Wanted: Housekeeping Assistant for Buckingham Palace

10月21・22日付のTelegraph（テレグラフ）紙やSky Newsで、エリザベス女王や王室に仕えるハウスキーピング・アシスタント（所謂メイド）募集が、王室公式ウェブサイトに掲載されたとの報道があった。王室メンバーやゲスト用ベッドルーム52室、大広間19室、78ものバスルームを含む部屋数775室を誇り、年間5万人の貴賓やゲストが訪れる、世界で最も有名な王宮であるバッキンガム宮殿で働けるなんて、滅多にないチャンス。しかも王室のマナーやエチケットを学べ、履歴書の超目玉にもなる。申し込み締め切り日はあいにく10月26日だったらしいが、約1200人もの従業員を擁する王室のウェブサイトの求人情報には、随時求人が掲載されている。

私たち日本人＝外国人には縁のない仕事だと思うけれど、女王陛下に仕えるメイドとは、どんな待遇でどんな仕事内容なのか見てみるのも面白い。給料は、週40時間労働で年£14,200（約182万円）、週換算だと£273（約35000円）。食事と寝室は無料提供される。広告（下の画像）には多くの仕事内容がリストアップされているが、要はレベルの高い掃除、骨董品や調度品のお手入れ、そして来客のお世話等々。年間3ヶ月は、女王のお供で、バルモラル城、サンドリンガム・ハウス宮殿（Sandringham）、ウィンザー城など他の宮殿に滞在しなければならない。適性として、フレンドリーで礼儀正しく几帳面、高いタイムマネジメントスキルを持ち、仕事に優先順位をつける事ができ、信頼に足り、時間に正確、そしてハイスタンダードのサービスやケアを供する事ができなければならないという。メイドと言えどさすが王室、かなりハードルが高い。一体どんな人が合格したのか見てみたいものだ。

According to the news on Telegraph (Oct 21) and Sky News (Oct 22), the Queen put an advert on the official website of the British Monarchy, looking for housekeeping assistant who works for her. It is a great experience, working at the Buckingham Palace, the most popular royal residence in the world where more than 50,000 people visit each year, with 775 rooms including 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 19 state rooms and 78 bathrooms. You can learn royal etiquettes, and it will be a great addition to your CV or résumé, or at least, you have so many things to talk to your friends & family. Interested? Unfortunately, the application deadline was October 26 and it was too late. However, the monarchy employes around 1,200 people, and you can check the vacancies online for other jobs.

It is interesting to see what you would get and what you would do, if you could get the job. The wage is £273@week or £14,200@year for 40-hours@week labour, and food and accommodation is provided. There is a long lists of tasks on the advert (see the job description below), but in short, the post-holder is responsible for “high-quality cleaning, presentation and guest care,” and is required to travel to other Royal residences such as Balmoral, Sandringham, and Windsor, for three months of the year. She (or he?) must: be friendly, polite and meticulous; possess good time management skills; be able to prioritise tasks; be reliable; be punctual; and commit to maintaining and providing the highest standards of service and care. I would really want to see who got this job!

Short & Small Things in London

寒いせいもあるけれど、今日は一歩も外に出ていない。テレビをつけても、ジョン・レノンの暗殺から30年、明日の国会での決議を前に学生による学費値上げ反対24時間デモ（BBC記事/日本語関連記事1/2/保守党案の解説）など、あんまり興味をそそられるニュースもない。特に学生デモ！見ていると非常にイライラする。値上げの是非はさておき、偉そうな事を言っている割に、暴徒化してお店や物を壊したり、任務を遂行しているだけの可哀想な警察官相手に罵声を浴びせて得意顔。変な格好で街に繰り出し、ドラムを鳴らしたり踊ったりして、通行人の邪魔をする。メディアが来ると急ににこやかに写真目線でピースサインと、どうも緊張感と真剣さが足りない。外の集会の場では音楽流して踊ったりお喋りに興じ、立ち去った後はビールの空き缶や食べ物の残りなどゴミが散乱。これで、どうやって一般大衆の同情を得ようというのか。どう考えても騒ぎ目当てか面白半分か、値上げされたら欲しい洋服も買えないし、パブで飲んだり遊んだりできないから反対！ぐらいにしか見えない。世論を味方にするには、今のやり方ではあんまり効果ないような。

