Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life @ Tate Britain

ここ数ヶ月の間に見た展覧会の中で一番印象に残っている、テートブリテンの「Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life」展のこと、ブログに書こう書こうと思っていて、ふと気付いたらもう10月。今月20日に終わる前にと慌てて筆を取った、もといキーボードに向かった。

イギリス人アーティスト・Laurence Stephen Lowry（ローレンス・スティーブン・ローリー）、略してLS Lowryは、イングランド北部ランカシャー州にある産業の街・Stretford生まれのイギリス人アーティストで、20世紀半ばのイングランド北部の産業地帯を好んで描いたことで知られる。海外ではあまり名は知られていないが、イギリスでは最も人気のある画家の一人だ。19世紀後半のフランスの絵画に影響を受けたローリーは、サッカーの試合やデモ行進、工場へ通勤する人々等、炭坑や工場、テラスハウスと呼ばれる集合住宅を背景に、「matchstick men（マッチ棒のように細長い人間）」と呼ばれる独特の作風で、産業革命で栄えた北部イングランドの労働者階級の人々の日常生活を生き生きと描いた。

ローリーは夜間クラスでパートタイムで絵画を学び、仕事後に作品を描いていた。60代で画家として成功を収めた後も、定年退職するまで事務員としてフルタイムで働いたという。そして、その生涯でKnightの爵位を含む5つのイギリスの栄誉称号を辞退し、イギリスで最も栄誉称号を受け取らなかった人物という記録を持つそうだ。

ローリーの作品からは、今は廃れてしまったけれど、かつては活気に満ちていた産業地帯にコミュニティや人々のバイタリティーやパワーが溢れ出ていて、見ているこちらも何故か元気が出てくる。イチオシの展覧会、終わる前に是非足を運んでみてください。

Although Tate Britain’s “Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life” is one of my favorite exhibitions in recent years, I have been postponing to write about it with no reason, but suddenly I realized that the exhibition is going to end soon on 20th this month (can’t believe it’s already October!) and finally I picked up the pen, no, started to type the keyboard.

Laurence Stephen Lowry, or simply L.S. Lowry is an English artist, born in industrial city of Stretford, Lancashire, and is known for his paintings of the industrial landscapes of the north of England in the mid-20th century. He is not known well abroad, but is one of the most popular painters in UK. Influenced by French painting of the later 19th century, Lowry painted  everyday life of working class people with a style often referred to as “matchstick men”, with background of coalmines, factories and terraced houses, as well as people going football matches and protest marches – typical urban landscapes of North England where once had been flourished during industrial revolution.

Lowry studied painting part-time in evening classes, and later only painted at night after work. He worked full-time for his whole life as a clerk and continued to be chief cashier at the Pall Mall Property Company in Manchester, even after he achieved success as a painter in his 60s.
Interestingly, Lowry rejected five honours during his life, including a knighthood, and holds the record for the most rejected British honours.

From Lowry’s painting, I can feel vitality and power of the people and the community, where now lost past glory after many factories and mines closed down, sadly. Highly recommended, and you shouldn’t miss it.

“Art Everywhere” Public Art Event

Art Everywhereは、一般投票で選ばれたイギリスのアート作品57点のポスター22,000枚を、イギリス全土の屋外広告やバス停などに「展示」する、公共アートイベント。期間は8月12日から25日までと、残念ながら終わってしまったのだが、まだ取り外されていないポスターもあるかもしれない。イギリスの成人90％がポスターを見ると試算。資金£30,000はテートやThe Art Fund、人々からの寄付でまかなわれ、ポスターをはる場所は広告業界から提供された（詳細）。ウィリアム・ホガース、ジョン・エヴァレット・ミレー、ジョゼフ・マロード・ウィリアム・ターナー、ジェームズ・マクニール・ホイッスラー、フランシス・ベーコン、デイヴィッド・ホックニー、ピーター・ドイグ、ギャリー・ヒューム、ダミアン・ハースト、マーティン・クリードなど、古典からコンテンポラリーまで、イギリスが誇るアーティストの作品が街を彩った。

