Marks & Spencer Scottish Shortbread Tin

最近、マークス＆スペンサーのストアブランドのパッケージデザインが可愛い（また追々紹介します）。ちょっとレトロなデザインのクリスマス用缶入りビスケット各種（参考：gumo gazette）もよくできていて、プレゼントやパーティの手みやげに最適。この、ロンドン名物2階建てバスをモチーフにした缶入りビスケットは、スコットランド発祥の伝統菓子・Shortbread（ショートブレッド）3種27個入りで、お値段は£8。イラストを描いたのは、イラストレーターのPhil Hankinson（フィル・ハンキンソン）氏。そのレトロでクラシックな画風は、チェコスロバキアの絵本作家・Miroslav Sasek（ミロスラフ・サセック）の名作「This is London」（1959年）を彷彿させる。中のビスケットを食べ終わっても、小物入れとして使えそう。ロンドンのお土産にもぴったり。

Recently package design of Marks & Spencer‘s store brands has improved (I will talk more later). Retro-feel Christmas biscuit tins is well-done (reference: gumo gazette), and is good for a present and gift. This tin box with London’s famous double-decker contains a selection of 27 shortbreads in 3 varieties, and costs £8. The package was designed by illustrator Phil Hankinson, and the his style resembles the old classic “This is London” (1959) by Czech illustrator and auther, Miroslav Sasek. You can re-use the tin box after finishing all biscuits, and this is a great souvenir of London as well.

Green & Black’s chocolate – hard to resist!

私のイギリスでのお気に入りのチョコレートは、何と言ってもGreen & Black’s。Green & Black’sはイギリスのチョコレート会社で、現在はイギリスの菓子・飲料会社のCadbury（キャドバリー）の傘下にある。名前の「グリーン」はオーガニックへのこだわり、「ブラック」はチョコレートをイメージし、ブランドのスタイルを表している。その名の通り、Green & Black’sは、フェアトレードで仕入れたカカオを使って、オーガニックのチョコレート、アイスクリーム、ビスケット、ホットチョコレートを生産しており、イギリス初のフェアトレードの・マークも取得した。100gの板チョコ（写真上）で£1.75（スーパーでの値段）と、他のチョコレートに比べて割高だけれど、その価値はある。別にオーガニックに凝ってる訳じゃないけど、Green&Black’sのチョコはとてもマイルドで、甘ったるくなく（キャドバリーは甘すぎる）、チープなチョコにありがちな嫌な後味もない。パッケージも、シンプルで上品で良い。

This is my favorite chocolates here in UK — Green & Black’s. Green & Black’s is a UK-based chocolate manufacturer, and now owned by Cadbury. Its name, “Green” stands for the strict organic principles of the founders, and “Black” for the intensity of the chocolate and iconic style of the brand. The company produces a organic and premium range of chocolate bars, ice cream, biscuits and hot chocolate, using a fairtrade cocoa, and it was awarded the UK’s first Fairtrade mark. The price at the supermarket is £1.75 (100g) and is more expensive than other chocolate bars, but it deserves the price. I am not an organic freak, but I buy the chocolates with its taste — mild and not too sweet or sugary (like Cadbury’s), and no after taste, which is common among cheap ones. I also like their simple and sophisticated package too.
