BBC News “UK snow: Zoomable Mosaic of Your Pictures”

イギリスはここ１週間寒波に見舞われ、寒い日が続いている。上2枚の画像は、BBC Newsウェブサイトで見つけた「zoomable（拡大できる）」写真のモザイク。雪の公園にいる2匹の鹿の画像、「＋」を何度もクリックしていくと、徐々に、人々がBBCに過去1週間の間に送ってきた、多くの雪景色の写真が現れる。巧妙で、面白い。

UK has been experiencing big freeze for a week, and I found an interesting ‘zoomable’ mosaic on BBC News website (top photo). When you zoom in by clicking ‘+’ many times, you start to see many pictures that people sent BBC of the snow in the past week (second photo). Clever.

‘The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team’ Graffiti by Pure Evil @ Broadway Market

ハックニーのBroadway Market（ブロードウェイ・マーケット）の街角で、Pure Evilが描いた「The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team（ハックニー略奪チームの新しいロゴ）」を見つけた。昨年ロンドンで起こった暴動とオリンピックがモチーフのこの作品は、Pure Evilいわく、オリンピックはVIPたちがエンジョイできるパーティのようなもので、自分たちは蚊帳の外でお呼びじゃないという、ハックニー住民の失望感を表しているという。

その気持ちは分からなくはない。オリンピックのチケットは高額だし、ロンドンの中心街やオリンピック会場は五輪で盛り上がってるけれども、貧困層の住むイーストロンドンを含むその他のエリアは別世界。オリンピックのロゴも国旗も滅多に見かけなかったし、パブでもオリンピック中継はあまりやっておらず、街が分断されているかのように感じたのは本当だ。

私個人の感想を言わせてもらえば、オリンピックは思った以上に面白かった。こんなに短期集中的にスポーツを見たことは人生初めてだし、世界的イベントがロンドンで行われた時にここにいられて実際観戦できて、本当に良かったと思う。ただし、BBCのオリンピック中継には少し物申したい。The Telegraph紙でも伝えているように、ともかくイギリス人選手のことばっかりで、ホスト国だと言うのにイギリス人選手が出ていない試合やマイナーなスポーツはほとんど無視、その日行われた全試合の結果を伝えるダイジェストさえなし。私たちはケーブルテレビに加入しているので、BBCの五輪特別チャンネルでほとんどの試合を生で見れたのだが、同じ時間に試合が重なると、当然のようにイギリス人やヨーロッパ人の選手が出る試合が優先される。柔道や卓球など、ワクワクして試合が始まるのを待っていたのに、全然違う国の選手の試合を見せられて失望したことも何度か。仕方ないことだが、せめてスクリーンを分割するとか小さな囲みを入れるとかして、他の試合も見せて欲しかった。ケーブルテレビに加入していない友人などは、現地にいるにも関わらず、早々にテレビ観戦は諦めてネットのニュースで結果をチェックしていたそう。日本のテレビも日本人のことばかりだけれど、ロンドンは何と言ってもホストシティ、しかも住民の半数が外国生まれで国際都市を謳っている割に、この有様。外国人だって、TV license（受信料）払ってるのに。。。オリンピック開始前には文句ばっかり言って冷めてたイギリス人が、こんなに熱狂的で愛国心満々になるなんて、思いもしなかった。

I found this graffiti, ‘The New Logo for the Hackney Looting Team‘ painted by Pure Evil at the corner of Broadway Market in the heart of Hackney. Pure Evil explained the message behind it is a disenfranchisement that people in Hackney felt about the Olympics, which they thought it had been a bit of a party for the VIPs and they hadn’t been invited and included.

It may be a bit true. The Olympic tickets were quite expensive, and I felt the Olympic atmosphere around the Game venues and downtown London, but it seemed nothing was happening in some areas including deprived neighborhood in East London – very few olympic symbols or national flags, and little olympic viewing at a local pub. I felt like the city was divided somehow.

