Paul Klee: Making Visible @ Tate Modern

テートモダンで開催中のPaul Klee: Making Visible展（10月16日〜2014年3月9日）は、スイス生まれの20世紀ヨーロッパ・モダニズムの巨匠・パウル・クレーの回顧展で、ロンドンの今年秋・冬の目玉展の一つ。世界中のコレクションから、絵画、ドローイング、水彩画が集められ、クレー自身が決めた過去の展覧会での作品の展示の順序を、この展覧会で再現している。

全17室からなる展覧会では、クレーの作品を時系列に展示。ワシリー・カンディンスキーやフランツ・マルクとともにのミュンヘンで結成した表現主義画家たちの集まり・青騎士グループのメンバーとして、多彩な四角形を組み合わせた抽象的な独自の画風の確立した1910年代に始まり、教鞭をとったバウハウスでの10年間の作品、そしてナチス政権により「退廃芸術」のレッテルを貼られて新しい教職を剥奪されスイスのベルンに亡命した後、難病と闘いつつ多くの作品を生み出した晩年の作品へと続く。

クレーの作品の多くは小さいサイズだが、大きさに反比例し、その小さなカンバスは、豊かな色彩と自由な想像力に満ちている。見応えのある展覧会。

Paul Klee: Making Visible (Oct 16 – Mar 9, 2014) at Tate Modern is a major retrospective of the early 20-centry master of European modernism, Paul Klee, and one of the London’s must-see exhibitions this fall&winter. Paintings, drawings and watercolours from collections around the world are displayed alongside each other as Klee originally intended, often for the first time since Klee exhibited them himself.

This 17-room exhibition traces Klee’s career chronologically, beginning in Munich during the World War I, when he joined Der Blaue Reiter founded by Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky and established of his unique style of abstract patchworks of colour. It follows the decade of teaching and working at the Bauhaus, and his prolific final years in the 1930s in Bern, after he was dismissed from his teaching position by the Nazis and took refuge in Switzerland, as his works were labelled ‘degenerate art’ in Germany.

Most of his works are small in size, but on the opposite to its size, those are filled with rich colors and lots of imagination. Intriguing.

Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde @ Tate Modern

テート・モダンの「Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde」は、ヨーロッパにおけるアバンギャルドの重要人物であるオランダ人アーティスト、テオ・ファン・ドースブルフをテーマとした、イギリス初の大規模な展覧会。デ・ステイルの発起人でもあるファン・ドースブルフは、アート、デザイン、著作活動、詩、建築等多方面で活躍した。アーティスト、建築家、デザイナーたちが参加したこのアート・ムーブメントは、第一次大戦後のヨーロッパに、精神的ハーモニーと秩序を打ち立てると言う新しいユートピア的な理想を追求、垂直と水平という厳密な幾何学をベースにしたインターナショナル・スタイルを押し進めた。この展覧会は、ファン・ドースブルフのオランダ新造形主義の推進者的役割、彼のダダイスト的パーソナリティ、バウハウスへの影響、国際構成主義とのつながり、そして「コンクリート・アート」グループの創設にスポットを当てている。ジャン・アルプ、コンスタンティン・ブランクーシ、モホリ＝ナジ・ラースロー、ピエト・モンドリアン、フランシス・ピカビア、ヘリット・リートフェルト、クルト・シュヴィッタース、ゾフィー・トイバー等の350点以上の作品の他、ファン・ドースブルフの、ストラスブールにあるCafé Aubetteの絵画とデザイン、家具、タイポグラフィー、雑誌、ステンドグラス、映画、音楽、彫刻等を展示している。

