1ヶ月ほど前、今年2月27日に運行が始まった新しい二階建てバス「ニュー・バス・フォー・ロンドン」に、初めて乗る機会に恵まれた。この近未来的なバスは、ロンドン名物として人々に愛されたRoutemaster（ルートマスター）の新型バージョン。オリジナルのルートマスターは、当時のロンドン市長・ケン・リヴィングストンの方針により、2005年末にお役御免となったが、2008年に、新型のルートマスター導入を選挙公約の一つに掲げたボリス・ジョンソンが市長選に当選、約束通り新型ルートマスターの導入を実行した。

ロンドンを拠点とするデザイン事務所・Heatherwick Studio（ヘザーウィック・スタジオ）がデザインしたこの新型ルートマスターは、先代の特徴である開放式後部プラットフォームを備え、エンジンは電気・ディーゼルハイブリッドシステムを採用。旧型に比べ、環境に優しく、よりスムーズかつ静かに走行する。現在38番ルートのみ限定数運行中。BBCによると、このバスの開発に800万ポンド、そして購入予定の合計約600台のバスに約1億8000万ポンドの税金が使われる予定だそうだ。確かに他のバスに比べて少し広めで乗り心地はいいし静かだけれど、1台約3千万ポンドも払うに値するか疑問。それに、売りである後ろの出口から「hop-on / hop-off（自由乗降のような意）」する人たちを未だに見たことがなく、この出口が必要とも思えない。市長の古いルートマスターへの感傷が高くついた。このバスの導入によって、運賃が値上がりしないことを祈るのみだ。

Since the first service started on February 27 this year, I happened to get on the “New Bus for London” for the first time about a month ago. This futuristic bus is the new version of London’s beloved Routemaster. The original Routemaster was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 by former London Mayor Ken Livingstone. However, his archenemy Boris Johnson whose campaign pledges being to introduce a new Routemaster was subsequently elected Mayor in 2008, and he did what he promised to do.

Designed by London-based Heatherwick Studio, the new bus, currently operating on route 38 only, features the ‘hop-on hop-off’ rear open platform of the original Routemaster, but is operated by latest technology of hybrid electric engine which is quieter, smoother, and more environmental. The project cost almost £8million to develop (BBC news) and final cost to purchase about 600 buses will be around £180 million (approx. £300,000 per bus!), which are drawn from tax-payers’ money. Yes, the new bus is a bit more spacious and comfortable but less noisy, but I am not sure if it’s worth its price tag. Also I’ve never seen anyone hop-on or hop-out this new Routemaster, and I don’t know if the platform is really necessary…  Boris’ sentimentalism in the London’s old icon costs us a lot. Hope bus fare won’t hike because of those buses…

Another Day, Another Strike: London Buses

昨日の医者たちのストに続き、今日は約30年ぶりというロンドンのバスのスト。オリンピック期間中の労働に対する£500のボーナスを求めてバスの運転手たちが本日午前3時より24時間ストライキを行っており、ロンドンのバス運行の約3分の2に支障が出ている。どうして全てのバスが運行停止にならないのか不思議に思っていたら、ロンドンのバスはルートによって違うバス会社が操業しており、Unite（ユナイト：イギリスの労働組合）に加入している、17のバス会社の運転手はストに参加したが、他の3社は事前に裁判所のスト差し止め命令を得たため、ストを回避できたのだそうだ。ロンドン地下鉄、オーバーグラウンド、ドックランズ・ライト・レイルウェイ等、他の交通機関の労働者はオリンピック期間中£500〜のボーナスを受け取ることになっているのに、バス運転手が相応のボーナスをもらえないのは不公平だというのが、Uniteの言い分だ（BBC News）。

今回のストの善し悪しはノーコメントとして、ロンドンの人々はこの手の混乱には慣れたもので、徒歩や自転車で通勤・通学したり、遅れや遠回り、他の交通機関の混雑などの問題に直面しつつも、比較的冷静に対処している。実は、イギリス人はとても忍耐強い人たちなのだ。

