2013 Serpentine Gallery Pavillion by Sou Fujimoto

2013年度のサーペンタイン・ギャラリー夏季限定パビリオン（10月20日まで）をデザインしたのは、トータルで13人目、日本人3人目となる、建築家の藤本壮介氏。過去世界に名だたる建築家が手がけてきたこの栄誉ある建築プロジェクトに、41歳の最年少で抜擢された（過去ブログ参照：2009年 & 2010年）。

ジャングルジムを連想させる、直径20mmの鉄製の白い棒を格子状に組み合わせた軽量の建物は、期間中多目的スペースとして使用されている。訪れた人たちは、色々な高さに取付けられた透明なアクリル板の上に座って、読書したりお喋りしたり考えにふけったり、中にあるフォートナム＆メイソンのカフェでお茶したり、思い思いに時を過ごしている。建築家のせいではないのだけれど、日が経ちアクリル板が少し汚れていて、近くで見るより外から、しかも全体が見渡せる少し離れた場所から見る方がベター。違う角度から見ると、違った印象になるので、訪れた際は是非、ぐるりと一回りしてみて。

The annual Serpentine Gallery Pavillion 2013 (until October 20) is designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. He is the 13th in total and the 3rd Japanese architect to design this prestigious temporary architecture, and is the youngest of all at the age of 41 (reference: 2009 & 2010 articles).

This lightweight and semi-transparent latticed structure of 20mm steel poles is utilized as a multi-purpose social space. Visitors can sit down on acrylic discs of any level and enjoy reading, chatting or meditating. Or you can relax with a cup of tea or coffee at Fortnum & Mason café inside the pavillion. It’s not architect’s fault, but acrylic discs got dirty a little bit over time, and to me it looks better from outside, further enough to see the whole view. Also looking at the pavillion from different angles give you a different impression – not only see inside or from one point, but also go around (and around) when you visit.

“Who Am I ?” @ Great Sutton Street, Clerkenwell

Goswell Road（ゴスウェル・ロード）を歩いている時、Great Sutton Streetに面した建物の壁に浮き出たこの「白い顔」を発見した。

これは何？？と思って近づいてみると、下の方にポスターが貼ってある（写真下）。家に帰って、ポスターに書かれていたウェブサイトを見て、その謎が解けた。この顔のモデルは、地元クラーケンウェルの著名建築家＆ジャーナリストであるPeter Murray。サンフランシスコ出身でロンドンをベースとするアーティスト・Greg Shapterが、Domus Tilesという会社の依頼で制作した。→作品詳細とPeter Murrayのプロフィール

横から見ると何が何だか分からないけれど、少し離れた歩道に描かれた「X」の位置に立つと顔がはっきり浮かび上がる。→ 横から見た写真：Greg Shapterのウェブサイト

ちなみに顔の両面にある計5体の人形（右2体・左3体）も気になる。あれも同じアーティストの作品かしら？？

We spotted the white silhouette of a face on the side of the building on Great Sutton Street, while we are walking down Goswell Road. Who is this man??

We found a poster beneath the face when we came closer (photo below), and checked out the indicated website on the poster when we came back home to “get the answer.” This mysterious man is prominent local architect & journalist, Peter Murray, created by San Francisco born London based artist, Greg Shapter and comissioned by Domus Tiles. →details of project and who Peter Murray is

The face is fully distinguishable from a spot on the pavement marked with an ‘X’, and from the side you can’t understand what it is as the face disappear. → photos from the side：Greg Shapter’s website

I am also curious 5 human figures on both sides of the face, two on the right and three on the left. Are those also made by the same artist??