Overall I really enjoyed the Olympic myself. I am glad that I was here when this great event took place in London. But I and my non-British friends had a little problem with BBC Olympic coverage. They constantly and repeatedly talked about British athletes, but almost no coverage for the non-popular games that British athletes were not expected for medals (The Telegraph). We have a cable TV, showing most of the games live, but if multiple games of the same sport taking place at the same time, the coverage gave a priority to British and European athletes. Of course they should mainly cover British olympians, as BBC is the British TV station, but they didn’t even do few minutes of digest for all the games of the day. UK is the host country and I believe they have some responsibility to broadcast wide variety of the games not only for British but also for both foreign visitors and residents. I was here in front of the TV at home many times, but I sometimes got disappointed by watching the game I did care less. They could split the screen or could insert a small screen at the corner of main screen to show other games as well! Situation for some of my friends who don’t have cable TV was even worse – they just gave up watching TV and checked internet for a result and news. I thought London is the cosmopolitan city that half of the residents are foreign-born… We foreigners also pay for TV license! British people were rather unenthsiastic before the Olympic started, but I was surprised that they turned to be very fanatic and patriotic at the end (The Time blog).

チャイナタウンで見つけたこの中国人のオジサンは、何とこの人力車で中国からロンドンにやってきたそう（BBCニュース）。北京オリンピックを見て感銘を受け、次の開催地であるロンドンを目指すことを決意、2020年5月23日に中国の自宅を出発してから、16カ国1764市を通る、14万キロ以上の道程をやってきた。彼曰く、平和と環境保護というメッセージを世界に伝え続けたいと、次は2016年オリンピック開催地であるリオデジャネイロに向かう予定だそう。こんな人力車でよく頑張った。ご苦労様！

On the main street of China Town, I happened to see this Chinese man who traveled from China to London with his rickshaw (BBC news). He was inspired to travel to the next host city for the Games, while he saw the Olympic in Beijing, and he has travelled more than 90,000km through 16 countries and 1,764 cities since he left his home in China on May 23, 2010. He says he wants to carry on spreading his message of peace and environmental protection, and next he is going to head to Brazil for Rio 2016. How to Enjoy London Summer Olympic 2012

オリンピックが始まって3日。英メディアが絶賛していた開会式は、イギリスを代表する舞踏家・Akram Khan（アクラム・カーン）が振り付けを担当したダンス以外、私的には期待外れだった。イギリスの歴史の一部やNHSがテーマの部分は、イギリスをよく知る人以外には少し難しい内容だったし、イギリス人が世界に誇る（と信じている）ものを取りあえずぶち込んだという感じで、全体的にまとまりがなかったように思ったのは私だけか。

始まる前はオリンピックにはあまり興味がなかったのに、見始めたらハマってしまった。同時進行的に開催される試合の中から、見たい試合を探すのに便利なサイトが、オリンピック公式ウェブサイト。左上の「Schedule & Results」をクリックすると、その日行われる全試合のスケジュールが網羅され、競技名をクリックするとタイムリーに結果がわかる。

Day 3 of London Summer Olympic. The opening ceremony was a bit of a disappointment for me except the performance of the British acclaimed dancer Akram Khan, despite British media bragged about it. Some of the British history and NHS part were a bit difficult to understand for foreigners who don’t know much about UK, and I felt like it was a bit of a mess and confusing, by putting all the “best of British” that British believe that everyone in the world knows.

I was not so keen on Olympics before it started, but now I am into it since I started to see the games. There are many games taking place simultaneously everyday, so I check London 2012 official site to search schedule of the games I want to see. The “Schedule & Results” page shows all the games of the day, and you can know a live result by clicking each sport.

イギリス選手が中心だけれど、BBCのオリンピック・サイトも、試合のスケジュールや見所、メダル獲得状況が一目で分かって便利。

BBC Olympic site is also useful, as it shows all the schedules, results and medals, though it focuses more on British athletes.

サイト中の「LIVE」をクリックすると、開催中の試合がライブで見られ、ページの下の「Catch Up」で、全てではないけれど見逃した試合も見られる。

You can see a live game online by clicking ‘live’, and also a game you miss, though there may be not all of them, with “Catch up” at the bottom of the page.

