The Garrison Pub @ Bermondsey Street

Bermondsey Streetを散策した後は、Garrisonで一休み。この店はパブなのだが、中はどう見てもレストラン。ディナータイムが始まる前の夕方、全てのテーブルにはナイフ＆フォークとワイングラスがセットしてあり、食事をしない客はカウンターや窓際の座り心地の悪いスツールに座るしかない。

パブと言うとアルコールのイメージがあるが、実はコーヒーやお茶だけでもオッケー。でも美味しいエスプレッソが出たためしがないので、パブではコーヒーは飲まないようにしているのだが、Garrisonのインテリアがあまりに可愛かったので、立ち寄ることに。ヴィンテージの家具、アンティークのお皿やカップ、フレンチカントリー風水差し、そして鹿の頭の剥製など、じっくり店内を観察するのも面白い。でもコーヒーに関しては予感的中。Mの「ロンドンでローストした、オーガニック＆フェアトレード」のエスプレッソは、本人曰く、かなり残念な味。それを見越して、私はフレッシュミントティーにしたからよかったけど。サービスの方も、低額のノンアルコールの飲み物しかオーダーしない私たちのような客には店員も無関心。食事はしていないので料理の味は分からないが、2012年2月付Time Out誌のレビューは芳しくない。それでも帰る頃には、席が埋まりつつあったので、この「ファンキーでクール」なGarrisonは、殿様商売でも安泰なんだろう。

After a stroll on Bermondsey Street, we had a little rest at the Garrison. They call themselves a ‘pub’ but it looks more like a restaurant; in the late afternoon, cutlery and wine glasses were set on each table, except rather uncomfortable counter and window side stools.

We don’t normally have coffee at pubs, because they obviously focus on alcohols and espresso is not good in general. But we went to the Garrison because of its funky interior: vintage furniture, antique ceramics, French country style water jugs, and mishmash of bric-a-brac. Our anticipation was right: M’s espresso, “organic & fair trade, roasted in London”, was imperfect to say the least. Thank god I ordered fresh mint tea – teas cannot go wrong. And the staff was rather uninterested in a customer like us, just having a non-alcoholic beverage. I am not sure about their food, but Time Out (Feb 2012) review was not good. After all, they are cool and nothing matters.

Bermondsey Street @ Southwark

ロンドンブリッジ駅程近くのBermondsey street（バーモンジー・ストリート）は、最近人気のエリアの一つ。昔の倉庫や工場など産業地帯の面影を残すこの通りには、Pizarroとその姉妹店のJose、Zuccaなど、近年トレンディなレストランがオープンしている。

テムズ川に近いこのエリアは元々湿地帯で、Bermondsey Streetはその中を通る土手道として作られた。中世には、ロンドンの市場に近く交通の便も良いこの地域は、真水の潮流が皮をなめすのに適しているということで、皮革とその関連産業が盛んになった。しかし19世紀頭にはその繁栄にも陰りが。1836年にLondon & Greenwich railwayがBermondsey Streetの北側を貫き、Bermondseyに産業が興ると共に、貧困と人口過密をももたらした。下水の悪臭や劣悪な住環境、騒音公害はひどく、産業が地域から去った後1900年以降は地域人口が低下。その後行政による住環境の改善が始まった。

多くの産業施設は取り壊されたが、近年残った建物は改装され、ロフト風「live/work（職住兼用）」住宅に生まれ変わり、ロンドンの再開発エリアとして人気上昇（Guardian紙）。1950年代にCaledonian RoadからBermondsey Squareに移転して来たBermondsey Antiques market（毎金曜日開催）に通じる道でもあるBermondsey Streetは、アンティーク業者が通り沿いの元倉庫を使用している。

Bermondsey street in Southwark is one of the emerging trendy zone in London  with old industrial feel. Hip restaurants and shops such as Zucca, Pizarro and sister venue of Jose have opened in recent years on this street.

