Brasserie Zédel @ Sherwood Street, Piccadilly Circus

ピカデリーサーカス近くにあるBrasserie Zédelは、ホテル地下の舞踏室だった場所を改装してできたブラッセリー。この広々とした豪華絢爛なアールデコ調のレストランにいると、ウッディ・アレンの映画「ミッドナイト・イン・パリ」のように、1920年代のパリにタイムスリップした気分になる。ブラッセリー以外に、巨大なスペースには、キャバレーやジャズ演奏が楽しめるthe Crazy Coqsと、禁酒法時代のアメリカを彷彿させるクラシックなアメリカンバー・Américainが地下に、そして地上階にはカフェ・ZL café（写真下）がある。

2012年半ば頃にオープンしたZédelは、以前書いたヨーロッパ風レストラン・The Delaunayの姉妹店で、伝統的フランス料理をお手頃価格で提供、2コースのセットメニューが何と£8.75、3コースでも£11.25！2種類のチョイスの中からメインとデザートが選べる、ハウスワイン1杯と水、コーヒー付き3コースセットで£19.75。アラカルトのメインディッシュ（肉・魚）でも大体£15以下。食べ物は素晴らしく美味しい訳じゃないけれど、値段から想像する味より上出来だ。しかもこのようなゴージャスな雰囲気の中で、安くフレンチを味わえるレストランは、ロンドン中どこを探してもないのではないかと思う。

古き良き時代のパリをロンドンで経験できるなんて、中々面白いこと。だからかZédelはいつも混んでいるようで、好きな日や時間にオンライン予約するのはかなり難しい。もし日が限られているなら、早めに予約するのが無難。

Brasserie Zédel is a grand French brasserie, housed in the former hotel basement ballroom in Piccadilly Circus. Surrounded with this vast restaurant with magnificent Art Deco interior, you feel like you travel through time to 1920’s Paris, like Woody Allen’s movie “Midnight in Paris“. In addition to the brasserie, there are also a cabaret & jazz venue, the Crazy Coqs, and a classic American bar Américain on the basement and ZL café on street level in this vast premise. 

Opened sometime in mid-2012 and a sister venue of another retro Grand European restaurant The Delaunay, Zédel serves great-value traditional French food. Their set menus are incredibly inexpensive (see full menu) – 2 courses ‘prix fixe’ menu is only £8.75 or 3 courses for £11.25, and £19.75 for ‘formule’ menu for more choice. Most of the “à la carte” main dishes for both fish and meat are under £15. The food may not be outstanding, but it is better than you may expect from its rather moderate price. I can’t imagine of any other restaurants in London with such a great value for money in this gorgeous setting. 

An fascinating experience of good old Paris in London. No wonder why Zédel is so popular – it seems to be very busy and is not easy to book a table online at the time & day of your choice. If you want to secure a table, make a reservation in advance!

Coco Momo Café Bar & Brasserie Holborn @ Theobalds Road

ロンドン西部のグロースター・ロードとメリルボーン・ハイストリートに2軒あるカフェ/バー/ブラッセリー・Coco Momoが今月、ホルボーンのTheobalds Road（セオバルズ・ロード）にもオープンした。広々とした店内は、パリのカフェにありそうなテーブルと椅子、壁には20年代風のランプ、そして白シャツに黒ベスト、ネクタイとギャルソンのようないでたちのウェイターたちと、クラシックなフランス風。ありきたりなインテリアの入口側より、白タイルとレンガの壁、天井に吊り下げられたシャンデリアと大きな時計、そしてびっしりと本が並んだ棚が置かれた奥の方が雰囲気がある。

朝8時のオープンから夜11時までいつでも食事できるので、時間を気にせず行けるのが嬉しい。フード類は、朝食はクロワッサンやトースト、卵料理、パンケーキなど。ランチはハンバーガーやサンドイッチなどカジュアルなものから、前菜、スープ、メインと、ちゃんとした食事も出来る。ディナーは、メインでも大体£15以下、まさしく、気軽に食べられるビストロかブラッスリーのようだ。5時まではランチセット（2コース£6）、5時から8時までのプリフィクス（2コース£12）と、懐に優しいメニューもある。

この日は、炭火焼チキンとアボカドのサンドイッチ（£7.50）と炭火焼チーズバーガー（£9.95）を注文。サンドイッチは、チキンが少しドライだったけれど、トーストされたパンは美味しいし材料も新鮮。ハンバーガーも、ジューシーに焼きあがったパテととろりと溶けたチーズが上手く絡み合い、なかなかいける。他の2店のウェブサイトでの評判は平均点が多いけど、1回しか行ったことがないし、是非お薦め！と言うほどではないけど、気軽に食事する場所として、悪くないと思う。

Café bar & brasserie Coco Momo opened its third branch on Theobalds Road in Holborn in this month, in addition to Gloucester Road and Marylebone High Street in the west. Classic café tables and chairs, 20’s style wall lumps and staffs in ‘garçons’ style with white shirt, vest and tie, make the café look like a French bistrot somewhere in Paris. The seating area on the street side is ordinary and a bit boring, but the back area is chic, with a chandelier, big hanging clock and large shelves filled with books, as well as white tiles and exposed brick walls.

Coco momo opens from 8am to 11pm, and it is great that food is available all day. Croissants, toasts, eggs, pancakes are available for breakfast till 11:30am. Lunch menu includes casual dishes like sandwiches and hamburgers, as well as proper meals with appetizers, salads, soups and mains. Most of the main dishes costs no more than £15 during dinner time, and it is quite reasonable and truly like a French bistrot or brasserie. The restaurant even offers bargain 2-course set menus for £6 (lunch) / £12 (prix fixe from 5 – 8pm).

Today we ordered Chargrilled chicken & avocado with rocket pesto (£7.50) and Classic chargrilled burger with cheddar cheese (£9.95). Although the chicken was a bit dry but the toasted bread was tasty and the ingredients were fresh. Nicely grilled burger had a perfect harmony with beautifully melted cheese. Reviews of other two branches on the internet is just average, but I thought the Holborn branch was not bad at all for a everyday use, though it doesn’t have michelin-star quality.