It is cold and gray today as usual and I’ve stayed in my room all day. What I have seen on TV is 30-year anniversary of John Lennon’s assassination or 24-hour student protest against tuition fee rise before the vote tomorrow (BBC article/Tory’s Tuition Fees Fact web), and nothing exciting. Especially all those student protests!! Put aside the debate of tuition fee rise, I don’t say all of them, but the ways some behave in their protest are quite irritating. Some students shout at policemen who just do their job (in fact it is not their fault at all) and vandalize shops and police cars, and they are so triumphant. I will be arrested if I do the same! Some come out in strange costumes or bang drums, and annoy pedestrians. On occasions of media photos and TV footage, they show big smiles with peace signs or waves hands – no seriousness whatsoever. At the meeting place, they just dance with music or chit-chat with their friends, and leave beer cans, food packages, cigarette butts and trash all over. How do they believe they can earn our sympathy by acting like ASBOs?! All what I feel is they just do this for fun, or because they can’t buy the latest stuffs at Topshop or can’t have fun at a pub or a night club. They should behave better if they want to win people’s heart!

すっかりタイトルから脱線してしまったけれど、今日見つけた何だかほっとするBBC記事「In pictures: London – short and small」。チューブ（ロンドン地下鉄）の最も短い区間、最も小さいアパートやパブ、教会など、ロンドンで見かける小さいものを集めている。小さいものは日本の専売特許だと思ってたけれど、ロンドンにも意外とあるものだ。一番最後の、日光・東武ワールドスクウェアのバッキンガム宮殿の写真、ロンドンじゃないけれどご愛嬌。

I completely derailed from today’s blog title. This BBC’s “In pictures: London – short and small” that makes me feel a bit better among all. It is a collection of photos of something short and small in the big city of London – shortest tube journey, smallest flat, pub and church etc, etc. I thought small and short is a copyright of Japan, but there are many in London as well. But at the end, here it is – the Buckingham Palace in Tobu World Square in Japan (not in London, though) !

Elephant Parade London 2010

May Day Bank Holiday（メーデー明けの月曜日。イギリスの祝日）の5月3日から始まった、Elephant Parade London 2010（エレファント・パレード・ロンドン2010）。アーティストやデザイナー、セレブたちによってペインティングを施された、実物大の赤ちゃん象260体がロンドンのあちこちに設置されている。

ロンドンの屋外でのアート・イベントとして過去最大となるエレファント・パレードは、絶滅の危機に瀕しているアジアゾウを救うためのチャリティ・イベント。ロンドンの前はオランダでも開催された。同様の慈善アート・イベントとしては、東京でも何度か行われた、2002年のCow Parade London（カウ・パレード）がある。

参加者は、デザイナーのTommy Hilfiger（トミー・ヒルフィガー）、Paul Smith（ポール・スミス）、Diane von Furstenberg（ダイアン・フォン・ファステンバーグ）、Julien MacDonald（ジュリアン・マクドナルド）、Matthew Williamson（マシュー・ウィリアムソン）、Lulu Guinness（ルル・ギネス）、アーティストのMarc Quinn（マーク・クイン）そしてSir Terence Conran（テレンス・コンラン）など。またイギリス王室の一員である、マイケル・オブ・ケント王子ご夫妻も参加されている。時には、歩き疲れた観光客や飲食の椅子代わりになったりしているけれど、これらのカラフルな子象たちは、愛嬌のある表情に可愛いポーズで、道行く人々の目を楽しませている。→もっと写真を見たい方はこちらをクリック。