IFO (Identified Flying Object) by Jacques Rival @ King’s Cross

オリンピックを前に急ピッチで改装が進むキングス・クロス駅の北に置かれた、ブランコが中に入った9mもの巨大な鳥かご「IDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT (IFO)」（UFOをもじったネーミングか）は、フランス人アーティスト／建築家であるJacques Rival（ジャック・リヴァル）の作品で、キングス・クロスのアート・プログラム「RELAY」の一環。King’s Cross ウェブサイトによると、IFOは急速に変わりゆくキングス・クロスを体現。夜はライトアップされ、クレーンで吊るされる夜もあるそう。また、設置期間の2年間（2011年11月17日〜2013年11月17日）、様々なイベントに使われるという。

“IDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT (IFO)“, a 9-meter giant birdcage with a two-seater swing chair inside set on the north of King’s Cross train station, is a commission by French architect/architect Jacques Rival and is part of RELAY, the first dedicated art programme at King’s Cross. According to the King’s Cross website, IFO reflects the transience of King’s Cross and the rapid changes it is undergoing. IFO gets illuminated at night and is hang from the cranes on selected nights. It also hosts with a series of pop-up activities throughout two years period from Nov 17, 2011 to Nov 17, 2013.

Central Saint Giles Designed by Renzo Piano

イタリア人建築家・Renzo Piano（レンゾ・ピアノ）がデザインし、2010年5月に完成したCentral Saint Giles。レンゾ・ピアノのイギリス初の作品となったこのビル群は、オフィス、住居、ショップ＆レストランの商業スペースを兼ね揃えた複合施設で、外側は13万4千もの光沢のあるテラコッタ・タイルで覆われている。日本の三菱地所も出資しているというこのビル、Tottenham Court Road（トッテナム・コート・ロード）駅東側という好立地ということもあり、住居部分は、ロンドンでの拠点にするため、またロンドンで勉強する子女の住居として、主に香港、シンガポール、マレーシア人に買われたらしい。建物には、屋上緑化をはじめ、環境に優しい様々な仕掛けが施されており、バイオマス・ボイラーは80％の暖房と温水をまかない、冷却タワーから排出される水は灌漑用、そして水洗トイレに再利用されるそうだ。

商業エリアは、最初はテナントも少なく閑散としていたが、またかのジェイミー・オリバーのブリティッシュ・Union Jackをはじめ、ハンバーガー店・Byron、ブラジルのストリートフード・Cabana、イタリアンのZizzi（味はファミレス並みでお勧めしないけど）、スイーツの美味しいカフェ・Peyton & Byrne、そしてヘルシー・ファーストフードを謳うPod（近日オープン）と、チェーン系レストランが徐々にオープン、なかなかの賑わいになった。チェーンばかりであまり特別感はないけれど、ロンドンのど真ん中という立地に加え、レストランは広くて席数が多いので、食事難民になりかけた時に便利かも。

Central Saint Giles is a mixed-use development (residence, office and commercial spaces) on the east of Tottenham Court Road station. Designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano as his first work in UK, the façades of this building complex is covered by 134,000 green, orange, lime and yellow glazed terracotta tiles. Due to its excellent location, many housing units are reported to have been sold to buyers from Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia seeking accommodation for visits to London and for their children who study here. The development has been designed with a number of features intended to reduce its environmental impact: biomass boilers which provide 80% of the heating and hot water; re-use of the water discharged from the cooling tower for irrigation systems and the flushing toilets; planted roof terraces to absorb rainfall.

The commercial spaces were hardly occupied at the beginning, but little by little the spaces have been filled up by restaurants and cafés – Jamie Oliver (again!) ‘s British Union Jack, our favorite hamburger Byron, Brasilian street food Cabana, Zizzi Italian, café with yummy sweets Peyton & Byrne, and ‘healthy’ fast food Pod (opening soon). Mostly chains and nothing special, but the complex is located in the heart of London and the restaurants are large and have lots of seating, so it may be useful when you can’t find any place to eat – or if you are a big fan of Jamie and wants to contribute to his business!

