Free Outdoor Screenings of Wimbledon & Film @ Bankside Mix

6月20日から7月7日まで開催の2011年のGreat British Summerイベントは、ロンドン市内3カ所（Bankside Mix / Cardinal Place / New Street Square）でのウィンブルドン選手権と映画の屋外無料上映。先週土曜日にBankside Mixを通りかかった時は、フェデラーの試合を中継していたので、黄色・オレンジ・白のユニオンジャックが描かれたバンの前に置かれたデッキチェアは、満席ではなかったけど、なかなかの盛況。7月3日にウィンブルドンが終わったら、グリース、ノッティングヒル、ソーシャル・ネットワーキングの3作品と、最終日7日は現在投票受付中の5作品の中から選ばれるコメディ映画が上映される。

This year’s Great British Summer offers you an opportunity to enjoy free outdoor screenings of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and films at three locations in central London (Bankside Mix / Cardinal Place / New Street Square), from June 20 to July 7. When we passed by the Bankside Mix last Saturday, a van painted in orange, yellow and white Union Jack was screening Federer’s match, and sun deck chairs in front of the van were quite occupied though not completely full. After the Wimbledon Championships is over on July 3, three films (Grease, Notting Hill and Social Networking) will be screened and one of the comedy films, currently going through  online voting process, on the last day of the screenings.

Hydrogen Bus @ Southbank Mix

Bankside Mix（バンクサイド・ミックス）に最近オープンしたVapianoに行った時に見かけた、Hydrogen Bus（水素バス）。調べてみたら、EUのCUTE（Cleaner Urban Transport for Europe）プロジェクトの一環として、2003〜2007年に試用期間を経て、昨年12月から本格的に運用開始されたという（tfl information / ガーディアン紙記事）。同時に、イギリス最大の水素供給ステーションが東ロンドンのLeytonにオープンした。

ロンドンでは毎年、4300人が大気汚染によって命を落としているという。水素バスは、水蒸気を排出するだけで、大気汚染はゼロ。タンク一杯の水素で、18時間以上運転可能だそうだ。現在、水素バスが走っているRV1ルートは、ロンドン塔、テート・モダン、サウス・バンク・センター、ロンドン・アイ、コヴェント・ガーデンなど、主な観光地を結ぶので、環境に優しい都市・ロンドンをアピールするのにぴったり。環境保護に執念を燃やすボリス・ジョンソン市長は、オリンピックの開催される2012年には、15台の水素タクシーを含む最低150台の水素自動車の導入を目標としている。しかし、水素燃料のタクシーがたったの15台って、少なくない？助成金が出てもコストがかかり過ぎて、この不況の中、個人経営のタクシーには敬遠されるのか。

ちなみにバンクサイド・ミックスのVapianoは、壁一杯の窓から入る太陽光で明るく広々としていて、しかもオープンから間もないせいか客も少なく、ゆったりできる。テート・モダンやバラ・マーケット（周りのレストランはいつも混んでいる）に行くなら、穴場です。

We saw a hydrogen Bus stopping at a bus stop in front of the Bankside Mix, when we went to newly opened Vapiano at the Bankside Mix. After a trial of three hydrogen buses in London between 2003 and 2007 as part of the EU-sponsored CUTE (Cleaner Urban Transport for Europe), the UK’s first permanent hydrogen bus was launched in December 2011 (tfl information / the Guardian article). At the same time, the UK’s largest hydrogen refuelling station opened in Leyton, east London.

It is said that more than 4,300 people lost their lives in London due to poor air quality every year. All that comes out of these hydrogen buses is water vapour and the vehicle can operate for more than 18 hours without refueling. RV1 route, where currently hydrogen buses are operated, connects popular tourist attractions such as the Tower of London, the Tate Modern, the South Bank arts complex, the London Eye and Covent Garden – perfect to appeal ‘clean’ London to visitors. Green-obsessed London mayor Boris Johnson aims to encourage a minimum of 150 hydrogen-powered vehicles on the road by 2012 including 15 hydrogen-powered taxis. Great, but isn’t the number of hydrogen taxis too small? Probably cost conscious self-employed taxi owners don’t want to spend too much money to upgrade to low emission vehicles under this recession, even with some financial incentive from the city government.

