Newcomers on Broadway Market

久しぶりにBroadway Market（ブロードウェイ・マーケット）に行ったら、新しいお店が何軒かオープンしていた。いつも混雑しているl’eau à LA BOUCHE （ロアラブッシュ）が案の定満席だったので、新しいイタリアン・カフェのDino Deli（ディーノ・デリ）でランチ。統一性も個性もないセカンドハンド（中古）家具に、無国籍風オブジェや色あせたラグで飾られた小さな店内は、大学街の学生向けカフェという感じで、個性的でセンスのいい店が並ぶブロードウェイ・マーケットでは見劣りする。でもサンドイッチもコーヒーもまずまずで、人の入りもまあまあ。

I went to Broadway Market after many months, and found some new places opened. Well-liked l’eau à LA BOUCHE was full as we anticipated, we tried a new Italian café Dino Deli. Decorated with mix & match of second hand furniture which don’t have much character either, shabby rug and quirky objects, Dino is like a scruffy student café near college and does not meet hip Broadway Market standard. However, their sandwich and coffee were OK and people came anyway.

Stoke Newingtonに本店がある、メンズ＆レディースのセレクト・ショップ、Hub。ブロードウェイ・マーケットの入口近くにある。黒く塗られた建物が印象的。

69b is a women’s fashion boutique, owned by a stylist who has worked for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Exit and i-D magazines.

Camden Passage Antique Market @ Angel, Islington

イズリントン・エンジェルにある有名なアンティーク・マーケット、Camden Passage（カムデン・パッセージ）。1960年代にアンティーク・マーケットが開かれるようになった。昔ながらの店構えを残すカムデン・パッセージは、外国人がイメージするイギリスを体現している。昨日のショーディッチのマーケットと比べるとずいぶん落ち着きがあって、のんびり散策するのにぴったり。トラムの車庫であった建物にテナントとして入っていたり、脇に入った小道に小さい店を構えていたり、屋台を出していたりと、店の形態も様々だ。

マーケットの開かれる毎週水・土曜日以外も開いている店もあり、またElk in the WoodsやBreakfast Clubといったカフェやパブ、毛糸のお店Loopや可愛い雑貨屋のSMUG、オーガニックのフローズン・ヨーグルトを売るFrae、高級チョコレートを扱うPaul A Young、またイギリス人女優のSadie Frost（サディ・フロスト。ジュード・ロウの元妻）とJemima Frenchが経営するFrostFrenchと言うブティックもあって、マーケットがない日でも人通りが絶えない。

Camden Passage is known for its antiques shops, and hosts antique market founded in the 1960s on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings. The street still keeps old storefronts and signage and the good old Britishness that foreign visitors imagine of. It is much more tranquil and better looking in compare to the anarchic Shoreditch market, and perfect place for strolling around. There are different styles of shops: tenants in a former tram shed, small shops in an arcade or on a side alley, and market stools on the street.

The street is never be deserted as many shops open other than market days and there are also non-antique shops to attract visitors, such as cafés and pubs like The Elk in the Woods and The Breakfast Club, Loop yarn shop, SMUG lifestyle store, organic frozen yoghurt shop Frae, Paul A Young chocolaterie, and FrostFrench boutique owned by British actress Sadie Frost (Jude Law’s ex) and Jemima French.

Carnaby Street 50th Anniversary

2010年は、カーナビー・ストリート（Carnaby Street）の50周年記念の年。60年代に、モッズやヒッピー・ファッションの中心地であったカーナビー・ストリートに、独立系のブティックやデザイナーたちが店を構え、また周辺の通りには、様々なアングラのミュージック・バーがあった。Wardour Streetの角にあった伝説的なクラブ・Marquee Clubでは、ビートルズやザ・フー、ローリング・ストーンズなどが演奏し、彼らがたむろしたカーナビー・ストリートは、スウィンギング・ロンドンで、もっともクールな場所になった。

今もカーナビー・ストリートは、ロンドンの代表的なショッピング・ストリートの一つで、いつも観光客や若者で賑わっている。メイン・ストリートであるカーナービー・ストリートや周辺の小さな通り、Kingly court（キングリー・コート）、Newburgh Quarter（ニューバーグ・クォーター）など一帯には、ファッションや靴などのショップなどのほか、カフェやバー、パブ、レストランが並ぶ。

50周年を記念し、2010年は1年を通して、ファッションやデザイン、音楽に関連したイベントやフェスティバルが行われる予定。写真は、2月から開催されている展覧会で、カーナビー・ストリートの16世紀から現在までの歴史、特に60年代を中心に解説している。空き店舗を利用したと思われるこの展覧会は、ちょっと薄暗〜い感じで展示品のサイズも小さく、スペースを有効利用できてない感じ。写真もファッションも、もっとたくさん展示してほしかった。でも奥の左にあるブースでやっている、カーナビー・ストリートの歴史のビデオはなかなか面白い。

Year 2010 is Carnaby Street‘s 50th Anniversary. By the 1960s, Carnaby Street became an iconic fashion destination for he Mod and hippie styles. Many independent fashion boutiques and designers were located as well as various underground music bars in the surrounding streets. With bands such as The Beatles, The Who, and Rolling Stones appeared in the area to work with the legendary Marquee Club located round the corner in Wardour Street, and shopped and socialized, it became one of Swinging London‘s coolest destination.