Open House London Weekend

Open House Londonは、一般の人々の建築に対する理解を深めることを目的とした団体。1992年以来毎年、通常9月の第三週末に、個人宅や建築家のスタジオから政府施設、歴史的建造物まで、ロンドンにある700以上の様々な建築物を無料で見学できる2日間のイベント・Open House Londonを開催しており、今年は、先週末の9月17＆18日に行われた。これは、ヨーロッパ各地で開催されるイベント・European Heritage Days（Journées Européennes du Patrimoine：ヨーロッパ文化遺産の日）の一環で、期間中は、建物内の見学だけでなく、特別イベント、建築家のトークやガイド付きツアーなどを行うところもある。

興味深いイベントだ。けれどロンドンに来て最初の年に、近所にあるいくつかの建物を見た以来、毎年気になりつつも、行かずじまいになっている。何回か、どこかに置いてあったイベントプログラム（写真上）を無料で貰ってきたけれど、裏には£6.50と値段が印刷してあるので、売り物なのかもしれない。ウェブサイトではデジタル版が£3.50とある。でもこの冊子、いらいらするぐらい情報が分かりづらいのだ。リストはborough（区）やエリア毎に掲載されているのだが、住所と最寄りの駅名だけで地図がなく、見学ルートを考えるにはいちいちグーグルマップをチェックしなければならない。それに、建物毎に何行かの説明書きがあるだけで、写真があまり載っていないので、どんな建物か想像がつかず、これまたウェブで写真と詳細を探すはめになる。ロンドンの建築の知識が豊富だったり、建築に情熱を傾けている人はいいかもしれないが、私にはこれが面倒くさい。時間をかけてリサーチしても、人気のある場所は朝一番に行かないと、何時間も行列に並ぶはめになる。また先着順予約のみの入場のところもあり、予約があっという間に埋まってしまうところも多いらしい。

友人の話によると、この週末の朝の電車は、プログラムを熱心に読み込んでいる人たちで埋まっているという。熱心な人もいるものだ。私も建築には興味があるけれど、残念ながらそこまでする気力がないのだ。

This year’s Open House London event took place on last weekend, September 17 & 18. Open House London is an organisation which promotes appreciation of architecture by the general public. Since 1992, every year, usually held on the third weekend in September, the organisation hosts a two-day event known for Open House Weekend in which over 700 buildings with architectural significance in London, from small private houses and modern architects’ studios to government’s buildings and historic palaces, opens their doors to public, including special events, neighbourhood walks, architects’ talks and guided tours and more for free of charge. This event is a London version of the Europe-wide event of European Heritage Days (Journées Européennes du Patrimoine).

The concept is great, but we are kind of lost and always give up visiting anywhere, after we saw few places in our neighborhood on the first year of living in London… Some years I grabbed the program (photo above) from a brochure rack  somewhere for free, but it seems to be for sale with £6.50 price tag printed on the back, or digital edition for £3.50 online. However, the information is frustratingly hard to understand. Listings are ordered by borough or area, but there is no map but just address and nearest stations – so I have to check on google map for hours to plan a route. Also there are a small paragraph of information about each place but very few photos, so I have to go online for the images and further details. That’s a lot of work, unless you have a wealth of knowledge in architecture or are very passionate for architecture. Even If you did a thorough research, you have to go early in the morning or to be on a long queue for hours, if you want to visit the famous buildings. Some cases admission is by advance booking only and the popular sites are booked very fast like a lightening.

According to my friend, the morning train of the weekend is packed of people, enthusiastically reading the program. I like the architecture but I don’t have enough passion to go through these trouble…

たまたま通りがかった建物。中を見ようと思ったけれど、既に建築家のトークが始まっており、小さな会場は満員で断念。周りに何にもない、こんな何の変哲もない（ように見える）建物でも、大勢の人が来るのだ。

The building we just happened to pass by. We thought to visit inside but we gave up as the architect’s talk already started and the small room was full with people seriously listening. Surprisingly even this small building, looking nothing special, in the middle of nowhere attracted many people.
