Tate Britain’s new exhibition ‘Apocalypse‘ (September 21 – January 15, 2011).  is the major exhibition dedicated to 19th century English Romantic painter John Martin‘s work, His paintings of apocalyptic destruction and biblical disaster with rugged landscapes and grandiose theatrical spectacle are exhibited in 6 rooms, including “The Great Day of His Wrath“, “The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the “The Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum” which is restored after being badly damaged by 1928 Thames flood (photos on MailOnline).

His meticulously detailed paintings are dramatic, spectacular and shocking. His apocalyptic vision has inspired many film, science fiction, video games, manga comics, musicians and artists, reflecting our anxiety about natural disaster, war and terrorist threat. After observing recent destructive Japan earthquake and Tsunami, his works make me be in awe and fear of the great nature’s uncontrollable power together with its beauty, and even make me believe the existence God who control the nature, though I am not religious at all. Hopefully these apocalyptic incidents in the paintings won’t really happen…