6月22日までは、バッキンガム宮殿、国会議事堂前のパーラメント・スクエア、コヴェント・ガーデン、サウスバンク等、ロンドンの主な観光地の周辺に置かれるが、その後チェルシーにあるChelsea Royal Hospital（チェルシー王立病院：イギリス兵のための老人ホーム。RHSチェルシー・フラワー・ショーの会場にもなっている）に集められ、6月23日から7月2日まで一般公開。7月3日にはSotheby’s（サザビーズ）でオークションにかけられる。主催者は200万ポンドの売上を見込んでおり、その売上金は主催者のElephant Familyとアジアで活動する20のイギリスの保護団体に分配される予定。

ミニチュアの象は、デパートのSelfridgesや80 Regent St、36 Carnaby Street, and Greenwich Central Marketのお店の他、エレファント・パレードのオンラインショップで買える。

Elephant Parade London 2010 started on May 3, a May Day Bank Holiday, and 260 colorful life-size baby elephants, painted by artists, designers and celebrities, are located over central London during the event period.

Elephant Parade is a conservation campaign, similar to Cow Parade London in 2002, and aims at raising awareness of the urgent crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant. This is London’s biggest outdoor art event on record, and the elephants have ‘paraded’ in Netherlands before London.

The participating artists include designer Tommy Hilfiger, Sir Paul Smith, Diane von Furstenberg, Julien MacDonald, Matthew Williamson, Lulu Guinness, Sir Terence Conran, and artist Marc Quinn, as well as HRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Though sculptures are sometimes used as a resting point for exhausted tourists or a place to have a snack, but generally passersby appreciate these work of art, adore its cute face or gesture, or enjoy taking a picture. → For more picture, click here.

The elephants will stay at around major London landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Parliament Square, Covent Garden and the South Bank until June 22, and will be put all together in Chelsea Royal Hospital (retirement home and nursing home for British soldiers and the site of the annual Chelsea Flower Show) for public viewing from June 23 to July 2. On July 3, all of the elephants will be auctioned at Sotherby’s, aiming to raise £2 million to help the Elephant Family charity and 20 UK conservation charities working in Asia.

Mini elephants are available at Selfridges, 80 Regent St, 36 Carnaby St and Greenwich Central Market or at the elephant parade online shop.

The ICA Café and Bar @ The Mall

The ICA Café and Barは、その名の通り、ICA（Institute of Contemporary Arts）内にある、カラフルな内装のカフェ＆バー。DJブースもある中2階（写真上）と1階のスペースにわかれており、時にパーティや映画のスクリーニング、ライブ、クラブ・ナイト等のイベント類なども行われる。トラファルガー・スクエアやバッキンガム宮殿、St. James Parkに近いせいか、いつも結構混んでいる。以前は、ここに入るのに£2の入場料がチャージされていたのだが（ICAの映画のチケットを持っていれば無料）、それがなくなったことも、人気の理由か。私たちのような映画を観に来た人以外の客、特にグループで飲みにきている若い人たちが多いからか、はたまた音響のせいか、いつ行ってもかなりうるさいので、カフェでゆっくりしたいのであれば、お薦めしない。

このカフェ＆バーは、大英図書館やThe Wellcome Collection（医学をテーマとするユニークな博物館。でもけっこう洒落た展示デザインで面白い）、最近ユーロスターの発着駅としてリニューアルしたセント・パンクラス駅等に出店しているロンドンで人気のカフェ・ベーカリー、Peyton and Byrneのオーナーで、St. Jame’s ParkにあるInn the Parkやナショナル・ギャラリー内のThe National Dining Rooms and National Cafeといったレストランを展開する、アイルランド出身のOliver Peyton（オリバー・ペイトン）が手がけている。フード・メニューは、ハンバーガーやパスタ、サラダなど。カジュアルだけれど、ちょっと気の利いた品揃えだ。オリバー・ペイトン系だけあって、もちろんスィーツ類もある。ドリンク類は、コーヒー、紅茶、フレッシュジュースから、ワインやビール、リカー、スピリッツ等のアルコール類も充実。凝ったカクテルも楽しめる。でも凝りすぎてて、1杯のカクテル作るのに一体どれだけ時間かかるんだ？というくらい待たされたけど。ちなみに、当日のICAの映画の半券を持っていくと、バーガー類＋ワインかビール1杯がついて£8.95（ウェブサイトには£7.95とあるけれど、実際は£8.95だった）と、お得なセット価格でいただける。