Another strike after yesterday’s doctors’ industrial action. Today is London Buses’ first strike for 30 years. Thousands of bus drivers in London have been on strike  from 3:00 am today for 24 hours in a dispute over a £500 bonus for working during the Olympics, and around two third of bus routes have been disrupted. I wondered why some buses are working and others are not. I didn’t know that London’s buses are operated by different private sector bus companies (Wikipedia), and members of Unite at 17 bus firms went on strike but others working with other three companies are not joining after the firms won an injunction against the strike action. According to the Unite, other transport workers such as London Underground, London Overground and Docklands Light Railway, will receive over £500 bonus, and it is not fair for bus drivers who are not offered so far an appropriate share (BBC News).

Again, I will not make any comment on their action. But Londoners are used to this kind of disruption and seem to handle the situation quite calmly, though they have to face delays, detours, or alternative crowded transports, or walk or cycle to their destination. At the end, British are very patient people!

Marks & Spencer Scottish Shortbread Tin

最近、マークス＆スペンサーのストアブランドのパッケージデザインが可愛い（また追々紹介します）。ちょっとレトロなデザインのクリスマス用缶入りビスケット各種（参考：gumo gazette）もよくできていて、プレゼントやパーティの手みやげに最適。この、ロンドン名物2階建てバスをモチーフにした缶入りビスケットは、スコットランド発祥の伝統菓子・Shortbread（ショートブレッド）3種27個入りで、お値段は£8。イラストを描いたのは、イラストレーターのPhil Hankinson（フィル・ハンキンソン）氏。そのレトロでクラシックな画風は、チェコスロバキアの絵本作家・Miroslav Sasek（ミロスラフ・サセック）の名作「This is London」（1959年）を彷彿させる。中のビスケットを食べ終わっても、小物入れとして使えそう。ロンドンのお土産にもぴったり。

Recently package design of Marks & Spencer‘s store brands has improved (I will talk more later). Retro-feel Christmas biscuit tins is well-done (reference: gumo gazette), and is good for a present and gift. This tin box with London’s famous double-decker contains a selection of 27 shortbreads in 3 varieties, and costs £8. The package was designed by illustrator Phil Hankinson, and the his style resembles the old classic “This is London” (1959) by Czech illustrator and auther, Miroslav Sasek. You can re-use the tin box after finishing all biscuits, and this is a great souvenir of London as well.

Free Travel on New Year’ Eve, at Loan Company’s Expense

今日、バス停で見かけたポスター。大晦日の夜の11時45分から元旦の朝4時30分まで、ロンドン地下鉄、バス、トラムリンク、DLR（ドックランズ・ライト・レイルウェイ）が無料になるそうだ。これは、最高利子率2,600％もの高利でお金を貸すといわれるローン会社、Wonga.comがスポンサーになっている。「sometimes you need some extra cash（余分な現金が必要な時もある）」というキャッチフレーズのWonga.comの宣伝ポスターが、ロンドンの交通網に張り出され、高利貸しをスポンサーとして受け入れた市長が批判にさらされている（関連記事 1/2）。市長の広報担当者は、Wonga.comはロンドンの人々に有益な貢献をしていると弁解するけれど、市営交通だけに、もっとまともなスポンサーを探せばよかったのに。

Travel will be free on all journeys between 23:45 on New Year’s Eve and 04:30 on New Year’s Day, on London’s bus, Tube, Tramlink and DLR (Docklands Light Railway) services. This scheme is sponsored by Wonga.com, a high interest loan firm which offers cash at rates of up to massive 2,600%. Posters advertising Wonga.com, saying “sometimes you need some extra cash” have been put up on the London’s transport network, and the mayor’s decision to accept sponsorship from a “loan shark” firm is highly criticized (article 1/2). Mayor Boris Johnson’s spokesman said Wonga.com had made a “useful contribution” to Londoners, but why loan company?? There must be more suitable company for London’s public transport…