ドースブルフのアート自体は、少し暗い感じで線も弱く、特段印象に残っていないのだが、計11室に渡る、デ・ステイルに影響を受けた、偉大なアーティストたちの多彩な作品群には圧倒される。当時のライフスタイルと考え方にに大きな影響を与えたアートムーブメントに連なる、シンプルだけれどカラフルで、インパクトのある作品たちは、80年以上近くも前のものと思えないほどモダンで、古さを感じない。第一次世界大戦と第二次世界大戦の合間という激動の時代の最中にあって、新たな理想を打ち立てたアーティストやデザイナー、建築家たちの強いエネルギーと情熱が、今でも強く感じられる。ファン・ドースブルフは、モンドリアンをはじめとする仲間と比べて、アーティストとしてはさほど高い評価を受けていないけれど、リーダーシップを発揮し、彼の理想をヨーロッパ中に広め、ムーブメントの成功につなげたことが、彼の偉大な功績だと言えるだろう。

“Van Doesburg and the International Avant-Garde” at Tate Modern is the first major UK exhibition, devoted to the Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg, pivotal figure of the European avant-garde. Van Doesburg, who practiced in art, design and writing, poetry and architecture, founded the movement and magazine De Stijl. This artistic movement of painters, architects and designers sought to build a new utopian ideal of spiritual harmony and order in the aftermath of World War I, advocating an international style of art and design, based on a strict geometry of horizontals and verticals. This exhibition explores van Doesburg’s role as promoter of Dutch Neoplasticism, his Dada personality, his efforts to influence the Bauhaus, his links with international Constructivists, and his creation of the group Art Concret. Including over 350 works by key artists as Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, László Moholy-Nagy, Piet Mondrian, Francis Picabia, Gerrit Rietveld, Kurt Schwitters and Sophie Taeuber, the exhibition features van Doesburg’s Counter-Composition paintings and designs for the Café Aubette in Stasbourg, as well as furniture, typography, magazines, stained glass, film, music, sculpture etc.

Van Doesburg’s works are kind of gloomy and weak, and I was not so impressed. But the exhibition includes a variety of works by great artists and designers who were influenced by the movement, is quite spectacular. Simple, colorful, and powerful works are still modern and strong, after more than 80 years – I can still feel the energy, and passion of the artists and designers of the art movement that affected the lifestyle and values during the period in turmoil between WWI and WWII. Although van Doesburg had never gained high recognition as an artist in compare to his fellowmen such as Mondrian, but his leadership and efforts to spread his ideal to whole Europe, which led the movement to great success, are the significant achievement that deserves great recognition.

Albion cafe @ The Boundary Hotel

Shoreditch（ショーディッチ）地区に、あのテレンス・コンラン卿がてがけたブティック・ホテル、The Boundaryがオープンした。ビクトリア朝時代の倉庫を改造したホテルには、バウハウス、イームズ、コルビジェ等1室ごとにインテリアが違う17の客室の他、伝統的なイギリス料理とフレンチを提供するレストランレストラン、カフェ・デリが入っている。客室と屋上のバー／レストランは4月にオープン予定。
写真は、1階にあるカフェ、Albion。白を基調とした、カントリースタイルをモダンにアレンジした店内では、伝統的なイギリスの軽食やデザート類が楽しめる。朝8時から12時まで、毎日やっているのも嬉しい。ホクストンやBrick Lane（ブリックレーン）、Spitalfields （スピタルフィールド）Marketからも歩ける距離なので、近くに来た際は覗いてみて下さい。

Sir Terence Conran’s new boutique hotel, The Boundary, just opened in Shoreditch, in January 2009. The Boundery, is in a converted Victorian warehouse, and contains a restaurants, serves classic English/French, and an all-day cafe with mini food store. The hotel’s bedrooms, decorated with different design theme inspired by legendary designers or design movements, and a rooftop bar and grill will open in April.

The pictures are of the Albion, a cafe on the 1st floor. The decor of the cafe is a country style based on white, arranged with modern twist. You can enjoy Brits’ favorite food all day from 8am to midnight, 7 days a week! Hoxton, Brick Lane, and Spitalfields Market is within a walking distance.