The ICA Café and Bar is a colorful café & bar at ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts), as its name suggests. The space has a mezzanine with DJ booth at one corner and ground floor bar café area, and occasionally hosts private party and events, music performances, film screenings and club nights. The café & bar is always busy, as it is located on the Mall near the Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and St James’s Park.  The ICA used to charge £2 entry charge for the café & bar (free of charge for ICA ticket holders), but now it is free – probably that’s another reason for its popularity. The place can be quite noisy, as many people come just for a drink, other than gallery exhibitions and films, especially a group of 20s or 30s somethings, as well as the sound system in the building – therefore, I wouldn’t recommend this place for quiet and peace time with a cup of coffee or tea.

The ICA Café and Bar is produced as a collaboration with renowned Irish restaurateur Oliver Peyton; a founder of popular cafe/bakery Peyton and Byrne, tenanted at the British Library, St Pancras International station (reopened recently as a new Eurostar terminal) and the Wellcome Collection (an unique medicine-themed museum with modern exhibition design), and the owner of Inn the Park located in St. James’s and The National Dining Rooms and National Café, at the National Gallery. The food menu offers casual dishes such as  burgers, salads, pasta and soup, but a bit more sophisticated than an usual café & bar. As Oliver Peyton involves, some nice sweets are available as well. Their drink menu ranges from non-alcoholic drinks such as coffee, tea and fresh juices to a wide range of alcoholic drinks like wine, beer, liquor and spirits, as well as a variety of cocktails. The cocktails seems so complicated that the waiter took ages to make one glass and kept us waiting at the counter!  If you have a cinema ticket stub for the day, you can have any burger plus a  glass of wine or beer for a discounted price of £8.95 (their website says £7.95, but it was £8.95).

State Opening of Parliament 2009

イギリス議会の2009−10年度会期が始まった。初日である昨日11月18日には、「State Opening of Parliament（議会開会式）」と呼ばれる伝統に則った華麗なセレモニーが、議事堂であるウェストミンスター宮殿で行われた。

議会開会式は、通常11月が12月、または総選挙の年の新しい議会の初日に行われる。議会開会式ではまず、ヨーマン・オブ・ザ・ガードにより、現代版火薬陰謀事件を防ぐという名目で、ウェストミンスター宮殿の地下室をくまなく調べる。君主である女王が住居を出る前には、House of Commons（庶民院）の議員が、女王の安全を守るという名目のために、儀式上の人質としてバッキンガム宮殿に連れて行かれるが、女王が無事帰ってこられた折りには解放されることになっている。女王は、公式馬車で議会に到着。女王が儀式に出席しておられる間は、イギリスの国旗・ユニオンジャックに代わり、「Royal Standard」と呼ばれる王旗が掲げられる。そして、

ローブと王冠を身につけた女王が、エジンバラ公に付き添われ、House of Lords（貴族院）に入場されると、庶民院議員を召喚するために黒杖官（こくじょうかん、Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod）が議場に遣わされる。黒杖官が扉の前まで来ると、目の前でドアがばたんと閉められるが、これは庶民院の独立性の象徴だとのことだ。その後、黒杖官は持っている杖で3度ドアを叩いたあと、中に招き入れられる。