New Look for BBC 2012

ロンドン・オリンピック開催まで200日を切った（正確に言うと192日）。Tube（ロンドン地下鉄）各駅やBlackfriars（ブラックフライアーズ）駅、 Farrindon（ファリンドン）駅などの鉄道駅の改装といったインフラの整備や、様々な建設工事がロンドン市内のあちこちで急ピッチで進められており、オリンピックが近づいていることを感じさせる。もっともロンドンの住人は、犬も歩けば棒に当たるじゃないけれど、行く先々で遭遇する工事現場の騒音や通行止め、道幅減少などに閉口しているけれど。

そして、イギリスの国営放送BBCが去年7月に立ち上げたオリンピック特集ウェブサイト・BBC 2012もこの度お化粧直しされた。このサイトは、ニュース、スポーツ、ドラマ、アート、カルチャー、コメディ、交通情報や役立つ情報など、BBCのオンライン、テレビ、ラジオのオリンピック関連コンテンツ（ライブ、ビデオ、オーディオ、写真、インタビュー、裏話など）が一堂に集められているので、ロンドン・オリンピック委員会のLondon 2012とともに、オリンピックや関連イベントの情報収集に便利かも。→詳細はBBCブログで

It is less than 200 days (precisely saying, 192 days) to go til London Olympic 2012, and all kinds of constructions and building works, including maintenance works of some tube stations and revamping rail stations such as Blackfriars station and Farrindon station, now seem to be speeding up and this make us feel the Olympic is coming. Exciting, though many Londoners complain the noise, reduced road width and diversion caused by never-ending works that we encounter every corner of the city.

BBC, British national broadcaster that most of you already know, has changed the look of BBC 2012, a website launched last July, dedicated to London Olympic. The site showcases a variety of contents arising from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, ie. news, sport, drama, arts, culture, comedy, traffics as well as other useful info, gathered from BBC’s online, television and radio, in the form of live coverage, video and audio clips, background stories, pictures and cast interviews. 長いクリスマス・ホリデーがようやく終わった。今年はクリスマスが土曜日に当たったので、クリスマスの休日が27日（月曜日）に、そしてボクシング・デーが28日（火曜日）にずれ込んだからだ。ようやく通常の生活に戻ると思いきや、数日するとまたまた新年の休日（1日〜3日）になってしまうので、その間ずっと閉まっているお店やレストランも多い。→イギリスの休日（バンク・ホリデー）はこちらで。

上のビデオは、今日、BBCで放映されるドキュメンタリー「Poler Bear – Spy on the Ice」から抜粋されたもの。撮影に使われた「spy cams（スパイカメラ）」を、好奇心から近づいたホッキョクグマが、見事に破壊する姿が妙に可愛い。つまらない番組が幅を利かせているホリデー・シーズン中、少しは楽しめそうな、数少ない番組。

テレビもつまらないし、ホリデーシーズンでちゃんと機能していないロンドンを、明日からしばらく抜け出します。1月10日はブログを再開しようと思っていますので、皆さん、良い年末年始をお過ごしくださいね！

Finally long Christmas weekend was over. Christmas day was on Saturday this year, so Monday 27th became Christmas day holiday and Tuesday 28th was Boxing Day holiday subsequently. But the business here is still far from normal and many business and restaurants remain closed, as New Year’s weekend (1st to 3rd) will come in few days time. → check here for UK bank holidays

The video above is an excerpt of the BBC documentary “Poler Bear – Spy on the Ice” starts soon today. Curiosity-ridden polar bears destroy disguised hi-tech “spy cams” – it is cute and funny. Among all the boring TV programs and films during this holiday season, this documentary is one of the few programs enjoyable to see.

TV is full of trash this time and the city is not fully functioning, therefore we will get out of the town for a while from tomorrow. I will restart this blog on January 10th (hopefully). Have a happy new year everyone!
