100% Design: London Design Festival 2010

先週金曜日、アールズ・コート展示センターまで足を伸ばし、London Design Festivalの一環である、100% Designを見に行ってきた。→100％ Designについては、昨年のエントリー参照。

取引相手を探しに行くわけでもなし。大体毎年似たりよったりで、もう何回も行っているし、わざわざアールズ・コートまで足を伸ばすのも面倒だなあと思いつつ、やはりデザイン系のイベントなので、見ておかなくてはと思って行ってしまう。今年は、「デザイン・ホテル」ブームと共に一時期流行ったプラスチックや人工素材を使ったデザインは減り、木や布、リサイクル素材を利用し、温かみのある自然な色合いを使った、優しい感じのデザインが多かったように思う。

展示しているのは世界から集まった（主にヨーロッパ系）デザインやインテリア、また素材系の会社だけれども、国や市のブースも多く、その国や地域全体のデザイン・ビジネスをサポートしている。今回はそれらの国のブースの写真をアップしてみた。

I went to see “100% Design“, a part of the London Design Festival, at Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre on last Friday. → see last year’s entry for more details about 100％ Design.

I am not looking for a business opportunity at the trade show, and it is a pain to get to Earl’s Court on the other side of London from me, but I always decided to go at the end because I am interested in design, though the show looks  more or less the same every year. This year’s design trend seems to be “natural, warm and cozy”, using wood and earth colored textiles as well as recycle materials, rather than plasticky and artificial ‘cold’ design, used to be fashionable together with the wave of cool ‘design’ hotels.

Exhibitors are mainly private design and interior firms as well as material companies, mainly Europeans but from all over the world, but there are also some booths set up by countries and local government to boost and support their design industry. Today I put up some photos of these public booths.

アジア（韓国、台湾）のブース。韓国は、国のブースだけでなく、個別にも多くブースを構えていた。イギリスでは、最近韓国勢が頑張っている。サムソンやLGなど、テレビや家電、携帯端末でシェアを伸ばしてきていて、日本勢は元気がない。「クールジャパン」を世界へ、とか言ってる割には、100％ Designなど国際見本市や重要な場面では一向に見かけない。海外にいると、日本の製品は繊細できめ細やかで、気が利いていて、見た目も美しいと思う。どうしてもっと、デザインにうるさい西欧諸国に、日本が誇るデザインを売り込まないのかと、いつも不思議に思っていた。マンガとかアニメとか、こちらでは至極マイナーな分野ばっかりやっていないで、100％ Designでも大きなブースをどーんと構えて、日本のデザインを世界に売り込もうという気概が欲しいものだ。でも、日本人って、内向きと言うか国内での小さな成功で満足しているし、外国に出て行くのも怖がっているように見える。語学も外国人とのコミュニケーションも下手だし、弱気・謙虚すぎてタフな交渉も出来ないし。。。日本人、もっと頑張れ〜！！！

Asian (South Korea and Taiwan) booths. South Koreans also had many private exhibition spaces as well.  Recently, Korean companies has been getting more shares in TVs, home electronics and mobile phones in UK, and Japanese companies on the other hand seem to have been loosing its ground. Japanese government boasts its “Cool Japan” concept, borrowed from UK’s “Cool Britannia“, to sell contemporary Japanese culture to the world. However, I have rarely seen it on international design shows or other important events here in London. I have been abroad for almost 15 years, and I see a great potential in Japanese design which is simple, delicate, user friendly and often aesthetically beautiful, and am always wondering why they don’t try harder to sell them to foreign markets, especially European countries where ‘design’ is important and appreciated. Instead of concentrating on Manga or Anime, which are significantly minor than design, Japanese government should have bigger and better ambition. They could have set up a large booth at 100% Design, for example, and try to sell their design to the world – but I know Japanese are tend to be provincial and scared to go abroad (and their communication and negotiation skills with non-Japanese is usually disastrous, as well as their English), and just satisfied with domestic little success…

Moo Grill Argentinian Coffee & Wine Bar @ Whitechapel

Time Out誌のレビューを見て、ホワイトチャペルにあるアルゼンチン料理のMoo Grillに行ってみた。リバプール・ストリート駅やスピタルフィールズに近いのにも関わらず、何となく寂れているCobb streetにある、間取りの狭い小さなお店で、店内は暗めの照明とダークウッドのインテリアでまとめられ、壁にはアルゼンチンのバーやカフェの古い写真が飾られていて、ブエノス・アイレスの場末の渋いバーにいる気分になる。そんな雰囲気とは裏腹に、日本に行った事があるというスタッフは、とてもフレンドリー。