そして、守衛官（Serjeant-at-Arms）が英国下院議長の職杖（ceremonial mace）を手に、議長、黒杖官とともに、二人一組になった庶民院議員を率いて、貴族院に向かう。首相と野党党首が通常並んで歩き（今年はゴードン・ブラウンとデービッド・キャメロン）、その後２列になった議員たちが続く。庶民院議員はスピーチの間、女王の反対側に当たる横木の後ろに立って聞いている。女王は中立性を示す平坦な語りによって、「Speech from the Throne」または「Queen’s Speech（女王演説）」と呼ばれる、内閣によって用意された政府の来年度の施政方針を読みあげる。その後は、両議員とも議場に戻り、スピーチの議題を議論する、と言う段取りだ。

伝統を重んじるイギリスらしい、時代錯誤とも思える儀式だが、君主である女王、庶民院、貴族院による国の統治と、それぞれの独立性を国民に示すという意味で、重要なのだそうだ。恥ずかしながら、7年間イギリスに住んでいながら、この儀式をちゃんと見たことはおろか、その存在すらも意識していなかったのだが、少し前に議会見学ツアーに参加したので、今年の「State Opening of Parliament」は興味を持って見た。儀式の所作ひとつひとつに歴史的意味があり、その意味を知れば知る程面白いなあと思う。

ちなみに約75分のこの議会見学ツアー、見所満載の歴史あるウェストミンスター宮殿の中をゆっくり見て回ることができ、経験豊富なツアーガイドがユーモアたっぷりに歴史や蘊蓄を語ってくれる。出口には小さいお土産物のショップもあって、「Parliament」ロゴのお土産も買えるので、ご興味がある方はぜひ（Parliament Website）。しロンドンに来るのが無理なら、オンラインツアーもありますよ。Yesterday on November 18 was the day of the annual State Opening of Parliament to marks the commencement of a 2009-10 session of the Parliament. It is held in the House of Lords Chamber, usually in November or December, or in a General Election year when the new Parliament first assembles.

 

In this lavish ceremony, firstly the cellars of the Palace of Westminster are searched by the Yeomen of the Guard in order to prevent a modern-day Gunpowder Plot. Before the monarch departs her residence, the Crown takes a member of the House of Commons to Buckingham Palace as a ceremonial hostage, to guarantee the safety of the Queen. But don’t worry, the hostage is released upon the safe return of the Queen.

The Queen arrives at the Parliament in a horse-drawn coach. The Royal Standard is hoisted to replace the Union Jack on the Queen’s entrance and remains while she is in attendance. After she takes on the Robes of State and the Imperial State Crown, the Queen proceeds to the House of Lords, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Then Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod is called to summon the member of the Commons to hear her speach. When he approaches the doors to the chamber of the Commons, the doors are slammed in his face on his approach – symbolising the independence of the Commons. He strikes the door three times with his Black Rod, and is then admitted.

The Serjeant-at-Arms picks up the ceremonial mace and, with the Speaker and Black Rod, leads the Members of the House of Commons to walk in pairs towards the House of Lords. The Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition (Gordon Brown and David Cameron this year) usually walk side by side, followed by the two lines of MPs. Inside the chamber, the Commons stand behind the Bar of the House of Lords, and remain there during the speech.

The Queen reads a prepared speech written by the Cabinet, known as the Speech from the Throne or the Queen’s Speech, outlining the Government’s agenda for the coming year, in the presence of members of both Houses. The Queen reads the entire speech in the same tone, so as to indicate her neutrality. Following the State Opening, the Government’s programme presented in the Queen’s Speech is debated by both Houses.

This anachronistic State Opening of Parliament is not a mere historical ritual but also has symbolic significance to demonstrate the governance of UK; the Crown-in-Parliament (Her Majesty, together with the House of Commons and the House of Lords) and the separation of powers. Embarrassed say but I had never paid attention nor was I aware of the ceremony at all during my 7 years life in UK, but I happened to have a chance to join a tour of the Parliament the other day, and I enjoyed watching this year’s State Opening – each ceremonial process and action has its historical meaning and the more I know, the more intriguing.
