパクトに網羅した「Directions」（写真下）が無料で配られた。このDirectionsも中々の出来。ウェブサイトでもホテルの写真や概要は見られるし、私的にはこれ１冊で充分かも？

Design Hotels has released a special anniversary edition of its annual book to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The subscribers to Design Hotels were invited to the launch party on May 15th at one of their newly added member hotel, South Place Hotel near Liverpool Street Station, so we grabbed the opportunity to see their new book.

Founded in California in 1993, now Berlin-based Design Hotels has a network of over 250 independent boutique hotels in over 40 countries worldwide. The 800-page limited XXL Collecter’s Edition, showcasing their member hotels, is humongous and weighs 25kg. It cost €2,500 but also comes with Alvar Aalto’s Stool 60 and table, which have been specially customised by Finnish design company Artek (more photos: Wallpaper). They also have smaller and more practical Anniversary Edition for €59.90. For the party guests, they even had smaller free exclusive copy ‘Directions’, including snapshots of the annual book and the directory of the member hotels. Very nice itself!

“Design” Auction @ Phillips de Pury & Company

9月28日に、現代アートやフォトグラフィー、20〜21世紀のデザイン、アート、ジュエリー類を手がけるオークションハウス、Phillips de Pury & Companyで行われた「Design」オークションに行ってきた。オークションは初参加。ドレスアップした紳士・淑女ばかりで、浮いてしまうんじゃないかとドキドキして行ったけれど、フィリップ・スタルクのルイ・ゴーストの椅子が並べられた、スタイリッシュなオークション・スペースには、意外と若い人も多く、ちょっと安心。

オークションが始まる前に、競売にかけられる品物が展示されている、ギャラリースペースを見て回る（写真下2点）。このオークションは、ル・コルビュジェやジャン・プルーヴェ、アルヴァ・アールト、エットレ・ソットサス等モダン・デザインの巨匠から、マーク・ニューソンやロン・アラッドなど現代で活躍するデザイナーまで、家具やインテリア作品100点以上が競売にかけられた。倉俣史朗の硝子の椅子（£39,650で落札）や柳宗理のバタフライ・スツール2点（£5,000で落札）といった日本人の作品数点も。また、ヴィクトリア&アルバート博物館で開催された「1:1 – Architects Build Small Spaces」展の展示品3点（藤森照信作「Beetle’s House」£9,375、RURAL STUDIO「Woodshed」、HELEN & HARD ARCHITECTS「Ratatosk」）も出品された。

フランス語訛りの競売人が、後ろのスクリーンに映し出された商品を紹介すると、買い手が値段を提示、イギリス・ポンドをはじめ、アメリカ・ドル、ユーロ、スイス・フラン、円、ロシア・ルーブル、中国元で表示された、刻々と変わる現在価格がスクリーン上に表示される。買い手は主に、横の電話付きカウンターに陣取った業界の人たちだけれど、会場（事前登録が必要）やインターネット、電話からも入札が入る。最安落札価格は陶器の器£1,000、最高価格がFRANCOIS-XAVIER LALANNE作の蛇の形をしたカーペット「Unique ‘Le Serpent’ carpet」で£94,850。ちょっと頑張れば手に入れられるような値段のものもあったけれど、１時間半以上続いたオークションの間ずっと数字を見ていると、値段の感覚がなくなって、何でも買えるような気分になってくるから、私みたいなずぶ素人は、こんなオークションには気軽に手を出さない方がいいんだろうな。

I went to see the “Design” auction on Sept 28 at Phillips de Pury & Company, an auction house specializing in contemporary art, photography, 20-21st century design, art and jewelry. It was my first auction house experience, and I was nervous before I stepped in the auction room, thinking that this kind of auction was filled with well-dressed ladies and gentlemen and I might not fit in. But surprisingly there were many young people sitting on Phillip Stark‘s Louis Ghost Chairs in the auction space and this made me feel more relaxed.