Today Carnaby Street is still one of the main shopping street in London and attracts many young people and tourists. The area including main Carnaby Street and surrounding streets as well as Kingly court and the Newburgh Quarter, offers fashion stores and boutiques as well as cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants.

Throughout 2010, Carnaby streets will host various events and festivals featuring fashion, design and music. Kicking off in February with an exhibition which includes a detailed history of the area, from the 16th Century to the present day, especially focusing on the sixties. This exhibition, using an empty store space, is a bit dark and the materials exhibited are rather too small. There is a big unused space in the middle and I wish they can show us more its iconic fashions and photos. However, I quite enjoyed the video being played on the back, showing the history of the street, especially during the hype in 60’s.

Red ‘Church’ Sculpture @ Bishops Square / Old Spitalfields Market

Old Spitalfields Marketの南西の角、Bishops Squareに置かれている、イタリア人アーティスト・Eleonora Aguiariのアート作品。近くにある、Christ Church Spitalfields（クライスト・チャーチ・スピタルフィールズ教会。写真の右奥に少し見える）のシルエットを模している。ビビッドな赤い色が、ビルやレンガ造りの建物の間で際立ち、シンプルだけれどインパクトがある作品だ。Old Spitalfields Marketにはちょくちょく行っていたのに、なぜか今まで全く眼中に入らなかったが、今日ふと気づいた。広場の真ん中にある、こんな目立つ作品にどうして気づかなかったのか不思議だ。

リバプール・ストリート駅近くに位置する、スピタルフィールズ・マーケット（Old Spitalfields Market）は、City of London Corporation（シティ・オブ・ロンドンの行政機関）の所有する、歴史あるマーケット。1638年にチャールズ1世が肉類の販売を認可して以来（当時は「Spittle Fields」と呼ばれていた）、ずっとマーケットがあった場所に立地する。1682年にはチャールズ2世によって、以前は野原であったところに、急速に増加する人口に食べ物を目的に公共の市場「Spitalfield’s Market」が設置された。現存する建物は、1887年に卸売り市場として建設された当時のもの。1991年に、卸売りの野菜・果物市場はNew Spitalfields Marketに移転。現在は改築され、広々としたオープンスペースには、インテリア、ファッション、アート、アンティーク、ジュエリー、フード等の個性的なマーケットストール（Market Stall）が並ぶほか、カフェやレストラン、ブティック、ショップ等がテナントとして入っており、流行に敏感な若者やシティで働く人たちでいつも賑わっている。スピタルフィールズ・マーケットは毎日オープンしているが、マーケットストールは日によって変わり、第1・3水曜日は食品、レコード、本、木曜日はアンティーク、金曜日はファションとアート（詳細はウェブサイトで確認を）。でも、食事やお茶したり、デリのストールで買い物する以外、私たちが買いたい！と思うものはあんまり売っていない。ちょっと私たちには「個性的」すぎるかも。そうかと思うと、レストランやカフェは「個性」のかけらもないチェーン店も多い。要は何でもありのマーケットなのだ。

The bright red sculpture in the Bishops Square at the south-west corner of Old Spitalfields Market, is the work of Italian artist Eleonora Aguiari. This is a silhouette of the nearby Christ Church Spitalfields (you can see a glimpse of it on the right hand in the photo). The sculpture is simple but distinctive, and its strong red color stands out among monotonous office buildings and dark red brick properties around. I have visited Old Spitalfields Market every now and then, but it had never caught my eyes until today, for some reason. It is strange – the sculpture is in the middle of the square and it is in eye-catching red…

Old Spitalfields Market or simply ‘Spitalfields’ in East London, few minutes walk from Liverpool Street Station, is a historic market owned by the City of London Corporation. There has been a market on the site since 1638 when Charles I of England gave a licence for flesh, fowl and roots to be sold in what was then known as ’Spittle Fields’. This was on the site of a public market ‘Spitalfield’s Market’, founded in 1682 by Charles II to feed the grwoing population of this suburb of London, that had previously been open fields. The existing buildings were built in 1887 to service a wholesale market, but the original wholesale fruit and vegetable market moved to New Spitalfields Market in 1991. Spitalfields was renovated since then, and now houses shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants and its open space hosts a variety of market stalls such as interior, fashion, art, antique, jewelry, books, records and food. Spitalfields attracts hip youngsters as well as business crowds who work in the city. It opens everyday, but market stools changes according to the day – Deli, records & books on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month, Antiques on Thursday, and Fashion & Art on Friday etc (check their website for the details). But we just go to the cafes and restaurants and never buy anything from these stools, except deli or food – may be their products are too ‘unique’ for us. On the contrary many cafes and restaurants at Spitalfields are chain without any personality. In a word, everything goes there to accommodate everyone.