Situated close to the river Thames, the Bermondsey Street area was originally marshland, and Bermondsey Street was built up as a causeway crossing the marshy land. The leather industry and allied activities began to flourish in medieval times, as the area’s freshwater tidal streams was ideal for the tanners. It was also close to the London markets and had good transport links. But the decline began in the 19th century. In 1836, the London & Greenwich railway was built across the northern end of Bermondsey Street. The railway opened up Bermondsey to industry but also brought poverty and overcrowding to the area. Open sewers and poor quality housing were common, and the noise and smells were awful. Later Industries moved out, and by 1900 the population was declining. The local council began to act on improving the area’s living conditions.

Nowadays Survived industrial buildings have been converted to ‘live/work’ lofts, and is becoming one of the most chic areas to live for Londoners (the Guardian). Also many of the former warehouses are used by antique dealers, as the street leads to Bermondsey Antiques market which was moved to Bermondsey Square from Caledonian Road in the 1950s and is held every Friday.

Hurwundeki Café @ Cambridge Heath Road

Hurwundeki（発音不明。ハーウンデキ？？）は、鉄道のCambridge Heath（ケンブリッジ・ヒース）駅の高架下、イーストロンドンで最近お洒落になってきたエリアにある、カフェ＆レストラン兼アンティークショップ。オーナーがヘアスタイリストなので、中にヘアサロンもある。前庭には乗馬型玩具やカボチャの馬車など古いおもちゃが無造作に置いてあり、外から見ると寂れた子供の遊び場という感じ。「Hurwundeki」という聞き慣れない名前も、最初はアフリカかどっかの言葉かな？と思っていたけれど、実はオーナーの出身地・韓国の済州島の方言で「髪」を意味するそう。中も外も、韓国を思わせるものは一切ないけれど、ビビンバやプルコギなど韓国料理が、クロワッサンなどの朝食、サンドイッチ、サラダ、ケーキ類、コーヒー通の好むSquare Mileのコーヒーなど、フツーの西洋風食べ物・飲み物と共にメニューに並ぶ。かなり使い古されたヴィンテージの家具やシャンデリアなどで飾られた中は広々、まったりした空気が流れていて居心地はなかなか。電車が頭上を通る時は振動・騒音もあるが、それほど気にならない。

ランチは少し半信半疑で、ロンドン東部ではあまりお目にかかれないビビンバとプルコギを注文。ちゃんとした韓国レストランじゃないし、あまり期待はしていなかったけど、思った以上に美味しい。我が儘言うなら、イートインには、蓋が顔に当たって食べにくいペラペラの紙製容器ではなく、普通のお皿で出して欲しい。ホットドリンクは陶器のカップで出て来るのに、どうして食べ物は安っぽい紙製なのか？？

Hurwundeki is housed in the railway arches under Cambridge Heath station in the heart of East London. From outside, it looks more like run-down children’s playground with an old toys such as ride-on horse and a pumpkin carriage on the front garden, but this is a popular café, restaurant, vintage shop + hair salon (the owner is a hair stylist). At first, I thought its unfamiliar name of ‘Hurwundeki’ is African language or something, but it is not – in fact, the word is Korean and means ‘hair’ in a dialect of Jeju Island where the owner is from. The space has nothing Korean in sight, but does have Korean dishes such as Bibimbap and Bulgogi, together with usual western breakfast, sandwiches, salad and cakes, as well as famous Square Mile coffee. The eat-in space is a bit shabby but spacious and laid back, surrounded by worn-out vintage furniture and chandeliers as well as quirky bric-a-brac. You may feel a bit of vibration and noise when a train passes by, but it’s not too annoying.

We tried their bibimbap and bulgogi for lunch, which is rare in East London, and the food was surprisingly decent as a café, not a proper Korean restaurant with table service. It would be even better if they can serve the food on a plate, not in a thin paper container with plastic lid (photo below) – it was quite hard to eat as the lid slapped my face with every bite. Eat-in drinks are served in a ceramic cup, but why not food??