フードメニューは朝食、ランチ、そして5時以降は、アルゼンチンものをメインに取り揃えたワインと一緒に、タパスがいただける。私たちは、アルゼンチン名物のサンドイッチ、Lomitoを注文。ジューシーなステーキ、ハム、チーズ、トマト、レタスが挟まったLomitoは、カラッと揚げられた手作りのフライドポテトがついて、ボリューム満点。美味しくて、つい完食してしまった。

2階席もあり、フロアに1台ずつあるテレビで、明日から始まるワールドカップの試合を毎日放映するそうだ。お決まりののパブ観戦だけでなく、ちょっと趣向を変えて、ビールの代わりにワインを片手にタパスをつまみに、お目当ての試合を観るのもいいかも。フォークランド紛争やマラドーナの神の手ゴールなどいろいろエピソードのある因縁の敵同士、アルゼンチン対イングランド戦があったら行きたいな。ファン同士が殴り合いの喧嘩とかしそうで面白そう！

We went to an Argentinian coffee & wine bar Moo Grill in Whitechapel, which we found in the Time Out review. Located on a desolated Cobb street near Liverpool Street station and Spitalfields, this small place, furnished with dark woods and dim lighting and its walls covered with old cafés and bars in Argentina, made me feel like I was in a gloomy bar in downtown Buenos Aires. But contrary to the atmosphere, the staffs were very friendly with cheerful Latin courtesy.

Moo Grill offers breakfast, lunch, and small appetizers after 5pm which you can enjoy with a glass of Argentinian wine. We ordered Argentinian sandwich Lomito with juicy steak, ham, cheese, tomato and lettuce and handmade crispy fries. It was so good that we finished it all, though it was quite big.

There is also a second floor seating area as well, and they are going to screen the World Cup games everyday with two TVs, one on each floor. Instead of going to a usual pub with a pint of beer, why don’t you try a glass of wine with tapas dishes for your team’s games at Moo grill? We would go if there is a game Argentina vs England, the archenemies (Falklands War, Maradona’s “Hand of God” etc.etc) – would love to see the fans kill with each other!

Thierry Henry’s ‘Hand Of God’ and Not-So-Fair World of Sports

先日18日に行われた2010年ワールドカップ（Ｗ杯）の欧州予選プレーオフ、フランス対アイルランドの第2戦で、フランスが延長戦の末、ティエリ・アンリのハンドで得たゴールで1−1の引き分け、ワールドカップ行きのチケットを手に入れた件で、「正義感の強い」イギリスメディアは連日大騒ぎだ。スポーツ欄だけではなく、ニュース欄でも大きく取り上げている。このハンドはビデオで見ても明らかにハンドなのに、レフェリーが見逃した。アイルランドサッカー協会（IFA）は国際サッカー連盟（FIFA）に抗議、再試合を申請したが、FIFAは却下、フランスサッカー連盟（FFF）も拒否した。全て予想された結果だ。アイルランドも勝ち目なしと、早々に諦めたようだ。試合の後、インタビューを受けたフランス人ジャーナリストは、ワールドカップでは大きなお金が動くし経済効果も大きいので、FFFは絶対再試合を受け入れないと断言していた。その通りだった。これが逆の立場だったら、どうなっていただろうと思う。

当のアンリはハンドは認めてるけど、審判の責任だからと謝ってないし、「再試合がフェア」と言ってるけど、それもFIFAが再試合拒否の裁定を出してからだ。代表辞退も考えたらしいけど、結局辞めないし。自分のイメージ挽回のために、口先だけで適当に言い逃れて、ほとぼりが冷めるのを待ってるんだろう。

八百長とまでは言わないけれど、都合のいい結果を正そうとしないその後のFIFAの対応が、やはりスポーツも所詮ビジネス、影響力のあるサッカー強国に有利な世界なのねと思わせる一件だ。The Sunday TImesで、興味深い「陰謀説」記事を見つけた。元フランス代表のミシェル・プラティニ欧州サッカー連盟の会長の手引きによって、今回のプレーオフは、強国に有利になるように、くじ引きではなく、世界ランキングの高い国と弱い国が当たるシード方式を採用したと言われている。強国に有利になるようにしているのには、高額のテレビ契約料やスポンサーの思惑も絡んでいるのかもしれない。また、プラティニ会長もFIFAのジョセフ・ゼップ・ブラッター会長も、ビデオ判定導入には何故か消極的だ。確かに、偶然にしては、なんだかうさんくさい。