By the way, I recommend Vapiano at the Bankside Mix when you go to the Tate Modern or nearby Borough Market where restaurants around are always packed – it is spacious and bright with plenty of sunshine coming through floor-to-ceiling windows, and not many people know it at this moment as opened recently.

The Refinery Bar&Restaurant @ Bankside Mix

Bankside Mix（バンクサイド・ミックス）にあるバー＆レストラン「The Refinery」。昼間に食べたサンドイッチ（steak sandwichとchicken club）が美味しかったので、ディナーにも行ってみた。天井が高く、広々として明るい店内は、バーエリアとレストランエリアに分かれていて。木のフロア、レストランエリアの古ぼけた感じの家具が居心地が良い。外にはポップでカラフルなテーブルと椅子が並べられていて、天気の良い日は外で日向ぼっこしながらゆったりというのも良い（写真は全て昼に行った時のもの）。

ディナーは、チェリートマトとバジル、パルメザンチーズのスパゲッティとリングイネのボンゴレ、サイドディッシュにローストしたポテトとロケットのサラダを注文。でも一口食べて、すぐに後悔。ブリティッシュ・レストランやパブで、パスタを注文してはいけないという黄金律を忘れていた。今まで、イギリス系のレストランで食べたパスタが美味しかった試しがない。2皿ともパスタにコシがなく、ボンゴレのソースは、はっきり言って味気ない。ニンニクや唐辛子のパンチが効いてなくて、塩味も足りない。これなら料理下手の私が作ったボンゴレの方がましなくらい。イギリス料理を頼むんだった。失敗した！

We went to a bar & restaurant ‘The Refinery‘ at Bankside Mix for dinner, as the sandwiches (steak sandwich and chicken club) we had for lunch were pretty good. Sunny and spacious inside with high ceiling were divided in bar and restaurant areas. Wooden floors and grungy-chic decor in the restaurant area were pretty nice + relaxing (the photos are all taken when we went for lunch). There are colorful + pop tables & chairs outside and you can relax under the sun on a nice day.

For the dinner, we ordered “today’s special” Linguine alle vongole, spaghetti w/ fresh cherry tomatoes, basil & parmesan vinaigrette, and rosemary & rock salt potatoes and rocket & parmesan salad as side dishes. After one bite, I regretted that I ordered pasta – I completely forgot about a golden rule, not to order pasta at British restaurants or pubs! I’ve never had a good pasta dish at the British places. Pasta was not “al dente” for both plates. Vongole sauce had no taste without the punch of garlic and chili, and needed more salt. I am not good at cooking but my spaghetti alle vongle is even better in compare! I should have ordered British food instead…

2008年7月にオープンした、バンクサイド・ミックスは、オフィス、レストラン、カフェ、バー、ショップ、スーパーマーケット等が入った複合施設。最寄り駅はSouthwark（サザーク）とLondon Bridge（ロンドン・ブリッジ）で、テート・モダンのすぐ背後に位置する。それまで美術館がある以外は不毛の地だったこのエリアに、少し活気を与えたが、不況のせいか1年あまりで、店舗2軒（写真の黄色とブルーの板塀で囲まれたところ）が閉店。今なおこの2店を含む4カ所の商業スペースが空いたままだ。現在、その隣にも大掛かりな再開発ビルが建設中だが、テナントはちゃんと入るんだろうか。

Opened in July 2008, Bankside Mix is the major mixed use development scheme and provides office, restaurants, cafes, a bar and shops. Situated behind Tate Modern on Southwark Street, Bankside Mix is minutes from Southwark and London Bridge tube stations. Bankside Mix helps vitalize the area where used to be nothing exciting but Tate Modern. However, after one year of its opening, two retails already failed (the spaces covered with yellow and blue boards in the photo), and there are four empty commercial spaces not filled in. Currently new development just next to Bankside Mix is being constructed, but can they attract tenants?