Camden Passage Antique Market @ Angel, Islington

イズリントン・エンジェルにある有名なアンティーク・マーケット、Camden Passage（カムデン・パッセージ）。1960年代にアンティーク・マーケットが開かれるようになった。昔ながらの店構えを残すカムデン・パッセージは、外国人がイメージするイギリスを体現している。昨日のショーディッチのマーケットと比べるとずいぶん落ち着きがあって、のんびり散策するのにぴったり。トラムの車庫であった建物にテナントとして入っていたり、脇に入った小道に小さい店を構えていたり、屋台を出していたりと、店の形態も様々だ。

マーケットの開かれる毎週水・土曜日以外も開いている店もあり、またElk in the WoodsやBreakfast Clubといったカフェやパブ、毛糸のお店Loopや可愛い雑貨屋のSMUG、オーガニックのフローズン・ヨーグルトを売るFrae、高級チョコレートを扱うPaul A Young、またイギリス人女優のSadie Frost（サディ・フロスト。ジュード・ロウの元妻）とJemima Frenchが経営するFrostFrenchと言うブティックもあって、マーケットがない日でも人通りが絶えない。

Camden Passage is known for its antiques shops, and hosts antique market founded in the 1960s on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings. The street still keeps old storefronts and signage and the good old Britishness that foreign visitors imagine of. It is much more tranquil and better looking in compare to the anarchic Shoreditch market, and perfect place for strolling around. There are different styles of shops: tenants in a former tram shed, small shops in an arcade or on a side alley, and market stools on the street.

The street is never be deserted as many shops open other than market days and there are also non-antique shops to attract visitors, such as cafés and pubs like The Elk in the Woods and The Breakfast Club, Loop yarn shop, SMUG lifestyle store, organic frozen yoghurt shop Frae, Paul A Young chocolaterie, and FrostFrench boutique owned by British actress Sadie Frost (Jude Law’s ex) and Jemima French.

Tina, We Salute You @ Dalston

このブログを通じて知り合ったブロガーから教えてもらって、前から気になっていたカフェ、Tina, We Salute Youに行ってきた。前にも一度行ったのだけれど、あいにくサンドイッチが売り切れていたので退散。今回は食べ物はまだあったけれど、小さなお店はほぼ満席、相席をお願いして何とか腰を落ち着けた。何か印象が違うなと思ったら、壁が塗り替えられていた（写真下）。今の方がシンプルで断然いい。

ミッド・センチュリーの中古家具やアンティーク風の食器類は、なかなかセンス良し。新鮮な材料を使った手作りサンドイッチも、甘すぎずふんわり仕上がったチョコレートケーキも、共に合格点。今まで書いてきたコーヒーが美味しいカフェで、Union Hand Roastedと共に高いシェアを誇るSquare Mileのコーヒー豆を使い、これまたこれらのカフェで高い使用率を誇る、エスプレッソ・マシンのフェラーリ・La Marzoccoでいれたコーヒーも美味しい。

周りには何もない住宅地なのに、行った2回とも満員御礼。その後も客が入れ替わり立ち替わりやってきた。ブリック・レーンで日曜に開かれるSunday UpMarketで、カップケーキを売る屋台から始まったというTina, We Salute You、今ではすっかり地元の人気店に成長した。美味しい食べ物とコーヒーがあれば、お店がどこにあっても人はやってくるんだという一例だ。少し分かりにくい場所にあるので、行く時は地図検索してからどうぞ。

We finally made to sit down at Tina, We Salute You, a café one of the blogger recommended me for great espresso. We tried there once, but we left without ordering anything, as lunch time was over and no food was left. This time we almost missed to experience the café again as it was nearly full, but we asked other customers to share the table and we made it! I thought something was different, and I realized the wall was repainted (photos below), since the first visit. It’s simple and impressive, and much better than before!

The café’s antique tableware and mid-century style second-hand furniture are very nice. Handmade sandwiches with fresh ingredients passed the test, and their great chocolate cake was smooth and moderately sweet so that I don’t have to feel too much guilt to finish the treat. Another great thing was their espresso – brewed with Ferrari of espresso machine La Marzocco, using coffee beans from an established coffee roaster Square Mile, which has a big share together with Union Hand Roasted at the cafés that I wrote in the past where you can have a great cup of coffee.

Tina, We Salute You is in the middle of boring residential area, but it was full on both days we went. Even after we sat down, new customers came in constantly. Starting from a cupcake stall in Sunday UpMarket near Brick Lane, the café is grown up to become a favored place in the neighborhood. This proves a golden rule of successful café – people will come as long as it offers great food and coffee, no matter where it is. Tina, We Salute You is a bit hard to find, so don’t forget to search a map before you go.