ポスターは文字通りeverywhere、そこかしこにあり、多くの人が見たとは思うが、どれぐらいの人がこのイベントのことを知っていたか疑問。私はBBCニュースでちらっと見たけれど告知も少なく、周りでこれらのポスターのことを話題にした人はいなかったし、ポスターにもイベントの詳細は書かれていない。コンセプトは面白いが、イベントが周知されていなければ人々も気にとめないだろうし、せっかく作った大量のポスターが勿体ない、とちょっと思う。

Art Everywhere is public art event, showcasing 57 British artworks selected through a public vote on 22,000 billboards, bus stops and other sites across the UK. Unfortunately it had been running from August 12–25 and now it’s over, but you may be able to spot some of them still not removed. It was estimated that 90% of the UK’s adult population would see the posters. Cost of the event £30,000 was funded by Tate, The Art Fund and a public funding campaign, and advertising industry had donated poster sites (more details). The list of artists are varied from young to old and from classic to contemporary, including William Hogarth, John Everett Millais, J. M. W. Turner, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Francis Bacon, Peter Blake, David Hockney, Peter Doig, Michael Craig-Martin, Gary Hume, Damien Hirst, and Martin Creed (full list).

The posters were everywhere, literally. I am sure many people had seen some of those posters as well, but the I am not sure how many of them had known about the event and why the posters were there. I haven’t met anyone talking about it and there was no details about the event written on a poster, as you can see. The concept is interesting, but it is a bit of a waste if people don’t notice it.

White Horse by Mark Wallinger @ The Mall

イギリス人アーティスト・Mark Wallinger（マーク・ ウォリンジャー）の作品「The White Horse」は、今年3月5日より、トラファルガー広場近くのthe Mallにあるブリティッシュ・カウンシル本部の前に展示されている。このサラブレッド（英語の綴りがthoroughbredなのを今日初めて知った）競走馬の等身大彫刻作品は、本物の馬を最新機器でスキャンし、大理石と合成樹脂で作ったという。British Council Collectionの委託作品で、2年間ここに置かれるそうだ。

馬とイギリスの歴史における馬の象徴的位置づけに魅了されたウォリンジャーは、2008年に、馬の25倍のサイズで高さ50mという巨大な白馬の彫刻作品案で、The Ebbsfleet Landmark Projectのコンペを勝ち抜いた。The MallのThe White Horseは、この彫刻の等身大版。→詳細はブリティッシュ・カウンシルのウェブサイト（英語）

近くで見ると、この「白馬」、超リアル。でも、いたずらや破壊行為を防ぐためかフェンスに囲まれてて、なんか窮屈そうで可哀想。

‘The White Horse’ by British artist Mark Wallinger appeared on March 5 outside the British Council’s London headquarters on the Mall near Trafalgar Square. This is a life-size sculpture of a thoroughbred racehorse. Wallinger scanned a live horse and made this with marble and resin. Commissioned by the British Council Collection, this horse will stand on The Mall for two years. 

Wallinger is fascinated by the horse and its emblematic status in British history. He won The Ebbsfleet Landmark Project in 2008 with his proposal of a white horse, 25 times life-size, and standing some 50m tall. The White Horse on the Mall is a life-sized version of this sculpture. →more details on the British Council website.

In fact the horse is ultra-realistic. The sad thing is that the horse was surrounded by the protective fence, and looked like he was in a cage and not free…

Loaf @ Tottenham Court Road

トッテナムコートロードにあるカフェ・Loaf。あの辺りで昼食を取らないといけなかったので2回行った。レトロなインテリアはなかなか素敵なのだけれど、ジェイミー・オリバーのレストラン（Jamie’s ItalianやUnion Jacks等）みたいで、ちょっと個性に欠ける。

メニューは、Grilled Cheese toasties（具とチーズ入りホットサンド）、wrap（巻いたサンドイッチ）、mac ‘n’ cheese（マカロニチーズ）hot box（コンボ）、サラダなど、アメリカン/ブリティッシュの軽食。シェフは前の晩よく寝てなかったのか疲れてたのか、頼んだTuna Melt（缶入りツナとチーズ入りサンドイッチ）はツナが、そしてChicken Pestoはペストソースが入っていないという失態。幸い店内で食べていたので、すぐに作り直してもらうことが出来たが。ようやく出来上がったサンドイッチは不味くはないけど、近くのチェーン店・Eat.と変わらないレベル。シーザーサラダはドレッシングが多過ぎて後味悪すぎ。そして「自慢」のコーヒーも、Allpressのコーヒー豆、最高級のLa Marzoccoエスプレッソマシンを使っていて、どうしてこの味？と首を傾げてしまう。一つ救いは、フレンドリーなスタッフのサービス。間違いに迅速に対応、お詫びとしてコーヒー、ケーキを無料にしてくれた。でも全体的には、全てが中途半端。リピはしないかな。

We tried Loaf twice, as we had to eat lunch around there. This small café with the retro-style décor is good looking, but also looks a bit chain-ish like Jame Oliver’s restaurants, such as Jamie’s Italian and Union Jacks.