フランスとイギリスのメディアの論調の違いも面白い。フランスは自国チームのふがいなさを酷評しつつも、FIFAやFFFの決定には異議はないようだ。かたやイギリスメディアは、「Cheat（いかさま）」「Fallen Idol（堕ちたアイドル）」等と手厳しい。これはアングロサクソンとラテンの価値観の違いか。ルールや公正さを重視するアングロサクソンに比べ、ラテン人は自分が良ければ全て良し、「運も実力のうち」「神様の思し召し」「ラッキー♪」って感じだろう。

またイングランド人には、この1件が、1986年ワールドカップ準々決勝で、マラドーナの「神の手」ゴールで、イングランドがアルゼンチンに敗れた悪夢を思い起こさせる。自国のことでないのに今回の大騒ぎは、このことも多いに関係してるのだと思う。

フランスは、対戦相手が多少なりとも自制心のあるアイルランドで良かったと胸を撫で下ろしてるだろう。これがエジプトやアルジェリアが相手だと大変なことになっていたかもしれない。サッカーの世界での権力のなさでワールドカップ行きを逃した、アイルランドチームが本当に気の毒だ。

There has been a huge media frenzy in UK about the Thierry Henry’s ‘Hand Of God’ during Ireland vs France World Cup 2010 play-off on November 18th and it’s aftermath: since France won a ticket to South Africa with 1-1, thanks to Henry’s ‘cheating’ act. UK media with “strong sense of mission to pursue justice” have been putting up big articles about  this incident, not only in sports sections but also in general sections, everyday since then. You can see clearly that it was handball, but the referee missed to see this crucial foul or chance to correct the mistake. Irish Football Association (IFA) demanded a rematch, but FIFA and the French Football Federation (FFF) said ‘NO’ – but it is all expected. IFA seems to give up already because they know that it is a fight they will never win. After the game, a French journalist who was interviewed by BBC said that FFF would never accept a replay, because big money and industries involved and economic effect would be enormous. He was right. But what it would happen, if France lost with Irish footballer’s  handball – would FIFA give the same judgement?

Henry admitted his handball but never say sorry. He said that replay would be fair for Ireland but AFTER FIFA and FFF refused a rematch. It was reported that he considered quitting “Les Bleus” but he decided to stay anyway – all talks doesn’t convince me if he is truly remorseful, but I believe he is saying whatever to repair his image and just waiting for everyone to forget about his ‘mistake’

I don’t call it setup, but FIFA and FFF’s reluctance  to correct their convenient result is truly disappointing, and now I strengthen my belief that soccer is just another business, and always a stronger with bigger political power wins – fair play is a mere myth for important games like this. I read an interesting article by the Sunday Times “Conspiracy or coque up?” The play-offs were seeded on the basis of world rankings in favour of the bigger nations, and it was reported that the proposal to introduce seeding had come from UEFA (president is former French player Michel Platini). Why? Could it be related to the advance long-term television contracts, or the influence by one of a big sponsor which will possibly gain huge profit if France win? For some reason, Platini and FIFA president Sepp Blatter are said to be reluctant to introduce video technology, which can bring fairer judgement – why? Maybe a coincidence, but all these things sound pretty dubious.

Also it is very interesting to see the different stances between British and French media. Though French media criticizes their team done terrible in the game but they don’t attack the FIFA and the FFF of their judgement. On the other hand, British media is harsh on Henry as ‘cheat’ or “fallen idol,’ as well as on the FIFA. Probably this is due to the difference in Anglo-Saxons and Latins mentality: in compare to Anglo-Saxons’ values in fairness and justice, Latins would just think, “luck is also a part of his ability” “miracle” “godsend” – they would never criticize someone who give them a jackpot, even though from a devil.

In addition, for English, this incident reminds them of the nightmarish Hand of God goal, scored by footballer Diego Maradona during the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter final Argentina vs England – probably it explains why British media is so obsessed with this incident which is not related to their own team.

French must be happy that the opponent was Ireland – if it was Egypt or Algeria, it would be a huge riot!

I am extremely sorry for Ireland who lost a chance to go to World Cup, due to a lack of political power in football world, rather than their lack of ability. Shame on Henry, shame on France, and shame on FIFA!
