Goodbye, Lite: the end of another free paper in London

9月18日に廃刊となったthelondonpaperと同時期（2006年）に発刊されたロンドンのフリーペーパー、London Liteも、先週13日金曜日に廃刊となった。月曜から金曜まで、黄色とえんじ色のユニフォーム姿のスタッフがチューブの駅の周りで夕方頃に配布、9月には発行部数40万部を記録していたLondon Liteだが、この廃刊は、The Evening Standardが有料から無料になった時に予想されていたから、さして驚かなかった。The Evening Standardが10月12日に無料になってから、両紙を読んでいたが、元有料紙だけあってなかなか充実した内容を誇るThe Evening Standardに比べ、内容が薄く、読み応えがない感は否めなかった。

しかし13日の金曜日を終わりの日としたのは、偶然か、それともイギリス人らしいブラック・ジョークなのか。

Another free paper in London, London Lite, is gone on last Friday, after its rival the londonpaper stopped its circulation on September 18. Launched in 2006 around the same time with the londonpaper, London Lite had a daily circulation of 400,000 in September, and was distributed around the tube stations across the city in the evening by the staffs in yellow and dark purple uniforms. I didn’t get surprised its discontinuance, because it was expected when the Evening Standard turned free on October 12th. I read both papers since then, but in compare to the Evening Standard with its substantial and wide variety of topics, London Lite was poor in quality and didn’t have much to read.

By the way, is it coincidence or a joke to choose Friday the 13th for its final day?

The London Evening Standard goes Free from Today

180年以上の歴史を持つロンドンの有料夕刊紙「The Evening Standard（イブニング・スタンダード）」が、今日12日から無料で配布されるようになった。チューブの駅の出入り口に陣取り、センセーショナルな新聞のトップニュースを独特の筆致で書いた看板を前にイブニングスタンダードを売る、オレンジ色のストライプのスタンドは、ロンドンの名物だった。しかし最盛期には65万部を誇った発行部数も、MetroやLondon Lite、thelondonpaper等無料紙の台頭で、近年は22万5千部にまで下落。今年の1月には、オーナーで、デイリー・メール紙などを発行するAssociated Newspapers社より、旧ソ連の国家保安委員会（KGB）の元スパイだった、ロシア人富豪／実業家・アレクサンドル・レベジェフ（Alexander Lebedev）氏に、なんと£1で75.1%の株を売却され、世間を驚かせた。今回無料紙となることで、発行部数を60万部に増やし、この数を武器に広告主を誘引し、生き残りを計る戦略だ。

ロンドンの地方紙であるイブニング・スタンダードは、ロンドン中心のニュースが多いが、国内外のニュースも取り上げている。内容は、私的には、Quality Press（クオリティ・プレス／高級紙）とTabloids（タブロイド／大衆紙）の間ぐらいの位置づけで、大衆紙よりもう少し真面目な記事が多いが、高級紙ほど小難しく、平坦な英語で書かれていて読みやすい。

ロンドンの他の無料紙「thelondonpaper」が先月廃刊となっただけに、イブニング・スタンダードの無料化はうれしい。現在、ロンドンの無料紙は、Metro、Londo Lite、そしてThe London Evening Standardの3紙（＋経済紙・City A.M.）。ただ、メディアの専門家によると、無料紙のパイは小さく、いずれLondon LiteはThe London Evening Standardと合併するか、姿を消すだろうとのこと。無料紙のみならず、インターネットでニュースを読む人が増え、既存の有料新聞も、軒並み発行部数を減らしている。インデペンデント（The Independent）やガーディアンの日曜紙・オブザーヴァー（The Observer）などは存亡の危機だと言う。イギリスの新聞業界はこれから淘汰が進むんだろうか。

The London’s regional evening newspaper with over 180-year history, “The Evening Standard” became a free newspaper from today, changed their name to “The London Evening Standard.” The Evening Standard vendors with eye-catching orange stripes, placed on the Tube exits, together with the signboards with a sensational headline of the day’s paper, was one of the London’s everyday life scenes. Once the Evening Standard boasted its circulation of 650,000 on its hay day, but now the number dropped to 255,000, due to the competition with emerging free papers such as Metro, London Lite, and thelondonpaper. This January, the owner of the Evening Standard Associated Newspapers, the publisher of Dairy Mail and London Lite, sold 75.1% of the Evening Standard stocks to an ex-KGB spy and Russian businessman, Alexander Lebedev for the astonishing price of £1. This move to make the Evening Standard free came in a bid to increase its circulation from 250,000 to 600,000, to attract potential sponsors for its survival.

The Evening Standard is a regional newspaper of London, but also covers national and international news, as well as London-centred news. For my point of view, the Evening Standard places in between Quality Press and Tabloids – more serious than tabloids, but less tortuous and easier to read than quality press.

This addition to London’s free papers is welcomed, after thelondonpaper discontinued as of the last month. Currently there are three free papers in London – Metro, Londo Lite, and the London Evening Standard (+ financial paper City A.M.). However, a media expert suggested that London has a space for only one free evening paper, and the Lite would eventually close or merge with the Standard. Not only free papers but also existed newspapers have been loosing their circulation, as many people read news online now. It is said that the Independent and The Observer (the Guardian‘s sunday paper) are not doing well adn could fail anytime. Probably UK’s newspaper industries will go into the process of selection soon.

Free Newspapers in London

ロンドンには、地下鉄の駅周辺等で無料で配られている新聞が３種類ある（Metro、thelondonpaper、London Lite）。３誌ともニュースやイベント、お店やレストラン情報、有名人のゴシップなど盛りだくさん、文章も外国人にも読みやすい簡単で短い記事が多く、ロンドンやイギリスの情報収集のみならず英語の良い勉強にもなると思う。

MetroとLondon Liteはタブロイド紙（tabloid）／大衆紙で全国２位のDaily Mailを擁するヨーロッパで最大のメディア会社Associated Newspapers社が、thelondonpaperはオーストラリアのメディア王ルパート・マードックの所有するNews International社（イギリス大衆紙No.1のThe Sun、一般紙The Timesも発行）が発行している。Metroは朝、thelondonpaperとLondon Liteは夕方に、月曜から木曜まで配布される。一番の古株、Metroは1999年に、他の２紙は2004年に発行された。それ以来この夕刊2紙は良いライバル関係にあります。

There are 3 free newspapers in London (Metro/thelondonpaper/London Lite). These papers talk about news, events, stores, restaurants, gossip of celebrities and lot more. These papers are also useful for me and foreigners, not only get the information about London and UK, but also they can learn English as the articles in the papers are plain and short.

Metro and London Lite are both owned by Associated Newspapers (part of No.2 tabloid  paper Daily Mail and General Trust). thelondonpaper is owned by News International (who also own the companies that publish No. 1 tabloid paper The Sun and quality paper The Times), which is the company of Australian media tycoon Rupert Murdoch. The oldest one is Metro and first published in 1999. thelondonpaper and London Lite came out in 2006. Since then thelondonpaper and London Lite are competing with each other, distributing side by side at around the tube station.
