Sausage & Mash at S&M cafe

イギリスの代表的な食べ物というと、フィッシュ＆チップスを思い浮かべる人も多いと思うけれど、ソーセージ＆マッシュ（マッシュポテト）もイギリス人の好物の一つ。カフェやダイナーでカジュアルにも食べれるし、ちゃんとしたレストランのメニューに登場することも。ロンドンに７件あるS&M cafe（ウェブサイトは現在構築中）は、昔風のキッチュなインテリアで若者に人気。エンジェルにあるお店がMの行きつけのお店で、よくランチに行く。この日のチョイスは、S&M London Traditional Sausages。ソーセージ２本がシンプルなトラディショナル・マッシュポテトと特製グレービー（肉を煮たり焼いたりする時に出る汁。煮つめてソースに使用）のセット。

Many people think about Fish & Chips as a typical British food, but Sausages & Mash (potatoes) is also one of the British’s favorite menus. You can eat it casually at a cafe/diner, or you can eat it at more upscale restaurant as well. S&M cafe is a popular place for young people, with its good old traditional sausanges & mash and funky 1950s style decor. Among 7 places in London, the one in Angel is our regular place for lunch. Today’s choice was “The Islington: Two s&m London Traditional Sausages”, served with traditional mash & house gravy.

First Restaurant in 2009

私の家から一番近いエリアは、歩いて２０分弱、ロンドン中心部の北東にあるイズリントン区エンジェル（Angel, Islington）になる。今日はお正月で、お店やレストラン・カフェはあまりオープンしていないのではないかと心配だったけれど、チェーン店をはじめ何軒かは開いていた。お店は通常より早めに閉まってしまったけれど。ちょっと小腹が空いたので、Stradaというイタリアンでお茶をした。Stradaはイギリスで全国展開するチェーン店で、モダンでスタイリッシュなインテリアで人気。私は温めたパネットーネ（Panettone Forno）を、Mはピザを注文。以前来た時は、ピザがもっとぱりっとして美味しかったのだけれど、ちょっと味が落ちたような。。。世界的な食糧価格高騰で、使用する小麦粉の質が落ちたのではと、疑っています。でも、ピカデリーサーカスにあるような、肉厚の安価なピザに比べると生地は薄いし、格段に美味しいけれど。

Our nearest High street area is Angel, Islington, located on the north east of central London – about 20 min. walk. We were worrying that many shops and restaurants might be closed for new year’s day, but some (mainly chains) were opened, for god’s sake! We went Strada Italian restaurant. Strada is a chain but it is popular with its modern and stylish decor. I had Panettone Forno and M ordered pizza. Pizza was not as crispy as last time – we suspect that they might have changed the quality of ingredients, due to soaring global food price. But Strada’s pizza was thin at least, and not as bad as lower end pizza takaways around Piccadilly Circus.