They serve American/British favorites; “Grilled Cheese” toasties as well as salads, hot box (combo meal), their version of “mac ‘n’ cheese” and wraps (menu). But chef didn’t sleep well or for other reason, and we got Tuna Melt sandwich without tuna and Chicken Pesto without basil pesto. Thank god we were eating-in and not in hurry, so we could tell them right away and ask them to redo. Result? Those toasties were OK, but not better than nearby Eat. Their caesar salad had too much dressing and the taste was too strong. Their proud coffee from Allpress, made with La Marzocco was not impressive either – why can’t they make a good coffee with the combination of good coffee beans and best espresso machine? However, one thing good about them was a good & friendly service – the staff promptly responded to their mistake and offered a nice gesture. Overall score, average.

Union Jacks by Jamie Oliver @ Central St. Giles

イタリアンのチェーン・Jamie’s Italian、BBQ＆ステーキ店のBarbecoa、不運な生い立ちの若者たちをシェフとして訓練するレストラン＆慈善団体のFifteenなど、さまざまな形態のレストランを経営するセレブリティ・シェフ、ジェイミー・オリヴァー。慈善家気取りでテレビ等でヘルシーな食生活をお説教（自分は太めのくせに）、大英帝国勲章・MBE受賞した名声を活かして、レストラン帝国を着々と築き上げた。嬉しいことに、最近はテレビやメディアでもあまり見なくなったが、街を歩くと彼の店が嫌でも目につく。お目当てのレストランがクローズしていたので、以前ここのピザが美味しいと何かの記事で読んだと言うMの強い希望で、彼の店・Union Jacksで嫌々ながらランチした。

「British Classics（伝統的イギリス料理）」を謳う割に、ピザやホットドッグなど、他国の料理も売り物。イギリス産の厳選食材を使っているのでオッケーということらしい。薪を使った窯で焼き上げたアメリカ風ピザ生地は粉っぽくて、取り立てて美味しい訳じゃないけれど、トッピングのトマトソースとモッツァレラチーズは新鮮で熱々。ホットドッグも、オニオンやキャベツのフィリングが多すぎるのが難点だけれど、表面をパリッと焼いたパンに、美味しいソーセージが上手くマッチしている。食材にこだわるだけに、悔しいけれど味の方は悪くない。でもシェフよりビジネスマンと化したジェイミー・オリヴァーはどうしても好きになれないので、もう行かない。

Celebrity chef & restauranteur, Jamie Oliver. He owns different types of restaurants such as Jamie’s Italian (Italian), Barbecoa (BBQ & steak), Fifteen (charity restaurant0 etc. He preaches people on TV how unhealthy they eat, though he himself doesn’t look fit. Using his fame as a TV presenter and MBE holder, he has created his restaurant empire throughout UK and abroad. Yes, I don’t like Jamie as you can guess from my writing. I am happy that I don’t see him on media as much as before, but I see his restaurant here and there when I go out, no matter if I don’t want or not. Unfortunately the restaurant we wanted to go was closed that day, so I had no other choice but going to his British restaurant Union Jacks, as M insisted because he read an article that their pizza was good.

Union Jacks is “all about bringing back nostalgic British classics”, as their website says, though what they sell are not all British, such as their ‘incredible’ pizza and ‘great British’ hot dogs. But it is ok for them as they use ‘artisanal local’ ingredients. In fact, their wood-fired flatbread pizza, came with fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella was not bad, though I don’t like that kind of American style dough. Their hot dog was delicious with handmade free-range sausage served in between slightly toasted bread, although the fillings (onions and cabbages) were too much. I don’t want to admit, but their food was not bad. But I don’t come back to Jamie’s restaurants, simply because he irritates me for some reason.