Before the auction started, I walked around the gallery space exhibiting lots that were going to be sold in the auction (two photos below). The list of the lots included the works from modernist design maestros such as Le Corbusier, Jean Prouvé, Alvar Aalto, Ettore Sottsass and Gio Ponti to present-day designers such as Marc Newson and Ron Arad, as well as several Japanese designers works (ex. Glass Chair by Shiro Kuramata, sold at £39,650, and Two ‘Butterfly’ stools by Sori Yanagi, sold at £5,000). There were also three museum works from “1:1 – Architects Build Small Spaces” at Victoria and Albert Museum; “Beetle’s House” by Terunobu Fujimori, sold at £9,375, “Woodshed” by Rural Studio, and “Ratatosk” by Helen & Hard Architects.

When an auctioneer with French accent introduced a lot projected on a screen, prices in GBP, USD, Euro, CHF, JPY, RUB, and CNY appeared as buyers bids came in and the numbers changed constantly until the price was finalized. Bidders were mainly the professionals occupied a side counter equipped with phone lines, but also people sitting in the auction room who registered in advance and others on the internet and over the phone. The cheapest sale price at the auction was ceramic bowl by John Ward at £1,000, and most expensive piece was snake-shaped “Unique ‘Le Serpent’ carpet” by Francois-Xavier Lalanne at £94,850. There were some pieces that I could afford if I saved up for it, but I lost the sense of money after watching those ever-changing numbers for over 1 hour and half, and it would be dangerous for an amateur like me to involve in the ‘magic’ world of auction.

Nordic Bakery: Scandinavian Style Café @ Golden Square

Golden Squareに面したスカンジアビア風カフェ・Nordic Bakeryは、ピカデリー・サーカスやショッピング街のリージェント・ストリートの喧噪から逃れて、ゆっくり一息着きたい時にぴったりのカフェ。北欧の素材と本場のレシピを元に、カフェの地下のキッチンで作られるフレッシュなメニューは、ライ麦パンのサンドイッチやシナモン・ロール等、シンプルだけれど家庭的で、ほっとする味。特にフィンランドのレシピで作られたシナモン・ロールは大人気で（各国で少しずつレシピが違うらしい）、焼き上がりが運ばれてきた途端、次々と売れていく。このシナモン・ロールはやはり焼きたてが一番。以前はサイズが巨大でかなりお腹が空いていないと食べきれない程だったが、今は少し小さくなったような気がする。コーヒーも美味しいが、私はChrysanthemum Tea（菊花茶）が好き。これも北欧のものなのか分からないけれど（中国茶？）、さっぱりしていて、味の濃いシナモン・ロールに良く合う。インテリアにもこだわりがあり、家具からイッタラの食器類まで、アルヴァ・アールトやイルマリ・タピオヴァラ、カイ・フランク等、北欧デザイナーの作品でセンス良くまとめられている。ウェブサイトもとても素敵なので、ぜひチェックしてみて下さい。

Nordic Bakery is a Scandinavian-style café facing the Golden Square. It is a perfect place to relax, away from busy Piccadilly Circus and shopping paradise Regent Street. Their simple and homey menu, such as rye bread sandwiches and cinnamon buns, is based on traditional Nordic recipes and ingredients and freshly made in the premise. Especially their cinnamon buns (Finnish version – each scandinavian countries has different recipe) is very popular. As soon as the freshly baked buns are brought from the kitchen, people jump on them (best to eat hot). It used to be huge and was hard to finish all unless you don’t eat all day, but now it seems a bit smaller. Coffee is delicious as well, but my favorite is Chrysanthemum Tea – I am not sure if it is Nordic stuff (there is one in China), but its light and refreshing taste goes well with cinnamon buns with strong flavor. Their space is filled with tasteful furniture and tableware designed by iconic Nordic designers, such as Kaj Franck, Alvar Aalto and Ilmari Tapiovaara.