ローン会社だから、という訳ではないかもしれないけれど、電光掲示板を使ったスタイリッシュなポスターと違い、ケバケバしくてセンスがない。

Transpor for London Fares 2010 / Oyster on National Rail

今月1月2日付けで、ロンドン交通局（Transport for London／TfL）が運営する、公共交通機関の運賃が変更された（上の表参照：London Lite 10/15付記事より）。オイスターカードと呼ばれる、前払い式交通用ICカードを利用する場合、バスとトラムリンクは£1→£1.20（20％値上げ）、チューブ（地下鉄）はロンドンの中心をカバーするゾーン1区間内で£1.60→£1.80（12.5％値上げ）となった。この不況下、物価上昇率以上の値上げで、利用者のひんしゅくを買っている。でも良いニュースもある。一部の区間でしか使用できなかったオイスターカードが、ナショナル・レール（National Rail）のグレーター・ロンドンの大部分でも、使用できるようになったのだ（ヒースロー・エクスプレスは使用不可。詳細はこちら）。

ちなみに、2003年に導入されたオイスターカードは、ロンドン生活には必須。地下鉄､バス､ドックランズ･ライト･レイルウェイ（Docklands Light Railway: DLR）、London Overground、そしてグレーター・ロンドン内のナショナルレールで利用できる。カードの種類は、期間限定のロンドン・トラベルカードと、何度でもリチャージ可能なプリペイド方式のオイスターカード（上限£90/有効期限なし）の2種類。プリペイド式は、駅やバス内に設置された読み取り機にカードを当てると、機械が自動的に最も安い運賃を割り出し、入金（top-up）額から料金を差し引かれる仕組み。運賃面でも、通常の運賃（バスとトラムは£2、地下鉄ゾーン1内£4）より割安になる。発行の際は、返却可能な保証金（デポジット）£3が必要。オイスターカードは、地下鉄の駅や市内のあちこちにあるOyster Ticket Stops（店の外にブルーのロゴステッカーが貼ってある）、またオンライン等で購入・リチャージできる。旅行客用にはビジター用オイスターカードがあり（有効期限なし）、発行手数料£2を払っても十分元が取れる。旅行前にオンラインでも購入できるので、旅行前に買っておくとすぐに使えて便利。

Transport for London (TfL) fares have changed on January 2, 2010 (see the list above: London Lite Oct 15, 09). For an Oyster pay-as-you-go card (credit-card-sized reusable prepaid travel card for London transportation), bus & tram single ticket price went up £1→£1.20 (20% up), and £1.60→£1.80 (12.5％ up) for a single Tube ride within Zone 1, which covers central London. But the price hike above inflation rate has caused anger among passengers. But there is also a good news. Now the vast majority of National Rail services in Greater London accept Oyster pay as you go (except Heathrow Express. details can be found here); it was limited to ristricted number of services previously.

Oyster card, introduced in 2003, is a must-have item for a life in London. It can be used on bus, Tube, Tramlink, DLR (Docklands Light Railway), London Overground and National Rail services in Greater London. There are two kinds of Oyster cards: Pay as you go (no expiration) and Oyster travel cards (fixed period). Pay as you go can be topped up unlimited number of time, and can store up to £90 of credit. You must touch onto electronic reader when entering and leaving the transport system in order to validate it or deduct funds (for a bus, touch once only when entering), and it always charges you the lowest fare available for your journey. Oyster fares are always cheaper than cash fares (Bus&Tram single fare £2, Tube Zone 1 single ride £4!). When you first get your Oyster card, you will need to pay a refundable £3 deposit. You can purchase or top up your card at any Tube stations, Oyster Ticket Stops (there are many in the city – look for the blue logo sticker), and Oyster online. There is also a Visitor Oyster card for tourists as well, and it’s worth getting one, even though £2 fee is charged to issue the card. You can also purchase it online before your trip, so you can use it right away, without waiting on a long queue or looking for a ticket shop.
